498 5/25/2017 8:11:00 AM Fall 1864 Confederate Message John –
I agree with you that you cannot get to the 50 SW required at the end of 1864 and I accept your concession. As has been the case with our campaigns, the back and forth has been interesting with ups and downs for both of us. There was no one point where it became clear how things would turn out.

Once I had my six forts committed early on I realized my only path to the north would lie most likely through WV, the Shenandoah Valley being a tougher route. You realized this and for the longest time kept a strong barrier (often 6SPs with forts in key places like Pittsburg, Harpers Ferry and Frederick) in place. You only reduced that near the end when I had to stay in VA and you were pushing troops forward. I decided to hang onto as much of the South (TX in particular) as I could and keep a balance of forces and GOs in areas as needed. Not losing key GOs till some later in the campaign was helpful. Punishing losses inflicted by you were barely made up by just enough forces and Cav GOs nearby to plug the gaps. It indeed could have gone in your favor with the big battles in VA. Good game.

I would welcome another go at the game. I have no preference for a side, please you choose. I do have a suggested game name we have not used – "When Johnnie Comes Marching Home Again". What do you think? I have copied what I like to have from this game so you can delete it when you wish to.

Gene

497 5/24/2017 9:05:00 PM Fall 1864 Union Message Gene -

At this point, I am willing to concede the game. If I had taken the resource space, then I may have been able to take back Kentucky and survive the turn. As it is, there is no way I can get to 50 SW at the end of the turn. Just too many large battle losses without enough to show for it. Good game -- probably not the first time it has ever happened, but the first time I have heard of the CSA winning between not-new players when the CSA did not have any successful invasions of the north. Well done.

Let me know if you want to set up to go again and I will do when I get back tomorrow -- probably early afternoon.

John

415 5/23/2017 9:09:00 AM Summer 1864 Union Play Strategy card as Operations #126: 1 / Valley Devastation
If Union infantry SPs occupy all three Shenandoah Valley spaces the Union player places a destroyed Resource marker in all Shenandoah Valley spaces. These destroyed Resource markers cannot be removed and prevent the Confederate player from using the Shenandoah valley as a supply source for the remainder of the game. Remove from deck if event is played.

Message from Confederate:
Your last battle broke up the “dream team” of defense (3 3 def GOs). Trying to patch AoNV up.

Activate AoMS 4-0. Richmond pu Wheeler and 1 n6-1, Johnston and 1 remain; Hanover; Fredericksburg; Manassas d Wheeler and 5 n1-0, AoNV 6-1 (AoNV was 1SP, but a clarification is being sought for if it should have been 2-0); and return to Hanover. File coming.
412 5/23/2017 8:24:00 AM Summer 1864 Confederate Message Thank you for asking on Consimworld, would be good to know.

I also noted the ONLY word. It also states that "The effects end at the conclusion of the battle" To me it creates the situation for this battle only, the lower rating I mentioned as it is less than Lee's for the battle.

Some cards can leave a little doubt in them. You mentioned that you think the card would have said the army is treated as though it has no cavalry for the duration of the battle. It does say "no Cavalry general's battle ratings may be used in the battle". Some might try to say it is as if the Cavalry was not present, but that would exceed the scope of the card.

My premise is simple, Sherman to 1, less than Lee, so only 1 other GO. Let's see what response you get back.

I will not let this linger for my next play. There is no doubt I have to act on behalf of the AoNV or their taking action. Please give me a little time to ponder, but will be back before long.

I brought up Skype and will check there and here when back at the PC.
411 5/23/2017 7:39:00 AM Summer 1864 Union Message I don't think 7.42 applies here.

Here is the (partial) wording on the card: "... The ONLY effects are the Army’s Commanding General’s battle rating (offense or defense) is immediately reduced by 2 and no Cavalry general’s battle ratings may be used in the battle. ..."

Since the card has the word "ONLY" in all caps, I take that to mean that the commanding general's battle rating is reduced by 2 and no cav general can be used -- otherwise, I think the card would have said the army is treated as though it has no cavalry for the duration of the battle.

I will ask on Consimworld forum -- response thee is usually pretty quick from either Mark Hermann or one of the game developers.
410 5/23/2017 6:48:00 AM Summer 1864 Confederate Message Observation and question on the large battle between your AoMO and the AoNV.

The bc I played reduced the CG's (Sherman's) battle rating by 2 and no Cav could be used. I viewed the reduction to 1 for Sherman to then mean that he now had a lesser battle rating than Lee. (7.42 B)

Given that, he should only have been able to use his temporary battle rating of 1 with the rating of ONE other GO, giving him a total of 2. The change in the battle is only for the losses within AoNV - it would have decreased from 4* to 3. That is very key to me at this stage in the game.

Do you agree?

Lastly, I forgot to mention when Forrest was killed. One SP to the game track; AoNV now 1-0. You can adjust your map for this or know it will be wrapped up in my next file.

Also, I arranged the map to reflect 13-1 for the AoMO in Frederick, having taken in the 4SPs that were there.

I have to get out of programs now to install some updates on my PC, also to figure out what to do in this game. I would like to know your answer on what I addressed for it can have some bearing on my next move.
409 5/23/2017 6:31:00 AM Summer 1864 Confederate Message Of course it is Forrest.

Pegram would be the replacement, but given the three turn return rule for Cavalry, there is not enough time to replace Forrest.

My question/clarification of the last battle coming up.

403 5/22/2017 6:24:00 PM Summer 1864 Confederate Play Strategy card as Event #105: 1 / Detached Cavalry
Played prior to a battle against an army possessing one or more cavalry brigades. The ONLY effects are the Army’s Commanding General’s battle rating (offense or defense) is immediately reduced by 2 and no Cavalry general’s battle ratings may be used in the battle. The effects end at the conclusion of the battle. Cavalry generals are not available for casualty determination. OR: Place one PC marker in any space within four spaces (includes river connections) of a single cavalry brigade. The four space range many not be traced through Northeast Alabama. The space may not contain an enemy SP or fort, but may contain an Ironclad or Torpedoes.
