Yes, let's take a little break. A lot going on anyway! I just sent you a link to a google sheets where I saved the game log. |

This was a very good game indeed. I think the Japanese taking New Guinea and the Mandates made it very difficult for the Allies to make their PoW quota. The WiE status delay of reinforcements was also a big impediment. Shows what a good design this game is, that each session can have a completely different, and unpredictable, narrative. Absolutely, I'd love to switch sides and start another. Want to take a week or two before we start? |

Steve, good game! Once I realized that you probably didn't have a PW card, I knew that the only way you could still win was to take either DEI, or Malaya, or Philippines. So I pulled everything I could back to dig in there. That felt a little gamey, as I wouldn't otherwise have pulled back as aggressively. But the fact is that you were on the back foot, I think mostly through poor card draws, my luck in taking out your carriers early, and because of a really tough battle result in the CBI. It could have gone very differently. What I found interesting about this game is that the Japanese only took DEI, Malaya, and the Philippines, and never the CBI nor pushed into India. But the JP did aggressively take New Guinea, which I felt really messed with the Allies. I hadn't experienced that before. Anyway, great game, thank you for playing. I am open for starting another one if you want, although perhaps after a little break to clear our heads. |

Wow. Bloody showdown. Couple of notes: The Allies defensive strength is halved because of the Amphibious Assault, meaning each step is only 6 hits. Second, I think Allies would lose one more PW (16.45) for a US ground unit of division or corps size being wiped out in a ground battle in which the US are the attacker. Not that it matters here. |

Yeah, this "Hail Mary" is almost certainly going to fail, but I found no other option, really. I don't have command range to go after Malaysia, and you have the Philippines too well protected. Yes indeed, well aware of the intrinsic 12-12. But let's see what happens! Regarding the VF2-11, please "undo" battle G. I'll leave the move of that unit to Eniwetok but forgo the Battle. |

Wow! Excellent. Very cool showdown. Quick point before I react: The VF-211 air unit cannot attack Truk, because it has moved from Wake (4 hexes) and an air unit with the range in parens (4) cannot use the extended range to attack after using it to move, see Glossary. Also, just want to make sure you are aware of the intrinsic 12-12 ground units in Japan home Island hexes, see 13.94. I'll wait with my reaction until after you've adjusted your move. |

See the new move, just a quick question: You have the 3NZ right there in AUS and it could reach Sarong, so you could have just replaced the marine unit with the 3NZ, move the CV into Sarong first, then AA the 3NZ. Only risk would be if I could react and get a naval unit into Sarong (JP would have to use a reaction card for that). Just making sure you are aware. |

Ah right, I see in 8.44 that a unit can start on a coastal hex. This is good to know ... for some reason I had thought that it must start in a port. |
552 | 11/1/2023 12:55:00 AM | Sep-Dec 1943 | Japanese | Message |
(I wrote the previous message several hours ago, don't know why it didn't post then, but now.) So, I've looked up the rules. The relevant rules are 8.44 and 8.45. Under 8.44, strategic ground transport (SGT) can start in any costal hex but must end in a friendly port, traveling the same distance that a naval unit would (so 15 hexes on a 3OC card). If also starting in a friendly port, the unit may travel double that. The unit must not enter an unneutralized ZOI, and can't end in a hex with an enemy unit. Does not cost an ASP. Amphibious Assault, under 8.45, can start in any coastal hex and end in any coastal hex, port or no, traveling the same distance a naval unit would (so 15 on a 3OC). AA can never double the movement allowance. Costs ASP. So if the AA restrictions (no unneut. ZOI, can't enter hex with opposing naval unit, may need to be escorted) aren't an issue, the only reason to use AA is to reach a hex that you cannot reach with strategic ground transport: enemy occupied coastal hexes and ports, (friendly or enemy) non-port coastal hexes, or enemy ports. This is what I remembered, but I didn't pay attention to the distances and just assumed I could double the normal naval movement - but that wouldn't apply to units starting in non-port hexes, as you point out. So I've double-checked my move. I played a 3OC card; basic naval move is 15. * 5018 (Tarawa): [27th Army] moves to 4110 (Marcus) Non-port to friendly port. Strategic Ground Transport (SGT). 12 hexes, so no problem. * 4719 (Nauru): SS Bde moves to 2915 (Davao) Non-port to friendly port, SGT, but 18 hexes, which is too far. So this has to be fixed. I will move to Biak instead. 14 hexes. * 4423 (Guadalcanal): [28th Army] moves to 2813 (Manila/Corregidor) Friendly port to friendly port SGT, 30 hexes range, no problem. I will correct this on my next move. But they are all SGT, not AA, and didn't cost ASPs. |
551 | 11/1/2023 12:09:00 AM | Sep-Dec 1943 | Japanese | Message |
I don't think so... As I recall, If a unit is moving to a friendly port, it's strategic ground movement, and doesn't require ASPs. If a ground unit moves to any other hex, it requires an ASP (and movement to friendly port during reaction would also require an ASP). I don't have the rules right now, but I think that's right. |
550 | 10/31/2023 5:06:00 PM | Sep-Dec 1943 | Allies | Message |
By the way, did the move of your units from the non-port islands of Tarawa and Nauru require use of ASPs? |
549 | 10/31/2023 5:03:00 PM | Sep-Dec 1943 | Allies | Message |
Yeah, I was considering that. I think your reading of 14.1 is correct ... the last turn is when WIE status advanced to +1, but in spite of ISR my only reinforcements were Navy/Marines this turn. I assume when using the Dispatch button in the Reinforcements box that all the Navy/Marines vs. Army vs. ISR and WIE are all factored into whatever it "dispatches." I had some USAF units arrive but they were already delayed. My reading of "If ISR delay is automatic" and the WIE status both hold true at the same time, the delay is not cumulative (i.e. no "double delay"), as the rules (as far as I can see) don't state such a thing. |
548 | 10/31/2023 4:53:00 PM | Sep-Dec 1943 | Japanese | Message |
Hi Steve, I just noticed another mistake, but it may not matter. I was reminded by this because you just got out from under ISR. Which means that you were in ISR during the reinforcements phase this turn. A rule I have a hard time remembering is that while you are under ISR, reinforcements are automatically delayed, meaning even if you War in Europe is +1 or higher. See 14.1.A. Here is why it may not matter, though: The rule says that US Marine/Navy units are NOT delayed as a result of ISR. I checked the reinforcements schedule and it looks like you only got US navy units this turns, which wouldn't be delayed. Did you consider this when you moved? If not, can you double check that I am reading this right? |
