740 6/13/2017 4:46:00 PM Summer 1863 Union Message Okay, I'll play the Confederates.

I think I've told you that when I played Trevor in all our games that I played the Union all but one, maybe two, of our games so I'm a lot less familiar with CSA tricks and tactics.

The consensus online with FTP, with it's fairly steep learning curve about what to do and when to do it, is that between two beginners it favors the CSA, between two intermediates it favors the USA and between two experts it favors the CSA again.

Anyway, give me a few minutes to end this game and set up the new one and we can draw cards and dream about our first moves for next week!
739 6/13/2017 4:41:00 PM Summer 1863 Confederate Message That sounds awesome, for the gig.

For FtP III "the sequel's sequel", you choose sides. I love surprises…er, outside of games, that is.
738 6/13/2017 4:38:00 PM Summer 1863 Union Message Since the setup is a given, we could choose sides now by methods 1, 2 (or 3) and draw cards and be ready to go on Monday or Tuesday.
737 6/13/2017 4:36:00 PM Summer 1863 Union Message Yes, playing at the winery across the highway (Shadow Mountain Vineyards) on Sunday. Have a both my daughters, their husbands, my two grandsons, my son-in-law's parents and brother, and my ex- attending. Will be a lot of fun. Probably be in the 90's which means I'll have to hydrate a lot to prevent cramps in my fingers and hands (and lower arms!).
736 6/13/2017 4:34:00 PM Summer 1863 Union Message Sounds good, Monday or Tuesday. Your choice as to sides first, or we roll a die? If neither of these are your preference, third option is I choose.
735 6/13/2017 4:33:00 PM Summer 1863 Confederate Message I have an event on Thursday…and a photo project (will describe in sepcor)
You have a gig on Sunday?

How about we re-start, Monday or Tuesday?
I'll be happy to play either side.
734 6/13/2017 4:30:00 PM Summer 1863 Union Message Yes, actually worse. With Texas OOS Price does attrition followed by foraging (another attrition) so he'd be down to 2SP. I can get 6SP in Sabine City and have 3:1 ration in battle with no drm's available to Price (not even his leadership I believe). Probably would eliminate him and allow the corps in Sabine City to immediately take up conquering Louisiana.
733 6/13/2017 4:28:00 PM Summer 1863 Union Message It's a very tricky wording on Foreign Intervention but I think I have to hang onto it as my last card to use it as an OC and then if your SW is 110 or higher I must play the Event. So if I use it earlier than my last card my only option would be to allow Foreign Intervention. I guess I can see very late in the game playing it before the last card to preserve a Major Campaign as my last card but otherwise, it's always going to be last and used for OC or the event.
732 6/13/2017 4:26:00 PM Summer 1863 Confederate Message So, it was even worse than I imagined.
731 6/13/2017 4:22:00 PM Summer 1863 Union Play Strategy card as Operations #82: 3 / Foreign Intervention - Reshuffle/Remove
Either player can play this card as an EC when Confederate SW is 110+. If this is the last card in a players hand or the second to last and the player holds the Emancipation Proclamation, if the condition is met, it must be played as an EC, if not it can be played as an OC. EFFECTS: 1. Union Blockade reduced by one (cannot become greater than 4 for the remainder of the game). 2. Union -2 SP Reinforcements for the remainder of the game (Union choice). 3. Union SW reduced by 10. Remove from deck if event is played. If card is played as an OC or discarded re-shuffle deck at end of the Strategy Phase.

Message from Union:
Actually, Arknasas falls this turn and Texas is OOS. I can activate Meade in St. Louis and move through Arkansas sewing enough SPs to convert four more spaces there to USA PC (need 6) and end in Shreveport leaving Marshall unable to connect to another RC.
730 6/13/2017 4:20:00 PM Summer 1863 Confederate Message Also, you gain one state 'won' for each 25 point SW differential.
At the end of this turn (assuming you take Kentucky), you will have 4 states won out of the 10 you need -- and Arkansas and Texas should fall, next Turn.
729 6/13/2017 4:19:00 PM Summer 1863 Union Message So that leaves the question of what we want to do. I know we like to take breaks after games to let our brains recover.
728 6/13/2017 4:18:00 PM Summer 1863 Union Message I just read it and see that the border states DO count for the 10 needed for a victory. That makes it a lot easier for me and I think I can achieve it.
727 6/13/2017 4:16:00 PM Summer 1863 Union Message I do accept your honorable offer of cessation of hostilities!

If you want to we could restart the game this afternoon and switch sides or keep the same. There's a fairly steep learning curve to this game and you haven't seen it all yet!

Note that since no SW victory is possible (I believe) I have to take 10 states and this doesn't count the border states.
726 6/13/2017 4:13:00 PM Summer 1863 Union Message Do you truly wish to surrender? I know it looks bad and the rest of the game is you trying to slow me down and concede as little territory as possible but if you look at the victory conditions you are in quite a good position to win. It's the old "just do a bit better than historically and win" situation. You will be a punching bag but there are times when you will get to attack. A victory by SW is just about out of the question for either of us at this point. I will play on but also be happy to end the game, take a break of a couple of days and play again either this game, same sides or switch, or something else.
725 6/13/2017 4:10:00 PM Summer 1863 Confederate Message Having proved beyond doubt our mettle and metal, the Confederacy humbles asks the Union to accept our surrender, before the South is destroyed.
724 6/13/2017 4:10:00 PM Summer 1863 Union Message The AotT absorbs the 2SP in Fredericksburg (now 10).

Union SW is -5 and -3 for FoW: now 94(-)
CSA SW is +3 and +2 FoW: now 81(+)
723 6/13/2017 4:08:00 PM Summer 1863 Union Message If I'd rolled a 5 or 6 Mr. Burns would have won that battle!

You inflict 5* on AotT (now 8SP) and there is some SW implication. Mr. Burns and the AotT retreat to Fredericksburg.
722 6/13/2017 4:05:00 PM Summer 1863 Union Message AotT inflicts 4SP loss on Lee and the ANV.
721 6/13/2017 4:05:00 PM Summer 1863 Confederate Message Hey, now that's funny.

718 6/13/2017 4:04:00 PM Summer 1863 Union Message Burnside will defend with his +1 and use McClellan for +2 more and throw in Wilders Brigade for a total of +4DRM.
717 6/13/2017 4:03:00 PM Summer 1863 Union Message Okay, we have a large battle!

Burnside and AotT will attempt to retreat before battle to Fredericksburg. Succeed on 3 or less.
715 6/13/2017 3:54:00 PM Summer 1863 Confederate Play Strategy card as Operations #112: 2 / Severe Storms at Sea
Interrupt card, cancel a Naval movement initiated by a 3OC. This card cannot cancel a Naval movement initiated by an Event card (including a naval movement initiated by a campaign card event). Remove from deck if event is played.

Message from Confederate:
Ops.
ANV attacks AoT and Burnside.
We will have one big battle (maybe), then the Confederacy will surrender.
714 6/13/2017 3:47:00 PM Summer 1863 Union Message Oops, its not Mud March so Pope (6) is sitting in Cincy enjoying a baseball game and sipping beer.
713 6/13/2017 3:45:00 PM Summer 1863 Union Message I will stick with my second move. Grant and AotP in Nashville with 6SP, 1SP in Clarkesville, Bowling Green USA PC, Nashville USA PC and destroyed RC. SW as specified.

Over to you for last card play.
712 6/13/2017 3:43:00 PM Summer 1863 Union Message I just saw your interrupt. Pope is in Falmouth with 6 SP. I will think about my second activation and possibly re-designate.
711 6/13/2017 3:41:00 PM Summer 1863 Union Message Second activation is Army move, Grant and AotP(7), drop 1SP in Clarksville (6)->Bowling Green, spend MP to convert to USA control->Nashville, spend 1MP to convert and burn the Resource Center (+5/-5 SW) end move.

CSA SW: 76(-)
USA SW: 102(+)

Over to you.
710 6/13/2017 3:36:00 PM Summer 1863 Confederate Play Strategy card as Event #107: 1 / Guerilla Raids Delay Supply
Play as interrupt to cancel the activation of any Union general with a strategy rating of 2 or 3.

Message from Confederate:
Event - I'll play this (if I can) to cancel activation of Pope.
709 6/13/2017 3:34:00 PM Summer 1863 Union Play Strategy card as Operations #85: 3 / Minor Campaign
Conduct up to two moves or conduct one special army-size naval move. No SP, general, or army marker may be moved twice with the same campaign card. You must move a different force each move.

Message from Union:
EC, two activations. First activation is Pope in Cincy as a corps move (6)->Falmouth->Frankfort, drop 2SP (4)->Louisville, pick up 2P (6) leaving 1SP there->Lebanon, drop 1SP (5)->Somerset and stop.

Second move shortly by SEPCOR.
708 6/13/2017 3:27:00 PM Summer 1863 Confederate Play Strategy card as Operations #11: 2 / Nathaniel Lyon
Union places or flips three PC markers in Missouri. The spaces may not contain Confederate SPs or forts.

Message from Confederate:
Ops.
AoM?Lebanon (3) -> Somerset ---> Shelbyville.
Over to you.
707 6/13/2017 3:23:00 PM Summer 1863 Union Play Strategy card as Operations #61: 3 / Ship Island/Key West
Union Blockade Level is increased by one. In addition, if Fort Philip/Jackson does not contain a CSA SP place a friendly PC marker in that space.

Message from Union:
OC Army move. Activate Grant and AotP(7)->New Madridand absorb SP there (8)->Humboldt->McKenzie (hello, my worthy opponents moonshine distillin' ancestors!)->Dover and aborb SP there (9)->Clarksville and spend last MP to convert it to USA PC.

End of move, over to you.
706 6/13/2017 3:22:00 PM Summer 1863 Confederate Message Yes, over to you.
705 6/13/2017 3:19:00 PM Summer 1863 Union Message So I think it's my go and we are good with current position?
704 6/13/2017 3:17:00 PM Summer 1863 Confederate Play Strategy card as Operations #21: 3 / Confederate Overseas Agent
Confederate immediately receives three SPs in any open Blockade Runner Port, no more than one SP per port, but more than one SP per Blockade Zone is permitted. If insufficient ports are available, the excess SPs are lost.

Message from Confederate:
Ops.
Build fort in Vicksburg.
703 6/13/2017 3:16:00 PM Summer 1863 Confederate Return Strategy card to hand #11: 2 / Nathaniel Lyon

Message from Confederate:
Oops - will re-do card play.
702 6/13/2017 3:15:00 PM Summer 1863 Union Message I'm kind of mashing things up. If you re-position your fort to Vicksburg from New Orleans (which I recommend over Memphis) then Price has been in supply all along and can make the move as designated. Your play of the card earlier to build the fort in New Madrid still stands and everything is right!
701 6/13/2017 3:13:00 PM Summer 1863 Union Message As an alternative option, I propose that you move Price to Vicksburg as you designated using the 2OC card you used. You could have extricated him earlier with a card play and THEN built a fort on the river or you could have built the fort in Vicksburg with that 3OC card you used to build the fort in New Madrid. This will lower my SW by 2 (but still on + side)
700 6/13/2017 3:06:00 PM Summer 1863 Union Message Price can't cross the river to Vicksburg due to Union naval control there. Also note (rules 8.1 on LOC and 8.3 on Out Of Supply) Price is OOS because cannot trace a LOC across Union controlled river spaces and the Resource Center in Marshall, TX is not a valid LOC source for Price as it (itself) cannot trace a line to another Resource Center due to Little Rock being destroyed. You can still move Price but he gets no battle DRM and my forces get an extra +2 against him in battle.

Re-designate your move. If you build a fort in Vicksburg you can cross after. I want to offer you another compensation for my blunder at the beginning of the game. I will allow you to re-position your ironclad or fort in New Orleans to Vicksburg (or Memphis). I don't know if you remember but when the first "compensation" was made I pointed out you'd like the fort in either of those two places (later in the game) rather than in New Orleans! We have not violated any movement rules if you take this option and the game can continue with no effect.
699 6/13/2017 2:57:00 PM Summer 1863 Confederate Play Strategy card as Operations #11: 2 / Nathaniel Lyon
Union places or flips three PC markers in Missouri. The spaces may not contain Confederate SPs or forts.

Message from Confederate:
Ops.
Price/Nacogdoches -> Vicksburg (5)
Over to you.
698 6/13/2017 2:49:00 PM Summer 1863 Union Message Capture of Rebel supplies in Little Rock (and incidental burning of non-military buildings brings big headlines in North for a +1 and -1 SW adjustment) Also, USA has destroyed three forts this turn for another +6.

CSA SW: 81(-)
USA SW: 97(+)
697 6/13/2017 2:44:00 PM Summer 1863 Union Play Strategy card as Operations #110: 3 / The Gettysburg Address
Union player gains 3 SW. Remove from deck if event is played.

Message from Union:
OC Army move. Activate Grant and AotP.

AotP (10) spends 1MP to convert New Madrid to USA PC, leaves 1SP in NM (9)->Elizabeth, AR (two space intercept?), convert to USA PC, leave 1SP (8)->Little Rock, convert to USA PC (we have SW adjustment due to destroying Resource Center, will do in SEPCOR), leave 2SP (6)->Elizabeth (absorbs SP, 7)

End of move.
696 6/13/2017 2:39:00 PM Summer 1863 Union Message No hindrance. My move in a minute.
695 6/13/2017 2:36:00 PM Summer 1863 Confederate Play Strategy card as Operations #94: 2 / Strategy Board
Union player may make a naval move with up to three SPs plus one general.

Message from Confederate:
Ops.
AoT/McKenzie -> Lexington, Corinth, Grand Jct., Memphis -- if unhindered.
End of move, over to you.
694 6/13/2017 2:32:00 PM Summer 1863 Union Message No leader casualties possible due to force ratio 3:1.
693 6/13/2017 2:31:00 PM Summer 1863 Union Message AotP loses 1SP(10), CSA SP's and fort elim.

689 6/13/2017 2:20:00 PM Summer 1863 Union Message AotP(7) spends 1MP to convert Columbus to USA control, leaves 1SP in Columbus(6)->Paducah, drops 1SP(5)->Cairo->Ironton, absorbs all 6SP there and Hooker (11)->Greensville->New Madrid

Medium battle, AotP has +5 leadership and +2 for 3:1 odds. You may double space intercept with a card.
688 6/13/2017 2:12:00 PM Summer 1863 Union Play Strategy card as Operations #70: 2 / Gustavus Fox, Ironclad Building Program
The Union Amphibious Assault modifier is increased by two.

Message from Union:
OC Army move. Activate Grant and the AotP.

Move via SEPCOR.
687 6/13/2017 2:07:00 PM Summer 1863 Confederate Play Strategy card as Operations #128: 3 / Union Naval Supply Shortage
The Union blockade level is decreased by one. Remove from deck if event is played.

Message from Confederate:
Ops.
Build a Rebel fort in New Madrid.
Over to you.
686 6/13/2017 2:03:00 PM Summer 1863 Union Message End of move, over to you.
685 6/13/2017 2:02:00 PM Summer 1863 Union Message I guess what I should say is the fort and ironclad in New Orleans keep the river closed to free Union navigation but all your current LOCs across blue bars are closed. Look closely at Little Rock and that area also.
684 6/13/2017 2:01:00 PM Summer 1863 Union Message AotP loses 1SP (7), CSA SP's, fort and ironclad eliminated.

The whole river system is now closed to CSA forces. Your fort and ironclad at New Orleans keep it open but no forces can cross at blue bars without building a fort or placing an ironclad.

Message from Union:
Grant battles in Columbus. He can lose this battle if he rolls a 1 and you roll a 6 which is the case in about 75% of our battles!
680 6/13/2017 1:56:00 PM Summer 1863 Union Message It is interesting that there are a few battle cards in the game but the dis-incentive to using them is so powerful. It means losing card count pacing - if the CSA plays one they forfeit going last on the turn and if the USA uses one they give the CSA two plays at the end of the turn. There are a couple of battle cards in the extra 20 cards for the new edition which allow for drawing a replacement card. Trevor and I had another house rule allowing the player to draw a replacement card on all battle cards. It seemed to work well. But there aren't that many battle cards to begin with.
679 6/13/2017 1:52:00 PM Summer 1863 Confederate Message Battle card?
You do make me laugh.
678 6/13/2017 1:51:00 PM Summer 1863 Union Message I am not playing one (battle card).
677 6/13/2017 1:51:00 PM Summer 1863 Union Message If you wish to play a battle card you may do so.
676 6/13/2017 1:48:00 PM Summer 1863 Union Message AotP drops 1SP in Dover (6)->Paducah and picks up 2SP (8)->Columbus. Medium battle. Grant has +5 for leadership and +3 for odds. CSA has +2 for fort (ironclad doesn't help). You cannot intercept this as you already failed intercept against this move and you cannot retreat before battle due to no leader in Columbus.
675 6/13/2017 1:48:00 PM Summer 1863 Confederate Message Ah, the egg shell has been broken (Rebel strategic lines).
It shouldn't be long now...
674 6/13/2017 1:45:00 PM Summer 1863 Union Message AotP spends MP (3) to convert Dover to USA PC.

The river fort line is partially broken. Note that CSA forces may not cross any dark blue bar upriver from Columbus without building a fort or placing an ironclad. Jackson and the AoM only has one way out of KY currently as they cannot cross into Nashville nor attack Dover (though the army can move into Clarksville).
673 6/13/2017 1:41:00 PM Summer 1863 Union Message Ol' AP Hill is wounded but able to recover and come back next turn.
672 6/13/2017 1:40:00 PM Summer 1863 Confederate Message Oh, well.

669 6/13/2017 1:38:00 PM Summer 1863 Union Message AotP loses 3SP (now 7), good shootin' Johnny Reb. CSA force eliminated, CSA fort eliminated.

You have a possible leader loss on a roll of 1. AotP is immune due to combat odds. If Hill survives the leader loss he goes to TRT coming back next turn.

I will continue move after you

667 6/13/2017 1:36:00 PM Summer 1863 Confederate Message 5,81 allows a retreat after a failed interception.
I'll stay and fight.
666 6/13/2017 1:32:00 PM Summer 1863 Union Message I cannot find a rule that says anything about combining intercept with retreat-before-battle. I think in our current case you may attempt to retreat. I think if you had successfully intercepted then r-b-b would not be allowed.
665 6/13/2017 1:30:00 PM Summer 1863 Union Message Oh, and the question remains as to whether you can retreat before battle. I think you can on a 1 in which case, no battle roll for you.
664 6/13/2017 1:28:00 PM Summer 1863 Union Message Because you have the fort, it is not an overrun despite the 10:1 ratio (I think - will go look at rules). In that case you need to roll and have a +3drm. I do a 3* to you automatically but you can get 1, 2 or 3 against me.
663 6/13/2017 1:25:00 PM Summer 1863 Confederate Message Oh, well.

660 6/13/2017 1:20:00 PM Summer 1863 Union Message AotP leaves 2SP in Paducah (10)->Dover

You may intercept/retreat before combat. Not sure if you can attempt to do both so will have to read the rules.
659 6/13/2017 1:17:00 PM Summer 1863 Union Play Strategy card as Operations #91: 2 / Letters of Marque
Increase Confederate SW by 1. Remove from deck if event is played.

Move in SEPCOR.
658 6/13/2017 1:17:00 PM Summer 1863 Confederate Message The 1 SP returns next turn, Morgan on Turn 11.
AoM now 3.
657 6/13/2017 1:15:00 PM Summer 1863 Union Message I had the rule incorrect. It's rule 5.54 and Morgan is placed on the TRT T11 with his SP so AoM is back to 3 strength.
656 6/13/2017 1:13:00 PM Summer 1863 Union Message Would we call that a Pyrrhic victory?
655 6/13/2017 1:11:00 PM Summer 1863 Confederate Message Egads is right.
Okay - AoM now 4.
Over to you.
654 6/13/2017 1:11:00 PM Summer 1863 Union Message Ah, that's how it works. I had forgotten the rules completely in this area.
653 6/13/2017 1:10:00 PM Summer 1863 Union Message Halleck dead, Morgan dead - egads.

AoM is finished with move in Lebanon as you did not have 2:1 advantage.

651 6/13/2017 1:09:00 PM Summer 1863 Union Message You lose your cavalry commander which means we have to read the rules. I think there is a (maybe optional) rule about "replacement" cav commanders but we aren't using optional rules. The SP for the cav stays with the army (does not die with their leader) and becomes infantry.
650 6/13/2017 1:08:00 PM Summer 1863 Confederate Message Morgan dies, goes to track, Turn 11.
