(Carthage) Place one Elephant unit (at strength level 2) in Carthage. If an Elephant unit is not available, place two regular CUs in Carthage

Message from Carthage:

Hanno gets 2 elephants
35 2/15/2019 10:50:00 PM 218 BC Carthage Message nothing wrong with that play, and I made a mistake by not leaving a CU there in the first place

You obviously can't hold the card. And I assume you're playing it now and not last cause you have another card that you want to hold even longer than this one
34 2/15/2019 9:29:00 PM 218 BC Rome Play Strategy card as Operations #42: 1 / Elephant Fright
(Rome) Play if attacked by elephants. They have no effect on you and the Carthaginian player immediately loses two BCs.

Message from Rome:
You can tell me if this is a good play or not at the end of the game. Hate to let the card go, but yeah, well whattya gonna do? (--Homer Simpson, Great American philosopher). My rationale is that for you to gain G-A as a province, you either need to play a flip card or move Hannibal to leave a CU or occupy a red space and then play a PC ops. I know this PC will die during attrition but will have served a purpose

1 PC in Taurini
33 2/14/2019 8:43:00 PM 218 BC Carthage Message You are correct. The usual way to flip control is by having CUs (they don't have to be armies) sitting on the corresponding spaces you wish to flip.

To my recollection, the only other way for Rome to flip a space is that Diplomacy card you played earlier. Carthage has a second event that flips one space in Sicily (and also adds a CU)
32 2/14/2019 6:20:00 PM 218 BC Carthage Message Hi Mike,

So, where do you hail from? Am I losing you to PrezCon this weekend?

I'm in SoCal, so PrezCon is not a consideration for me :-)

16 2/7/2019 9:38:00 AM 218 BC Rome Message Stuart Tucker wrote one of the articles I read.

Cyber is fine -- might be good if you send your gbx file so we're in sync; don't use dropbox

not campaigning

I'll definitely be interested in any comments after our game; viewing it as a learning experience in prep for the next one
15 2/7/2019 3:40:00 AM 218 BC Carthage Message I would take the opposite view of the General article. (Btw, did Stuart Tucker write it? If so, he's the WBC GM for Hannibal :-)

Whenever I teach the game to new players, I always give them the Carthaginians because Rome can be hard to play for a beginner if you get a bad consul election and have no 3-ops to move.
14 2/7/2019 3:39:00 AM 218 BC Carthage Message campaigning?

12 2/7/2019 3:36:00 AM 218 BC Carthage Message I tend to prefer Cyberboard in that it does a better job of preserving game state in its move files.

Do you use dropbox?
11 2/5/2019 9:09:00 PM 218 BC Rome Message use both vassal and cyber; which has the better module?

7 2/5/2019 9:06:00 PM 218 BC Carthage Message Roderick: no problem with ACTS -- why don't I just play both sides and tell you that I, er. . ., I mean, which side won? No, don't expect you to go for that. Did read in an old General magazine that a newbie should play the Romans. Unlikely that the result will matter upon which side I play

Will see if I can change it; if not, will start a new one
6 2/5/2019 6:05:00 AM 218 BC Rome Message Hi Mike,

Looks like we need to change sides, then.

Even though I created this game, I cannot seem to edit the Carthage player. If you are not able to switch Carthage to me, we probably need to delete this game and re-create it.

Regarding your bid, yes the game is balanced, but most players tend to prefer Carthage if only for the fact that Carthage wins ties and usually controls the initiative. Consequently, players who prefer Rome usually bid 0 with the expectation that their opponent wants to play Carthage anyhow (as I am doing exactly that).

Btw, once we get ACTS straightened out, do you use either Cyberboard or Vassal?
5 2/5/2019 6:01:00 AM 218 BC Rome Change Rome player Rome player changed from Roderick Lee to Mike Kaye
4 2/4/2019 9:08:00 PM 218 BC Carthage Message Roderick: nice to meet you across the virtual board.

This is my first game of Hannibal, so will appreciate your forbearance on correctness of my moves plus some feedback after we're done on what I should do better.

I do not have a feel for normal bidding ranges, but have seen some data that the game is fairly balanced (though some players do better as Carth and some as Rom). Therefore, will bid 0 for the Romans

Mike

You have first bid. Don't worry about the sides as we can change them, if necessary, after the bid.
