530 11/3/2017 12:14:00 PM Spring 1864 Union Message I lost on ďDavis Tours The SouthĒ!
Where is my Tanto knife?
529 11/3/2017 6:45:00 AM Spring 1864 Confederate Message Rob, this was an absolutely crazy game ! One of the most exciting I ever played.

If I get it right, it's 53/26, which means I'm exactly more than twice (!) and win the game...I clearly stole your victory, Rob.

Comments :
- your only chance here was probably to go with AoP and burn Fayetteville (remember you can place PC without LOC from 1864), had known what card I had left...Hard decision to make without a crystal ball ;
- during your assaults to Richmond with AoP, you could have closed Richmond LOC by going Suffolk and dropping off an SP here, then back to Petersburg (where 1SP garrisons) and attack ;
- Stolen victory it was, very clearly : a lot of luck at the end + never let a capital fort alone !!! I was hopeless at the end and you gave me an desperate opportunity, probably willing to end it up once and for all ;
- just as a reminder, beware the Lincoln election victory conditions (end 1864) during a long game ;
- otherwise you mastered this game, Rob. Your campaign in Virginia was brilliant. The way you closed Lynchburg-Knoxville-Burkeville was perfect. You attritioned properly. You succeeded to create a threat in Tennessee with AoC as well. Very good job, and a clear US strategy to victory. PeÔ or not, by doing this, if you survive 1862 assaults, you win ;
- I still can't find a solution to the attrition problem you underlined. Facts :
1)reinforcements are 18/11 when Naval BLockade is reasonably high
2)with capable US leaders and armies (i.e. from Turn 10), each battle attrition varies between 6/5 to 3/3 more or less =1/1
3)Strat moves = 15/7, let's say 15/11 with Carolina Express
4)if CSA loses Richmond and Virgina, it's 15+12+15=42 SW points ! If you add -4 each turn due to blockade, it means from Turn 10 CSA must have at least 60 points to survive, even more with Emancipation ==> very, very hard
5) absorbing all the western SP ressources progressively to support East is inevitable, but you cannot do it at a faster pace than 7/turn anyway. I don't know if abandoning States to shorten lines would work.
So I think CSA can only think about long-term strategy if he succeeds to gain enough SW with raids and large battles to stand 60 SW instant loss at the end. He must be able to bite Virginia loss and still willing to fight. Otherwise he's doomed (which is, after all, historical).

521 11/2/2017 9:21:00 PM Spring 1864 Union Message This is Epic! I had the SW messed up, so indeed the war goes on...
You have definitely hammered home the lesson to NEVER surrender Phil.
This thing is amazing!
520 11/2/2017 6:54:00 PM Spring 1864 Confederate Message Now we've got SW USA 26- vs CSA 56+...

You are absolutely right about Richmond (by the way, Bragg sent to TT), but don't forget I still lose 5 SW and the flip if my army is destroyed...or you've got other options (Nashville, Fayetteville, amphibious assault on undefended forts...)

The war is not over yet !

And, yes, this is definitely a good bottle and it would be a pity to waste it during the shipping ! Not supposedly the best of its kind, but I love this Ch‚teau and if you don't know it, well...my pleasure to make you discover and enjoy.

515 11/2/2017 1:38:00 PM Spring 1864 Union Message Phil, cannot remove A. Johnston either as he is the highest ranked subordinate. Will remove Bragg, but that still leaves you at +7 DRM in Richmond which guarantees a 3 result in a Capital/Resource space and a hold. Am I missing something? Probably!
I had the SP on top and missed Hooker in Harpers Ferry! Will roll for intercept, and the Unions last chance!
514 11/2/2017 1:16:00 PM Spring 1864 Confederate Message Looks similar to Early's raid in July 1864...funny :-)

Regarding AoTcs : choose one of my subordinate generals (not cav nor Lee) to go to TT
513 11/2/2017 1:12:00 PM Spring 1864 Confederate Message The excitement is not over, Rob !

First of all :
2-6 Frederick(1 including cav) and you still have the possibility to intercept with Battlin' Hooker

then : even if I reach Washington, the SW victory is only assessed at the end of the Turn (not round) for CSA and I will probably not have twice your SW if you take Richmond

but you're right : never ever leave a fortified capital empty...1SP is often enough

Let's see the follow-up...Interception ?
512 11/2/2017 12:23:00 PM Spring 1864 Union Message Looked it up Phil. Cannot be Commanding General, Highest rated general, or Cavalry Brigade. That means Richmond will hold out even if the Army is eliminated as it is a +7 DRM. Sadly, my last card is not a Campaign card, so the Union is defeated by CSA SW greater than 2:1! Let me know if I got all this right when you get a chance. What a turnaround! Fortunately I have just been alerted that my good friend is sending me wine with which to drown my sorrow! They needed to wait for the cool weather to ship it (must be more sensitive to the heat than the usual box of wine I keep in the trunk of my car for emergencies). Thank you Phil for a VERY exciting game (a little too exciting at the end!).
511 11/2/2017 11:49:00 AM Spring 1864 Union Message I'm thinking those guys are moving to DC?
That would be -2 for the forts and -30 for the Capital. Union SW to 22-
Also, I think Richmond has an extra General. If this is the case can Lee be removed? That seems a little harsh?

485 10/25/2017 12:13:00 PM Spring 1864 Union Message Hey, that makes it a monster card at the right time. Thank you for the correct interpretation Phil! I think another 1/2 dozen games with you and I will actually know the rules...
I also did not know the details of detached cavalry. I have a strong feeling Mr. Pei is about to enlighten me to a few more surprises...
Hey, Keep my current move as is, and please donít detach my cavalry!
Republicans in the Senate are denouncing fearless leader. The end is near!
484 10/25/2017 3:51:00 AM Spring 1864 Confederate Message About Detached Cavalry : the only (big) effect is to send one cav leader of an army foraging somewhere else during a battle : so if it was the only one cav in the army, then the army would lose its benefit (interception bonus + possible malus during army vs army) during the battle. Total number of Sps in the army stays the same.
Nothing else. Don't even read the text, which is confusing (malus even against a corps ? bla bla...).
483 10/25/2017 3:44:00 AM Spring 1864 Confederate Message This card is very badly written (as others...the worst being Detached Cavalry)(sorry Mark : your game is a gem but some cards have been written on the corner of a kitchen table): here, single means you only consider one and only one cav brigade (ie you cannot convert one space close to a cav and convert another close to another cav).
Otherwise you can use any one of your cav brigades to do so, even if it's incorporated in an army or a corps.

So maybe rethink about its use and replay as desired.
482 10/24/2017 7:00:00 PM Spring 1864 Union Message Hey, looks like the tournament is starting. I've got an easy first round match-up with one of the Pei boys. Ever heard of them?

480 10/24/2017 12:26:00 PM Spring 1864 Union Play Strategy card as Operations #111: 2 / Wilsonís Raid
Union may place two Union PC markers in any spaces within four spaces (includes river connections) of a single Union cavalry brigade. The four space range CAN be traced through Northeast Alabama. These PC Markers (in contravention of rule 11.3D), CAN be placed in blockade runner ports/ and or resource spaces devoid of Confederate SPs or forts (but may contain an Ironclad or Torpedoes), resulting in their immediate destruction. Remove from deck if event is played.

Hey, want to fly a B-52? They are recalling reserve pilots so they can keep them in the air all the time...like the good old days! Never had a problem with that....other than the occasional inadvertently dropped Hydrogen Bomb. Anyway, the planes are over 60 years old, but I understand they are well maintained....for a 60 year old plane....
479 10/24/2017 4:11:00 AM Spring 1864 Confederate Message Of course AoP can maneuver, Rob. I was confused by despair...

478 10/23/2017 11:29:00 PM Spring 1864 Union Message Phil,

457 10/19/2017 3:57:00 AM Spring 1864 Confederate Message Nice move, Rob. In case you didn't notice, you can even disembark directly at New Bern, which closes the Runner port as well. Or you might want to convert as many NC spaces as possible.

451 10/18/2017 7:59:00 PM Fall 1863 Union Play Strategy card as Operations #82: 3 / Foreign Intervention - Reshuffle/Remove
Either player can play this card as an EC when Confederate SW is 110+. If this is the last card in a players hand or the second to last and the player holds the Emancipation Proclamation, if the condition is met, it must be played as an EC, if not it can be played as an OC. EFFECTS: 1. Union Blockade reduced by one (cannot become greater than 4 for the remainder of the game). 2. Union -2 SP Reinforcements for the remainder of the game (Union choice). 3. Union SW reduced by 10. Remove from deck if event is played. If card is played as an OC or discarded re-shuffle deck at end of the Strategy Phase.

Message from Union:
Smoke in the Cabin! That's gotta be an interesting experience....maybe I should rethink this whole "learning to fly" thing...
Anyway, Intervention finally showed up, a few turns too late to help Dixie.
I'm going to try another "Invasion", cause the first two worked so well!
Curtis with 2 SP from D.C. to Morehead City, North Carolina.
Will set deck for re-shuffle and proceed with end of turn stuff
450 10/18/2017 2:38:00 AM Fall 1863 Confederate Play Strategy card as Operations #116: 2 / Confederate River Flotilla
Roll the die, if the result is greater than the Union Amphibious Assault modifier, reduce the Union Amphibious Assault modifier by one, other wise no effect. Remove from deck if event is played.

Message from Confederate:
Too bad for the confederate flotilla.

Message from Confederate:
Yeah, some aircraft even experienced smoke/fumes in cockpit events due to ashes and dust saturated atmosphere ! Which means an emergency descent...never good 1)for the heart 2)for a squeezed operation...

God, these railroad logistical problems drive me crazy...
448 10/17/2017 11:14:00 AM Fall 1863 Union Play Strategy card as Event #125: 1 / Confederate Locomotive shortage
The Union player may randomly remove one strategy card from the Confederate hand, which is discarded. Remove from deck if event is played.

Message from Union:
I get to go last again, but very sad to see Mr. Stonewall back in Virginia!
Phil, no problem on taking a few days between moves. You work for a living, while I'm an unemployed parasite living off my wife (who brings home the big bucks as a part-time University of Oregon Professor).

The rain has started in Oregon, so the fires are just a bad memory. Unfortunately Northern California is exploding with wildfires, which apparently is the "new normal" in this part of the world. I understand Europe is not escaping this phenomenon either!
447 10/17/2017 7:30:00 AM Fall 1863 Confederate Play Strategy card as Operations #69: 3 / Gideon Welles, The Naval Program
The Union player may either increase the Blockade Level by one or increase the Amphibious Assault modifier by two.

Message from Confederate:
Sorry about the delay, Rob. Too much work these days : October is even busier than the summer season this year. I hope Oregon is done with fires now.

That's fate of war...My theory is that everybody's lucky at some point, but if you are not well positioned you don't even notice it. You are well positioned, and things come naturally...But I agree that the opposite battle outcome around Harper's Ferry earlier could have changed things.
Now things are getting exciting !

441 10/9/2017 12:41:00 PM Fall 1863 Union Play Strategy card as Operations #21: 3 / Confederate Overseas Agent
Confederate immediately receives three SPs in any open Blockade Runner Port, no more than one SP per port, but more than one SP per Blockade Zone is permitted. If insufficient ports are available, the excess SPs are lost.

Message from Union:
The two most important rolls of the game have been 6/1 in my favor. I think this game may need a re-roll chit that goes back and forth based upon which side used it last.

438 10/9/2017 10:31:00 AM Fall 1863 Union Message Phil, wasnít that a large battle?
437 10/9/2017 3:03:00 AM Fall 1863 Confederate Play Strategy card as Event #81: 3 / Emancipation Proclamation - Reshuffle/Remove
Either player must play this card as an EC on the Strategy Round immediately following a Union large or medium battle victory. Confederate loses 10 SW and 3 SPs (his choice). Union loses 5 SW. Flip GT marker to its Emancipation Proclamation side. Card must be the last one played by a player at which time it can be played as an OC card. If the play of this card as an OC results in a battle victory, there is no Emancipation Proclamation Remove from deck if event is played. If this card is played as an OC or discarded re-shuffle deck at the end of the Strategy Phase.
