133 2/19/2018 9:37:00 PM Turn 1 FAPLA Message I placed the cards on the map in player order, and revealed Bob's card, which was a 3.

Bob is up.
132 2/19/2018 8:08:00 PM Turn 1 UNITA Message My set recruitment used almost all my infantry so I had hardly any left for variable recruitment. I made my bid as well. Back to Brian.
131 2/19/2018 7:03:00 PM Turn 1 MPLA Message Recruitment and bid done.
Over to Jason.
130 2/19/2018 7:20:00 AM Turn 1 FNLA Message Did recruitment and bid.
Over to Javi
129 2/18/2018 7:27:00 PM Turn 1 FAPLA Message I did my Recruitment phase stuff.

I also did my Covert Foreign Aid bid. Here is how I'm proposing that we do our bids now, since the delayed notes don't seem to work.

The basic idea is that we will use our "Column" cards to indicate our bid: Column A = 1, Column B = 2, Column C = 3, Column D = 4. Some of us don't have a "Column E" card (I don't have one), so let's use "5th Column" to indicate a bid of 5.

To make your bid, right-click on the appropriate card in your hand, and select the "Flip" menu item to flip it over. Then drag the card from your hand to the "Opaque cup" window, and drop it in the upper left corner area. I have already done my bid, so you should see my card there already.

Once everyone has made their bid, we can pull the cards out of the opaque cup, and flip them over to see what everyone bid, and implement the result accordingly.

Note that the above procedure does not prevent players from viewing the bids of the other players who have already placed their cards in the opaque cup if they were so inclined. It's still an honor system, but this process at least requires players to do something in the VASSAL module to indicate their bid, and would require a player to go out of his way to view other player's bids.

Anyway, give it a try and we'll see how it goes.

Bob is up.
128 2/18/2018 6:38:00 PM Turn 1 UNITA Message You are right of course. Only the factions that are losing. I did my direct foreign aid and reorg. Over to Brian

126 2/18/2018 5:09:00 PM Turn 1 FAPLA Message I think that is correct. Only the factions that "lost" this turn can get direct aid.
125 2/18/2018 5:05:00 PM Turn 1 MPLA Message I'm sick so excuse me if I say something stupid, but I though that Direct Aid was only for factions that lose the turn. Am I wrong?
124 2/18/2018 4:47:00 PM Turn 1 UNITA Message Javi did you get 1 Minor unit as direct foreign aid for your 5 victory tokens?
123 2/18/2018 4:20:00 PM Turn 1 MPLA Message Over to Jason.

New file uploaded. A ton of apologies for previous error.
122 2/18/2018 2:16:00 PM Turn 1 MPLA Message Thanks, I'll redo my move in 1 or 2 hours (bathing my son right now, sorry)
121 2/18/2018 1:51:00 PM Turn 1 UNITA Message Javi, I tried to do what you did with Column A during last turn's reorg, but they told me I couldn't. See Rule 8.1 section 3.
120 2/18/2018 1:05:00 PM Turn 1 MPLA Message Over to Jason.

112 2/17/2018 1:53:00 PM Turn 1 FAPLA Message Good catch, Jason. I was thinking that a captured town/city always went face down, but I see now that is not the case. Good to know!

Thanks.
111 2/17/2018 10:47:00 AM Turn 1 UNITA Message Brian you flipped the marker I just got to its face down side. This is what the rules say:

10.2 Uncontrolled Towns and Cities. A player takes control of one of the five uncontrolled towns or
cities (i.e., a town or city whose Control Marker is on the map) when one of his Forces ends its movement or retreat in the region with the town or city (just moving through is not enough).
The player now takes the Control Marker from the map and places it face up amongst his own Control Markers.
110 2/17/2018 10:39:00 AM Turn 1 MPLA Message Activated column A for stupid movement. No combat.

109 2/17/2018 10:25:00 AM Turn 1 FNLA Message Activated column A for a move. No combat. Over to Javi

Javi, you still need to add an infantry unit to Cabinda. During my recruitment phase, I placed 2 FAPLA infantry in Luanda and 1 MPLA infantry in Cabinda, but I don't have access to MPLA forces, so you will need to add it on your next turn.

83 2/8/2018 8:39:00 AM Turn 1 FAPLA Message It looks like the delayed notes are completely screwed up. I added another log file in which I revealed my secret bid of 4, and then when I opened the log file I just created, and looked at my "revealed" secret bid, it says "message not revealed".

So I can't even view my own revealed delayed note.

We'll just go with the honor system. When it's your turn, state what your bid was, and then draw your cards, etc.
82 2/7/2018 7:07:00 PM Turn 1 MPLA Message hi!

Is the button Reveal working for you? To me it appears grey and I can not really reveal it :(

Thanks for the help!
81 2/7/2018 6:20:00 PM Turn 1 FAPLA Message I have entered my secret bid, and now all players have entered their bids.

Javi is first player, so he will reveal his bid, draw his reinforcement cards, and deploy the resulting units.
80 2/7/2018 5:37:00 PM Turn 1 UNITA Message I entered my bid. Over to Brian

75 2/4/2018 5:25:00 PM Turn 1 MPLA Message Go Patriots!

(I worked in Boston for some time, so this is kind of mandatory for me ;))
74 2/4/2018 5:17:00 PM Turn 1 FNLA Message Probably won't get to my turn tonight, with the SuperBowl and all. Will do it tomorrow.
73 2/4/2018 12:04:00 PM Turn 1 FAPLA Message Completed my recruitment.
Once Bob completes his recruitment, we will all need to bid for Covert Foreign Aid. My suggestion for how to do this is to use the "Delayed Note" feature in VASSAL as follows:

1. Click on the "Notes" button in the toolbar.

2. Click on the "Delayed" tab in the resulting window.

3. Click the "New" button to begin entering a new delayed note.

4. Enter a title for the note like "Turn 1 Secret Bid". You don't need to put your faction name in the title because when you save the note, it will show which faction owns it.

5. Enter your bid in the "Text" area of the note.

6. Click the "OK" button.

7. Click the "Save" button. This is very important. Your note will show up in the list of notes when you click "OK", but until you click "Save", the note doesn't really exist.

In the future, I think we could combine recruitment and entering our bids to save time. I can't think of any reason why this would be a problem.

Once everyone has entered their bids, then each player can reveal their bids by opening up the "Notes" window, selecting their note in the list, click the "Reveal" button, and then once again clicking the "Save" button so everyone can see their bid. Then they can the appropriate number of Reinforcement cards.

Bob is up next. I think you can do both your recruitment, and enter you bid.

72 2/3/2018 6:27:00 PM Turn 1 UNITA Message I put 4 inf units as set recruitment and 2 as variable recruitment. Over to Brian.
71 2/3/2018 3:12:00 PM Turn 1 MPLA Message Over to Jason.

No set recruitment for me :(, but I got 3 infantries as variable recruitment.
70 2/3/2018 1:28:00 PM Turn 1 FAPLA Message It looks like we are ready for the Recruitment phase.

According to the rules under 12.3, the "First" player (i.e., Javi) does his "Set" recruitment (12.3.1) and "Variable" recruitment (12.3.2) first, including the deployment of those recruits, then the other players do likewise in clockwise order.

So, Javi is up next.

64 2/2/2018 9:54:00 PM Turn 1 FAPLA Message Hi Jason,

I could be mistaken, but I don't think you can move a Column marker from one stack to another during the Reorganization phase.

You can combine multiple Columns that occupy the same area into one Column, which then frees up one or more Column markers for use elsewhere.

Or you can create a new Column using an off-map marker (which may have been one that was just freed up from combining columns).

I think the only way to move a Column marker from one stack to another is through the use of a Command card.

I could be wrong, but that's the way I read it.
63 2/2/2018 5:34:00 PM Turn 1 UNITA Message I donít want to form inf brigades but I did move a column marker from one stack to another. Over to Brian
62 2/2/2018 4:54:00 PM Turn 1 MPLA Message Over to Jason.

I've done Step A of end turn (Victory Markers, etc). Now we are in Step B, where we can reorganize our columns and form infantry brigades. I've done so, and now Jason can proceed to do the same if he wish :)

Please use the standard 024- file to play, the other one is only to show the column :)

THANKS and apologies,

51 1/28/2018 10:22:00 AM Turn 1 UNITA Message Javier, your attacking units were face down the whole battle. Are you sure you revealed them? Not that we don't trust you. I will take my turn after church.

I'll try to not forget to add a note saying who is next. It's very easy to miss if we don't do it. Sorry.
43 1/27/2018 10:32:00 AM Turn 1 FAPLA Message Hi Bob,

Yes, you would receive a victory marker from the MPLA player for capturing one of his towns. I will move that over to your area when I do my turn.

42 1/27/2018 9:38:00 AM Turn 1 FNLA Message Question, When I took Javi's town I grabbed the town chit. Should I also have taken one of his victory chits?

40 1/26/2018 9:54:00 PM Turn 1 UNITA Message My next card was blank, so that's what I played. Brian is up.

36 1/23/2018 4:41:00 PM Turn 1 MPLA Message So I played my first card, which was column B. It has gone in front of column C from UNITA. I also took oportunity and put all my columns as blanks - thanks for the tip, Brian.

Strategically speaking, I do not know if my plan is the best, but this is a learning game, after all :)

File uploaded, Jason next.
35 1/23/2018 2:01:00 AM Turn 1 MPLA Message Thanks Brian! I'll make my move after work today
34 1/22/2018 9:55:00 PM Turn 1 FAPLA Message You are correct. Units under a column marker should only be visible to the owner.

At first, I didn't think that the VASSAL module supported the ability to hide the identity of units beneath a column marker, but I did some experimenting, and found that it actually does.

First, if you hover your mouse over a stack with a column marker, you will see that the contents of the stack are displayed (units are not hidden).

Now, select a stack you own with a column marker on top by left-clicking on it. Then right-click on the stack, and there should be a menu item called "Blank". When you click that item, the column marker remains visible, but if you then hover your mouse over the stack, the units underneath just display as blank counters.

However, if you double-click the stack, it will expand the stack so that you can then click on individual units within the stack. As you click on a unit under the column marker, it comes to the forefront, and you will note that the unit is fully visible (i.e., it is no longer blank). If you double-click the stack again, the stack collapses back down again.

Also, if you go to the top tool bar and click the "Retire" button, a small window opens up, and then click the "Become observer" button. When you do this, you are no longer signed in as whatever faction you owned, and all the toolbar buttons associated with your faction become inactive (i.e., "FAPLA Forces", "FAPLA Deck", and "FAPLA Pack", in my case).

Now try viewing the units that you "Blanked" out in the previous steps. You'll see that whether you hover over the stack, or select individual units, you only see a "Blank" counter.

You can click on the "Retire" button again, and then click the "Join another side" button, and then pick your faction from the list. This will make you the owner of that faction again, and then you will once again be able to see the "Blanked" units when you select them.

Hopefully, that all made some sense. Play around with it on your own and let me know if you run into any problems.
