118 9/3/2018 6:25:00 AM Fall 1861 Confederate Message You should pick the sides. I only suggested that at some point I could play US to show what I mean about defending DC. I am happy to play CSA more.
117 9/3/2018 1:44:00 AM Fall 1861 Union Message Congratulations to your Victory.

KY I forgot when planning the Campaign. Yes the dysentry trap in Baltimore did its purpose. But on the other hand, without reacting in the east you could have got at least one raid. The defence with 3 SP each was too weak to stop the ANV after a first victory. Finally the position in the east could be recovered with the new reinforcements if I would have had just som SW left.

It was fun again and if you`re not bored about easy winnings I would be glad to continue to play. You said you would also like play the US. I let you to choose. I think I`ve learned enough to give a better US defense next time, but we can als switch sides. This should improve my next US defence too... (Don`t know if we get so far, against Grant I`m really defenceless)
116 9/2/2018 3:43:00 PM Fall 1861 Confederate Message US SW 49- -5 for WW n49-

So US SW is doubled up, CSA win

The US has many things they need to watch! I'm happy to play some more. Just let me know.

You have probably realized by now that much of this game is about taking the initiative from your opponent by creating threats to which he must react. But in order to do this, one must first ensure that one's defenses are solid enough to prevent the enemy from sneaking in to create a threat of his own. And, of course, if you misjudge the game, your threats will not be credible! I was already focused on Kentucky when you played your campaign. My play of Disentry on Baltimore was just to make you think I was still looking to attack there. Will note that I also could have doubled US SW by taking WVA, which I could have done with Van Dorn, but he would have had to win a small battle in Wytheville.

Your attacks on the CSA coast are a problem for you because you perform them at the expense of your defense against more immediate threats against yourself. In a strange way, I am powerless to stop you from closing off the blockade zones, so I don't even try. Instead, I refocus on attacking where you have left yourself weak. If my attacks cause you more immediate pain that your attacks against me, I will win. The US naval game is mostly a long game, so if you pursue it at the expense of your short term defense, you court disaster.

112 9/2/2018 3:19:00 PM Fall 1861 Confederate Message Pope's move is legal in terms of where he started, what he did, and where he wound up, but your notation was not quite right--so I had to work it out. You should probably start noting your moves the way I do, listing each space moved into specifically--especially if you start playing in tournaments.
111 9/2/2018 12:44:00 PM Fall 1861 Union Message looked in the rulebook, you need to have SW greater than twice the Union SW. Maybe the fight goes on: I`m looking forward to your move.

105 9/2/2018 10:48:00 AM Fall 1861 Confederate Message That should have been played as an event--I don't think it matters.

With the Union early on it is a balance. The primary goal is to define Washington. You need to have at least 4, usually 6 SPs on the invasion routes--Harpers Ferry and (ideally) Manassas, then Frederick. Forts in these places along with a 1-1 leader are good. Put Mac uncharge of an army, he will intercept on a 1-4 when the cavalry arrives. An army of at least 6SPs in DC. Also a 6SPs in Pittsburgh under Burnside or Pope to a) defend and b) threaten to cut ANV supply if possible. If you add it up that is 24 SPs defending DC and the Northeast. But it should not be a passive defense--you must attack if possible to attrit or cut supply lines. If you do this well enough, you will invite a CSA attack in the West, usually from Louisville.

And if you have all this in place *then* you can think about the naval game. Also Pope and Burnside can be best used as corps commanders to make attacks on CSA corps or to raid behind CSA lines. They are, I think, less effective as army commanders, although I have seen people play this way. I'd be happy to play the US at some point if you wish.

103 9/2/2018 10:19:00 AM Fall 1861 Union Message one thing I really don`t get. You said I`v been to passive i hte east. But most times the ANV would have intercepted any move and otherwise the drm for any offensive action been too low. So what should I have done different?
102 9/2/2018 10:13:00 AM Fall 1861 Union Message I just read your post on BGG. It was very intersting to read your view on the game, there were some new thinks to think about even I played I this game too.
I`ve been to commited to attrit from the sea, as you mentioned, and as I`ve been this game too.
My idea to attrit with the AoP was futile as I lost 4 Sp to the cutoff, without them I would consider this strategy as totally desastrous.
What some minor errors you meant? And how with Poipe or Burnside I could hae been more dangerous?
101 9/2/2018 9:39:00 AM Fall 1861 Union Play Strategy card as Operations #8: 1 / 3 Cigars
Play this card to make an automatic one or two space interception. Intervening space must be friendly controlled and free of enemy SPs. The intervening space may be the one just exited by the moving enemy force. No Generals or SPs may be picked up or dropped off during intercept.

Message from Union:

T1 I would play different now, but Mark Hermann wrote that you should never underplay trhe Naval Games as the US. Also I except trying go for Manassas I had no idea what to do with the 3OC. Building Forts I would rather do with low OC.
The SP were already scarce, because of my earlier mistake, so keeping the AoP just in DC seemd just to result in further cutoffs and raids. But maybe I should have been more patient in the current situation.

Tactically that was an error. You need to pay attention to battle outcomes. But DC was still very vulnerable with only 4 SPs. But if you do not have enough SPs around DC, you face the choice of either being cut off or losing DC. In my opinion, your real problem is using so many 3 OPS cards on T1 to close a blockade zone. You should have used those cards to set up the DC defense. Closing a blockade zone does you no good if you lose the game on T3 or T4 or T5. I have won games as the where I *never* closed a blockade zone and *never* played a blockade card.
99 9/2/2018 5:45:00 AM Fall 1861 Union Message and again DC fell to the rebels. Is moving the AoP out of DC always so horrible? After creating the AotT and the ANV left its Position, I thought getting into Frederick was a good chance. But I should have picked up som SP to avoid you can move after the battle, but those were scarce and this would have neat leaving Baltimore defenceless.
98 9/2/2018 5:42:00 AM Fall 1861 Union Play Strategy card as Operations #111: 2 / Wilson’s Raid
Union may place two Union PC markers in any spaces within four spaces (includes river connections) of a single Union cavalry brigade. The four space range CAN be traced through Northeast Alabama. These PC Markers (in contravention of rule 11.3D), CAN be placed in blockade runner ports/ and or resource spaces devoid of Confederate SPs or forts (but may contain an Ironclad or Torpedoes), resulting in their immediate destruction. Remove from deck if event is played.
