794 7/3/2019 8:32:00 PM 203-201 BC Carthage Message Apparently the Flank Left was too radical a concept for the Roman generals to grasp!
793 7/3/2019 8:25:00 PM 203-201 BC Rome Message >>>I had luck in battles, but you had quite a bit on the retreat rolls ...

I would rather win the battles than worry about retreats... we had 18 battles in this game, I lost more in this one game than in a whole year!
792 7/3/2019 7:51:00 PM 203-201 BC Carthage Play Strategy card as Operations #30: 3 / Carthaginian Siege Train
(Carthage) Place the Siege Train Marker with any Carthaginian General. A General with the Siege Train ignores the -1 die roll modifier applied against Carthaginian sieges.

Message from Carthage:
Like I said before, I knew the odds were against me but I had no other realistic choice - only one "3" card so the likelihood of making any progress via sea invasion was virtually zero. With the two Hannibal cards, I had to get into Italy and at least survive long enough to play them. I thought I was toast when you played the forced march to get Scipio into battle right after Hannibal crossed the Alps - when I pulled out that victory I thought I had a decent chance of pulling it off.

I had luck in battles, but you had quite a bit on the retreat rolls - I think I won with a DE three times and you never rolled a 5 or 6. I was hoping to pull Syracuse Allies on this last turn which would probably have guaranteed me the win without really doing anything, but it was not to be so I had to go for the risky land invasion.

My map shows that you already had a PC in Boii (log #675), but it doesn't matter since no other placement will help you. I was worried about you having one of four specific cards that would have complicated things, but Native Guides was certainly not one of them.

As always, thanks for a fun and challenging game. Hopefully I have reached the status of official "James Pei Nemesis" now. George Young and Marvin Birnbaum are mine!

Looks like you're up against Tim Tow next - I'm sure he'll be pleased to play you :)

I wouldn't be at all surprised if we meet again on the cardboard battlefield. Better luck in your next game!
791 7/3/2019 7:35:00 PM 203-201 BC Rome Message by not killing Hannibal in 3 tries when the odds were in my favor, your daring attempt won the game... congrats.
790 7/3/2019 7:34:00 PM 203-201 BC Rome Play Strategy card as Operations #5: 2 / Native Guide
(Both) If you use this card as an OC to move an Army, and the Army crosses a Mountain Pass, you may modify your Mountain Pass Attrition die roll by -3.

Message from Rome:

789 7/3/2019 7:33:00 PM 203-201 BC Rome Message oh boy, you had both Hannibal cards... I did't even get any of the good cards...
788 7/2/2019 11:24:00 PM 203-201 BC Carthage Play Strategy card as Event #27: 2 / I have come into Italy ...
(Carthage) Play if Hannibal is in Italy. Convert two Roman non-walled PCs into Carthaginian PCs in any space in Italy which does not contain Roman CUs.

Message from Carthage:
Because I had this and "Hannibal Charms Italy" and not much else, my only hope was to get Hannibal into Italy and survive at least for a couple of card plays. The odds were definitely in your favor, but I had to take the risk and it looks like it paid off. Otherwise I would have lost for sure.

Flip PCs in Taurini and Verona to Carthage.
787 7/2/2019 11:10:00 PM 203-201 BC Carthage Message I told you before, you can't beat Carthaginians with flank lefts! :)
All I had left were frontal assaults. Glad you finally missed the counter and ran out.
786 7/2/2019 8:50:00 PM 203-201 BC Rome Message Marcellus loses 5 cu, now n2... retreat back to Rome.

750 6/30/2019 10:41:00 PM 203-201 BC Carthage Message I'm still a bit confused about this funky interception rule, but I think in this case I get the extra card for interception since Marcellus was expecting an overrun. In that case, I make it:
Rome: 7 CUs + 3 Marcellus + 2 allies = 12
Carthage: 6 CUs + 4 Hannibal + 1 interception = 11
Please confirm, deal and start the battle (or back up!) :)
