94 6/25/2017 6:54:00 AM 1622-1623 Catholic Play Strategy card as Operations #10: 2 / New Leaders

93 6/6/2017 11:24:00 PM 1622-1623 Protestant Change Victory Points +1: from 18 to 19
92 6/6/2017 11:23:00 PM 1622-1623 Protestant Change Victory Points -2: from 20 to 18
91 6/6/2017 11:23:00 PM 1622-1623 Protestant Message A few additional acts of housekeeping are needed.

- The VP marker goes down from 20 to 18, because of the Protestant conversion of Lubeck and Bremen, but then +1 and back up to 19, for the violation of Brunswick's neutrality.

- I will remove the Bergen siege marker and place a few other Event markers on the Turn Record Track.

90 6/6/2017 11:21:00 PM 1622-1623 Protestant Play Strategy card as Operations #4: 2 / New Leader
Deploy Frederick of Baden and 2 Protestant Militia in Baden. Baden enters game as Protestant area.

Message from Protestant:
I'll play this for the Ops, and will use it to activate Christian of Brunswick with his army of 3 Mils, who will move as follows from Braunschweig (Brunswick):

MP 1: Luneberg.

MP 2: Bremen.

MP 3: Osnabruck, thereby violating the neutrality of Munster. +1 VP for the Catholics as a penalty.

MP 4: Lingen; place P1.

MP 5: Enter the UP, and go to the "Protestant Armies in the UP" box. Reduce one of the Mils by one step.

This breaks the siege of Bergen, so the siege marker is removed.

89 6/5/2017 5:52:00 AM 1622-1623 Catholic Message Electorate even !
88 6/5/2017 5:51:00 AM 1622-1623 Catholic Play Strategy card as Event #12: 1 / Frederick of Palatine Deposed as Elector

86 6/2/2017 12:02:00 AM 1622-1623 Protestant Play Strategy card as Operations #15: 3 / Urban VIII Becomes Pope
Playable only if Gregory XV is Pope. Death of Gregory XV. End Papal Aid to Catholic Player.

Message from Protestant:
I'll play this to activate Christian IV of Denmark (a/k/a "C IV"), who will move with his troops (4 f/s Mercs) as follows:

MP 1: Move into Kiel. The troops spend some time exploring the waterfront bars . . . and you know what else.

MP 2-3: Roust the troops from the bars (and other establishments), and move onto, occupy, and convert Lubeck to the Protestant cause. -1 VP. Further exploration of waterfront bars, etc.

MP 4: Move on with all 4 Mercs to Hamburg. The troops are very excited about this, but alas, the city fathers shut the gates. Leave 3 Mercs here to begin establishing siege lines.

MP 5-6: C IV moves on with 1 Merc to Bremen, which he occupies and convinces to join the Protestant cause. -1 VP. The Merc will end its movement here (since it has to). You can imagine what transpires in the waterfront bars, & c.

MP 7 (because he has 8 MPs): C IV moves back to Hamburg, surveys the siege works, and pronounces them good. A siege is established.
85 5/30/2017 11:38:00 PM 1622-1623 Protestant Message +3 for Catholic control of the Palatinate.

84 5/30/2017 11:38:00 PM 1622-1623 Protestant Change Victory Points +3: from 17 to 20
83 5/30/2017 11:37:00 PM 1622-1623 Protestant Message . . . Except that I now see you didn't change it, so it is fine as it stands.

But: for your move, you marched Cordoba and his troops initially to Landau, flipped control to Catholic, pillaged it (P1), and then marched back through Trier (possibly passing through the famous Roman gateway, the Porta Nigra) and then on to Mainz. This now gives you control of three cities in the Palatinate, which is enough to flip it to Catholic control. For which you get +3 VPs. So the VP marker will now move back up the track to 20, and you (or me) will also add a marker showing that control of an electorate has switched from Protestant to Catholic.

Note, however, that Heidelberg remains Protestant, despite the fact that the Palatinate has switched control to Protestant. See Rule 3.1, first bullet point.

I will take care of all of this house-keeping, hopefully tomorrow night if I'm able to execute my next move then.

82 5/30/2017 11:30:00 PM 1622-1623 Protestant Message Gary, the -2 reduction in the VP total from 19 to 17 in Post 79 didn't result from double-counting the effect of Christian of Brunwick's entrance. It was a function of Christian IV of Denmark's entry onto the board in Post 77, which (per Rule 17.D.3) automatically results in Schleswig-Holstein (2 VPs) flipping to Protestant. So the VP total gets adjusted back to 17.

81 5/30/2017 1:14:00 PM 1622-1623 Catholic Play Strategy card as Operations #1: 3 / Val Telline Passes Open

78 5/29/2017 11:27:00 PM 1622-1623 Protestant Message I just realized that I mistakenly entered Christian of Brunswick and his troops in the wrong Brunswick -- Kalenberg, not Luneburg. So I have corrected that in the move file I'm sending you.
77 5/29/2017 11:03:00 PM 1622-1623 Protestant Play Strategy card as Event #7: 3 / Denmark Enters War
Deploy Christian and 4 Danish Mercenaries in Denmark.

Message from Protestant:
I'll play this for the event. Encouraged by Mansfeld's capture of Wien and fearful for the fate of his co-religionists in the Netherlands, King Christian of Denmark also decides to enter the war. His troops are placed on the Danish flag markers, but Schleswig-Holstein automatically shifts into the Protestant column. -2 VPs.

Message from Protestant:
I'll play this for the Event. -2 VP.
72 5/23/2017 11:15:00 PM 1622-1623 Protestant Message One correction: the part of Post # 67 dealing with pillage should have read, "the only pillaged area I have that's in a Friendly or Neutral area is at Budweis, which is adjacent to one of your units at Linz, and thus can't be removed."

My apologies for the delay. I've been dealing with the end-of-turn mechanics in another online game, plus I had to bone up on the rules and then play through an all-day FtF gaming session on Sunday. I must get to bed now, but will try very hard to get my first impulse move out tomorrow night. I think all the administrative mechanics have been taken care of.

67 5/20/2017 1:00:00 AM 1622-1623 Protestant Message And on to Turn 2.

6B. The Pillage Recovery Phase.

There's no point in my doing a pillage recovery roll; the only pillaged area I have that's in a Friendly or Neutral area is at Linz, which is adjacent to one of your units, and thus can't be removed.

The only pillage recovery you can do is at Passau, I believe; you don't yet control the Palatinate, so you can't do a recovery roll for Oppenheim. A pillage roll is a minimum of 1, so I will remove the P1 marker in Oppenheim unless you object.

It's now late here, so I will draw the cards, then head to bed.

61 5/20/2017 12:36:00 AM 1620-1621 Protestant Message So, to the End of Turn mechanics.

E1. Pay Segment

(P) The Protestant army under Mansfeld at Wien is fully paid, as are the units with Thurn at Brunn. The Hungarian unit at Pressburg is locally paid. I can pay only one of the Mercs (or two of the Militia) with Schlick at Budweis, so they must roll on the Loot Table.

(C) The Imperial units at Graz are all locally paid; and your 12 FAPs are enough to pay your Bavarian Mercs at Linz and your Spanish Veterans at Trier and Mannheim.

Message from Protestant:
I'll play this card for the event. Encouraged by Mansfeld's early conquest of the imperial capital of Wien, Cardinal Richelieu agrees to begin paying a generous biannual French subsidy. Other Protestant powers kick in as well and the result is that the King of Bohemia's coffers swell with a massive transfer of foreign gold: FR7 + ENG3 + UP8 = 18 FAPs.

Protestant Siege Assault on Wien:

32 4/29/2017 1:10:00 AM 1620-1621 Protestant Play Strategy card as Operations #6: 3 / England Intervenes
Deploy English Veteran unit in any Protestant-controlled city in Lower Palatinate.

Message from Protestant:
I'll play this to activate Mansfeld, who will move as follows:

MP 1-2: He moves with Count Thurn and the 1 (Mil) survivors from the Battle of Eferding to Znaim. Here, they pillage extensively (place P1 marker), and dispatch the fruits of their efforts back to the troops in the siege lines around around Wien. Znaim converts to Protestant control.

MP 3-4: Mansfeld, Thurn\ and the 1 (Mil) move on to Brunn. They convert it to Protestant control, and then Mansfeld drops Thurn and the 1 (Mil) there.

MP 5: Mansfeld returns to Znaim.

MP 6: He returns to Wien.

MP 7: He rides over to Pressburg, confers with Bethlen Gabor, and then returns to the siege lines outside Vienna with the 3 Hungarian Mils, leaving BG to carry on with administrative functions for the time being in Hungary.

MP 8: Mansfeld returns to the siege lines outside Vienna with his 15,000 Hungarian reinforcements. He then rouses his strengthened combined army to launch an assault on Vienna's defenses.

31 4/29/2017 12:08:00 AM 1620-1621 Protestant Message The historical account of the battle of Linz/Eferding, in early April 1620:

“Mansfeld had anticipated that Maximilian of Bavaria would send his general Johann Tilly and his army of 20,000 mercenaries pounding down the Danube Valley as soon as they received word of his advance upon Wien, and he was not disappointed in these expectations. Mansfeld had left behind Count Heinrich Thurn, who had been a leader of the more extreme Protestant party in Bohemia prior to the Defenestration, with 10,000 militia at Linz to slow Tilly's advance.

“Thurn advanced his force some eighteen miles west of Linz to the small but ancient town of Eferding, which dated back to 1222 and claimed to be the third oldest settlement in Austria. His militia marched into the town past the massive late Gothic cathedral, built between 1451-1505, and Castle Starhemberg, which dated back to the 13th century.

“To the north of Eferding, the Danube River road ran through a plain that narrowed like a funnel towards the south. Thurn set up his 10,000 militia in a blocking position across the road at the narrow end of the funnel, resting his right flank on a series of ponds close by the river and his left flank at the base of a wooded ridge that ran roughly NNW-SSE, marking the western side of the plain.

“When Tilly’s column marched into sight with his 20,000 professional mercenaries, the outcome could not be long in doubt. Mansfeld’s hope had been that Thurn might manage to slow Tilly’s progress for a day or two, and his orders were simply that Thurn should hold for a reasonable period and then save what he could from the inevitable wreck.

“Perhaps to their own and their enemies’ surprise, Thurn’s troops stood up surprisingly well and withstood two smashing assaults over the course of the morning. By mid-day, however, the weight of numbers, experience, and their own losses told. The Protestant line buckled, then crumbled, and finally collapsed under the weight of the Bavarians’ third assault.

“Thurn managed to withdraw in good order with about a quarter of his troops, and headed down the Danube to rejoin Mansfeld at Wien. Of his remaining troops, about two-thirds were left on the field and most of the remainder scattered in flight, with many of them making for the bridge at Linz to return home to Bohemia.

“Tilly’s force suffered 2,000 losses of its own -- a full 10% of his force. The cathedral was turned into a hospital, and he and his officers toasted their success over dinner that night in the main banqueting room at the castle. The following morning, his somewhat bloodied army resumed its march towards Wien.”

30 4/27/2017 11:36:00 PM 1620-1621 Protestant Message For the clarity of the record, I should note that the comparative Loss Factors for the Battle of Linz were 6-3, in the Bavarians' favor.

You need to place a P1 for Tilly's march to Linz. Where did your men pillage the most heavily on their march?

29 4/26/2017 11:08:00 PM 1620-1621 Protestant Message One of Tilly's Mercenaries is reduced.

One of the Protestant Militia units is destroyed; the other is reduced. Thurn and the surviving (Mil) will fall back upon Mansfeld's army at Wien.

28 4/26/2017 11:03:00 PM 1620-1621 Protestant Message No Leader Losses, although Thurn probably had a close shave there.

22 4/26/2017 12:08:00 AM 1620-1621 Protestant Message I will send you a Move file that reflects these adjustments.

In historical terms, you might describe these events as follows (I hope you will find that these efforts at creative writing on my part will add some additional color and interest to our game):

"Mansfeld, facing two powerful Imperial and Bavarian armies mustering in their respective capitals, decided on a surprise early strike against the Austrians in Wien. He marched south from Pilsen, rendezvoused with Thurn's troops in Budweis, and then accompanied by Thurn and a further 10,000 Bohemian Militia, marched south to the Danube at Linz. He posted Thurn's troops here as a blocking force to cover his rear, then marched on Vienna, pillaging heavily as he approached the city in an effort to force the Austrians out of their fortifications and into battle.

"He encountered the Imperial army of some 20,000 Veterans under Bucquoy on the heights of Puckersdorf, southwest of the city. The resulting battle, which saw a total of 45,000 men engaged on the two sides, was long and sanguinary, ending only at sunset. The Austrians were eventually forced from the field, and Bucquoy chose to retreat south towards Graz to regroup, rather than being trapped in a defensive struggle inside the walls of Wien itself. Mansfeld then laid out his siege lines around the city, and dispatched messengers to Bethlen Gabor at Pressburg to apprise him of what had occurred."

21 4/25/2017 11:50:00 PM 1620-1621 Protestant Message Gary,

I've reduced three of my Mercs to understrength status -- often described in TYW game logs as (Mercs) to differentiate them from full-strength units; I suppose you could also use Mercs (-) -- to handle my battle losses. And the Austrian Imperial capital doesn't fall, at least not yet. I have to siege it first. So I flipped control back to Catholic, and have placed a siege marker.

11 4/24/2017 11:24:00 PM 1620-1621 Protestant Message Yes, I had already factored this into my calculations. Shame that VASSAL doesn't provide us with the extra unit for such a well-established aspect of the game. This is hardly even an Optional Rule anymore.
10 4/24/2017 12:54:00 PM 1620-1621 Catholic Message Using Opt rule there should be a 4th Imp unit at Wien.
Vassal does not allow this it seems so will place a Game Turn marker in lieu as reminder. Do you still want to attack or re-do final move of Mansfields army now he is facing more Imperial troops ??
9 4/23/2017 11:41:00 PM 1620-1621 Protestant Play Strategy card as Operations #5: 2 / Gregory XV Becomes Pope
Playable only if Paul V is Pope. Death of Paul V. No Papal Aid to Catholic player this turn. Papal Aid resumes next turn, until Urban VIII Becomes Pope event (P-15).

Message from Protestant:
I've reviewed the rules and I'm ready to get started (although I may still be clearing out cobwebs relating to "Wilderness War" and "Mr. Madison's War," the games I've played most recently, for a while).

I'll use this to activate Mansfeld in Pilsen. He will move with Anhalt and his 5 Mercs as follows:

MP 1: to Budweis, where he will pick up Thurn and 2 Mils. The other 2 Mils and Schlick will remain.

MP 2-3: Mansfeld, Anhalt, and Thurn advance to Linz with 5 Mercs and 2 Mils, and they convert it to Protestant control.

MP 4: Leaving Thurn and 2 Mils behind in Linz, Mansfeld, Anhalt and 5 Mercs advance to Vienna where our first battle (I suspect) will result. Place a P2 marker on Vienna.

I will not play any combat cards. You may play any combat cards and resolve.
8 4/23/2017 11:18:00 PM 1620-1621 Protestant Message Gary, I just noticed this evening that there is an additional page of Optional Rules. I'd like to use the following from page 37:

19.9 (Old French Corps Infantry Regiments)
19.10 (Richelieu becomes Chief Minister of France and sends massive aid to the Protestants)
19.11 (Wallenstein's enemies)

6 4/22/2017 2:34:00 PM 1620-1621 Protestant Message So no to the Laskas variant, but we should discuss other Optional Rules (those in section 19.0 at page 36 of the 7/03/09 edition of the Living Rules). I suggest the following:

19.1 (Victory Determination)
19.2a (Stronger Imperial Set-up)
19.2b (French additional leader Guebriant)
19.3 (LOC established during the Action Phase)
19.6 (Wallenstein's ambition)
19.7 (Tilly as Dynamic Leader)

2 4/20/2017 10:31:00 PM 1620-1621 Protestant Message Gary, I've set up the game. Let me know if you would rather play the Protestants. Also, let me know if you would have any interest in trying the Laskas Variant, or would prefer to stick with the original.

I've named the game for the great British historian of the Thirty Years War, whose book I read back in my college German history class. I thought I might sprinkle quotes and descriptions from Wedgwood into our Game Log periodically.
