There are still units blocking the road to Luanda.
I played a blank. Brian's turn.
654 7/6/2018 9:15:00 PM Turn 1 FNLA Message That's great news Javi!
653 7/6/2018 6:05:00 PM Turn 1 MPLA Message Hi all!

Very good news. My wife is finally clear of cancel, yay!

On the other hand, regarding the game - nay! The road to Luanda is wide open :(

My column B stays put. Over to Jason :(
652 7/6/2018 2:40:00 PM Turn 1 FNLA Message it was a lucky shot, but I was glad to see it was the only armor asset in that column.
I've learned a lot in this, my first playing of Angola. I would do quite a few things differently but half the time we are mostly reacting to the board situation at a given moment in time. I can see why this game is addictive

651 7/6/2018 8:54:00 AM Turn 1 FAPLA Message I think the phrase "Too little, too late" probably sums up the situation with regard to getting any toys from Cuba that will make a difference.

"Too little" in this case refers to the toys currently available to me. While a "5-dot" artillery unit, or a "3-dot" air unit is nice, it isn't going to stop a large force with a +4 DRM. To do that, I need an equally large force with an equally large DRM, and with the departure of my tank unit, I have no other units that can provide the needed DRM boost.

"Too late" just reflects the fact that there isn't enough time remaining to rebuild and get units where they need to be to stop the onslaught. It takes a turn or two to get units into position where they can be effective. Perhaps Luanda can be defended, since most reinforcements show up there, but that leaves other areas of the board wide open.

The above is not a criticism of the game. It's just a realistic assessment of the current situation. Given the importance of that tank unit, I should have done more to protect it by scrounging up other armored cars and tanks to soak up AT missile shots. That's on me. Lesson learned (the hard way).
650 7/6/2018 6:13:00 AM Turn 1 FNLA Message Hey Brian, I am sure the Cubans will provide some nice toys for you.

649 7/5/2018 10:14:00 PM Turn 1 UNITA Message Way to go, Bob! That AT missile really helped. The city of Luanda is scared now
648 7/5/2018 5:53:00 PM Turn 1 FAPLA Message Well Javi, I think we are officially screwed after that last battle. The dam just broke.

Javi is up.
647 7/4/2018 1:03:00 PM Turn 1 FNLA Message FNLA wins the battle of Lucala as and eliminates 1/3 of the FAPLA forces, in addition to that damn Cuban tank!

634 6/28/2018 4:21:00 PM Turn 1 MPLA Message hi guys!

Everything appears to be sorted out. The new flat is bought, most of the furniture is also bought, my wife is happy for the first time in months, and the doctor said that everything appears to have been removed. We have an appointment next week to confirm, but everything looks good.

I am really sorry for the delay, I've moved.

Column B stays put. Over to Jason
633 6/22/2018 4:38:00 PM Turn 1 FNLA Message Javi, take care of your family. We will be here when you get back. Hoping to hear good news. I don't think I will ever find myself buying a house in Spain but it's good to know I will need Life Ins. to do so!
632 6/22/2018 4:36:00 PM Turn 1 UNITA Message Donít worry about it, Javi, take your time.
631 6/22/2018 4:33:00 PM Turn 1 MPLA Message Hi!

I'm very sorry. My wife has another medical problem and we need to sign the new house we are buying on Monday. For which we need life insurance (a pre-requisite in Spain or a mortage, which is somehow problematic right now). I promise I will have everything sorted out this weekend/Monday and I'll be back at being myself. I am really sorry for this :(

Thanks!
Javi

Javi up
625 6/16/2018 8:36:00 AM Turn 1 FAPLA Message 5th column moves.

As far as the number of files in Dropbox, I can move some of the files to a different folder if that's what you guys want.

I do most of my VASSAL games on a Windows computer, and I generally will create a shortcut to each game I'm playing on my desktop by right-clicking on the appropriate Dropbox folder, and then selecting "Send to...", and then "Desktop". Then I open up that folder by double-clicking on it, and then sort the file list in descending order of "Date Modified" by clicking on the column header with that name. Usually, clicking on the column header once will put it in descending order, and clicking on it a second time will put it in ascending order.

Once that is setup, Windows remembers my preference, and whenever I open up that folder, the most recent file is at the top of the list.

You can do the same thing in VASSAL when you are starting a new log file, and it prompts you for a file name. It brings up a list of the files already in the folder, and if you click on the "Date Modified" column, it will sort the files in descending order. Then you can see what the most recent log file is, and name your new file accordingly.

If you are using a Mac, then you can still do the stuff mentioned above, but unfortunately, Macs apply your sorting preference globally instead of just on the folder in question. In other words, if you sort the list in descending order by Modified Date for a given Dropbox folder, every folder you view from that point forward will also be sorted by Modified Date. Windows allows you to have a different sorting preference for each folder.

Anyway, the tips above are just some things I have found that make playing VASSAL games a little easier. But if you guys prefer a smaller number of files in the Dropbox folder, I can move all but the most recent 10 or 20.

Bob is up.
624 6/15/2018 5:22:00 PM Turn 1 UNITA Message This Dropbox folder is getting hard to navigate, with 339 files
623 6/15/2018 5:21:00 PM Turn 1 UNITA Message Thanks Brian I guess I didnít lose as much as I thought. I uploaded a new log. The start of it was in the middle of the last one. I changed the losses and made a straggler.
622 6/15/2018 4:14:00 PM Turn 1 FNLA Message Yeah, look what that got him
621 6/15/2018 4:09:00 PM Turn 1 FAPLA Message All we are saying is, give peace a chance.

620 6/15/2018 3:32:00 PM Turn 1 FNLA Message I pretty much have to keep attacking now. It's getting desperation time.
619 6/15/2018 3:24:00 PM Turn 1 FAPLA Message Bob, let that be a lesson to you, lest you get any ideas about attacking us up north. :-)

Jason, also remember to pull out a straggler after removing your losses.
618 6/15/2018 3:14:00 PM Turn 1 FNLA Message Well that was a kick in the balls.
617 6/15/2018 2:57:00 PM Turn 1 FAPLA Message Hi Jason,

When the results call for eliminating "half the attackers", I think it means you take the total number of units, and eliminate half of them. A "unit" is any combat unit, so a 1-point infantry, and a 5-point brigade both count equally as a unit for this purpose.

I think you may have eliminated half of the "strength", rather than half the units. I think you had 8 units (two 1-point infantry, two brigades, two artillery, one tank, one armored car), so you will have to choose 4 of those units to eliminate.
616 6/15/2018 2:37:00 PM Turn 1 UNITA Message I eliminated half and retreated the rest

Back to Jason.
607 6/14/2018 9:57:00 AM Turn 1 MPLA Message You can commit 3 from my airgroups :)
606 6/14/2018 9:52:00 AM Turn 1 FAPLA Message Javi,

I suggest we commit a minimum of 3 air groups. One air group to counter Jason's, and the other two air groups to do ground attack. However, I think Jason has a couple of AA missiles, so if he rolls 4 dice, on average we will have two air groups suppressed or eliminated.

On the other hand, even if we had 2 air groups doing ground attack, we would have to get very lucky to inflict enough damage to change the odds of the combat.

I have 4 air groups available, and you have 6 air groups. I propose that I commit one air group, and you commit two air groups. If you want to commit more than two, that's okay as well.

What do you think?
605 6/13/2018 8:37:00 PM Turn 1 FNLA Message yeah, their alliance tends to have interior lines based on where they recruit and where we recruit.
I did see your question but forgot to answer it. Start south into the savannah and then to the area SW of Carmona.
604 6/13/2018 8:30:00 PM Turn 1 UNITA Message Thanks. I wish we two were in more combined battles like they are. Did you read my comments to you 4 logs ago when I took my previous turn?

We know she is gonna get out of this, but until we get a clear "She has no cancer" thing from the last test, we will never be sure.

Thanks, I hope I will not delay myself anymore.

593 6/11/2018 9:18:00 AM Turn 1 FAPLA Message Javi,

It sounds like life is pretty hectic for you right now, and it is my sincere hope that everything settles down soon for you and your family.

If at any time you come to feel like the obligations of this game are adding more stress to an already stressful situation, please let us know. We can always put the game on hold for a while, or even call it quits. It's just a game. No big deal.

Anyway, best wishes for health and happiness.
