571 4/26/2017 2:16:00 PM Fall 1863 Confederate Message I would prefer no break at all...I'm addicted!

But if you want one, I will wait. You are the only one with whom I have a game of FTP right now.
570 4/26/2017 2:15:00 PM Fall 1863 Confederate Message Definitely they evened out in the mid-game. but i wasn't mad as it was just the dice gods returning us to a balanced state. and if i hadn't had such great luck in the beginning who knows where i would have been at mid game anyways. I think that loss in the only large battle of the game where I had a small edge in odds was the decisive turning point. but looking back, you would likely have won anyways by squeezing me in AR, TX and FL...that gave you 3 states and you were on your way to rolling through LA too. That is 4 CSA plus you either would get KY back if i defended TN with Lee or you would get TN and you had MO. That is 6 and then you had a massive SW advantage giving you an equivalent of at least 3 states more for victory purposes.

Other big turning point was my offensive with A of Tenn being cut off by you in Louisville. I could no longer finish converting IN and then I had to spend multiple cards to attempt to breakout.

Well played by you.
569 4/26/2017 2:12:00 PM Fall 1863 Union Message Sounds good! I'll setup the game. We can keep a few days break if you wish before kicking off the second game.
568 4/26/2017 2:10:00 PM Fall 1863 Confederate Message No worries LOL...i do the same when dice seem to find every possible way to screw me over.

I was feeling bad for you actually and it felt cheap winning some of those early battles.
-------
I would like to take the CSA one more time to try to build off what I learned. Then after you beat me again, I will take a stab at the USA.

That ok with you?
567 4/26/2017 2:08:00 PM Fall 1863 Union Message Looking back now, the dice evened out towards the end. Evened out a bit too much possibly. I had many crazy rolls for extremely important fights for you.
566 4/26/2017 2:04:00 PM Fall 1863 Union Message Unconditional surrender accepted.

Well played, thanks for numerous thrilling moments! Sorry for me whining like a little girl at the start. Probably felt same like Lincoln did, CSA seems unstoppable, Union generals are better killing their own men than enemy, every attempt falls apart. Got to say, I was sweating every moment and just hoping you couldn't launch an invasion.
565 4/26/2017 2:01:00 PM Fall 1863 Confederate Message Can I concede? My CSA states sent a telegraph to Davis: We are tired of being beaten like rented mules! *stop* Please end the war now! *stop*
564 4/26/2017 1:47:00 PM Fall 1863 Union Message Well, had to fight a small battle so couldn't win your defenders. You win star-results as Richmond is a resource space and even though you are wiped out, I must retreat because of fort. After all SW-changes, CSA hanging at 9 before Blockade Runners.

560 4/26/2017 1:19:00 PM Fall 1863 Confederate Message No retreat, no interception attempt. At lunch so please roll it, I haven't checked numbers but I think auto win for you as i can only inflict 2 casualties
559 4/26/2017 1:06:00 PM Fall 1863 Union Message Yes, I try to capture Richmond.

You may roll retreats/interceptions and resolve please.
558 4/26/2017 12:56:00 PM Fall 1863 Confederate Message well i could fall back to Richmond and displace Army of Tenn but then i would still lose that marker and teh associated SW penalty. Pretty much game over. I fall back to Williamsburg so you can deliver the coup de grace

If you capture richmond (destruction of A of Tenn is inevitable) then game over. The penalties plus the penalties from me failing a guaranteed blockade run will put me right next to 0. and then I have War Guilt coming at end of turn to push it over.

550 4/26/2017 11:52:00 AM Fall 1863 Confederate Message I agree with your sentiments of message 546. While I would have loved to take your cav gen away for a turn...i knew i would never have wanted to fight that battle without playing that card and it didn't feel right using the knowledge of the battle to help me make a different decision. but i agree with your logic and the principle behind it. also, by winning that battle for sure due to cav card, i was able to buy a little more time for round to end and maybe even save Richmond.

i like your idea for how we move forward in similar situations.
549 4/26/2017 11:37:00 AM Fall 1863 Confederate Play Strategy card as Operations #48: 3 / Brazil Recognizes the Confederacy

CSA DRM: +5 Jackson/Wheeler/Pemberton

to the death!
547 4/26/2017 11:30:00 AM Fall 1863 Confederate Message This sledgehammer effect is really hurting. Grant doing exactly what he did in real life, keep extracting losses even at 1-2 Kill/Death Ratio because he had more men and supplies to lose.
546 4/26/2017 2:17:00 AM Fall 1863 Union Message And as a comment on the issue about other player jumping ahead before giving time to play interruption cards.

The way I handled these kind of situations in all my previous games, in FtP and other, is that you will just voluntarily give edge to your opponent. Meaning that if your opponent jumps ahead without giving a chance to react, you are allowed to use the knowledge of rolls and everything before deciding if you want to alter the situation with a cardplay. In the previous situation, if the rolls were such that playing your card wouldn't have made difference, you would have been allowed to just hold back that Detached cavalry for future use.

So I would say that best thing to do is like you said, wait patiently that initiative is handed to you and also clearly declare when you are 'finished'. If you are too eager (like I am 99% of the time) then you just have to live with that, and give your opponent extra advantage.
545 4/26/2017 2:00:00 AM Fall 1863 Union Play Strategy card as Operations #53: 1 / CSS Arkansas
Confederate may place one Ironclad in a controlled port or coastal fort space.

Message from Union:

- Grant activated to attack AoNV again. You can resolve later after getting good night's sleep.
544 4/26/2017 1:56:00 AM Fall 1863 Union Message I'll fight anyway. So lets see. Let us just keep the rolls. Yup, sorry, tried to remember if there was any card to be played and I thought there wasn't. Later, we'll just let the attacker resolve.

Modifiers were:
+6DRM for CSA
+3DRM for USA

Rolls were 4 and 3 so like you said 3-1. Pleasonton then survives and Smith takes the bullet
543 4/26/2017 1:52:00 AM Fall 1863 Confederate Play Strategy card as Event #105: 1 / Detached Cavalry
Played prior to a battle against an army possessing one or more cavalry brigades. The ONLY effects are the Armyís Commanding Generalís battle rating (offense or defense) is immediately reduced by 2 and no Cavalry generalís battle ratings may be used in the battle. The effects end at the conclusion of the battle. Cavalry generals are not available for casualty determination. OR: Place one PC marker in any space within four spaces (includes river connections) of a single cavalry brigade. The four space range many not be traced through Northeast Alabama. The space may not contain an enemy SP or fort, but may contain an Ironclad or Torpedoes.

Message from Confederate:
Using this to cripple Grant's command structure and hopefully give me a 3-1 victory
542 4/26/2017 1:51:00 AM Fall 1863 Confederate Message I actually have a card to play. I didn't want to say that because then I figured you might decide to retreat. What is best way to handle that? Always have attacker resolve unless attacker says over to you to retreat or resolve.
Sending my card play bow. Then you can resolve. Sending this from my phone

484 4/25/2017 2:00:00 AM Summer 1863 Union Play Strategy card as Operations #38: 2 / George W. Rains, Increased Gunpowder Production
Confederate immediately places two SPs in any friendly controlled space in Tennessee with an LOC (both SPs are placed in the same space). The SPs cannot be placed in a Pro Union space or one occupied by Union SPs or fort.

Reynolds activated to spread SPs in Florida

479 4/25/2017 1:42:00 AM Summer 1863 Confederate Play Strategy card as Operations #82: 3 / Foreign Intervention - Reshuffle/Remove
Either player can play this card as an EC when Confederate SW is 110+. If this is the last card in a players hand or the second to last and the player holds the Emancipation Proclamation, if the condition is met, it must be played as an EC, if not it can be played as an OC. EFFECTS: 1. Union Blockade reduced by one (cannot become greater than 4 for the remainder of the game). 2. Union -2 SP Reinforcements for the remainder of the game (Union choice). 3. Union SW reduced by 10. Remove from deck if event is played. If card is played as an OC or discarded re-shuffle deck at end of the Strategy Phase.

Message from Confederate:
well this card won't ever be played as an EC this game *le sigh*

don't know what else to do here except try to smash into your army of MO and inflict 2x SP my losses to try to keep pace with the reinforcment disparity...

You can retreat on 2 or less with Pope
478 4/25/2017 1:37:00 AM Summer 1863 Confederate Message I would have let you re-do your decision on combat in Urbanna vs retreat if you would have done it differently based upon rule interpretation. Glad you were right for sake of gameplay.
477 4/25/2017 1:32:00 AM Summer 1863 Union Message Ok no problem. I was just doing the correction move. Whew. :P
476 4/25/2017 1:27:00 AM Summer 1863 Confederate Message wow, someone already answered. I guess Mark H's comments were meant to make the USA not be able to finagle out of something when CSA played it. It is basically nothing that hurts the USA if they get it :(

I will do my move...sorry for the fuss.
475 4/25/2017 1:23:00 AM Summer 1863 Confederate Message But that is 2008...not wanting to be a jerk since you have been so kind in this game but this update to rules in 2014 which is 2nd edition also (and on GMT site) says that he has clarified Forward to Richmond in design book to force Union player to do something they may not want to do (and that players had been finding all sorts of ways to get out of it in past...i assume he means prior edition).

He only lists 2 exceptions for USA player: 4.62 and 4.63.

You meet the criteria in 4.62 by being 5 spaces away (I have included this as part of my Q in BGG post below) and i think you can probably get out of playing on this criteria since it appears in living rules.

You don't meet criteria 4.63 obviously.

There are multiple FAQs on this subject almost all before 2nd ed printing/2014 living rules off of GMT site. But the only Q&A i found on "F to R" since 2014 living rules update is the one about CSA playing it with USA player having 0 cards left in hand.

474 4/25/2017 1:07:00 AM Summer 1863 Union Message https://www.boardgamegeek.com/article/2007242#2007242

Found this thread on BGG. Quote by Mark:

"The Forward to Richmond card does not have to be played by the Union or the Confederate player as an event, it is a choice. It is rare for the Confederate player not to play this card as an event, but there are circumstances where they would not want to."
473 4/25/2017 1:04:00 AM Summer 1863 Union Message But I dont find anything that says that I have to play the card for its event. That wording is used on Emancipation and Foreign intervention events.
