349 2/14/2017 2:41:00 PM Fall 1915 Central Powers Message Anyway, I have had the game probably 2 years by now but I am officially "hooked," and see why it has such a reputation.

Thanks again for the class, my friend. Talk to you soon!
348 2/14/2017 2:40:00 PM Fall 1915 Central Powers Message I have generally built a reputation as a "rules lawyer," so to speak, with these things. Once I got those down, I can usually point to a section almost from memory.

Card counting - well, I DO play TS...a lot...soooo, yeah. :-)

Probably not totally fair to evaluate NE play as that part of the map doesn't explode until Allenby steps on the scene.
347 2/14/2017 2:35:00 PM Fall 1915 Allies Message Yes, Brussels and Sedan are the key spots in the west. With that in mind, expert level play will generally see T2CP1 being the playing of entrench in Sedan, if possible, followed by the eviction of the AP from Brussels.

FR Mutiny: I alway play this as the event ASAP. Some folks hold out but I like to nip FR offensive power early.

Things you did right:
* You know the rules, that's a big step.
* You're card counting, which is a higher level skill
* You ably defend in the East - that's usually where my AP focus is.
* NE play was effective and efficient.

* Match #2: Yes, we can touch base again after PrezCon

* Face to face POG: Yes, exhausting, especially when you play twice in a day! I used to get POG migraines but now know to play fast and stay hydrated.
346 2/14/2017 12:58:00 PM Fall 1915 Central Powers Message I agree that the general rule of thumb for CP is to dig in the West (while maintaining attrition to keep the AP at bay), and destroy the Russians and Serbs in the East. However, as you pointed out Brussels was indeed my Achilles heel. That and Sedan may be the most important spaces on the map, in my opinion. Once you dug in at Brussels I knew I was in for a headache.

I think FR Mutiny is situational. I had the opportunity to make you pay in Nancy without much hope of a counter. But dice didn't work out (needed more 7s), and it would have been better if I had a better line, as I mentioned.

I AM happy that I played a lot better - would like to hear your observations on what I did right. Curiously, the Near East, which is usually a hot stock of points for the AP, saw no real action.

Let's wait until you get back from Prezcon for the next one. You would still have a month and a half or so before Round 3 of your tourney, and we would have no delays. So, please do drop me a line when you get back. And, thank you for this opportunity to learn from a master. :-)

PS - face to face POG is exhausting. I don't know how you guys do that at the START of WBC and keep going for the week. My FTF buddy is Bill Pettus, a high level player himself. I played my one FTF game with him, got to like Turn 10, and left his house feeling like I'd been out all night...

345 2/14/2017 12:50:00 PM Fall 1915 Allies Message With regards to this match, I'd say your situation is fatally compromised. I will be doing stuff to prevent your play of an RP this turn and I have another RP play for AP6 to really ruin your day on turn 8.

Some quick observations:
* On a FR mutiny turn, like this one, you do NOT want to be attacking the FR as that's just wasting troops. The value of FR Mutiny is that it gives your Germans facing FR units a respite from battle.
* There was a 33% chance I'd take Trent in the situation we had - getting that AH11A into Trent was a must play. Each cc I played raised the odds even further.
* You needed to be digging in like a madman in the West. Defend the Rhine is not a long-term viable strategy in the Tourney scenario but it could have bought you some time. You basically would try to dig to T2 in Essen, Frankfurt, and Strasbourg/Mannheim.

I'd be happy to play again but my pace will slow down - work and then I'm heading down to Charlottesville this weekend for PrezCon next week. (Nothing like some face-to-face POG!)
344 2/14/2017 12:48:00 PM Fall 1915 Central Powers Message Regardless of word getting around (and I concur) - people often forget that these are GAMES. Too many wargamers out there who take these TOO seriously. Fortunately, the greater majority are like you and I.

343 2/14/2017 12:43:00 PM Fall 1915 Allies Message Agreed. I probably try to lead by example by giving warnings on just about everything and accommodate most error adjustments.

In my situation, I deal with many of these folks in person at conventions, in other games besides POG, so I'd never want to be a jerk. It's a small community and word gets around...
342 2/14/2017 12:39:00 PM Fall 1915 Central Powers Message So before we go any further, I should ask if you think this situation is ultimately retrievable outside of luck.

If you say yes (without advice of course), we go on. If not, I would like another. :-)
341 2/14/2017 12:38:00 PM Fall 1915 Central Powers Message All good re: supply warning details. Personally, I would give my opponent a heads up. We play to win - but I like both sides to have fun, and I am pretty easy going...if it were the final, I probably would tighten up, though.

340 2/14/2017 12:38:00 PM Fall 1915 Allies Message BE1 and BR2A advance into Liege.
339 2/14/2017 12:37:00 PM Fall 1915 Central Powers Message 7/4

BEF has to take the first hit, so flip BEF and eliminate (BRc)

Flip GE2A, GE3A and GEc - retreat to Essen via Aachen

Advance?
338 2/14/2017 12:36:00 PM Fall 1915 Allies Message I agree that a capital threat "should" be considered as a supply warning but the simple truth is that it isn't at this time. Same thing goes for "MO warnings".

See Play Guidelines, #2.
http://www.bitterwoods.net/paths-of-glory-tournament-faq/

This is actually an evolved documenting of the definition of supply warnings, they used to be MUCH more restrictive...

336 2/14/2017 12:31:00 PM Fall 1915 Central Powers Message I am waiting to see "Over There" as AP6!!
335 2/14/2017 12:30:00 PM Fall 1915 Central Powers Message Actually...

I have been meaning to tell you that I went through Michael Dauer's Round 1 game in full. During which, he stated that what you mentioned should be considered a supply warning. So, I am not so sure.

In any case, this isn't a tournament game - but perhaps you want to discuss with him for your tournament rules?

That said - THREE 5 ops???
334 2/14/2017 12:27:00 PM Fall 1915 Allies Play Strategy card as Operations #16: 5 / Romania
May not be played after "Fall of the Tsar". Romania joins the Allies. See also 9.5.2.5 for restrictions on play as a non-event when CP are at TW.

Message from Allies:
T7AP4
And yet another 5-OPs.
Brussels/Sedan: All, excl FR10A, attack Liege. 16A+1 (prior cc still active) vs 12A

CT: FR6A to Nancy

Also: To give you a heads-up - I have Russians in range of Berlin. The risk is that if I control Berlin at the time RPs are taken, you can't spend any accumulated German RPs. This is not a supply warning so you can't normally expect people to warn you about this, particularly in tournament play.
333 2/14/2017 12:18:00 PM Fall 1915 Central Powers Message Flip GE1A in Strasburg
332 2/14/2017 12:11:00 PM Fall 1915 Allies Message 5/4 AP win. FR9(A) becomes FRc (1,2), lose FR(c).

328 2/14/2017 12:02:00 PM Fall 1915 Central Powers Play Strategy card as Operations #45: 4 / Treaty of Brest Litovsk
May only be played after "Bolshevik Revolution". RU units may no longer attack. CP units may not attack RU units except TU units may attack on the Near East map. Both sides may still move into unoccupied spaces and may still suffer attrition, besiege forts, and resolve sieges. Also see 5.5.2.

327 2/14/2017 11:56:00 AM Fall 1915 Allies Message 4 LF: BR1A becomes BR(c). RB(AUS,CND,BEF,2,0)

No advance. Supply threat to Liege.
326 2/14/2017 10:38:00 AM Fall 1915 Central Powers Message Meanwhile you have losses and advance decision.
325 2/14/2017 10:38:00 AM Fall 1915 Central Powers Message There aren't enough trenches in France to hold all those dead Germans...

7/4

Flip GE7A, GE5A, and eliminate (GEc)

(GE7A) retreats to Mannheim, (GE5A) to Essen

This could be decisive, and shockingly similar to the breakthrough in my Round 2 game. I think I played much better in this one, but Brussels has been my bane (as you predicted).
