...We can talk about it all we want, and we can outline strategies and lines of play, and we have openings, and responses, and we're experts and we know what we're doing, and the dice decide the game, right?

But every game gives me these moments that I don't think I have seen before, things that don't fit, where the usual move isn't a given.

In this game, I have an 'extra' unit for Caen, because I made it to Bourguebus with 243rd from Zone A. So I *could* leave the infantry on Sword. That unit is almost never fresh on the beach. If I leave it there, it probably dies, but it might stall your move against Merville long enough for me to make it complicated for you.

But it will probably die, and I might need it later. I have to make a decision that isn't on the chart, and it's in these decisions that the game is won or lost in probably half of the sessions. There's a correct answer, and I'm not sure what it is.

1 troarn to bourg
2 move twins to St. Lo (it's not terrible to just stop in Marigny)
3 pieux to haye (arguably stop in Barne, but I like to be able to reach Carentan on the 7th if needed)
4 rouen to bourg (recent twin towers play complicates this. I want the arty to regroup into Troarn, so I 'waste' the infantry with an attempt to get to Bourg)
5 houlgate to merville (puts merville triple in play, but complicates the Allied attempt to get to caen and clear merville both on the 7th. "complicates" might not be enough benefit here)

wait for wx change to move from Cherbourg, attempting magic bridge on the fly. w/o wx change, probably try the magic bridge on impulse 6.

So the 4 bridge opening combined with recent Allied play in the center and the threat to envelop Caen have caused me to let the 4-bridge stand almost unchallenged. I used to go harder for the bridge when the allies opened with 4. Now, oddly, the more vulnerable bridge doesn't allow me to prioritize it. This is a new line of play for me, and I'm not very comfortable with it. But I was getting real uncomfortable losing magic bridge games, so I tried to pay attention to how top players are defending these days.

The main drawback of this lone ranger gambit I think is that the Allies could miss the impulse, if they're unable to land arty at Sword or land a follow up wave at Juno, or unable to land their artillery at Omaha.

The main benefit as I see it is that it chases a pair of German defenders out of Omaha, making it perhaps a 1/3 chance to clear Omaha outright on the 6th.

Personally, I don't like giving up the 7:6 into Bretteville on the Gold OR, because an up roll there hurts the Germans so much. But it is a 7:6 and it can disrupt the armor to no effect (although one does have one to waste), and it allows the Germans to blow bridges leading out of Bretteville without hurting them much in the 'fat' part of the result.

I think I still like the upside of the attempt at Bretteville better. But I respect this gambit more than I used to. I can see the complications it gives to the Germans. Also, Foret has become almost critical in so many sessions, and the Port-en-Bessin play pressures it more directly than the Brett play.

the opportunity cost turned out to be nil. the brit tank didn't forego any good target to hit port and allies could easily afford extra pulse at Omaha.

thus gambit was successful and yielded various minor bennies. not a bad haul, as gambits go.

I considered retreating everybody, but I think this is best, putting up a fight, probably better than 50/50 to at least contest the beach, keeps disaster for Amis in play, limits losses to one unit with value instead of 3, retreat forced to Grandcamp could be covered by activating Grandcamp to move units to cover where they need to go.

A little tough to give up 2 'free' CPs for retreating, but this opening I feel forces me to ensure I retreat to Trev.
