43 2/19/2019 1:42:00 PM August 1914 Central Powers Message GE4 flips in Metz

I did not know that u can use SR to draw Corp from the Reserve Box. I ordered the Deluxe version of POG and am awaiting it..have been using the 3rd ed of the rulebook.

42 2/18/2019 5:01:00 PM August 1914 Allies Play Strategy card as Strategic Redeployment #3: 3 / Russian Reinforcements (11th Army)

Message from Allies:
Your decision on which German army to flip will not affect my move.

Round Two

Riga: RUc to Warsaw

Odessa: RUc to Lutsk

RB: BRc to Brussels (0); FRc to Bar le Duc (5,0)
41 2/18/2019 4:58:00 PM August 1914 Allies Message Germans win 5/3. Flips a German army and FR2. I will eliminate (FR2) to remain. FRc deploys from RB (6,0)

Message from Allies:
Attack on Nancy

Germans 12
French 9

39 2/18/2019 12:51:00 PM August 1914 Central Powers Message Nancy

38 2/18/2019 11:09:00 AM August 1914 Allies Message The attack on Verdun would be 12 vs 12. The attack on Nancy would be 12 vs 9 because the Nancy fort is weaker. So which space would you like to assault?

37 2/18/2019 10:39:00 AM August 1914 Central Powers Message sorry for my indecisions...but since both battle uses the same columns .. please go ahead with my first battle...i.e. against Verdun.

36 2/18/2019 12:19:00 AM August 1914 Allies Message The three German armies would fire on the 12 column due to the trench in Nancy. The two French armies would fire on the 9 column because their trench shifts the column from the six column to the nine column (here the two factor fort does not change the column). Proceed with the 12 vs 9 attack?

35 2/17/2019 9:13:00 PM August 1914 Central Powers Message I forgot about adding the fort...
I will attack Nancy from Metz + Strasbourg... so the french will roll on the 8 column...

34 2/17/2019 12:27:00 PM August 1914 Allies Message In your attack, the French would fire on the 12 column too. Verdun has a three factor fort, which is added to the two defending armies for a total of nine. Then the French get a one column shift for the trench in Verdun. So both the Germans and the French would fire on the 12 column. Would you like to proceed with the attack or do something else?

33 2/17/2019 11:38:00 AM August 1914 Central Powers Play Strategy card as Operations #4: 2 / Severe Weather
Defending units in a mountain space in Fall/Winter or a swamp space in Spring/Fall get a +2 drm.

Message from Central Powers:
Attack markers in Sedan & Metz
2nd, 4th & 5th GE attack 3rd & 4th Fr army in Verdun. Since Verdun has a trench I cannot attempt a flank attack. The GE will roll on the 12-14(one column shift to the left) the FR on the 6-8. GE will not play a CC

32 2/16/2019 5:58:00 PM August 1914 Allies Message I light of that, RU3 will remain in Dubno.

31 2/16/2019 5:55:00 PM August 1914 Allies Message Oops. I was wrong about the AH corp in Stanislaw and the RU corp in Lutsk. I checked the rules for this event, and these two corps do start in the RB. So Stanislaw and Lutsk are vacant, and there are 4 AH corps and 6 RU corps in the RB.

30 2/16/2019 5:41:00 PM August 1914 Allies Message Also, there are only five Russian corps in the RB because one of the original six starts the game in Lutsk.

29 2/16/2019 5:38:00 PM August 1914 Allies Message RU3 advances from Dubno into Tarnopol.
Ready for CP Round two.

28 2/16/2019 5:36:00 PM August 1914 Allies Message You calculated the losses correctly. AH3 is eliminated and the RB corp flips. There are only three AH corps left in the RB because in this scenario one of the original AH corps from the RB deploys in Stanislaw.

You are correct that trenches in the attacker's spaces do not affect the firing columns.

27 2/16/2019 2:29:00 PM August 1914 Central Powers Message Been reading the rules again.. .. when an attacker in a trench attacks a defender in a trench will the attacker in return fire get the benefit of a trench? I would think not...

26 2/16/2019 2:20:00 PM August 1914 Central Powers Message AH(Corp) retreats to Stanislaw and ends in Lemberg.

AH reserve (4,0)
Now u may advance up to both because the RU Armies did not flip

25 2/16/2019 2:16:00 PM August 1914 Central Powers Message LN of 2 flips the counter. another LN=2 reduces it to a corp. to bring the total LN=5 the corp is flipped i.e. (corp)
it must now retreat 2 hexes

24 2/16/2019 2:14:00 PM August 1914 Central Powers Message trying to understand the combat...under the 6 column the dr=4+1=5 so the AH lose 5 before thet return fire because it was a flank attack
23 2/16/2019 2:11:00 PM August 1914 Central Powers Die roll request Request: 6-sided die x 1

Message from Central Powers:

+1 Flank

22 2/15/2019 9:43:00 PM August 1914 Allies Message Russian flank attack succeeds. So Russians fire on six column before the AH returns fire.

Message from Allies:
Rolling for Russian flank attack (+1 DRM)

20 2/15/2019 9:42:00 PM August 1914 Allies Play Strategy card as Combat #4: 2 / Pleve
RU units get a +1 drm for an attack or defense.

Message from Allies:
For Russian attack on Tarnopol
19 2/15/2019 9:40:00 PM August 1914 Allies Play Strategy card as Operations #1: 4 / British Reinforcements (2nd Army)
2nd Army, 1 corps.

Message from Allies:
+1 VP for Sedan; total increases to 11

Round One

Antwerp: BE1 to Brussels

Chateau Thierry: (FR5) to Melun

Dubno and Kamenets-Podolski: RU3 and RU8 attack Tarnopol for the Russian mandatory offensive. Using a cc for a +1 DRM and trying a flank attack. I will roll for the flank attack and let you resolve the battle.

By the way, I use parentheses (e.g., (FR5)) to show that a unit is flipped. When a corp leaves the reserve box, I use parentheses to show the remaining corps of that nationality in the RB (e.g., (6,2) would show six full strength corps and two flipped corps remain in the RB.
18 2/15/2019 5:44:00 PM August 1914 Central Powers Message Flip the 1st the 2nd advances into Sedan.

the method u described to resolve combat sounds great.

17 2/14/2019 9:36:00 PM August 1914 Allies Message Three hits. So Germans win 5-3. Flips FR5. (FR5) retreats to Chateau Thierry via Verdun. One of the German armies flips. The two full strength armies have the option of advancing into Sedan.

Sometimes the defender can play a combat card, so you might want to hold off on rolling until the defender has an opportunity to play a card. Otherwise the defender can decide whether to play the card after seeing the result.

Also, we might want to adopt the practice of the defender rolling both dice after checking to see if the attacker calculated the firing columns correctly. That way, the attacker has the option of changing his attack after learning the correct firing columns. If you agree, the attacker would state the firing column for each side and then let the defender check before rolling.

6 2/13/2019 9:53:00 PM August 1914 Central Powers Message unless playing the allies is easier...i'm ok with the central powers. I will request a die roll

5 2/12/2019 10:24:00 PM August 1914 Allies Message In light of this being your first game, please choose the side you prefer. If you would like to play the Central Powers, please proceed by rolling for turn one mandatory offensives and your first round. If you prefer the Allies, we need to switch sides in the ACTS file before proceeding with the game.

4 2/12/2019 9:44:00 PM August 1914 Central Powers Message I have never played this game before...tried reading the rules but its hard to follow...hope my lack of experience does not get in the way of u enjoying the game. I will play any side...

3 2/11/2019 10:40:00 PM August 1914 Allies Message Hello Eric. I live in Virginia and can normally play a card each day. I prefer the WBC Historical Scenario as described on the POG Tournament Page. Supply warnings are fine with me. I plan to use VASSAL but I don't think we need to exchange files. I prefer the Allies. If you prefer them too, we can start the bidding process.

1 2/11/2019 9:06:00 PM August 1914 Moderator Message Welcome to Round One of the BPA VIII Paths of Glory Tournament!

I'll be your game moderator and should be your first point of contact for any issues related to this match. As always, the priority should be for a fun and fair match for all involved. The official launch date for this round is February 14th, 2019 but feel free to start your match immediately. Round 1 concludes on Wednesday, June 19, 2019; you'll have 125 days this round.

Contacting me: I am based in the UK (GMT 0) and will generally respond to all match questions within 24 hours. I strongly recommend you e-mail me directly at "paulhubbard@hotmail.co.uk" referencing your match # when you do so. If I do not respond within 48 hours, please escalate to one of the other GMs (mdauer92@yahoo.com or gregorit@yahoo.com).

Issue Resolution: If either player has a concern about a particular ruling or resolution I make, feel free to raise it to the other GMs. I will also reach out to Tom and Michael if there's something I'm not sure of. Please remember that the ACTS logs are viewable for all, direct e-mail exchanges with your opponent are obviously permitted but GMs will view the ACTS logs as the authoritative record of the game.

Getting Started:
Here are my thoughts on how to get the match started:
- Introduce yourselves and set expectations regarding your availability and game pace.
- Agree on the scenario. The default is the WBC Historical Scenario as described on the POG Tournament Page and I strongly recommend its usage.
- Agree on usage of supply warnings. They are strongly recommended.
- There is no mandatory usage of a particular PBEM tool. VASSAL is recommended but not necessary and exchanging game logs is also optional.
- Bid for sides. (Initial bidder is to be random, one of you should just roll a die with a 50-50 shot of that player bidding first. Switch sides in ACTS if necessary, contact me if you need help with this.
- Draw cards. CP will then kick off the fun by rolling the turn 1 MO and playing their first card.

Have fun!

Paul Hubbard
