480 1/8/2017 7:34:00 PM 1807-1808 Austria Message Very sorry about that - I wasn't even conscious of Talleyrand as causing a +1 drm to the Peace Roll.

By the by, I was surprised at how passive Turn 2 was. I had the upper hand and knew Europe Exhausted was out, so I had no incentive to spend CPs attacking; the status quo was fine for me. But I'd have thought France would be more aggressive, or indeed aggressive at all...was my defensive position that strong?
479 1/8/2017 1:39:00 PM 1807-1808 Britain Message So anyway, there's my logic. Not necessarily claiming my thinking was great, but at least you know I *was* thinking. :D

I probably should have at least said "Hey France, let's reconsider. If you burn a card, I will too, and I guarantee I will not play any events for A/R on turn 3".

But I believe the DRM was +2 before cards
-1 War Without End
+1 Tallyrand
+2 Europe Exhausted

And while it looks like the final roll was done with this in mind, it was posted as +1 and not +2. No idea if that would have affected my thinking or not, but it might have made me more likely to think "let me try to deal with France before I post my decision" if I knew I was potentially dealing with 50% and not 33%
478 1/8/2017 1:33:00 PM 1807-1808 Britain Message { Not sure how giving up a resource to get 2 cards instead of one is helpful to Britain or France when you had such a big lead but we each saw it differently }

I don't think the deal was "generous" to me considering I got nothing directly from it. Temporarily stopping France from preempting was nice, but much more beneficial for A/R than me. The reason I took the deal was that A/R seemed to really want stop the preempt ability and was willing to lose their resource for it. I figured by taking the deal, I was helping induce the leading team to shoot their wad too early (as well as lose a VP).

Also, I felt like I did semi-owe them a card draw on turn 2, since normally as Britain I'm pretty generous with funding my continental allies, but in this game I decided to play everything for myself on turn 1 even before A/R got the lead. The reason was I had Capitulation and I was thinking of going all-out to take Madrid and I would need every op I could get for that.

So with that in mind, on turn 2 I was already considering giving him a card anyway just to make up for not doing it turn 1, while saying "But if you're still ahead you aren't getting jack from me on turn 3". Many times I've seen France get stymied earlier, and then the Coalition goes everyone-for-himself too early, forgetting how potent France still is, and then France comes back and wins - which is why I was willing to help him on turn 2.

It's a tough balancing act because while all things being equal I'd rather hurt the leader, the leader isn't capable of sending troops into Spain or harassing my fleet and preventing the Admiralty event. With Denmark and Prussia involved, I didn't think France's position was all that weak going into turn 3 either.
477 1/6/2017 6:11:00 AM 1807-1808 France Message Not sure how giving up a resource to get 2 cards instead of one is helpful to Britain or France when you had such a big lead but we each saw it differently. Either way, it was an enjoyable game to play against both of you. Perhaps will get a chance to do it again another time
476 1/6/2017 4:32:00 AM 1807-1808 Austria Message Britain gave me Parliament in a deal which I thought was pretty generous to him, and in a way to France as well - he was helping the leader by also taking the leader down a notch. Sacrificing a Resource (i.e., a permanent VP) for a card wasn't something I offered lightly.
475 1/6/2017 3:16:00 AM 1807-1808 Britain Message I helped him exactly once during the game. :)
474 1/5/2017 7:59:00 PM 1807-1808 France Message I usually spend also but turn 1 I was in too much trouble and turn 2, I was tired of seeing the leader getting help from his ally. Giving him Parliament when he had such a lead told me I had to hope he missed the roll so I could have enough firepower to keep trying to bring A/R back to the pack
473 1/5/2017 7:38:00 PM 1807-1808 Britain Message I normally agree that burning cards is better. But when it's to stop my (nominal) ally and my enemy isn't burning either, I usually won't. Especially since I had the tiebreaker for 2nd and I've already got too many online games going at once....
472 1/5/2017 4:06:00 PM 1807-1808 Moderator Message Will post results on web site
471 1/5/2017 3:51:00 PM 1807-1808 France Message Congratulations Darrin
470 1/5/2017 1:53:00 PM 1807-1808 Austria Message Success this time - game over, just. My condolences to both of you...I have come around to believe that one should more or less always burn cards to extend the game, especially in a competitive setting like this, but I particularly can't blame Daniel for not burning cards after France didn't each of the past two turns. (I do think France's position was stronger at the end of T2 than it was at the end of T1; Prussia was likely to be a thorn in the side, particularly with that annoying Danish army on the loose, but alas, we'll never know...)

466 1/5/2017 11:48:00 AM 1807-1808 France Message France will not spend a card
465 1/5/2017 11:26:00 AM 1807-1808 Austria Message No losses there - Danish flag in Courland.

So, to the Peace Roll. Starting DRM is +1; VPs are as follows:

--Austria = 4 (up Zurich, Milan, Munich and Warsaw)
--Russia = 0
--Britain = 0 (up a Resource and Granada; down Naples and Lisbon)
--France = 0 (up Naples and 2 Pacts; down Zurich, Milan and Munich)

Russia won't burn a card, so France's decisions is next, followed by Britain and then Austria.

422 12/27/2016 1:00:00 PM 1807-1808 Austria Message (All of that last message concerns France's attack on Rome, by the way.)
421 12/27/2016 1:00:00 PM 1807-1808 Austria Message In message #92 in the game log, I proposed a protocol for dice errors which I'd thought we'd all agreed to:

"Generally speaking, I'd suggest that if someone rolls too many dice, you just discard the excess, and that if someone rolls too few dice, you simply roll more dice until you get the correct amount. So if I'm wrong in any way (or going forward in general), let's do that, OK?"

Point being, the first die Ken rolled on its own should have counted as one of the four attack dice, after which he should have rolled only five further dice. Isn't that right?

A leader of your choice is given two more Units of its nationality - even during battle. The added Units may exceed the Commander's Command Rating even if it is moved into the battle.
