649 11/16/2018 2:59:00 AM 347-336 BC Gaul Change Gaul player Gaul player changed from Jonathan F to Roderick Lee
648 11/10/2018 8:34:00 PM 347-336 BC Greek Message Agreed -- let's delete this game.
647 11/10/2018 2:42:00 AM 347-336 BC Gaul Message you can delete now that we found the other guy for a4th
646 11/5/2018 3:42:00 AM 347-336 BC Roman Message Ok, four player it is.

But, what happened to our fifth player originally?
645 11/4/2018 8:40:00 PM 347-336 BC Gaul Message I agree with dan. I would love to play fight player but I think I will need to do that live. The one game of five player that I got going staled out at end of turn 1, ironically due to the Carthaginian player who missed out on a turn 1 victory by only 1 point.
644 11/4/2018 6:42:00 PM 347-336 BC Greek Message Given our game completion rate, I'd rather go with 4-players :)
643 11/4/2018 5:14:00 PM 347-336 BC Roman Message Hmm, I'm seeing Gaul in my future :-)

Y'know, I went back to look at Dan's original request from May 2017, and in the comments thread, we had 5 people. Obviously, this is a four player game, but I don't remember what happened to our five-player game. Did one of the respondents duck out before we even started?

I bring this up cause I posted for another four-player game, but I figured I'd check on how you two feel about a five-player game.
642 11/4/2018 11:57:00 AM 347-336 BC Greek Message Changing factions sounds good; I'm also playing Gaul right now in another game so a different faction would help keep things straight.
641 11/3/2018 5:57:00 PM 347-336 BC Gaul Message I can post tomorrow if Rod doesn't do it before then. Everyone ok trying a different power or do you have a request??
640 11/2/2018 10:28:00 AM 347-336 BC Greek Message Sounds great to me! I haven't posted before on the request lists so maybe I shouldn't be the one to do that.
639 11/2/2018 2:28:00 AM 347-336 BC Gaul Message what do you guys think??
638 10/31/2018 12:45:00 AM 347-336 BC Gaul Message I think Dan has a good hold on this. nobody has bloodied him and he has Carthage on the run. I say we post for a 4th and a new game. woudl one of y'all like to do the honors?? good game to you both and congrats to Dan.

i have another game ongoing with E-S right now so i would prefer to not be Gauls again or ES but other than that, I am fne.
637 10/29/2018 9:56:00 AM 347-336 BC Greek Message I'm fine with either option.
636 10/29/2018 5:37:00 AM 347-336 BC Roman Message Talk about an inopportune time to lose a player.

Perhaps, this game is just cursed. I hate to leave a game unfinished as I see that there's still potential here. We can try finding yet another replacement, or we can just start over.

I'm willing to concede to the Greeks and just start a whole new game. It's probably easier, but I'm certainly willing to entertain the possibility of continuing.
635 10/28/2018 2:53:00 AM 347-336 BC Gaul Message sorry to hear that Tim. Dan and Rod, what would you like to do?
634 10/26/2018 11:51:00 AM 347-336 BC Etruscan-Samnite Message I sorry, but I'm going to have to drop out. I thought a Vassal game would be fun, but it obvious I can't keep up. My apologies.

633 10/18/2018 11:16:00 PM 347-336 BC Roman Message place siege 0 on Capua

this will require public confirmation from the Samnites before proceeding

632 10/18/2018 12:09:00 PM 347-336 BC Greek Message Will stay inside Neapolisí walls.
631 10/18/2018 10:07:00 AM 347-336 BC Gaul Message Consider me out of it for any and all card reactions unless I am targeted directly

also, someone want to volunteer to handle attrition and siege/subjugation?
627 10/9/2018 9:23:00 PM 347-336 BC Etruscan-Samnite Message The Samnites agree to an alliance with Rome!
626 10/9/2018 2:09:00 AM 347-336 BC Greek Message Yea, I think that's right.

624 10/7/2018 8:41:00 PM 347-336 BC Roman Message Sorry. You neutralized Caralis over a month ago, and I didn't have my map open at the time.

Question to all:

By my count, Gaul has played both of his Desperate Times, and no one else has played any?

619 9/28/2018 9:53:00 AM 347-336 BC Greek Message Don't believe I need to roll. Not moving to a Carthaginian-controlled port.
618 9/28/2018 9:45:00 AM 347-336 BC Gaul Message No cards for me which leaves Tim to react then Dan can roll if not cancelled
617 9/28/2018 2:39:00 AM 347-336 BC Roman Message Greek move requires a naval combat roll
Rome will not play any reaction cards

Message from Greek:
Greeks need a bigger, stronger wall! Card text: "-2 to siege rolls at Syracusae for the rest of the game (place marker)."
599 8/16/2018 2:40:00 PM 347-336 BC Gaul Message Always good to clarify. Thanks Tim. Since multiple NPA can be played a turn as well as alliance proposals get made after playing cards itís alwahs good practice to state when done.

Now how about you stop targeting the Gauls who are in the middle of the pack and start recruiting more Carthaginians already!
598 8/16/2018 1:33:00 PM 347-336 BC Etruscan-Samnite Message to clarify - I only want to play the neutral power activates - then end my turn. So on to Greece.
597 8/15/2018 9:39:00 PM 347-336 BC Etruscan-Samnite Play Strategy card - Event #23: 2 / Neutral Power Activates

Message from Etruscan-Samnite:
Since this said to activate as a 3 value - that means I can place 1 cu as reinforcement? If so I'll play this to add one CU to the Trans-alpine Gauls
596 8/13/2018 1:30:00 AM 347-336 BC Gaul Message Tim and the E/S are up now.
595 8/13/2018 1:29:00 AM 347-336 BC Gaul Play Strategy card - Operations #36: 3 / "Vae Victis!"

Message from Gaul:
using this for OPs. add 1 CU to my leader up Mediolanum
594 8/13/2018 1:27:00 AM 347-336 BC Gaul Play Strategy card - Event #21: 2 / Neutral Power Activates

Message from Gaul:
let's add a fresh CU to Hamilcar so he doesn't get trounced in Sicily first.

(*note to Tim: i can do this because my turn brought on Action Round 3 which cleared the minor power activation chits...nobody can activate Carthage the rest of AR 3 now though).
593 8/13/2018 1:17:00 AM 347-336 BC Gaul Message finally getting a chance to chime in also on the talk about TOC. I have enjoyed playing it both live with game group and some online. i do like it but i think it will be greatly improved with the expansion which will double the influence card options among other things like allowing the emperor to take the field.

also, if you are looking for a quick paced deck builder, you should look into "Hands in the Sea" which is shipping its second edition right now. it's quite excellent and a big step up in improvement over the engine from A Few Acres that it got its start from.
592 8/13/2018 1:14:00 AM 347-336 BC Gaul Message preparing to make my play and BTW, i did finally dig up an answer to that question way back from 11/29/17. The Gaul shoudl have had the option to do a subjugation roll on the independent city (we played they didn't get to since they had turned it indy by looting during turn). all they can do though is of course, make it a level 1 city of their own that cannot have loyalty raised.
591 8/10/2018 4:03:00 PM 347-336 BC Gaul Message Hey guys, sorry but Iíve been dealing with some personal and work issues all week but I will be able to make sometime this weekend to make my move.
590 8/7/2018 2:38:00 AM 347-336 BC Greek Message Checking in -- Gauls?
589 7/29/2018 5:24:00 PM 347-336 BC Gaul Message Moving tonight. Wish I could have made it to WBC. Maybe in a couple of years. I am going to BGG Con this November for first time ever unless my wife gives birth early or relapses into bed rest condition by then.

Any of you going to BGGC?
Enjoy Toc, I think itís really fun. Itís light but good
588 7/29/2018 1:07:00 AM 347-336 BC Gaul Message finishing up a week long vacation. I'll be moving soon.
587 7/27/2018 8:04:00 PM 347-336 BC Greek Message Gauls are up?
586 7/24/2018 3:11:00 AM 347-336 BC Roman Message I knew nothing about the game (not even that Wray is the designer) other than the fact that is has been, for around a year, one of the constantly requested games on the BGG Cyberboard/ACTS/Vassal list.

I can see your pov regarding a deckbuilder, but I would assert that it's a matter of perspective. If you treat it like a regular deckbuilder, then yes, maybe it doesn't have enough variety and/or is too long for a deckbuilder.

I'm intrigued by the idea of a deckbuilder mechanic in what would probably still be classified as a wargame. So, I'm viewing it as a wargame as opposed to a deckbuilder. Thus, the idea of "too long" seems less of an issue to me. Similarly, with limited choice of actions, which also should not be a problem in a wargame. (Abstracting a wargame is, simplistically, move (attack/retreat/reinforce/deploy) or do something other than move which will vary depending on where the game scenario sits on the strategy-tactics continuum).

I haven't played it yet, but maybe I'll get in a game sometime this week. If not, I'll look to jump into one on the BGG August 2018 list.
585 7/23/2018 11:35:00 PM 347-336 BC Greek Message I only go to Pacificon since it's local. WBC sounds great though -- if I could travel to one, I'd go there :)

I tried Time of Crisis a few months ago. What did you think? I like the idea of a faster-paced, deck-building game but thought: (1) not enough card variety, and (2) not quite smooth and fast-playing enough.

If you get the chance, I recommend trying the Hamilcar scenario on the new Hannibal edition.
584 7/23/2018 3:47:00 AM 347-336 BC Roman Play Strategy card - Event #29: 3 / Cities Garrisoned

Message from Roman:
as event:
"Place 1 Roman CU in each of 3 Roman controlled walled city spaces as if reinforcements."

1 CU each in Narnia and Praeneste (both to 5) and Capua (to 4)

done, Vassal log upcoming
583 7/23/2018 3:45:00 AM 347-336 BC Roman Play Strategy card - Event #29: 3 / Cities Garrisoned

Message from Roman:
as event
1 CU each in Narnia and Praeneste (both to 5) and Capua (to 4)
582 7/23/2018 3:42:00 AM 347-336 BC Roman Message Greetings all, from WBC. Anyone else here?

Do any of you play Time of Crisis? Yesterday, I attended a demo from Wray Ferrell (aka Sword of Rome designer) for Time of Crisis, which is also his design.

Ok, on to my move.
581 7/20/2018 1:15:00 AM 347-336 BC Greek Message Don't see a problem with that.

Flip PC at Selinus and make Caralis independent.

Rome's up.
580 7/20/2018 1:00:00 AM 347-336 BC Roman Message I don't see a prohibition or clarification in the rules, so I believe Hamilcar may retreat by sea even though Carthage does not control Messina.

retreat to Panormus, by sea
if another player can cite an FAQ or errata, then it will be a land retreat to Panormus, losing an additional CU
579 7/20/2018 12:42:00 AM 347-336 BC Gaul Message shaded cards are indeed response cards, so just look for card type and usually the card text makes it clear it's meant as a response type action.
578 7/19/2018 9:46:00 PM 347-336 BC Greek Message Carthaginians lose 3 CUs and Greeks lose 1 CU.

Romans to decide on Carthaginian retreat, then Greeks receive 2 points of political will.

Message from Greek:
Top 3 dice are Greek and bottom 3 are Carthaginian

Greek modifiers are:
+1 control of space
+1 leadership differential
+2 hoplites card

+4
576 7/19/2018 9:42:00 PM 347-336 BC Greek Message That's a good question... I usually go by the text of the card and check if it's applicable. For example, the *response card* I just played stated specifically "Play before combat rolls in a battle involving a Greek army". It's a *response card* because the event is not played as a regular action round.
575 7/19/2018 9:30:00 PM 347-336 BC Etruscan-Samnite Message I don't want to play a card. But I do have a question - reading 7.1.1 says I can play a card "with shading around the title", what does that equal in ACTS?
574 7/16/2018 11:22:00 PM 347-336 BC Greek Message Waiting for Tim to confirm whether he'll play a card on behalf of Carthage in the Battle of Messina, and then I'll do the rolls. As you know, anything can happen in battles in this game -- nothing is guaranteed.
573 7/16/2018 1:07:00 AM 347-336 BC Gaul Message it's alright, Tim is still learning the ropes. this will likely be a bloodbath.

Gauls have no cards available to help the Carthaginian cause. I wish the envoys had already been sent so that Rome was in position to play the alliance treaty card.

:(
572 7/14/2018 6:14:00 PM 347-336 BC Roman Message The difference is that Carthage could possibly withdraw to Panormus, avoiding battle. Also 13:10 does not give a force ratio bonus DRM.

Rome plays no cards.
571 7/14/2018 5:59:00 PM 347-336 BC Greek Message It's not clear-cut to me that moving against Messina was a mistake. Lilybaeuem would have given Greeks a +1 force ratio bonus.

Anyway, I hope once the Greeks get beaten down by 4 enemies at once the same courtesy will be extended to the next guy who has a 1 VP point lead.
570 7/14/2018 5:51:00 PM 347-336 BC Greek Play Strategy card - Event #5: 1 / Hoplites

Message from Greek:
Greeks will play the following card: "Play before combat rolls in a battle involving a Greek army. +2 to Greek combat roll. If Greeks lose, they must remove an additional CU."

Anyone else to play a card on behalf of Carthage? Will wait for rolls until we have explicit confirmations from everyone.
569 7/14/2018 4:53:00 PM 347-336 BC Roman Message I fear that the Greeks have a card to play, so to minimize possible retreat losses, Hamilcar will not attempt to intercept.

Greeks to play a battle card

note, to Etruscans, this is exactly why Carthage should have attacked Lilybaeum, instead. They would have a retreat path, and, in fact, the Greeks would have to attack across unfriendly territory and be at risk for greater retreat losses
568 7/13/2018 5:12:00 PM 347-336 BC Gaul Message Sorry, I missed that. Then itís to Rod to make decision for the brave Carthaginian forces.
567 7/13/2018 10:42:00 AM 347-336 BC Greek Message From reading the log file, Tim explicitly said he was passing on playing his regular card.
566 7/13/2018 10:40:00 AM 347-336 BC Gaul Message Does Tim not want to take his own card play?

Tim, you can activate one neutral each turn as well as play a card for yourself.
Did you just want to play the neutral activation?
565 7/13/2018 10:36:00 AM 347-336 BC Greek Play Strategy card - Operations #19: 2 / Neutral Power Activates

Message from Greek:
Dionysius + 10 CUs march out:
1-Catina
2-Messana
Carthaginian reaction? (Roman decision)
564 7/12/2018 9:54:00 PM 347-336 BC Etruscan-Samnite Message Second try on the ES turn:

I'll play Neutral Power activates for Carthage

#22: 2 / Neutral Power Activates
"Play during your action phase, place marker. Activate the Volsci, Carthage or the Transalpine Gauls with a 3-value action if they have not been activated this round."

Activate Hamilcar in Panormus with all 10 CUs - Hamilcar moves Panormus - Himera - Messana and stop.

I put a an addition file on dropbox removing the siege.
563 7/12/2018 4:16:00 PM 347-336 BC Etruscan-Samnite Message Sorry about that - I'll get in and fix this evening.
562 7/11/2018 10:05:00 PM 347-336 BC Greek Message Tim -- would you please list the steps of the activation here on ACTs? Depending on specific movement, I may have options to intercept/evade/play a response card.

Additionally, in this particular case Hamilcar can only siege a city after being activated at a previously established siege.

If you were to activate Hamilcar this round and move him to Messina and end his movement there, that would establish the siege. During a subsequent activation he would be eligible to roll on the siege table.
