6 covered hexes so bonus starts at +4 and can be reduced to +1.

2 rivers and a woods to do the reductions so -3 to take the bonus down to +1 as you calculated.

I will assume that this is not an error as 1.4 rules and 1.5 ones align.

What the rules are saying in terms of bonus is that Lee attacks Wagner and gets a +1 for 2VA exerting a ZOC on Union Mills.

My general thoughts: the original rules were clearer and I can't find any errata for them. I'm happy to play with them if you want.

The system has undergone a SL to ASL shift as refinements were added in and specific rules and modifiers added for different campaigns.
31 11/14/2023 9:47:00 PM Turn 2 Confederate Message I keep reading and rereading the rules. If the F Lee cavalry moves to 4323 to attack Waagner there are 6 of the 6 hexes covered for the basic flank attack bonus giving +4. However, 2 of the 6 are river hexes meeting final flank bonus 3d and one is a woods hex 4423 meeting 2b (having a woods hexside without a road) giving a total flank attack bonus reduction of -3 for a net flank attack of just +1. It doesn't make sense to me to reduce the flank attack modifier for a river that is unfordable and unbridged and especially for one such as 4421 that is in an enemy ZOC (2 VA cavalry's ZOC). Am I missing something on this? These 1.5 rules are a lot different from the flank attack rules in the original SJW rule book and I think they have left out exceptions to enemy ZOC.
