270 4/19/2019 9:09:00 AM Fall 1915 Allies Message I understand, I prefer to build up a good size of Russians first and then make a sudden move with them (like in this game), but sometimes it also makes sense to strike earlier.
If at all possible I usually try to amass my reinforcements in one spot first (like I did in London) before moving them, because that saves ops...

268 4/18/2019 9:08:00 AM Fall 1915 Moderator Message Congrats on your win, Moritz, see you in round 2 in June.

Paul - thanks for participating and, of course, you too will have a shot at POG redemption in round 2.
267 4/18/2019 7:16:00 AM Fall 1915 Central Powers Message By the way, you asked why I put a GE Army in Breslau early on, when it didn't seem to be needed.

I've played recently against an AP player who is extremely aggressive with the Russians. Often he goes around Austria, heading straight for Breslau and then Berlin!

So I've become a bit paranoid - if I don't have an army in Breslau, there'll soon be two or three RU armies knocking on the door!

But of course you have a different approach, so my fears were unfounded. It's a tribute to the game that there can be such a range of different paths to victory! :)

266 4/18/2019 7:10:00 AM Fall 1915 Allies Message This could actually be an interesting strategy - perhaps it is worth refining it a little and trying it out in a situation with less bad luck (I think not destroying the French forts with your unusually unlucky rolls several times in a row also played a role, as these armies could then not attack, which would have hurt me a lot).

It was a pleasure playing you, Paul, good luck with your further games, and we might meet again of course!
265 4/18/2019 7:04:00 AM Fall 1915 Central Powers Message After some thought, Iíve decided to concede! An awful lot would have to go right for the CP to stand any chance now, and Iíll be quite busy over the next couple of months, so Iíll cut my losses at this point!

What I was trying to do with the deck was take a first pass through in which Iíd play as events the 2 point cards and most of the 3 point ones, particularly the army cards. Iíd use the big 4-5 point ones for OPS or RP, which would give me a lot of options to move and fight. And then on the second pass through the deck, which would be slimmed down a lot, Iíd play the big cards for WS. I knew it would mean Iíd get to LW and TW later than you, but I hoped it wouldnít be much later, and in the meantime Iíd be putting the Western Front and Italy under pressure.

That was the theory anyway! Didnít quite work out in practice. :)

Part of the problem was a bit of bad luck, with as you mentioned, Italy and Romania coming in early, and some bad combat rolls. The devastating defeat at Uzhgorod hurt particularly, since it seemed the natural point to dig in and block the Russian advance.

But I also made some awful decisions, over-extending in France, putting too much effort into taking Verdun and Nancy. Spreading out the Heer in 1 army per space was just inviting disaster once the large British stack got there. I kept telling myself I had to reorganize the Western Front and dig in, but never got the opportunity to set it up properly.

If my losses last turn hadnít been so severe, I would have played Bulgaria and War in Africa as events, so Iíd be at 7 WS now, and within sight of TW. But as things stand, TW is a rainbow that Iím never going to catch! :)

Thanks for the game, well played, and good luck for the rest of the tourney!

264 4/13/2019 1:02:00 PM Fall 1915 Allies Message I would agree that it doesn't look very hopeful for you right now, although it still can be a long slog until it is decided and I could make mistakes. But the Western and Eastern front look already hopeless, and once I get Allenby on the map also the Near East, because I am so far ahead in WS that it will take ages for you to get there and place your Turkish Armies (which are the only chance you have against Allenby and Cauc Army).

I am an experienced player, but I only fare well with the AP for some reason, a really good CP strategy has never been possible for me against strong players. BUt it must exist, as in later phases of tourneys CP wins more often than AP.

In general I was wondering why you didn't play your War Status cards when you could have done so, as going to Total War quickly is essential for both players. You desperately need the strong reinforcement cards (especially the Turkish ones, because without them you don't stand a chance in the Near East). You also desperately need Bulgaria to get cheap corps that you can SR where needed (mostly to Turkey, but I've seen Bulgarians defend Germany). And you also need to be at TW to hammer on Italy with your German armies (which otherwise are not allowed to enter Italy!), After reaching Total War, it is not necessary for the CP player to raise it further (as he only needs it for the Russian Revolution, but that is not necessary to win), but it continues to be important for the AP. Once the AP raises WS enough the CP can still think about the Russian revolution if he is placed well in Russia, so the AP does all the work!

What I usually see from CP players is to be extremely aggressive on one front (either Western or Eastern, Western is easier at the beginning and you always threaten sudden death victory threat there), and play more defensively on the other, but playing every reinforcement card they can get and every WS status whenever they can. Once both players are at TW they usually have already sent German armies to the Italian border to create even more aggravation for the AP, and that helps to keep up the pressue or enable an auto-win.

In this game your offensive in France started very strong and I was astonished you then placed your reinforcements in Breslau, where at that point there were not desperately needed. I was really relieved seeing that, as I barely held on in France!
I was lucky to get Italy and Romania early so you were not prepared for them, you made good advance in Italy but with the 2 armies against my 2 Italian armies you cannot really do a lot (and my Italians "grow" automatically with every RP play, whereas you have to get your forces there). But in the meantime I could build up my forces on both Western and Eastern fronts, and it doesn't look as if you can counter that soon, as my positions there are pretty alright now.

But who knows - I have played a game where the CP lost an army through attrition and still managed to win against me (some give up if this happens) - so it's your decision if you want to continue or not!
263 4/13/2019 10:33:00 AM Fall 1915 Central Powers Message OK, I'm on the verge of conceding. I made mistakes all the way through, beginning with the attacks in France. In future, I'll just dig in behind the Rhine, as unhistorical as that is, and play cards for WS. The advance into Italy was also pointless.

I have a hand of 2 point cards, only one 4 point, and I'm well short of TW. Both Western and Eastern fronts are falling apart. No hope for CP any more.

I get the impression you're a VERY experienced player. Any tips/suggestions? Is defending the Rhine the only option for CP?

174 3/30/2019 9:55:00 AM Spring 1915 Central Powers Message The Verdun fort survives, but is under siege.

Regarding the play of MEF, there's an error in the Cyberboard game file. There should be Trench 1 at Giresun, not a TU corps. The TU corps should be at Adana instead.

That means there is no OOS issue for Gaza and Beersheba.

Would you like to change the move?

Message from Central Powers:

At Verdun, the Germans need to do an attack roll. On 5-6, they do enough damage to wipe out the fort as well as the BEc. I'll roll for that now ...
