Johnson also goes from 2012 to 2011. He goes from fatigue 2 to 3, so he needs an extended dice roll.

80 12/13/2018 12:04:00 AM Turn 1 USA Message Johnson and Baird each gain a fatigue (now at 2). Each loses 1 manpower, Johnson at 15, Baird at 15.

Baird advances into 1912. Johnson stays in 2012.

Rolling for initiative next.

79 12/12/2018 9:08:00 PM Turn 1 CSA Message Correction: Each routed CSA division is only at Demoralize-1.
78 12/12/2018 9:02:00 PM Turn 1 CSA Message Hood, Stewart and Hindman rout to 1909. Both units are Demoralized-2, F4, disorganized, and strength 6(9), having lost a total of 9 manpower points in the assault and rout.
77 12/12/2018 2:49:00 PM Turn 1 CSA Message That answers my question precisely. Thanks!

I will let Mark know that the question is settled.

I'm at work until 8 PM EST - I will perform the retreat this evening, and examine the CSA predicament overnight.
76 12/12/2018 2:18:00 PM Turn 1 USA Message Ok, we will wait and see what he says. You might want to look at rule 7.6 Retreat Restrictions (Page 16), which states, under Closer to Attacker - "If there is a Grand Assault, the active enemy unit is the one initiating the corps assault."

I believe that is the governing rule for our current case, though it is not exactly the same situation.

75 12/12/2018 2:09:00 PM Turn 1 CSA Message FYI - I sent this situation to the GM to look at.
74 12/12/2018 1:14:00 PM Turn 1 CSA Message Agree on your first three retreat hex explanations. It took me another close reading of the note for the second Priority 4 to notice the "friendly-occupied" provision which I had missed previously.

=====
4) 2009>1909 - Priority 4, enemy ZOC, no road, further from 2012. Manpower loss is 2.
=====

This I am not sure about. In an assault, there is the active leader and "participating" units. I'm treating all participating units as "the active enemy unit triggering the retreat" for purposes of the note under Retreat Chart 1. Hexes 2009 and 1909 are equidistant from Baird in 1913.

I appreciate your patience in going through this. Having fewer manpower losses would help the CSA, if only in an attempt to lower the Union margin of victory (not sure if this bears on second-round seeding). But I like to be clear on how the determination was made.

73 12/12/2018 11:46:00 AM Turn 1 USA Message I agree with meaning b, but I think the manpower loss is only 6. Let's go through it hex by hex. The active attacking unit, Johnston, is in 2012, as retreat takes place before advance.

1) 1911>1912 - Priority 4, enemy ZOC, no road, further from 2012. Manpower loss is 2 (1 from each unit).

2) 1912>2010 - Priority 4, enemy ZOC, no road, not further from 2012, friendly units. Manpower loss is 2.

3) 2010>2009 - Priority 2, no enemy ZOC, no road, further from 2012. No manpower loss.

4) 2009>1909 - Priority 4, enemy ZOC, no road, further from 2012. Manpower loss is 2.

Total manpower loss on retreat is 6. Units end retreat in 2009.

Look it over and see what you think. The two things to remember are 2009 is not in an enemy ZOC and that retreat into 2010 only loses 1 manpower each because the friendly units put the loss to the left of the slash for the 2nd priority 4 retreat option.
72 12/12/2018 11:26:00 AM Turn 1 CSA Message My reasoning for (b) is that each hex entered in a retreat has its own "hex retreated out of."
71 12/12/2018 9:31:00 AM Turn 1 CSA Message Thanks for your reply. I will suspend my decision to resign until this retreat is fully resolved.

What is the definition of "the hex retreated out of"?

(a) the attacked hex.

(b) the hex that immediately precedes a hex entered at each step of the retreat.

Using the retreat path 1912, 1911, 2010, 2009, 1909:

If (a) the manpower loss is 8 (since the final hex 1909 is not further from 1912 than is 2009).

If (b) the manpower loss is 10 (since 2010 is not further from Johnson than is 1911 and 1909 is not further from Baird than is 2009).

70 12/12/2018 3:42:00 AM Turn 1 USA Message Robert:

I think you can retreat to 1909, if that is your goal, losing only 6 manpower rather than 8.
1) 1911 - loses 2 manpower.
2) 2010 - loses 2 manpower.
3) 2009 - loses 0 manpower.
4) 1909 - loses 2 manpower.
Score would be +29 rather than +35.

Let me know if you still wish to resign or if you see a flaw in my suggestion above.

Mike
69 12/11/2018 7:11:00 PM Turn 1 CSA Message I will concede at this point.

Since each retreating CSA unit has to take a manpower loss for each ZOC hex entered (lacking road access), I believe there will be 8 additional manpower losses in getting my two units to hex 1909. With that additional 24 points, I think the score will stand at +35.

Even if I could re-take 2816 and 2011 without loss that would bring your total down to +17, which is still a Union marginal victory.
68 12/11/2018 9:11:00 AM Turn 1 USA Message Modified die roll is +4. Defenders get a 3DR. Attackers get a 2fa. I give it to you to distribute your manpower loses and choose your retreat. Then I will advance and roll for initiative.

Message from USA:
Even roll above, there is a -1 to the attacker.
Odd roll above, then NE.

65 12/11/2018 9:06:00 AM Turn 1 USA Message Robert:
Yes, for the Grand Assault, Sherman adds Baird in 1913. He does not use the other hex he could add from the die roll. My apologies for not directly stating that. Let's see if my boys feel like fighting this time.

First I will roll for the artillery, then for the battle.

64 12/9/2018 4:23:00 PM Turn 1 CSA Message The modifiers look right. You note that your attack total is 32, so I gather this means that Baird is the unit added in the grand assault (joining Johnson's assault). If so, please proceed.
63 12/9/2018 10:33:00 AM Turn 1 USA Message Ok, I will pause here to make sure you agree with everything I have done up till now and with the modifiers to the grand assault.

Force is 32 attacking 27 to 1:1 and no mod.
Tactical is 3 attacking 3, so no mod.
Attack is across a creek, so -1.
Artillery is 4 attacking 5 so -1 unless artillery roll is even, in which case it will be 0.
Flank modifier is +4 for basic, then a -1 mod, so Final Flank is +3.
Assaults always get a +1.

So, overall, mod will be +2 if the artillery die roll is odd, and +3 if it is even.

If you agree, I will do the artillery roll, then the battle roll. If you have corrections, post them.
