502 3/19/2017 12:39:00 PM Master ID = 21696 Game Deleted
501 3/19/2017 12:37:00 PM Turn 12 Russian Message I will close out this game and set up the new one perhaps today even though not ready to play.
500 3/19/2017 12:35:00 PM Turn 12 Russian Message It would have been interesting to see if the VWs could have taken an objective. Yes, the hidden ATG is the key to the scenario but I did still have a good series of rolls. If I'd shanked just one of them you would not have lost two of the three StuGs, only one.

Anyway, as noted a day or two to recover then on to Scenario 8 with me as the Russkies, charging that 88 with my T-34s! The reverse of Scenario 9 in terms of who is defending.
499 3/19/2017 12:31:00 PM Turn 12 Russian Message As the DJ would say, "It's number 8 with a bullet!"

My cards were not devastatingly powerful until I drew the flip command marker one. I also have a fighter bomber barrage which I was going to try to spot near the fight in the trenches since my trenches would give me 6 cover while your troops would have 4 cover from the buildings. I also have light mortars, the commissar card (not useable in '43), demolitions which are not useful to me as I'm the one with fortifications, and finally card #45 PTRD Anti-Tank Rifle. The elephant gun would have been useful against your Volkswagens! I had one infantry platoon in each of the other two objectives just so you couldn't "walk" in.
498 3/19/2017 12:30:00 PM Turn 12 German Message You certainly showed how powerful that invisible gun could be.
I think the Germans have to just accept that they will most likely lose one of the Stug platoons.
497 3/19/2017 12:24:00 PM Turn 12 German Message Well played, adversary!
I think losing my HQ sealed my fate.
We can halt for however long we want, and then fight anew. I suggest #8 and you as the Russians. We can return to this dismal street fighting, anytime.

496 3/19/2017 12:10:00 PM Turn 12 Russian Message Yes, I have one. Just got it in my last card draw. I don't mind calling the game if you are ready to do so. I think I got lucky when my invisible ATG was very effective, not one bad roll in the sequence. If we do I'd like to take a day or two off.
495 3/19/2017 12:04:00 PM Turn 12 German Message Greetings, O Father of the Motherland
I hope you and all your Steppe-children are well and happy, today.

If you hold a Flip Command Marker card (amongst that horde of cards in your hand) -- I am willing to start talking surrender terms.

494 3/18/2017 5:37:00 PM Turn 12 Russian Message It hasn't happened too much or too obviously for us but sometimes you just have to do something and jump up the matrix a bit. I think Advancing is an example for the Russians. The Advance order for them is a 7 (I think 5 for Germans) and thus above the Sniper action and not available there. An Advance order for infantry (and Assault for tanks) is sometimes necessary right now. Note that the Russian infantry is inferior to the German infantry in range, firepower and defense and this is quite decisive over time. BUT, in melee the Russians are the equal of the Germans. The Russians want to get into a bear hug with the Germans and Advancing is the only way to do it. Also, getting into melee with the Germans keeps them from firing out of the hex. In our current scenario when I surprised you by deploying and advancing my concept was to keep your StuGs from firing at my garrisons in the objective hexes.
493 3/18/2017 5:30:00 PM Turn 12 Russian Message Climbing the Matrix ladder is a fairly common mode since it's a way to preserve initiative. I think it's built into the design and intentional. But there will be times when this won't happen. Recall that in this scenario several times I've picked high number cubes to get the Asset Cards. I think deviation from the ascending order happens also when both sides are in a bad Command Marker situation so IPs are sure to flow back and forth. I think the Matrix works quite well at both regularizing the game and then making it into battlefield style chaos.
492 3/18/2017 5:26:00 PM Turn 12 Russian Message Yes, some purple prose (in all caps since I can't change the font here) in 34.21 first paragraph:

...When a melee is announced BY THE ACTIVE PLAYER, the opposing player selects any one of his units in that hex to be the target of the attack. WHEN A MELEE IS ANNOUNCED BY THE INACTIVE PLAYER (VIA RETURN FIRE OF OP FIRE), ONLY THE LAST ACTING UNIT WILL BE THE TARGET OF THE ATTACK...
491 3/18/2017 5:25:00 PM Turn 12 German Message You're right -- I see the purple note about that.
490 3/18/2017 5:23:00 PM Turn 12 German Message I do like using dice for rolling, instead of the 'card' dice of Combat Commander.
I wonder about the Order ladder, though. Our turns always seem to run --->> using up the small cubes, then the big ones.
Is this planned intentionally into the game?
Or, maybe this will change when we play a large scenario with lots of turns.
489 3/18/2017 5:22:00 PM Turn 12 Russian Message Ah, perhaps the first instance of a major difference between 1.0 and 1.1 version of the rules. In 1.1 there is a purple font sentence (indicating a change) that the just melee fired Active unit must be the target of RetF. At least I think that is so. I'll get my rulebook now and make sure.
488 3/18/2017 5:15:00 PM Turn 12 German Message Rule 34 is a bit inconsistent, imho.
34.3 says that Return Fire is against a hex, then 34.31 says that RF is against the firing unit in that hex (and anybody else).
34.32 says to follow all proper procedures for Direct or Melee Fire.

If the Return Fire is Melee Fire, shouldn't it follow the Melee procedure?
That is, the defender chooses the target.
487 3/18/2017 5:11:00 PM Turn 12 Russian Message I know you are enjoying our FF:GD scenarios but I was wondering how you feel about the game overall. I think it's one of the best tactical level games ever. I like it as well as Combat Commander, maybe even better. There is always something to think about and plan even when you don't get to shoot things up!
486 3/18/2017 5:08:00 PM Turn 12 Russian Message Woohoo, a couple of 1s! Again, I enjoyed it greatly. Even though I didn't do much firing there is a lot of thinking and planning even for me (until I mess up which cubes are left on the matrix!). See you on the battlefield perhaps tomorrow?

482 3/18/2017 5:02:00 PM Turn 12 Russian Message Yes, could really use some 1's with all these cards in hand!

Both my CMs got to Available box.

I think the game is very close, slightly in my favor right now unless, as you say, it goes into overtime. But as always I'm having a good time!
481 3/18/2017 5:01:00 PM Turn 12 German Message Reinforcements
1 VW in P12, Q12, R12.
480 3/18/2017 5:01:00 PM Turn 12 Russian Message I'm a bit confused on your question but in melee, the Active player (which is a better term than Attacker for the rules) nominates an active unit to melee fire. The non-active player nominates a defender. The dice are rolled. Then the non-active player may RetF but only against the Active unit that just fired. In non-melee combat RetF goes against the hex so the RetF player/unit is not picking a target.
479 3/18/2017 4:59:00 PM Turn 12 German Message No target for my Sniper.
Pending Command marker to Available.
Tactical Command marker to Pending.
478 3/18/2017 4:58:00 PM Turn 12 German Message I bet you're hoping for a couple of 1's in the Order Ladder.
I know that I would be.

477 3/18/2017 4:56:00 PM Turn 11 German Message The attacker can pick the target if the Return Fire is Direct Fire -- but with Return Fire/Melee Fire, the defender picks the target?

476 3/18/2017 4:56:00 PM Turn 11 Russian End Turn
475 3/18/2017 4:56:00 PM Turn 11 Russian Message I won't shoot. If the ATG that is Unc Kill was able to fire I might take a shot at your StuG.

Snap Shot
473 3/18/2017 4:53:00 PM Turn 11 Russian Message Would you like to seed the matrix or wait on that?

Also, in that RetF you don't get to pick the target. In melee the RetF is always directed at the Active unit that just fired.
472 3/18/2017 4:53:00 PM Turn 11 German Message I'm feeling pessimistic (who, me?) - I don't think I can win this unless the game goes into overtime.
However, I'm game to keep trying and see what happens.
471 3/18/2017 4:52:00 PM Turn 11 German Message End of Turn.

I think I've had enough for one day and wish to adjourn until tomorrow.
I had great fun on Friday, all by myself -- even though no playing was going on, I thought about this plan and thought about that plan…basically spend most of the day exercising my brain, running through different plans, through odds, ends, and everything in-between.
470 3/18/2017 4:48:00 PM Turn 11 Russian Message Still no RetF. End of turn?
469 3/18/2017 4:48:00 PM Turn 11 Russian Message Correct, no RetF.

Problem solved.
446 3/18/2017 4:10:00 PM Turn 11 Russian Message I have a 9 left so you would take it and there would be 0 IP for both of us.
445 3/18/2017 4:10:00 PM Turn 11 Russian Message Egads, I really messed up. I have a 9 cube left on the matrix. I seem to miss taking cubes off quite frequently so think you should be able to specify what we do...I'm really confused as to what was what.
444 3/18/2017 4:03:00 PM Turn 11 German Message The last 2 cubes were the 2x 9, and you took them both.

As I see --
1. The turn ends with me having 7 IPs.
2. You redo your last 2 Orders -- perhaps making me take the last cube this turn and letting you start next turn with a big bunch of IPs.
3. Tell me what cube you have left, and I'll take that one.
4. Anything else we dream up.
443 3/18/2017 3:56:00 PM Turn 11 Russian Message I mean 9 for you, 0 for me. Over to you for last order.

German: from 7 to 9
441 3/18/2017 3:55:00 PM Turn 11 Russian Message Okay, same order, same Advance, adjust IP to 0 for both of us. Is my bookkeeping correct?
440 3/18/2017 3:53:00 PM Turn 11 German Message Based upon the journal, the last 2 cubes were 9's (after I took the 2nd of the 7 cubes).

439 3/18/2017 3:47:00 PM Turn 11 Russian Message What did we have left for cubes before my last order? I showed a 7 and a 9. I am certain you are correct so I'll correct my play once I know where I messed up.
438 3/18/2017 3:45:00 PM Turn 11 German Message We might have a small problem, if my hopefully exhaustive research is correct. I am open to any suggestions.
