OK this is how it plays out and it is interesting. First note that the British TER of 4 is good and the German TER of 2 is poor so if they were to come to blows the Britsh Cavalry would be more resilient.

a. The British unit could retreat before combat (BBook 11.3) if it wasn't surrounded by Zocs. But it is.

b. The river is ignored. If all units are attacking across river hexsides the defender's strength is +1. So in this case the British unit would be a 2-4 in terms of strength, but would only have one step to lose.

c. ... but due to 11.2 (BBook) British Cavalry are infantry for defence in combat. That means (14.2 MainRules) the attack doesn't happen because Cavalry can't attack Infantry. This attack doesn't happen.

Top roll for French repl Cav forming in Lille. Three German 2-4s have it surrounded. As it is Cav attacked by Inf it has a TER of 1 so will be eliminated on anything BUT a 1.

Bottom roll is for the German 2-4 in 4207. The Germans have 6:1 odds, but then have a 1L shift for Lille being a city. At 5:1 the Attacker Loss Limit is 1, so only one German unit has to roll to check losses. I chose this as it is the furthest back from Allied units. The -3/+3 at 5:1 means that with a TER of 4 and a -3 modifier the unit will only take a loss on a natural 6.

First die: defending French Cav in 4012. Its starting TER is 2, but at 4:1 the -3/+3 means that its TER is going to be reduced. It won't actually become 2 - 3 = -1 as the floor TER is 1. Therefore any roll above 1 will eliminate this unit as it is a one stepper.

Second die: one of the Ger 1-2s in 4011. Both of these will be rolling. I have not chosen the two in 3911 as two units stacked together are a better defence against the other French Cavalry that are still to move in zone b. It has a weak TER of 2, but the -3/+3 boosts it to 5, so it will only take a loss (and be eliminated on a 6.

Third die: the other Ger Cav in 4011, same as above: dead on 6.

This is how I am rolling it out and the rationale.

First I am going to take the 4 German Cavalry against the French one in 4012. This has 4-1 odds. That is the magic ratio where only an unmodified 6 can cause attacker losses if the unit has a 2 TER.

Second I'll do the two Ger Inf against the French Cav in 4212. These are good units with 2 steps and a TER of 4. The DRMs will mean that again they are only susceptible to loss on a 6.

Note that later in the middle game these sort of odds won't be so easy to achieve.
