228 4/1/2019 12:58:00 AM Summer 1862 Moderator Message I looked over the journal. Wish you guys would set aside a dedicated time frame to finish the game. Even starting this round several weeks earlier, you guys are still in 1862.

I discounted 1 or 2 days delay due to time difference/personal/work stuff ... both players had minor delays of 3 days ... but CSA player had a major delay from 2/25 to 3/4, which will be the deciding factor against him.

so, this game will be awarded to USA player.
227 3/31/2019 5:24:00 PM Summer 1862 Moderator Message Rd 1 & 2 end today. If neither one of you would resign, then I'll adjudicate by tonite.
226 3/29/2019 4:49:00 PM Summer 1862 Confederate Play Strategy card as Operations #81: 3 / Emancipation Proclamation - Reshuffle/Remove
Either player must play this card as an EC on the Strategy Round immediately following a Union large or medium battle victory. Confederate loses 10 SW and 3 SPs (his choice). Union loses 5 SW. Flip GT marker to its Emancipation Proclamation side. Card must be the last one played by a player at which time it can be played as an OC card. If the play of this card as an OC results in a battle victory, there is no Emancipation Proclamation Remove from deck if event is played. If this card is played as an OC or discarded re-shuffle deck at the end of the Strategy Phase.

Message from Confederate:
- Hi Paul,
- Yeah, Vassal works best when it's more than a text output I'm afraid.
- Of course it was designed for the visual part of seeing the board and pieces move so I guess it wasn't quite designed for what I was using it for.
- I'll remain open minded on the game, still not sure it is quite up there with Hannibal, POG etc. but perhaps down the road.
- Especially since I only saw it from the CSA side which seems to be more of a defensive side - which matches the history as it were.
- Okay I was planning on using this to attack at Live Oak but instead I'll just move the SP from Charleston into the Costal fort.
- Have a great weekend and good luck with the tournament!
- Regards, Jeff
- Oh yes the card. :-)

225 3/29/2019 10:43:00 AM Summer 1862 Union Message Jeff:
I still have trouble decoding those messages...thought JJ moved back to Nacogdoches and left only 1 Sp In Sabine...so, I will re-place that fort in Gettysburg.
Enjoyed the game...but you are right...you should have had the USA at least for one game. I hope you give the system another chance...I have been playing FTP for 20 years, and have enjoyed every game of it.
Thanks for the game, however James decides!
Now, for your last card...

224 3/29/2019 10:12:00 AM Summer 1862 Confederate Message Jeff> - Hi Paul,
- Humm... Sabine City has Johnson and 1 SP sitting in it at the moment.
- That was my one successful offensive. :-0
- 198 was the wrap up of the battle, leaving 1 SP in Nacogdoches and Johnson and 2 SP in Sabine and then you took out one of the SP's with a card play - had 4 SP to begin with but one died in the battle.
- Jeff> - Hi Paul, - Wrapping up movement * Referee moves CSA Strength, J. Johnston moves Sabine City, TX -> Nacogdoches, TX * * Referee moves J. Johnston moves Nacogdoches, TX -> Sabine City, TX * - Regards, Jeff
- [that was 198]
- Looks like we will get only through this turn before the end.
- I have 1 card left to play.
- Greatly enjoyed it, dispite feeling I had no clue what my plan was. :-)
- Would have been better if one of my games had been the USA instead of both being CSA to give me the flavor of both sides.... ahh... well.
- Okay let me know where with the fort and I'll try and wrap up late this afternoon when I get back home.
- Regards, Jeff

223 3/28/2019 8:11:00 PM Summer 1862 Union Play Strategy card as Operations #7: 1 / Mud March
Interrupt enemy force currently moving to no more than one space of movement. (Converting a space counts as movement.) Applies to only one move during a Major or Minor campaign card, but not a special army-naval move.

221 3/27/2019 9:24:00 PM Summer 1862 Union Play Strategy card as Event #105: 1 / Detached Cavalry
Played prior to a battle against an army possessing one or more cavalry brigades. The ONLY effects are the Army’s Commanding General’s battle rating (offense or defense) is immediately reduced by 2 and no Cavalry general’s battle ratings may be used in the battle. The effects end at the conclusion of the battle. Cavalry generals are not available for casualty determination. OR: Place one PC marker in any space within four spaces (includes river connections) of a single cavalry brigade. The four space range many not be traced through Northeast Alabama. The space may not contain an enemy SP or fort, but may contain an Ironclad or Torpedoes.

Message from Union:
It doesn’t look like you’re going to attack me anytime soon so I’m going to use this to place a US PC in Baltimore and put down that revolt!
220 3/27/2019 9:23:00 PM Summer 1862 Union Message So just to be clear only one SP moved and it ended up in Charleston.
219 3/27/2019 9:54:00 AM Summer 1862 Confederate Message - Hi Paul,
- Hummm..... riverine movement....
- I'd looked at that but the only thing I could find was under 6.22 dealt with moving down a river and having to stop when you reach a coastal fort [since obviously it would have to use sea movement after that]
- In the case of Wilmington there is not a river in any case.
- I would think [logicially] it would be more like a river crossing, however that says nothing about costal forts.
- Now 6.82 says the CSA can't retake a costal fort because they can't launch amph. assualts which would indicate it requires sea movement.
- But that would mean that the CSA could never put an SP on a fort because it can't use Sea Movement.....
- grrr..... I play a lot of ASL and rules like this drive me crazy when they aren't clear.
- Okay let me take a look at BGG to see if there is anything there.
-
- Humm..... okay someone posted a Riverine Chart...... if I'm reading it correctly it says the impact on CSA for a CSA costal for
- River Crossing - Always permittted Riverine Movement - unaffected.
- So not sure if that references this specific example, but not seeing where a costal fort would effect a river crossing otherwise?
- So in other words not seeing anything definite one way or the other perhaps.
-
- Rules reference for it not being allowed?
- Not trying to be picky, just trying to get a handle on this rule set.
- Sad part is I find ASL easier in a lot of cases - of course it has been vetted for 30+ years. :-)
-
- So if he can't cross he would end in Charleston, if he can he's in the fort.
-
- Humm.... holding back Generals, I don't see that being an option if you are on the defense?
- Or am I missing something?
- Again. :-)
-
- Regards, Jeff
- Logfile written.
218 3/26/2019 8:09:00 PM Summer 1862 Union Message OK, I am trying to decode that entry...was there an SP in Charleston before you moved one there from Marion?
If so, the CSA can move 1 SP to an associated fort. If not, if the SP moved from Marion, then it has to hold in Charleston, and not move to the fort, because that involves road/rail AND riverine movement and you can't combine the two types of movement.
I think, in the end, you decided to only move 1 SP, which is correct...the card can only be used as a division move if the total number of SP's moved start in the same space.
Let me know about that 1 SP in Charleston, and then I will make a move.
217 3/26/2019 8:04:00 PM Summer 1862 Union Message Well, there is always a chance that rather than fight, and potentially lose a general, a force could retreat.
That's not likely to happen in the Capital, where everyone is going to dig in, but there is always a chance that no battle occurs...and when you have a full staff, you can always hold a few generals out of the battle, like I did with my cav, just to keep from overloading the battles and losing the generals.
216 3/26/2019 9:35:00 AM Summer 1862 Confederate Play Strategy card as Operations #128: 3 / Union Naval Supply Shortage
The Union blockade level is decreased by one. Remove from deck if event is played.

Message from Confederate:

* Referee moves CSA Strength moves Nacogdoches, TX -> Sabine City, TX *
* Referee moves CSA Strength moves Wilmington, NC -> Marion, SC *
* Referee moves CSA Strength moves Marion, SC -> Florence, SC *
* Referee moves CSA Strength moves Florence, SC -> Kingston, SC *
* Referee moves CSA Strength moves Kingston, SC -> Charleston, SC *
- Humm... have to start from the same space
* Referee moves CSA Strength moves Charleston, SC -> Fort Sumter, SC *
- Can't seem to find anything on moving into CSA controlled costal forts???
* Referee moves CSA Strength moves Sabine City, TX -> Nacogdoches, TX *
- Okay only the one space moved.
-
- Humm..... but if that was the intent you would think it would be limited to the leaders committed to the battle.
- I just have a hard time believing that any general would launch an attack that they knew they were going to lose in order to kill an enemy general.
- While you could be right on the concept they were trying to show, and a lot of leaders did die leading thier troops
- Allowing a side to launch such an attack to try and replicate the actions of the leaders on the other side is just not a good design imho
- Regards, Jeff

215 3/26/2019 8:30:00 AM Summer 1862 Union Message I don't want to speak for the game designers, but it is a way to model the actual events of the Civil War, and keeps either side from creating +9 stacks that can't be stopped. If you want to use the extraordinary abilities of Jackson, for instance, in addition to Lee, it comes at a risk that the very agressive tendencies of Jackson on Offense may get him killed. If a leader is using his ability to fight, it likely means that he is at the front, and personally involved in the battle. You only ave to look at the numbers of General Officers killed in battle to realize that leading troops from the front was a very risky business.
It is also why the US only has 2 cav leaders for most of the war...otherwise the USA columns would be able to be too agreesive early in the war which was not historically true.
I won't say that it is a perfect system...hence only being able to get troops to move if you have the correct OPS cards, but on a Grand Strategic level it tends to reflect the actual ebb and flow of the battles and the war, over time.
214 3/26/2019 8:15:00 AM Summer 1862 Union Play Strategy card as Event #31: 2 / Contraband of War

Medium Battle of Richmond...
1. USA +1
2. CSA +9
204 3/25/2019 3:42:00 PM Summer 1862 Union Message Jeff:
I have ANV at 11 total...not 13, since the creation of Cav reduces the Army by 1 each time, the effect is no change.
If ANV is 11, I am attacking with 8 SP, to make this a medium Battle, and just for the record my cav is staying in Williamsburg, so I can't lose him...
I will go roll the battle...
203 3/25/2019 11:51:00 AM Summer 1862 Union Message Jeff let me go back and count… Adding a cavalry leader does not add a cavalry brigade to the stack… I had the army at 10 SP including the cabin leaders. I want to verify that before we fight but in any case is going to be a medium battle.
202 3/25/2019 11:03:00 AM Summer 1862 Confederate Message - Hi Paul,
- Grrr.... enough with stealing my cards!!!
- Hummm... actually 11 SP's at Richmond.
- +2 Cav. SP's for total of 13
- I believe
- Now to look at army battles here
- So 1 for Beauregards, use Jackson for another 3, Longstreeet for another 3, +2 for fort, for a total of 9 I believe.

Confederate immediately receives three SPs in any open Blockade Runner Port, no more than one SP per port, but more than one SP per Blockade zone is permitted. If insufficient ports are available, the excess SPs are lost.

Message from Union:
And, yet another reinforcement card for the CSA...lol...The USA kept 7 CSA SP's our of the war, just by getting these cards!
I will use this to Fire-up MacLellan's AOC to attack Richmond...but I want this to be a medium battle, so since (I believe) Beau has 10 in Richmond, Mac will attack with 8 troops, leaving the Cavalry +5 in Williamsburg...Mac's mods, since he has only a 0 attack modifier, will be +1 (since he is only allowed 1 subordinate general. I am leaving the Cav Behind because I expect to lose this battle, and I expect you to get over a 10, and I do not want to risk my cavalry in this battle, because i may need them later...lol>
Any reaction?
If not, I will roll the battle, but I need to know your modifiers...which generals and which modifiers are you using?

197 3/23/2019 3:00:00 PM Summer 1862 Union Message Johnston has the opportunity to keep moving since he was 2 to 1 greater than the pope… Does Johnston stop in the space or keep moving?
196 3/23/2019 2:58:00 PM Summer 1862 Union Message Yes, you got it right. No leader casualties because there was no Tyrell in excess of 10. Pokes force was destroyed so he goes to the track and Johnston occupies the space.
195 3/23/2019 1:56:00 PM Summer 1862 Confederate Message - And a 3 for you gives a 1

180 3/20/2019 12:46:00 PM Spring 1862 Union Message OK, a starting point for SR:
1. Philly has 4 SP and sends the 4 SP to DC. DC n4.
2. Cincy has 10 SP and sends 7 to MacLellan in Williamsburg. AoC n14
3. St. Louis has 5 SP and will hold at 5SP.

Pleasonton goes to join AoC since I believe that McDowell already has Cav (if I have this reversed, then the new cav goes to the Army that does not have any). All unassigned leaders go to DC,
Over to you to finish up...I will end the turn, then get cards, and wait for you to get yours...

178 3/20/2019 9:27:00 AM Spring 1862 Confederate Message - I did like that 5th column in Baltimore, seemed only fair after your ravagining of the coastline
- So let's place Missouri and KY first
* CSA Strength created in Rolla, MO

Correct on Texas
170 3/19/2019 12:11:00 PM Spring 1862 Union Message The attrition looks OK… As for conversions the union gets Sabin Texas which closes the western go zone as well… Agree?
169 3/19/2019 12:11:00 PM Spring 1862 Union Message Hi Geoff! Thanks for doing that… Are you sure the West Virginia joins the union?

164 3/12/2019 1:25:00 PM Spring 1862 Union Play Strategy card as Event #1: 1 / Empty Haversacks
Can be played as an Interrupt card to cancel the activation of any Confederate force, OR during a Union player's turn to cause a Confederate force to immediately execute an attrition procedure. In addition, conduct Forage if force has no LOC.

Message from Union:
I will use this to force the AoNV to take attrition, which I think means Beau loses 2 SP...correct?
163 3/12/2019 1:22:00 PM Spring 1862 Union Message Maybe I figured it out:
JJ took 2 from Springfield, then left 1 in Jackson, making his force 1 SP, then advanced to Nacodogches and picked up the 1 SP there...meaning he has 2 SP in Nacogdoches...is that correct?
162 3/12/2019 1:14:00 PM Spring 1862 Union Message Sp, Price loses 1 and is sent back to Rolla. Then JJ + (??) some SP's head for Texas and stops in Nacogdoches, where he is staring at Pope in Sabine. Just for the record, how many did JJ take?

Either player may move up to two infantry SPs from the same space as if they were led by a General. This move is a Corps move and may enter enemy controlled spaces because the SPs are moving as if they are led by a general.

148 3/6/2019 7:51:00 AM Spring 1862 Union Play Strategy card as Operations #102: 3 / First Manassas
Confederate Player may move 2 SPs using Strategic Movement from the same space using rail connections only (5 space maximum) to the same space with a Confederate General who is then activated and must attempt to enter a space with at least one or more Union SPs or fort. OR play this card as an automatic 2 space interception. Intervening space must be friendly controlled and free of enemy SPs. The intervening space may be the one just exited by the moving enemy force. No Generals or SPs may be picked up or dropped off during the intercept.

Message from Union:
Pope +3 SP from DC will AA Sabine City...I think there is only 1 SP there and there is no fort, correct? If not I may change the landing spot...if I am correct, then here are the Mods:
US+4 (AA+1, Leader +1, ratio +2)
CSA +0 (no fort)
Let me know if I have it right and whether you have any other modifiers, and then I will roll it...
147 3/4/2019 2:17:00 PM Spring 1862 Confederate Play Strategy card as Operations #75: 2 / Western Concentration Block
Confederate player can either remove or demote an army commander in any state except Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, or Florida for no political cost. OR Confederate Player may move 5 SPs using Strategic Movement (rail connections only) to the same space with a Confederate General who is then activated and must attempt to enter a space with at least one or more Union SPs or fort. If a general casualty occurs in a battle caused by this card, the Commanding General is eligible, this is an exception to the rules. See 4.5 Remove from deck if event is played.

139 2/20/2019 1:24:00 PM Spring 1862 Union Play Strategy card as Operations #117: 3 / Clandestine Blockade Runner Port
If the state of Florida and the St. Marks, Florida space is Confederate controlled, St. Marks is treated as a blockade runner port for the remainder of the game. Place (no LOC required) 2SPs and a fort (optional if available) in the St. Marks space. Remove from deck if event is played.

Message from Union:
USA will AA Ft. Gadson with 3 SP from DC...I calculate it as follows:
USA has a +1 AA modifier and the CSA has a +2 fort, resulting in a net +1 for the CSA, then the US has a 3-1 advantage in troops, making the USA a net +2.
The small battle at Ft. Gadson will be:
1. USA +2
2. CSA +1
