68 6/13/2024 12:25:00 AM Turn 3 German Message  I have the ability to take Leningrad on my turn regardless of die rolls and it is even cheap to do so. Requires I use 3 Air, and add by rail to my Northern forces. It can easily be blocked by changing your exploit move with 10 Armor. What I have done with other good players(and they have done with me) in RFT is allow the mistake to be corrected but depending upon how much gets changed the other player gets awarded bonus Repl Pts. Here it would be 2 Repl Pts(the minimum) that I would add to my Finn total. Do you want a chance to fix the mistake(from your play believe it to be an oversight not a fundamental error in your play) or should I continue from your last file?

The battle at V1 for instance, logically it makes sense that a unit could retreat to U2 since that takes him closer to the railway line to Kiev. Is the reason they make this strict rule to try to prevent players from “retreating forward”?

Anyway, for the blitz battle, I choose W5 for the retreat route.

There are two types of retreats. First in a legal direction. Legal directions have one requirement: that if you continue following that line on the hex grid you reach a hex that is a source of supply(rail connected(meaning I have no ZOC or unit on the rail blocking the route not just the rail exists)to your board edge, port connected by sea to another port that is a source of supply, or an off board hex in your color or between two exes of your color. The only thing that blocks this line is all water hexes. You may also retreat directly into hexes that meet one of these requirements: coastal hex in supply by coastal supply, friendly city(including minor cites), only friendly ground units. You may NEVER retreat into a Battle hex, hex containing an enemy city, or hex containing only enemy units regardless of if the direction is legal or it is a coastal hex.

Retreating tends to be a critical issue; I have often as the defender retreated from a Battle where I was being attacked at -5 as absent a mandatory retreat or required retreat(engaged unit dies) defender has the right to retreat first and by retreating I stop the attacker from retreating into a better hex.

There is only 1 Battle this turn where you will have more than one option to retreat; the Blitz Battle in W4. You may retreat to V4(directly into hex with only friendly unit), W5(W6 is in the direct hex line and is a source of supply), and V4(Odessa is in the direct he line and is a source of supply). I of course will pursue you at +7 in either W5 or V4.

Certain retreats you list are not possible as the direction never reaches a source of supply. Specifically you have no legal retreat in Battle 3, in Battle 7 I will occupy V4 with a Blitzing Panzer and U4 is not a legal direction.

You have seen how you need to provide a retreat option if a mandatory retreat is possible

What did you think of my proposed house rule?

Here are some questions that I have found lead to disagreements. I will accept whatever you prefer but want us both to know how we are playing.

1) Does a blitzing unit need 1 MP left to pursue into a clear hex or 2(ie if losing the Blitz marker anyway do you need to pay for the round of battle)?

2) Do Air units get the Air Base modifier if they did not start the NP Air Phase in the hex?

3) Do air Units get the Air Base modifier if opposing Minesweeps or Minelaying?

4) How do you work Battle rounds where there is land combat in a port hex(normally Leningrad) and the German wishes to Minesweep or Minelay. Three normal options
German can not, German can but Russian fleets can not oppose, German can and Russian fleet at Leningrad may oppose. Or something else; as I wrote I'll agree to your preferred option.
