Wray Farrell has responded to my Spiculum questions in that thread I linked. The Spiculum dice count as part of the total battle dice for all purposes except that they hit before the defender can counter....Castra absorbs the first hit, the attacker includes the results in comparing hit totals to determine victor if the the defender survived, and you get the Legacy bonus for barbarian kills from Spiculum dice, including additional bonuses for Triumph and a military emperor.

Up for pendragon with or without a break.

Congrats Michael and well played.
Not sure we can judge the 80 Legacy game from that session. May need another try some time.
Opinions on the expansion?
Ambitus is very good but that was obvious. Spiculum was understandably popular but of course Praetorian Guard is also very good.....difficult choice. I would think that Frumentarii and Forced March are not generally as good as their base game counterparts. Triumph was good....probably better than Damnatio in most cases. I have to say that it would be nice to see all the cards in play but if there's an open option to choose either version, there are some that would never get picked (I can't see myself ever choosing Frumentarii over Foederati if I wanted 3 Blue). As discussed, I think the best option would therefore be Option 2, all cards in play but only one at a time revealed and available for each class of card.
I gave an opinion but I'm not 100% sure about how Spiculum interacts with battle. I've asked the question at BGG and hopefully the designer will chime in soon. Link to the thread is here:
The Populace Emperor is probably the meatiest choice, with massive Legacy gains, the option to combine it with Pretendership (if that's in play) and bloody hard to unseat (although I had overlooked the 2 vote advantage of replacing the Italian governor). I think this really bumps up the utility of yellow. Military emperor looks too vulnerable to me....maybe a short term strategy for the throne if you have the right hand and board position to take big battle gains.
Anyway, I'd like to try it again some time, maybe live so we can try card option 2.
We're in the game of MoV so I'm happy to take a bit of a break (I'm trying to learn Here I Stand, all 44 pages of rulebook!).
I was thinking of more COIN next......are you guys feeling brave enough to tackle Pendragon? Might take a little while to assimilate although we can learn as we go with PBEM. It's taking time because of its complexity but there's a growing opinion that it might be the best of the COIN games. One of my mates who is very COIN experienced is doing it PBEM now and rates it very highly.
|78||5/21/2019 9:48:00 PM||Turn 1||Blue||Message||
Yes, like the change in strategy the new cards bring - SPiculum is fine at the table, but needs some ground rules (and probably a few official rulings) for PBEM. Missed Foedati badly - changed the game a lot - the replacement isn't bad but no where near as good.
Triumph is interesting but only really good if you have a huge army and are hunting Barbarians at home.
I like the emperor types but I think populous is over powered. The immune to mobs is icing on a great cake - who cares if you lose due to the 2 extra votes you can do it all again next turn.
Military is OK, but you would need a risky expedition into barbar land (or have multiple armies at home to bash) before it beats populous in a 4 support province.

all done and dusted final score + emperor turns is as follows:
Green - 74 + 3 = 77
Red - 66 +10 = 76
Yellow - 56 + 6 = 62
Blue - 95 + 6 = 101
Killed Shaun's emperor on the field of battle - took a lot of efforts thanks to that event - the rest was easy.
Good Game Gentlemen! Nice going almost winning without being emperor Shaun!
|76||5/21/2019 9:10:00 PM||Turn 1||Yellow||Message||
Yellow done - long story short fell 1 vote short and Shaun remains emperor and assume he will cross next turn and win.
Thanks guys I do love this game but I only seem to win when I am the pretender, seems that is the game style that suits me.
Its getting the balance right. In the last game I had lots of senate points but kept missing out by 1 vote because I couldn't remove the opponent from the capital (and I dont think there was as many low supported provinces last game to this, plus the 2 point yellow card). This game I have had lots of military but kept failing by 1 point because I couldnt get the senate points required. The game is really on a knife edge, I do like it lots.
Okay new cards awesome once we have some rulings on Spicy, they mix it up and do change strategies and combos. Not sure choosing an Emperor style makes much difference but adds flavour.
Going to 80 probably no difference but the game plays so quick I feel more satisfaction going to 80. 60 seems that bit quick. Would love to hear others thoughts.

Brent and I had a discussion about this earlier and I don't recall you or Shaun chiming in so we came to an agreement of defaulting to two wounds instead of a kill as generally its better.
If Bad omens are in play the odds are skewed towards keeping the full legion (0.5 to 0.1666) otherwise just proceed with the wounds - and pain!
|74||5/21/2019 8:35:00 PM||Turn 1||Yellow||Message||
Quickly did the math and 2 chances of hitting at .33 works out a tiny bit better than 1 chance at .5 but because 6's reroll having 3 chances of getting a 6 is much better than 2. There I assume you want to reduce 2 rather than eliminate 1.
I will proceed but if you have a preference for the longer odds I can redo.
|73||5/21/2019 7:51:00 PM||Turn 1||Yellow||Message||
I have attacked Shauns army in Itallia using Spiculum and scored 2 hits. Do you want to reduce 2 of your 3 legions or do you want to eliminate 1. Let me know before I proceed.
Also I think from the wording on Spiculum I did it wrong earlier. I counted the hits from it in the total number of hits for the battle to determine the winner. I think the way Spicy is worded you shouldn't count those hits as they occur before the actual battle and after them the "battle proceeds normally". If one accepts that then I also think that Castra doesn't effect Spicy attacks but only the attacks that take place during the actual battle. Also Castra is a 2 point card and Spicy a 4 - I feel a 4 should trump a 2.
Secondly, rolled double 6 for Crisis so everyone gets to draw an extra card. Think about which one you want to take before your turn and bring on the pain.

Shaun, I think you took 2 additional Legacy for your military emperor killing the Priest King but he's not a barbarian (he's a cultured cultie). Reduced your Legacy by 2. Upped your Italian support to 4.
Could someone please finish this travesty? I feel like I'm channeling Murray.

no gain in Emperor turns due to priest king, some wins some losses. on 72 for the record so if its a 60pt game I won.
Assuming we are going for 80 though. Left myself vulnerable.
Incidentally - the castra would have stopped that first hit from the spiculum Murray so I would have got a roll with the milita, all done and dusted but the way you were rolling you may not have had any troops left to attack :)
And don't forget I am a populous emperor so you get 2 pt bonus against me when trying to take over in Rome.

|66||5/20/2019 4:28:00 PM||Turn 1||Blue||Message||
It's an 80 legacy game Brent, last turn was as good a turn as I'm ever likely to get and only got 20 so I'm pretty sure we're good for at least another turn.
Shaun and his boots of butt kicking might be closer, unless we run out of barbarians, Mirray has a couple of decent armies, some speculum and also hasn't had a turn.
You on the other hand may have dug yourself an awful hole. Shaun has a big army, running out of barbarians and a military heavy deck. If he (or someone else) pushes you out of Asia you are screwed as Murray looks positioned to take Pannonia and Italia depending on his hand of course. The only saving grace is a general lack of Goverors :)

Interesting end game although I'm sure Michael has it. You could finish it this turn? Do you want to? Depends on your hand and some fine calculation I think.

Spectacular turn there, Michael...worthy of a come form behind win (which I think it will end up being).
You started on 26 Legacy.
I calculate 2 (battle Italia) + 3 (battle Macedonia) + 2 Pretender + 8 (Populace Emperor) + 4 provinces +1 Amphitheatre for 20 Legacy which should put you at 46 (think your marker is at 45 so may need to be moved up 1 unless I've missed something)
|62||5/20/2019 12:02:00 AM||Turn 1||Blue||Message||
A question too, how do Castra and Spiculum interact?
Just one reduction or one against the spiculum and one against the attack. Either would make sense but I don't remember seeing anything about it.

An embarrassing sequence of events in Thracia that we'll just scrub from the history books when we rewrite them.
Shaun, there was a bit of an error in the Legacy calculations from your eastern bloodbath (hardly surprising, difficult to do a body count when there are so many).....you didn't move your marker the full 3 as you crossed the 40 mark and took an extra for Zenobia, who isn't a barbarian (those cancelled each other out) but you also took 6 Legacy for your Galatian battle when it should have been 5, so I dropped you 1 Legacy.

Murray, you took 7 Legacy at the end of your turn and I only counted 4 (3 provinces and a Limes). Were you still counting your Populace emperor who isn't an Emperor? (.....then you woke up and it was only a dream).
I did spot Shaun's attempt to take on too many barbarians (you're the man!). Happy for a reroll....also I don't think you took your bonus for killing Ardashir....probably easiest to just take the increased support in the province.
.....and you're having such fun playing civilians and barbarians (and the barbarians are having such fun playing hide the German sausage with your daughters) that I've sent some Goths to keep you company in Galatia.....well, fate sent them, I can't really claim credit (you must be emitting some sort of barbarian attracting pheromone...think you should see a doctor about that).
|47||5/18/2019 11:32:00 PM||Turn 1||Blue||Message||
you also don't retreat as no one attacked you, might have won that one anyway due to reroll but we'll see.

You might have to re do your turn a bit SHaun, in Syria you can only attack one barbarian army at a time.
On the bright side less chance of your legions being smashed. Probably easiest to just reroll the Barbarian dice, 4 only the nomad does his own thing and won't hang with the Sassnids. Might be better or worse for the security detail.

The puppet of the senate is still on the throne but his support is waning quickly with mobs popping up in Pannonia demanding the return of their goats and the troops in Gallia deserting their posts as the town rises up and demands the people's hero back.
So Shauns tactic of winning by killing all the barbarians is in full effect, 1 Sassy barbar invaded Syria to help him out.
Michael is bidding his time but again Asia Minor is open to be taken away from Brent the Puppet

Actually that would have significantly altered my turn. Recalling a gov and pitching at Rome would be worthwhile against a mob emoperor on 2. 1 for ambitus, 2 for Mob emperor and 1 die is quite doable.
|35||5/16/2019 3:54:00 AM||Turn 1||Red||Message||
Actually problem with your turn, Murray. I should have known it was too good to be true.
In Support Check you should have lost 1 support in Italia, putting you down to 2, because of my army in the capital. Important because you only had 7 Political Points to spend, so no Spiculum for you.
This isn't an easy fix because as Damian selflessly demonstrated for us in a previous game, you can't take back a card buy. Unfortunately this means you redoing your turn with all the same results (Ira Deorum and your hilarious attempt to replace my Asian governor) and a new, corrected purchase phase. Michael will then have to redo his turn with the results he had, so that the logs are valid.

Michael, despite Murray having acquired a speculum (scary thought) I don't think it's the women that are in danger.....but yes, I also suspect unnatural violation of goats is at the top of the new imperial agenda.
Your Lowness, you didn't nominate what sort of emperor you are (apart from depraved and incompetent but we took that as read)....military, populace or old fashioned senate? Different implications for how you gain Legacy and how we unseat you. I think you can just use a Breakaway counter to mark it.
Good point about Spiculum, Michael. Players may make different decisions depending on how many attackers they're facing. Maybe the default should be reduction of 2 Legions but it may not always be the case and if one of us feels differently and that he's about to be attacked, he can nominate ahead of time what he wants to do.

Just a quick aside, but due to how spiculum works it might be a good idea to have a standard reaction with the legions - ie. If attacking a two legion army and rolling two hits do they both get wounded or does one die? lean towards double wounds myself, but maybe we need a consensus or an individual reaction to keep play moving by PBEM.

I raise support in Pannonia. Could you please fix it up in your log? Remove the Limes, increase my Support in Pannonia to 2 (I would have gone to 3 and then lost one) and dock me 1 Legacy.

Michael, Spiculum is very powerful, but it's a 4 pointer. I think the big game changers will be the lower point cards that are easier to access and will influence play more.....Ambitus looks incredible and I think yellow will be a very strong option this game.

Okay, we're using the old Crisis folder in Dropbox. I've tided it up.
I've dropped a random setup log in the folder which isn't a game log and you don't have to watch.....random colours and player order:
Rolled randomly for each class of cards.....5 are new expansion cards:
Red 3- Force March
Red 4 - Spiculum
Blue 3 - Frumentarii
Blue 4 - Triumph
Yellow 2 - Ambitus
I've popped a scan of these 5 cards in the Dropbox folder. When you buy each card of this colour and value, use these alternate Events. The other 4 cards are the original base game text.
I've also put the Expansion rules in the Dropbox.
I know we're supposed to draw our hands first but in the interest of time let's just do it as we start. Let's nominate starting province in order, then I'll set up the map. You first, Shaun
