117 5/20/2019 9:41:00 PM May-Aug 1942 Allies Message I will use my pass. Back to you.
116 5/20/2019 9:22:00 PM May-Aug 1942 Japanese Message I eliminate the 3 AUS corp.
115 5/20/2019 9:21:00 PM May-Aug 1942 Allies Message That looks like two 100% results so we both must lose 4 steps (all are 12 strength) and I hold Rangoon for the moment. For your losses I will flip all then eliminate the 15th Army. In my PBM Indomitable goes back to Colombo and the two 11AF units go to Jarhat. I will send a log file but you will need to identify who gets totally eliminated.

That was way too close. SEAC reacts with 4 units;
1&2) both 11AF units (fight from Rangoon will move in PBM)
3&4) Indomitable and 3NZ Div +1ASP sail in

For Air/Naval this give me 45 factors so I am guaranteed to score at least he 10 hits I need to sink [Takao]. Takao needs a critical hit so this is his roll.

Activation: Combined Fleet HQ only Logistic Value: 2 Bonus: The Japanese player places the Escort marker on the game turn track on its +2 side or flips the escort marker to its +4 side if the marker is already in play on its +2 side. See Submarine Warfare for effects of this die roll modifier. Remove from play if used as an event.

There is always a Midway moment in EotS. And the situation in Burma is getting very hairy. Might as well get it over with.

4. Takao CA provides valiant cover
110 5/17/2019 11:55:00 PM May-Aug 1942 Allies Play Strategy card as Event #39: 2 / Sextant Conference: Burma Road
This event ends a US inter-service rivalry. Flip the US Inter-Service Rivalry marker to its Strategic Agreement side. If the US Inter-Service Rivalry marker is already on Strategic Agreement side there is no additional effect. Bonus: In addition the Allied player immediately receives 3 Chinese ground and 1 Allied air replacement steps that must be used immediately (cannot be saved) on in supply units. Allied air units can be in the air units in China box. In addition, the Allies may immediately construct the Jarhat Trans Route for no cost. If Jarhat already constructed then either Ledo or Imphal may be constructed. Remove from play if used as an event.

OC: 2 EC: 0

Message from Allies:
As event. Build Jarhat and flip all the Chinese.
109 5/16/2019 10:01:00 AM May-Aug 1942 Japanese Message In my pbm, I send the Takao to Saigon. Won't send file, go ahead with your next move.
108 5/15/2019 8:56:00 PM May-Aug 1942 Allies Message Takao does no damage and gets flipped for his effort.

No rolls needed for ground combat. You score enough to eliminate 3 Ind Corp even at 50% effective and I can't damage 38 Army even with 200% effective.

In my PBM Indomitable goes back to Colombo and Warspite back to Rangoon. Your PBM next for [Takao].

In addition, now that you are back from vacation I will be leaving on vacation. Out from tomorrow afternoon until next Monday. I will have some times with internet access so play should continue but at a slightly delayed rate.

Air/Naval battle at Kuantan.
1st die is JP attacker with 12 factors (but needs a critical hit to do any damage).
2nd die is Brit defenders with 24 factors.
106 5/15/2019 8:48:00 PM May-Aug 1942 Allies Message The defenders get a radio call for help out in time for the Royal Navy to provide some cover. SEAC HQ activates Warspite and Indomitable.

1) Warspite can go 10 spaces from Rangoon to Kuantan (entering from the eastern side).
2) Indomitable from Colombo to 1912 and supports from there.

104 5/15/2019 2:23:00 PM May-Aug 1942 Japanese Play Strategy card as Operations #62: 2 / Kamikaze Attack
Play prior to one battle of the Offensive that is within 11 hexes of Tokyo (3706) and within extended range of a Japanese air unit. The Japanese player eliminates two Allied naval steps (Japanese player's choice, may not eliminate a unit unless there is no other option), while reducing the Japanese air unit whose range was used one step (even if this would eliminate the air unit). No more than one Kamikaze per battle, but more than one Kamikaze per offensive is allowed. Draw One Strategy Card. Remove from play if used as an event.

OC: 4 EC: 0

Message from Japanese:

103 5/14/2019 2:42:00 PM May-Aug 1942 Allies Play Strategy card as Operations #9: 3 / Olympic and Coronet: the Invasion of Japan
Activate: US SW or Central Pacific HQs only. Logistic Value: 12 Conditions: In order for this card to be played as an event at least one Japanese Islands hex must be declared a battle hex and the potential for a ground combat must exist in the designated Japanese Islands battle hex. Bonus: The Allies temporarily gain 4 ASPs that can be used for the duration of this Offensive.

OC: 3 EC: 5

Message from Allies:
Can't use this card yet, hope to see it later. Use it on SEAC HQ for 4 units.
1) [1 Ind Corp] Rangoon to 2007.
2&3) 11AF and 11AF-LRB Calcutta to Rangoon.
4) Warspite Colombo to Rangoon.

Guess I had better not miss any intel rolls. File coming (I assume your 1AD intends to remain at Manila, if not feel free to move him on).
102 5/14/2019 12:01:00 PM May-Aug 1942 Japanese Play Strategy card as Operations #71: 3 / High Altitude Interceptors
2 Air Replacements: The Japanese receive 2 air replacement steps. These steps may be used immediately or recorded as replacement steps for future use. Bonus: Add +1 to Strategic bombing die rolls until the Allies control a supply eligible airbase within 5 hexes of Tokyo. Place the High Altitude Interceptors marker on the game turn track as a reminder. Remove from play if used as an event.

101 5/14/2019 11:50:00 AM May-Aug 1942 Japanese Message I have to say that was one hell of a move! Totally missed that possibility, and I should have attacked Rangoon as my first action.
100 5/13/2019 3:42:00 PM May-Aug 1942 Allies Play Strategy card as Operations #67: 3 / Curtis LeMay: Firebombing of Japan

OC: 3 EC: 0

Message from Allies:
Activate SEAC HQ for 4 units. If the weather isn't good there is no chance to save Rangoon.

1) Hermes from Calcutta to Rangoon. This opens the road and puts everyone back in supply.
2) 3 Aus Corp port to port from Dacca to Rangoon.
3) 33 Brit Corp port to port from Calcutta to Rangoon.
4) 15 Brit Corp from Calcutta to Akyab.

I am now over stacked in Rangoon so [1B Div] and [B Ind Div] are eliminated (can't go to the turn track even though they are currently in supply). No PBM so back to you for the next blow. File coming next.
99 5/13/2019 2:10:00 PM May-Aug 1942 Japanese Message Perfect. In PBM, Shokaku to Palau, 26af to Green Island (4121), 4ad to Kendari.
98 5/13/2019 12:41:00 PM May-Aug 1942 Allies Message The [R Corp] is eliminated as SW HQ goes to the turn track. You can do your PBM next. No log file needed, just let me know where everyone ends up and I'll include it in my next turn.

94 5/10/2019 11:25:00 PM May-Aug 1942 Allies Message Just two small clarifications.
1) you wrote 25AF at Palau but that is a typo it should be 26AF.
2) We have not been keeping the Burma Road track up to date. At the moment the road is closed (no hump no transport route built and Rangoon OOS).

I am sure we will find something else to fix before going to much further.

86 5/10/2019 6:07:00 PM Jan-Apr 1942 Japanese Message Sorry for my sloppiness! Looks good, except for the CN army which by being still OOS I don't think can get a replacement.

My reinforcements:

(31A) and Junyo to Truk, 25af to Palau, 6af to Eniwetok.

Unflip for repls 28A and 15A and Yamato.

85 5/10/2019 4:47:00 PM Jan-Apr 1942 Allies Message Other corrections, Flipped all my units in Philippines and around Singapore then removed your control of Jolo Island which is actually part of the Philippines so still under my control. Also gave you control of all the Australian Mandates.
Now hoping this is all legal here are my reinforcements.
Colombo - Warspite, Indomitable, 3NZ Div.
Calcutta - Hermes, 33Brit Corp, 15Brit Corp, 11AF 11AF LRB
Dacca - 3Aus Corp
Akyab - SEAC Air
Darwin - S Pac HQ, [XIV Corp], 13AF, 13AF LRB
Pt.Moresby - ANZAC HQ, XI Corp, 5AF, 5AF LRB
Nauru (4719) - 10AF LRB
Efate - [I Corp], SF Bd
Esp Santo - Wasp, Miss, N.Carolina, Northampton, 1M Div, M Bd, 1MAW air

In this case I don't think my replacements will have any effect on your placements so I'll do them now;
1Aus Corp
2Aus Corp
Aus Air
Chinese 66 Army
That is all I can use at this time. Will send game file in a minute.

[Kent] to Pt. Moresby
[19 LRB] to Biak
During attrition also flip the 3Ind Corp at Kuantan.
82 5/8/2019 9:31:00 AM Jan-Apr 1942 Japanese Message End of turn stuff:

DEI surrenders, 19lrb needs to eam, will place him in Darwin (Biak is another possibility).

PWill down to 7 for DEI surrender

Attrition: All Aussies flip, as well as 1Ind in Rangoon.

This finishes the turn.

70 5/7/2019 12:47:00 PM Jan-Apr 1942 Allies Message Not much I can do at the moment so I'll take my second pass. I won't bother with a log file for a pass but you will need to make a correction before your next move per the following.

I found an error in the initial setup file sent out by Chris so we had better notify everyone. I have already been corrected by Francisco so the official setup conditions are per the Master list in the V3.1 rules (not the scenario list). Per the Master list the JP 28 Army starts in Bangkok on its reduced strength side. That is NOT how it is currently configured so unless there is another change that everyone but me knows about we need to flip 28 Army.

68 5/7/2019 10:18:00 AM Jan-Apr 1942 Japanese Message Looks good. Anyway I think the key move for you is putting Exeter in Rangoon in the starting ENM. I though this was smart as it prevents a raid into Rangoon wiping out the air and putting the area OOS. But what I did not notice was that it also makes the early attack towards Rangoon very risky, as you can then send Exeter to Batavia to contest the landing.
67 5/7/2019 10:09:00 AM Jan-Apr 1942 Allies Message Sorry for these errors. I don't have a good grasp of the opening play in Burma and didn't appreciate how scripted the play is. The Allies don't really have any options and I misplayed badly (so badly that it really can't be fixed so in the end you will clean out the area with less effort than should have been required). Live and learn, I'll know better next time.

So everyone back to their starting position. The only unit that will move will be the 1 Ind Corp (he is in supply) who will jump into Rangoon joining the unsupplied force. Sending new log file.
66 5/7/2019 9:21:00 AM Jan-Apr 1942 Allies Message You are correct. I was thinking Kunming was active but it isn't (no hump). Will redo a new log file and send it later today.
65 5/7/2019 6:09:00 AM Jan-Apr 1942 Japanese Message I think there is a problem, as the only sea supply line to Rangoon enters the port through an unneutralized JP Azoi. So this means Rangoon is not supply eligible port and therefore cannot be used to comply with the 4mp requirement. I think this also means Kunming is not a supply source so the Chinese armies are oos as well.

No battles so back to you. Log file on the way (I think I forgot to unmark the moved units). Let me know if you see any errors (I seem to be making too many lately).
63 5/6/2019 7:10:00 PM Jan-Apr 1942 Japanese Message Lol we crossposted. Personally I donít like to take any risks as Japan in the opening. That reaction with Exeter at start was a rude awakening!
62 5/6/2019 5:22:00 PM Jan-Apr 1942 Japanese Message Barely making it. I risked this as I needed to try a bit to get back on track.

Move the Dutch division to the corner of the island. Away from keyboard now.
61 5/6/2019 5:22:00 PM Jan-Apr 1942 Allies Message So far you have taken the minor risk options and hit all of them. Not good for the poor Allies. In my first game I was not lucky at Singapore and it was a big pain to fix the problem.
60 5/6/2019 5:15:00 PM Jan-Apr 1942 Allies Message Doing my emergency moves.
Dutch air goes to Singapore.
[Dutch CL] goes to Koepang.
US Asia DD goes to Darwin.

You don't have any PBMs so retreating the J division is your only remaining decision. Just tell me where to put him and I will do the next log file including my next play.
59 5/6/2019 5:09:00 PM Jan-Apr 1942 Allies Message JP scores 150% so the Dutch take a hit and must retreat because they don't . In this case you do make the choice for where the reduced Dutch unit goes.

57 5/6/2019 5:00:00 PM Jan-Apr 1942 Allies Message To clarify the activation path thing ABDA can trace over to hex 2317 on Borneo then south-east to 3021 then due south to Darwin. The path doesn't have to stay on water hexes. Unfortunately for me that doesn't work for supply.

Now on to battles. Battles A, B and D are automatic with the +4 from Tsuji. The Dutch can't do any damage so all 3 armies land and capture their hexes.

We do need die rolls at Tjilatjap.

This is an unusual situation for me (I usually don't get a chance to activate anyone with ABDA HQ). So which option of the many available do I take? I will waste most of this card and activate 1Aus Corp for a port to port move from Darwin to Tjilatjap.

Since I am only moving one guy I'll skip the log file again and bounce it back to you.
51 5/5/2019 9:49:00 AM Jan-Apr 1942 Japanese Message Ok so for my losses, I flip the Dutch CL. In PBM the (Ryujo) goes to Soerabaya, Nachi CA to Miri, Zuiho to Hong Kong. 23af remains in Palembang.
50 5/4/2019 3:58:00 PM Jan-Apr 1942 Allies Message The JP come back after a less that spectacular start. Again 100% so 8 hits flips the Dutch CL (I assume). Allies do their usual 25% and no damage. The [16Army] lands at Batavia.

[Dutch CL] to Tjilatjap.
Dutch air remains at Tjilatjap.

I will put together a log file and send it later this evening.

Message from Allies:
Finally Battle C (Batavia)
JP has 8 factors, Allies have 5. First die is JP second is Allies.
48 5/4/2019 3:50:00 PM Jan-Apr 1942 Allies Message JP gets 100% yield scoring 13 hits, more than enough to eliminate [US Asia CA]. Allies flirt with success but fall just short scoring 2 hits for no damage. The 1SN lands in Soerabaja.

Battle B (Soerabaja)
JP has 13 factors, Allies have 2. First die is JP attacker, second Allied defender.
46 5/4/2019 3:46:00 PM Jan-Apr 1942 Allies Message If this keeps up it will be a long game for the Emperor. JP gets 25% yield for 4 hits which does no damage to the Dutch air. The Dutch score an incredible critical hit flipping 23AF.

Battle A (Tjilatjap)
JP has 16 factors, Allies have 7. First die is JP attacker, second Allied defender.
44 5/4/2019 3:42:00 PM Jan-Apr 1942 Allies Message That was too close for comfort. I marvel at Mark Herman's ability get unit factors just the way he wants to make things work or in this case not work. No matter what I do in this game I always seem to end up one factor short of what I'd like.

So ABDA will activate 4 units: Dutch Air, Dutch CL and both American units. Only one of those can actually move so the US Asia DD sails to Batavia because he must go somewhere to fight even though his measly 2 factors change nothing.

We see you coming so intel will only fail on a natural roll of 9.
42 5/4/2019 10:19:00 AM Jan-Apr 1942 Japanese Play Strategy card as Event #59: 3 / Central Force: Conquest of Borneo
Activation: South or South Seas HQs only. Logistic Value: 5 Paratroopers: Prior to movement place a Japanese control marker in a hex that is within extended range of an active Japanese air unit if (1) the hex is either unoccupied or is occupied solely by a Dutch regiment; and (2) the hex is not within an unneutralized Allied air ZOI. Eliminate the Dutch regiment.

OC: 5 EC: 7

Message from Japanese:
Ok, back into the fray. South HQ activates 6 units

1. 23af drops paratroops in Palembang, moves there and attacks Tjijatjap (A)
2+3. Nachi CA and 1SN invade Soerabaya (B)
4. (Ryujo) to 2420 attacks Soerabaya (B)
5+6. Zuiho and 16A invade Batavia (C)
41 5/4/2019 9:56:00 AM Jan-Apr 1942 Japanese Message I haven't seen ABDA in Tjilatjap in ages... Bad omens indeed!
40 5/2/2019 4:17:00 PM Jan-Apr 1942 Allies Play Strategy card as Event #4: 1 / Arcadia Conference
This event ends a US inter-service rivalry. Flip the US Inter-Service Rivalry marker to its Strategic Agreement side. If the US Inter-Service Rivalry marker is already on Strategic Agreement side there is no additional effect. Bonus: The Allied player receives the ABDA HQ, which is place in any in supply port in Java, Borneo, Sumatra or Celebes. If no such port is available this HQ is removed from play for the remained of the game. Remove from play if used as an event.

Message from Allies:
Sorry I intended to send an updated log file then never got around to doing it.

Let me take my one chance here to drive the narrative. Place ABDA in Tjilatjap. I think this is one of those cases where sending a log file isn't really necessary so back to you for ABDA placement and your next card.
39 5/1/2019 3:31:00 PM Jan-Apr 1942 Japanese Message Im in a location with super lousy wifi so cant email file. If you want you can go ahead and implement your first card with the pbm I just posted.
38 5/1/2019 3:06:00 PM Jan-Apr 1942 Japanese Message Ok so my PBM:

(16A) returns to Davao, (Ryujo) to Hong Kong, 2ad to Bangkok. The rest remain where they are.

Sending file.
37 4/30/2019 3:14:00 AM Jan-Apr 1942 Japanese Message Actually no chance to get to my laptop. Can you send the log with your pbm? I hope to take it up later today.
36 4/30/2019 1:39:00 AM Jan-Apr 1942 Japanese Message Hi so in general what works best for avoiding errors is that after the log the offensives player sends, the reaction player creates another log with his reaction moves plus the resolution of battles and the necessary retreats/enm and reaction pbm, sends that log. Using that the offensives player creates a third log with his own pbm and sends back so now the reaction player is ready for his actvation.

When there are few or no reaction moves one can clarify in acts that no log will be sent. Same with events (wie etc...)

Ill be able to log in in a bit so I can take this one up as everything is already in acts.
35 4/29/2019 11:11:00 PM Jan-Apr 1942 Allies Message I see that you do make the retreat decisions where there are decisions but in this case both of my units are required to retreat into Rangoon. So that completes all of my movement. Is it necessary to do all of the moves or should we just be showing all units in their final positions? Not sure it makes much sense but I'm not familiar with the Vassal procedures.
34 4/29/2019 3:07:00 PM Jan-Apr 1942 Allies Message I think in general I got screwed by the die in that series. JP wins with no damage vs both Allied unit getting flipped. I believe you make the retreat decision so let me know where they are going.

In Post Battle movement the AVG air will go to Dacca and FE air will go to Mandalay. Exeter will return to Rangoon.
33 4/29/2019 3:04:00 PM Jan-Apr 1942 Japanese Message Interesting set of results. Silver lining is to get rid of that Rochefort card. Will probably get back to you after your pbm tomorrow.

I do shoot down the MA air in Singapore. I donít think there is a choice there.

Message from Allies:
That is actually another critical but in this case it doesn't change the result. 15TH Army is flipped before going in.
Now for ground combat.

JP attacker has 10 factors and -2DRM for mixed hex.
Allies have 9 factors and no DRM.
First die is the JP attacker.

Message from Allies:
Finally Battle D (hex 2108). Allies have 13 factors and +4DRM against the 15th Army. With the way the ACTS die roller has been going this one is in doubt.
30 4/29/2019 2:50:00 PM Jan-Apr 1942 Allies Message No. So JP does no damage and Allies win the air/naval battle. The invasion force is turned back.

Message from Allies:
So now I waste a critical. I get all 8 hits which flips Ryujo. JP fires back with 3 factors and no DRM so needs a critical. Are there any 9s left?

Message from Allies:
On to Battle C (Batavia). Allies have 8 total factors and +4DRM. Ryujo is in the hex so I can shoot even without air units.
27 4/29/2019 2:42:00 PM Jan-Apr 1942 Allies Message I can see there are going to be problems with this game. I believe with the critical you have a choice of hitting the air or the ground unit. Can't see why you wouldn't eliminate the MA air unit but it is officially your choice so let me know.

Message from Allies:
Two 50% shots and missed them both. Not encouraging. Allies score all 6 hits for no effect. JP has 36 factors to shot back with and no DRM.

Message from Allies:
Perhaps things will go better at Battle B (Singapore). Again Allies fire first with 6 factors and +4DRM needing critical hit.
24 4/29/2019 2:35:00 PM Jan-Apr 1942 Allies Message That isn't going to get the job done. MacArthur is asleep as he was historically. Allies whiff scoring only 2 hits. JP has 42 factors so no roll needed, can't fail to eliminate the [FEAF] air unit.

Message from Allies:
Will do Battle A (Manila) first. Allies get 4 factors with +4DRM needing critical hit to do any damage.
22 4/29/2019 2:27:00 PM Jan-Apr 1942 Allies Message Will activate SEAC HQ for 4 units moving as follows;
FE air to Rangoon attack 15 Army (battle D)
AVG air at Rangoon attack 15 Army (battle D)
B Ind XX from Rangoon into 2108 (battle D)
Exeter from Rangoon to Batavia (battle C)
21 4/29/2019 12:48:00 PM Jan-Apr 1942 Allies Play Strategy card as Event #12: 2 / Commander Rochefort: HYPO Success - JN25 Code break
Intelligence: Ambush. Bonus: During all battles of this Offensive, the Allied player achieves a critical hit result on all modified air-naval combat die rolls of 9 or greater. Remove from play if used as an event.

Message from Allies:
OK per Francisco it appears I am living in the past with version 3.0 of the rules while everyone else is on version 3.1. So your placements are correct and it is the 15th Army that is attacking. Unfortunately for you Commander Rochefort has been reading your mail so things may not go well. I have several things going on today but I hope to do my response moves and resolve the battles later this evening.
20 4/29/2019 1:46:00 AM Jan-Apr 1942 Japanese Message Hi! I wasnít aware of issue 1, letís see what the answer is in the forum. If there is a different at start position I would have to recheck my attack. Regarding supply to your HQs, yes I see that I do not cut supply to them. As long as the Manila air leves supply can be brought across. Regarding the version issues, there should not be any incompatibility but I will upgrade to the new one anyway. It probably includes some minor tweaks.
19 4/28/2019 10:39:00 PM Jan-Apr 1942 Allies Message Pablo, I have some comments before trying to resolve your attacks.
1) I just posted a question on ComSim about the correct placement of the JP 15 and 38 Armies. The Scenario rules in 17.2 don't agree with the Master List in the V3.0 rules set. Francisco's program agrees with the Master List and not the 17.2 information. This impacts your attack D. We may need GM clarification about this.
2) To make sure I am reading my map correctly, as I see it all of my HQs are in supply with your current placements so if I detect successfully I will be able to chose any one of them for reaction.
3) Not sure this is really important but when I loaded the log file I got a warning message saying that the file had been created with Version 5, revision 3 but I am using Version 5 revision 4 (which is dated April 1 and I just recently downloaded it). Do you know if there is any compatibility problem between the last two revisions?
Let me know what you think.
18 4/28/2019 4:26:00 AM Jan-Apr 1942 Japanese Play Strategy card as Event #47: 3 / VADM Kondo: Conquest of the Dutch East Indies
Activation: South or South Seas HQs only. Logistic Value: 7 Float Plane Tactics: Japanese CA naval units add 2 to their attack strengths for the duration of this Offensive.
