67 12/11/2018 10:08:00 PM Summer 1861 Union Message As you may have read on CSW, I'm having extensive problems making VASSAL work for me. What that means to US at the moment is that I couldn't use the vlog file to audit/compare our maps.

I'll get that done; it'll take some time, but I'm going to press on with the game until I have time to work it out.
66 12/11/2018 7:46:00 PM Summer 1861 Confederate Message Note, in my move file, the Army of the Potomac has 9 SPs (rather than 8); that's cause you had a math slip when you moved 3 SPs out of Staunton

Thanks. And I agree, this is not an issue that would come up in a FTF game. So I appreciate you agreeing to the switch of objectives.

If the state of Florida and the St. Marks, Florida space is Confederate controlled, St. Marks is treated as a blockade runner port for the remainder of the game. Place (no LOC required) 2SPs and a fort (optional if available) in the St. Marks space. Remove from deck if event is played.

Message from Confederate:
as event
fort and 2 SPs to St. Marks
60 12/10/2018 3:13:00 PM Summer 1861 Confederate Message As far as I'm concerned, an inaccurate map is no reason to force an opponent to make a previously declared move cause if we were playing FTF, the issue would obviously not exist.

Ft Fisher falls
59 12/10/2018 9:08:00 AM Summer 1861 Union Message BTW don't let my CSW ramblings intimidate you in the slightest, particularly when it comes to rules knowledge. I gave up the rules mistier role in 2011, when I had to concentrate my time on the job hunt, so it's been 7 years since I've been doing that. Being up on the step with the rules and especially all the history and interpretation is a very perishable skill. Even in this game I've been diving into the rule book to do the simplest things!

As for my game play, that's never been better than slightly above average. Much like academia, them that can, do; them that can't, parse rules!!!
58 12/10/2018 9:02:00 AM Summer 1861 Union Message Actually, my mistake was on my map keeping. Apparently I failed to make the transfer of the Mobile SP out to the Fort as you posted in #14. So I was assuming I was hitting an ungarrisoned fort.

If you are still of a mind, to let me have the mulligan, I'm willing to take it. But I'll hit Fort Fisher NC instead. I certainly would prefer the friendly game where we let each other fix blunders, particularly if they're map based.

However, it is a tournament, and even so, it's just a game. So if you'd like, feel free to roll the dice. Worse case for me, I knock off (probably) a CSA SP, but at equal odds, I take the fort anyway. Hardly a huge mistake.

As I say, I prefer the easy victory at Ft. Fisher, but I'll let it be your choice if you want to take it.

57 12/10/2018 2:28:00 AM Summer 1861 Confederate Message Actually, I see you played the card as ops, so I'll let you revise your move since you assumed it would be automatic.

I see small battle +2/+2, so defender die is an automatic 1, but you need a 1* to take the fort, otherwise your force returns to DC.
56 12/10/2018 2:20:00 AM Summer 1861 Confederate Message I know from your reputation on CSW that you're generally one of the references regarding rules clarifications. But it seems to me that you are playing this card both to activate your force and as a combat card, and that doesn't seem kosher to me.

Do you have a citation in an updated FAQ or a CSW post that clarifies this kind of dual use of the card?
55 12/9/2018 9:21:00 PM Summer 1861 Union Play Strategy card as Operations #130: 3 / Union Siege Guns
Union plays card at beginning of a battle (or Amphibious Assault) that has a Confederate fort present and cancels Confederate fort die roll modifier in the battle. Remove from deck if event is played. Draw a strategy card.

Message from Union:
4x OPS 3 cards for me in this hand. I'm going to miss them in the future I fear!

Activate 3 SPs in Washington DC (n.2) and use them to assault Fort Morgan AL.

Combat will be automatic, I believe, and leave the Union occupying the fort with 2 SPs.

53 12/8/2018 1:58:00 PM Summer 1861 Union Play Strategy card as Event #126: 1 / Valley Devastation
If Union infantry SPs occupy all three Shenandoah Valley spaces the Union player places a destroyed Resource marker in all Shenandoah Valley spaces. These destroyed Resource markers cannot be removed and prevent the Confederate player from using the Shenandoah valley as a supply source for the remainder of the game. Remove from deck if event is played.

Message from Union:

Target any enemy cavalry general not located with an army and make a casualty die roll. On a die roll of 1-3 the cavalry general is killed, on a die roll of 4-6 there is no effect.

9 12/1/2018 4:13:00 AM Spring 1861 Confederate Message Hmm, I guess I'm the one who is forgetful.

I only recently started playing in FtP PBM, and those GMs have been either James or Michael. The Washington War tournaments have all been Keith, I think, and I don't think I played any WtP online. Even before you answered and clarified matters, I was thinking if we did meet before, it was probably WAM.

On the topic of Vassal files, if you prefer not to exchange them so often, I have no problem limiting it just to the end of each turn.
8 11/30/2018 10:07:00 PM Spring 1861 Union Message Unless I'm totally senile (which might be coming true sooner than I like) we've been at least two WBCs and maybe a WAM. But it was maybe as much as a decade ago. Plus I believe you've played in some PBEM tournaments that I've GM'd back when I did that. Speaking of GMing, I used to do that at WBC for WTP. (Yes back before Washington's War)

I use VASSAL for keeping my board while PBEMing. I'm willing to exchange VASSAL files if you'd like, but I'm not a big fan of it.
7 11/30/2018 9:57:00 PM Spring 1861 Union Play Strategy card as Operations #35: 1 / Elite Units
Place an Elite unit marker in any space with an Army. CSA: Stonewall Bde or Hood’s Tigers. USA: Iron Bde or Wilder’s Bde. Cannot be played if all elite unit markers are in play for that side.

4 11/30/2018 6:29:00 PM Spring 1861 Confederate Message Hi Don,

Have we been matched up before (if so, it was prob a different game)? You say you're glad that I'm "still an active wargamer," which would indicate maybe we did meet? My bad, if I forgot.

Anyhow, I've been an avid CDW'er since We the People, so yes, I'm "still" an active wargamer ;-)

This is either my third or fourth BPA FtP PBM tournament.

Well, good luck to you. Do you use any graphic tracking, like Cyberboard or Vassal?

2 11/30/2018 5:03:00 PM Spring 1861 Union Message :Hey Roderick!

Because I haven't been to WBC for the last couple of years I haven't had a chance to run into. Glad to see that you're still ab active wargamer. Let's have some fun with this. I'm not going to wish you "Good Luck", but I will wish you "No Bad Luck!"

After you've drawn cards, let me know if you want to open with a campaign. In the meantime, I'm be pondering on how to get to Richmond from here!
1 11/29/2018 6:48:00 AM Spring 1861 Moderator Message EP revised ruling:
The Emancipation Proclamation event requires that the Union wins a medium or large battle. Two exceptions are overruns (5.72) and Army Amphibious Assault (6.15). The Design Note under 5.72 is in the context of overrun only, where any size force overrunning a fort would trigger EP.

* An amphibious assault on an ungarrisoned fort will not trigger EP except in the rare case where an Union Army wins the AA and 6 SP are involved.

** An ungarrisoned coastal fort has 0 SP. If you were to capture it in a Small battle, this would NOT trigger EP.
