43 12/1/2018 2:28:00 PM 1620-1621 Protestant Message Barry, Iím out of town through next Wednesday night and donít have access to the game board while I am away, so I will habve to make my move then.

42 11/27/2018 5:12:00 PM 1620-1621 Catholic Play Strategy card as Event #5: 3 / Spain Declares War With England
-2 to all English AP totals.

Message from Catholic:
i will play this as an event
41 11/13/2018 11:52:00 PM 1620-1621 Protestant Message We'd both gotten a bit behind in minding the Turn Record and VP Track on the map. The last impulse was the Protestant 4th, to be followed by your fourth. The VPs now stand at 19.

40 11/13/2018 11:51:00 PM 1620-1621 Protestant Change Victory Points -1: from 20 to 19
39 11/13/2018 11:36:00 PM 1620-1621 Protestant Play Strategy card as Event #7: 3 / Denmark Enters War
Deploy Christian and 4 Danish Mercenaries in Denmark.

Message from Protestant:
I'll play this for the event. Christian of Denmark and the 4 Danish Merc units are placed on the Danish flag. Schleswig-Holstein converts to the Protestant cause (the presence of a foreign army concentrates the mind wonderfully!). -1 VP for the Protestants.
38 11/9/2018 4:36:00 PM 1620-1621 Catholic Play Strategy card as Event #8: 1 / New Leaders
Charles of Loraine, Gallas. Place with any Imperial units.

Message from Catholic:
Charles will Join Bucquoy
37 10/21/2018 11:35:00 AM 1620-1621 Protestant Change Victory Points -3: from 23 to 20
36 10/21/2018 11:35:00 AM 1620-1621 Protestant Message . . . but then decline by 3 as a result of Saxony's joining the Protestant cause.

35 10/21/2018 11:35:00 AM 1620-1621 Protestant Message Catholic VPs increase by two for suppressing the Hungarian Revolt . . .
34 10/21/2018 11:34:00 AM 1620-1621 Protestant Change Victory Points +2: from 21 to 23
33 10/21/2018 11:34:00 AM 1620-1621 Protestant Message The assault is successful; the Saxon garrison is overwhelmed, and John George is taken into custody, which he will serve at his castle in Torgau. The Protestants take no losses, suggesting a lack of enthusiasm among the Saxon rank-and-file for their monarch's support for the Imperial/Catholic cause.

I will prepare a move file covering your move, the Battle of Pressburg, and my move.

I will assume that you would have reduced two Vets to cover the Imperial Army's losses at Pressburg, so I will simply reduce 1 Vet and leave your 3-3-6 Merc as is, although between us we will know going forward that it's really an u/s Vet.

Siege Assault on Leipzig:

31 10/21/2018 11:28:00 AM 1620-1621 Protestant Play Strategy card as Operations #3: 2 / New Leader
Deploy Christian of Brunswick and 3 Protestant Militia in Brunswick-Luneberg. Brunswick-Luneberg enters game as Protestant area.

Message from Protestant:
I'll play this to activate Mansfeld, who will takre one Merc and move as follows:

MP 1-2: Lutzen; convert to Protestant.

MP 3: Back to the siege lines outside Leipzig.

MP 4-5: Continue with the same Merc to Torgau; convert that. Saxony as a whole is now converted to the Protestant cause.

MP 6: Return to Leipzig, followed by siege assault on Leipzig.

30 10/17/2018 11:22:00 PM 1620-1621 Protestant Message But Bethlen Gabor is killed in the combat! Otherwise, because each side inflicted 6 Loss Factors (LFs) on the other, the victory goes to the defender, and the Hungarians were victorious. The Imperials will have to remove two steps from among their 4 Veteran units, while the Hungarians would have eliminated one f/s Militia unit and the 1 u/s militia unit, leaving them with 6 CFs.

Unfortunately, for the Hungarians, this is a Pyrrhic victory. For without their charismatic leader, the Hungarian army disperses to their homes! Rule 17.H.5(1). The Hungarian revolt ends, and Catholic control markers are placed on all Hungarian cities. And +2 VPs for the Catholic player.

I think the Catholics still count as the losers, the way I read Rule 12.28 and the italicized text note right in front of it, and thus must retreat back to Vienna. Presumably, the Hungarian army dissolves and disperses only following the battle, as the impact of Bethlen's death fully takes hold.

You still have to remove two steps from your Veterans, which you can do by either eliminating one unit in its entirety or reducing two. Let me know which it will be.

The Battle of Pressburg:

27 10/17/2018 11:02:00 PM 1620-1621 Protestant Play Strategy card as Combat #12: 1 / Surprise Attack
+1 to Protestant combat die roll.

Message from Protestant:
Actually, on second thought, being back and sizing up the combat, I will play a Combat Card.

The Hungarians launch a spoiling attack with cavalry against the approaching Imperial column.

26 10/14/2018 1:10:00 PM 1620-1621 Protestant Message No combat card. I donít have access to the game while away, so you may go ahead and resolve.

25 10/12/2018 1:33:00 PM 1620-1621 Catholic Play Strategy card as Operations #4: 2 / Spinola Besieges Breda
Spinola Recalled to Netherlands card must have been played previously. Must be first Catholic card play of turn if played as Event. +1 to Dutch War Track. If no Protestant army enters United Provinces this turn, +1 to Dutch War Track at end of turn.

Message from Catholic:
activate Bucquay and his mob to attack hungarians in pressberg
24 9/29/2018 12:11:00 PM 1620-1621 Protestant Message So I'll use the same card to activate Mansfeld, who will move as follows.

MP 1: Mansfeld moves alone to Budweis.

MP 2: He picks up the 2 leaders and 5 units there, and returns with them to Pilsen, where he drops them off.

MP 3: He moves with an army of 7 Mercs to Prague.

MP 4-5: He moves with all 7 Mercs to Dresden, where he overruns and eliminates the Saxon Militia unit there, and converts the city. Place a P1 marker.

MP 6: He moves with his army to Torgau. Place a P1 marker.

MP 7: He moves with his entire force of 7 Mercs to Leipzig. [Leaders have a movement allowance of 8, per Rule 10.12.]

You have the option to fight or withdraw inside the fortress.

23 9/29/2018 1:26:00 AM 1620-1621 Protestant Message Actually, after refreshing my memory about how the retreat rules work in this game, I would like reconsider that move, because the rules will not allow me to retreat to Znaim or Graz if I should lose a battle at Vienna.

Accordingly, if you have no objection, I would like to redo that move.

22 9/29/2018 12:28:00 AM 1620-1621 Protestant Message Then that is the end of the move. I can mask Vienna, but not besiege it. Move file to come.

21 9/28/2018 3:39:00 PM 1620-1621 Catholic Message I will retreat into fortress
20 9/26/2018 11:50:00 PM 1620-1621 Protestant Play Strategy card as Operations #4: 2 / New Leader
Deploy Frederick of Baden and 2 Protestant Militia in Baden. Baden enters game as Protestant area.

Message from Protestant:
I'll play this to activate Mansfeld, who will move with Anhalt and his 6 Mercs as follows:

MP 1: Budweis; pick up 1 Merc.

MP 2: Linz.

MP 3: Convert Linz to Protestant (easy to do, as historically there were lots of Protestants in upper Austria).

MP 4: Passau; pillage the area thoroughly (place P2 marker).

MP 5: Back to Linz.

MP 6: Advance with entire force upon Vienna.

Please advise whether you will stand and fight, or retreat within the fortifications.

11 9/23/2018 7:03:00 PM 1620-1621 Catholic Message sorry for delay. imho, this game is much more involved than POG, or some of the others
10 9/18/2018 11:47:00 PM 1620-1621 Protestant Message Hard not to be satisfied with that.

The results are:

Mansfeld - 2 steps Mercs
Thurn - 2 steps Mercs
BG - 3 steps Mils

I'll take f/s Mercs with Mansfeld and Thurn, and 1 f/s Mil and 1 u/s Mil with BG. A move file will come by email. I'll also add an Imperial Merc for you at Vienna, which we can treat as your 4th Veteran.

Val Telline Passes must be Open to play this event. Duke of Savoy closes Val Telline passes. No Spanish Aid to Catholic player until Val Telline Passes Open Card is played.

Message from Protestant:
My apologies for the delay, Barry. I had several sentencing briefs and then hearings to do in a long-running case.

I'll play this card to recruit. Mansfeld in Pilsen twice for Mercs, and Bethlen Gabor in Pressburg for Militia.

6 8/7/2018 9:39:00 PM 1620-1621 Protestant Change Protestant player Protestant player changed from Jefferson Gray to Jefferson Gray
5 8/1/2018 10:11:00 PM 1620-1621 Protestant Message I should note one thing with regard to Rule 19.7, the "Tilly as Dynamic Leader" optional rule. It allows you to stack Bavarian and Imperial units together in the early going, but only at the cost of keeping Wallenstein out of the game. So there's a trade-off there for the Catholic player. Once you bring in Wallenstein, then Imperial and Bavarian troops can't stack together again until the "Elector Maximilian" card is played.

4 8/1/2018 7:25:00 PM 1620-1621 Protestant Message We need to determine which optional rules to use. I suggest the following:

19.1 (Victory Determination)

19.2a (Stronger Imperial Set-up) ((use a Merc unit to represent the additional Imperial Vet @ Wien)

19.2b (New French Leader Guebriant)

19.3 (LOC established during Action Phase)

19.6 (Wallenstein's Ambition)

19.7 (Tilly as Dynamic Leader)

19.9 (Old Corps French Infantry Regiments)

19.10 (Richelieu Becomes Chief Minister of France)

19.11 (Wallenstein's Enemies)

Let me know if you have any questions about these.
