It's fantastic that you whiffed so much at Caen, because it allowed us to explore this glorious end game. The game was liable to be over by the 9th if you get a hurt on Caen on the 7th or even the 8th, but it didn't happen. It made for a great experience.

Mistake on 6G1. If Merville is damaged but not cleared, and Sword is cleared, then the Germans have to send inf from Houlgate to Merville. Depending on the turn outcome, the Pzgr in Troarn might have to reinforce or counterattack Merville, or it just stays in place to defend Troarn. Instead of the move from Troarn, the armor from St. Pierre and the infantry from Zone A will have to run to Bourguebus.

The 12ss/26, the big guy, should go to Zone A. There is a credible counterattack from Zone B led by the 12th armor, and the Zone A move for the 26th threatens a 7-strength attack into Merville, which is credible in a weather change.

In general, in a magic bridge game, the Germans will move from Coutances to the center, and this opening makes it even more important to do it immediately, I agree. It can be risked in clear weather, I agree, because in a weather change, the Germans can run all the way from Cherbourg to the center, if desired. What I haven't figured out is this: if Sword and Merville fall, do you abandon magic bridge tries to get units to the center or counterattack Merville? On the one hand, possibly you *need* the magic bridge to have a chance. I don't know if I have this figured out. But I think I am settling in that I'll take 3 moves on the Peninsula: MB from Valognes, MB from Montebourg, then move through flak from Cap to Valognes. The Cherbourg move waits until a weather change.

I haven't done this in my magic bridge play, and somehow I need to figure out how to do it. By the end of the 9th, I need to have Carentan impregnable. I'm not sure what I'll do, but I have always been willing to develop that later, and it has become the most successful way the Allies attack my magic bridge position: they cross the face of the Germans at Omaha and they work into Carentan before I can get the late game reinforcements up.

In another situation, if the paras have cleared Merville and Sword has been cleared, this is different. But on *this* board, my move there should have been the Houlgate infantry to Merville. Your armor could still roll up and clear Merville, but it might not and probably won't. Also, subtly, if the 6th lasts long enough, the Germans can come back to this move after seeing what happens at Merville.

after dday i saw the possibility of the setting up brit twin towers. i just needed the gold inf to win combat on 6a0, then a couple mop up assaults with tanks. the whole game trajectory was determined on 6a0!!

the twin towers has been one of the "dream" gambits. I consider it one of the most devastating outcomes to the 6th - much more important than mb, omaha OR, or clearing brett. maybe equivalent to clearing villars on 6th. basically it means the brits "win the race" to caen backdoor and get there before the ss defenders are properly deployed. there's not much the germans can do about it. probably the move to make is running coutances troops caumont - to push more troops toward caen. note i didn't see that move at the time, only afterwards when i tried to figure out how the f you stop the gambit.

a critical component of the gambit is getting the blue arty to merv on 6th - so it can regroup to trev on 7th. the gambit's primary purpose is to prevent the ss from reinforcing caen.

7th. i didn't have a specific plan with the merv stack - too many things depended on your moves - so draft best available player. a post dusk roll double pulse was high on my list - at least for the brief time i held the adv. I thought i HAD to clear trev - and that whacking borg or potig was just gravy. very tasty gravy. also high on my priority was not taking heavy damage. my purpose was to block ss troops - so taking trev is enough bc it pins germans troops to def borg/potig.

the outcome was fascinating...by clearing trev and contesting borg the brits got 2 days work done. but lost their arty so little hope of progress on 8th. houlgate arty nut kicked monty and he had to wait a day for testicular swelling to subside.

8th. my strategy was based upon caen being in the bag. two fresh in caen, and few troops nearby, and lots of allied arty adjacent. bomb it up on 8th and clear wreakage on 9th. caen will be easy schmeezy. or not!

isig was my key target on 8th - and not taking too much damage in doing so. mostly to stretch the german line and make sure i could get to 9.6 after i took caen. i dunno, maybe i can make a play at cara, but doubtful.

9th. ok time to finish off caen. whoops, not so fast. somehow those forlorn yellows held out, on a dream and a prayer. in one day the caen defense went from skeletal to stacked like a trophy wife. damn you.

but the omaha front yielded unexpected fruit. caratan is in play.

10th. caratan baby! i thought i would take cara. until you recklessly ran reinforcements to cara. you brilliant bastard. i had it all planned out, i'm supposed to get contested BEFORE you have the chance to run troops.

11th. got lucky triple triple. then got unfocused. i couldn't decide between, mere, cara w/assaults, or cara just bomb. especially in late game, the allies need a plan, and laser focus in pursuing that plan. no fiddling around.

i think nuking jean was questionable. dunno.

the sequence - sunshine roll then max air bomb was brutal. technically it didn't decide game, but cara was 90-95% to fall if zone c assault fails.

That turn could have ended before I moved from St. Lo, but if you flip the arty, I probably hit Foret from Zone D on my next impulse. before starting on cara I should have bombed mere with Utah red arty. test it out and see if I get big uproll then maybe go for mere instead of cara. upside with no opportunity cost.

if i'm going move peach troops to foret...then I should have used blue arty to bomb lo lemondrop BEFORE cara bomb. germans probably won't counterattack foret right away, then next pulse land peaches and move to foret. coin flip to cost the cara defense a precious unit.

I need brit arty in catz. i should have moved a brit arty to isig INSTEAD of the nuke.

i went to bed with 20+ supply.

total combat dice have been 635-638 (allied-german) in 88 combats. avg roll was 7.22-7.25. that is amazingly equal - even a deck would typically have less variance.
