454 11/22/2018 12:35:00 PM 361-348 BC Gaul Message Virgin Queen: I'll make getting my head around this in these dark months. I'll probably have to set it up and play a couple of rounds of cards and then investigate the Vassal module. It looks like HIS moved on a little with simplified religious conflicts. The current Stan Smith HIS game seems to be about to end, so I will have a multi-player game void to fill.

I'll reinstate my CSW blog before long and post about VQ there.

Thanks for the SoR games everyone. I'll return to this game at some point, but there are some other games I want to play before that.
453 11/22/2018 12:30:00 PM 361-348 BC Gaul Message Once the SOR combat system settled down (it seemed to go through adjustments as to quite how losses were apportioned) I moved to the mindset of "anything can come out of this" is going into battle with reasonably matched forces. My mind also goes back to playing Imperium Romanum long ago, where a game took ages to reach a decisive point and we had a battle roll that just didn't seem to justify all the effort up to that point.

I like the asymmetry of the SOR powers.
452 11/21/2018 6:00:00 AM 361-348 BC Roman Message Thanks everyone for the games. I like SoR a lot, though I find the chaotic combat system frustrating at times.
451 11/21/2018 5:28:00 AM 361-348 BC Greek Message Paul, I've seen HIS and VQ both played at WBC - I hesitate to suggest I would be interested in learning it as I don't want to slow down the rest of you but perhaps someday I'd like to play a learning game of either of them. Yes , thanks all again for the SOR game - interesting dynamic.
450 11/21/2018 3:34:00 AM 361-348 BC Etruscan-Samnite Message Thank you for giving me opportunity to play this game finally.

Paul, I have the same with VQ as you. So far it acts as dust collector on my shelf only as I've never had chance to play it. But I'd like to play it very much. So please count me in if you think about starting VQ game.
449 11/21/2018 1:57:00 AM 361-348 BC Gaul Message Well thanks for the games. I'll delete this on Friday and take the Dropbox offline then too.

Further down the line, I'd like to play Virgin Queen one day. Szczepan and I are in our second game of Here I Stand together and I've played that multiple times and pretty much know what I am doing. VQ went on the shelf when it arrived and ought to have a play. I see that GMT are considering another printing.
448 11/19/2018 3:01:00 PM 361-348 BC Gaul Message The Samnites are very hard to crack. The Etruscans can hae a hard time if the Romans and the Gauls team p against them.

When I have played the Greeks, the dilemma over removing leaders is frustrating. If you leave them on the board, you have to spend cards building up support. If you remove them you have probably blunted your attacks.
447 11/19/2018 4:19:00 AM 361-348 BC Etruscan-Samnite Message From my side I can say that although E-S seem to be in weak position, in a kind of snare between military oriented powers, they have pretty strong events in cards which let them keep aggressors on distance. And Samnites are hard to crack, with their rough territory and handful of good combat cards.
The game seems to be well balanced, every side has strengths and is interesting to play. But at the same time if somebody attacks too early and is stricken by sequence of bad luck events/rolls, it is very difficult to recover and catch up with leaders.

446 11/18/2018 7:07:00 AM 361-348 BC Greek Message Yes - done -
Besides screwing up my move every other turn, I found
the Romans much easier to play than the Greeks who were
spread out between two portions of board and also that rule about removing influence vs leaders is a killer unless you get a lot of territory early or just keep taking leaders off the board.
445 11/18/2018 1:05:00 AM 361-348 BC Gaul Message Playing the Gauls: the last face to face game I played saw the Gauls get on a roll and expand south while coping with TG forays. I just couldn't get things rolling in this game and probably tried to cover too many bases defensively.
444 11/18/2018 1:03:00 AM 361-348 BC Gaul Message Bob sent me an message via email that he agrees to a game end. He might add a comment here? I think it is best to wrap this up and give Szczepan the win. I can see that he might not get the required 2VPs at the end of the next game year, but if things stay as they are he will. The alternative is probably a long slow grind to see whether the E-s or Greeks finally come out on top. Let's chalk this up to experience.
443 11/16/2018 2:51:00 PM 361-348 BC Etruscan-Samnite Message I don't want to insist on playing just because I'm leading. And objectevily foundations of my position is not that strong and it's likely that I would quickly go down on VP track in coming rounds.
But I leave the dcision to you.

442 11/16/2018 11:02:00 AM 361-348 BC Roman Message Probably unsurprisingly, I'm ok with a capitulation to the mighty Etruscans and their Samnite allies, who will doubtless go forward to remake an ancient world in which the Romans and Latin will be an archaeological footnote.

OTOH, I will also continue to play if Szczepan and Bob wish to go forward. However I don't think the game will last more than one more turn without a complete reversal of fortune for E/S.
441 11/15/2018 5:47:00 PM 361-348 BC Gaul Message File sent. Please check.

Given the dire position of the Romans and Gauls and the Etruscan-Samnites 1VP short of winning this turn and 2VP short of an automatic victory, I am happy to concede a win to Szczepan with Bob 2nd. Let me know whether you want to continue. If we continue it is End/Renew Alliances next.
440 11/15/2018 5:37:00 PM 361-348 BC Gaul Adjust Victory Points Roman: from 3 to 0
Greek: from 7 to 6
Etruscan-Samnite: from 8 to 10
Gaul: from 4 to 3
439 11/15/2018 5:36:00 PM 361-348 BC Gaul Message Scoring:

Romans were on 3VP. -3 for not holding Narnia, Praeneste and Capua = 0VP

Gauls were on 4VP. -1 for not holding Eporedia =3VP.

Greeks were on 7VP. -2 for not holding Messana and Syracusae, +1 for Capua =6VP.

Etruscans-Samnites were on 8VP. +2 for Praeneste and Narnia = 10VP.
438 11/15/2018 5:29:00 PM 361-348 BC Gaul Message Surrender phase: Praeneste can go Etruscan (have done thos, E-S can undo it if they choose). Then nothing else possible, given that Messana loss to attrition.

Isolation: nothing I can see.

425 11/12/2018 12:10:00 PM 361-348 BC Gaul Message You are done. We have had the five rounds. Desperate times cards insert themselves into those, or are playable at the end of the five rounds.

Players other than the Gauls can hold cards through to the next turn or can discard at the appropriate step.
424 11/12/2018 7:53:00 AM 361-348 BC Greek Message I still have one more card - Can I play that one
or am I done for the turn?
423 11/12/2018 6:49:00 AM 361-348 BC Roman Message Carthage goes into the city walls.
422 11/12/2018 6:21:00 AM 361-348 BC Greek Play Desperate Times card Use as OPS 3Message from Greek:
I'll play one -
A Greek leader, any subordinates stacked with him, and up to 3
CU, or up to 6 CU if sailing to or from Syracusae, when moving with a 3 value card.

So 3 CU with leader move to assault/siege Messana

Does carthage fight or go under the city walls?
421 11/12/2018 3:48:00 AM 361-348 BC Gaul Message That's all the rounds done. The opportunity to play a Desperate Times is still there, otherwise we move on to the final phases of the turn.

I won't be playing a DT, but perhaps should have to help retake Eporedia a couple of rounds ago.

I also lose a CU

That is end of cards for me so getting towards end of turn.

I will have to do this during my reinforcement phase:

8.2.3 Greek Leader Loyalty Penalty

total loyalty of Greek walled cities by the amount shown in a red

416 11/8/2018 6:05:00 PM 361-348 BC Roman Message Thanks for saying that Bob, and please excuse my outburst. I should have said something sooner, at least.

Sieges are always walled cities, subjugations are the hex shaped tribal markers only, and the mechanics for both are almost identical (i.e. leader, +3CU must be present at start, takes the whole activation).

Since E/S has passed you are up.

Message from Gaul:
Not playing for event, but the card text is this.

>Play after an attacking Gallic army wins a battle against an enemy army of equal or greater size. Place marker on defeated army. The defeated army may not enter spaces containing enemy CU, siege, or subjugate while marked. Marker is removed when army enters a controlled home VP space.

Play for political support. Convert Genua back to Gallic. Thatís all I can do as I didnít get back into Eporedia.
413 11/8/2018 6:04:00 AM 361-348 BC Greek Message >In this case, you can't move guys around and then conduct siege.

First sorry for the continued confusion -
I had just read that if no troops and 'brown/neutral' forces it was a subjugation not a siege so without troops in the 'city' I didn't thing I was besieging

- I also beg forgiveness as I'm playing a lot of Hannibal and it that game you DO MOVE and siege/subjugate all in the same turn/movement .

Last thing I want to do is make it unpleasant for other players
412 11/7/2018 8:49:00 PM 361-348 BC Roman Play Strategy card - Operations #35: 3 / Carthage Signs Treaty

Message from Roman:
Place 1 CU in Rome
411 11/7/2018 6:45:00 AM 361-348 BC Roman Message Bob, what is happening? We are now three turns into our second game and almost every time it's your turn we have to correct what you are attempting to do, especially if it concerns sieges or support.

In this case, you can't move guys around and then conduct siege. The rules are pretty clear that to roll on the siege table you have to start with your leader plus at least 3 CU outside the city, and then activating the leader allows you a roll. This isn't the first time we've been over this.

I find this sort of thing aggravating, more than I probably should. I've been wanting to ditch this game for some time now, but that would be pretty rude on my part, plus since I'm getting beaten like a drum it would just seem to be sour grapes. So, in fairness to the other players, let's finish this game. But please make some attempt to learn the rules, or at least refer to them before you move.

I will take my turn later, I need to get ready for work. When it is my turn I will restore the CU you lost by rolling on the table illegally.

Message from Greek:
Move unit in Catina to Syracuse
386 10/24/2018 11:33:00 AM 361-348 BC Gaul Message Syracuse is independent. If you move there with 1CU you are outside the city and, as you say, if you don't have the 3CU you can't besiege it.

7.3.4 bullet two gives you a way of taking it back. If you win a battle against anyone you can 'replace an independent city in a home space free of enemy CU
with a loyalty 1 city'.

Another option is to get a force of 3CU or more to Syracuse. 9.6.3 bullet 2 is a way of doing that.

385 10/23/2018 8:21:00 PM 361-348 BC Greek Message Okay, I can't find this in the rules.

IF I wanted to move from Catina to Syracuse
I of course can but can I then on another turn
FLIP the neutral marker to Greek?

I am not really "attacking" the neutral force am I?
If that was the case I would need 3 CU to seige/take
the city first.

The rules keep saying enemy this and enemy that
but a neutral is considered an ENEMY?

Didn't see that one.
378 10/18/2018 2:08:00 AM 361-348 BC Gaul Message You can place 'that' Alexander but not at Catina. The closest you can get him to the Carthaginian threat is Rhegium (across the strait). The placement needs to be able to trace to Tarentum or Neapolis, your reinforcement spaces.

of enemy CU and can trace a path of connected friendly spaces
free of enemy CU to any unbesieged home reinforcement space
that the power controls.

366 10/14/2018 5:03:00 AM 361-348 BC Gaul Play Strategy card - Operations #22: 2 / Neutral Power Activates

Message from Gaul:
Play to activate Brennus and his 7CU force in Bononia. He has 4MP.

MP1 is to Faesulae where Etruscan Leader B can intercept with some or all of his 7CU from Pisae. Iíll roll and, if successful, Szczepan can take the interception if he wishes. Etruscans need a 1-2 roll to succeed.

361 10/13/2018 2:24:00 AM 361-348 BC Gaul Message Resolving Messana.

Greeks had 4:3 superiority which gives a +1 to their rolls. Carthaginians had 3:1 leader advantage so +2 to them. Carthaginians get another +1 for being in a friendly controlled space.

Greek modified rolls total 12. Carthaginians get 14. Carthage wins.

Carthaginans have 2 losses (down to just 1CU though) and hold the city. Greeks have 3 losses (down to 1CU as well) and fall back to Catina.

Carthage get 2 support, placed by Gary.

If you have ever wondered what is beyond the Transalpine Gauls, it's a Seven Years War alternative world.

Gary is experiencing a hurricane. I have old relatives a little more around the coast of Florida to him.
