559 11/3/2019 3:15:00 PM 203-201 BC Rome Message Dang, I forgot about the Truce.

Guess what? You win. I don't have any card that can break the truce, and given the circumstances, I don't think you are going to break it for me.

Check out this very nice hand for carrying out the siege of Syracuse - has everything but a playable event.

Congratulations.

49 1 / Opposing Fleet Breaks Siege
(Both) Remove all accrued siege points at any one port
6 1 / Marharbal's Cavalry
(Carthage) Play during any battle. You may use this card as a Double Envelopment BC which (if matched) does not automatically give the defender the initiative.
39 3 / Minor Campaign
(Both) MOVE ANY TWO GENERALS. Each General can move up to four spaces with 10 combat units.
5 2 / Native Guide
(Both) If you use this card as an OC to move an Army, and the Army crosses a Mountain Pass, you may modify your Mountain Pass Attrition die roll by -3.
25 2 / Capua Sides with Carthage
(Carthage) If the Carthage controls 3 or more Italian provinces Capua is converted to Carthaginian control and all Roman CUs inside are eliminated.
42 1 / Elephant Fright
(Rome) Play if attacked by elephants. They have no effect on you and the Carthaginian player immediately loses two BCs.
17 1 / Surprise Sortie
(Both) Remove 1 Siege Point from any one Walled City
9 3 / Philip Allies with Carthage
(Both) The Roman must randomly discard on Strategy Card. Carthage receives a -1 die roll modifier for Sea Movement. Once Macedonia is at war, this event becomes playable only by Rome and ends the Macedonian alliance.
41 1 / Bad Weather
(Both) Play immediately after opponent has moved but before combat. Contrary to his expectations, his General has only move two spaces - return him to the second space he entered.
558 11/2/2019 1:18:00 AM 203-201 BC Carthage Message well, that's disappointing knowing you know that card is not in my hand

552 10/31/2019 2:24:00 AM 203-201 BC Carthage Message it depends if this last turn is all about Syracuse or not, but I think you may have a slight advantage since you already have Nero in position

and that's before we take into account that you lucked out and drew Marcellus again

naturally, as this is Turn 9, you're probably going to first, but let me look at my cards to make it official
551 10/31/2019 12:46:00 AM 203-201 BC Rome Draw Strategy cards 9 cards drawn.

512 10/15/2019 11:30:00 PM 206-204 BC Carthage Message Marcellus is a consul and may not drop below 5 CUs

You may do essentially the same maneuver, but Scipio is only allowed to pick up a max of 5 CUs

Now 6 in Bruttium.
8 in Rome.
Fabius is still in Bruttium.

I had it in my head that you could place start-of-turn reinforcements anywhere in Italy, because you had to place them before consuls and you had to be sure to make a place where you could play a consul. But I guess the rules mean if you have no generals in Italy, and no consul eligible spaces already, then then any consul in Italy is going to have to go in Rome. Learn something new every day.

Message from Carthage:
If you had swapped the cards, you could still move Scipio and Varro would have suffered less attrition. Granted, Varro would not make it all the way to Massilia, but the two stacks would be adjacent to each other which is a significant deterrent in its own right.

Anyhow, here's my attrition roll for Hasdrubal, on the 7-9 column

With 3 probes, 1 reserve and coverage in all the other suits I had a pretty good hand for Africanus to eek a win in this battle. But Hasdrubal made all his initiative rolls, and indeed I am out of Reserves. Well played.

I really had a poor hand for getting anything done this turn with only a couple 3 ops and no campaigns. Guess I should have been conservative and gotten Africanus off the island, but the potential of the events on my 3-ops seemed too good to use for sailing. But the Messenger really disappointed.

Scipio may avoid to the north on a 4

470 10/11/2019 5:07:00 PM 209-207 BC Rome Message Aw crap. I was under the impression that you had to control one side of the straits to cross (making Africanus only reachable by sail), but apparently that only applies between Italy and Sicily. If I had known that, I would have gone with my original move, as Africanus had nowhere to run.

If you'll excuse the ignorance of the rules, then let's switch back the move. If you want to hold me to it (which is fine, this is a tournament after all) then no cards for me.

Interesting that one cannot intercept across a strait. That actually makes attacking across a straight easier than usual for the attacker, when you'd think it would be harder. Seems like attacking across straits ought to come with a battle card penalty.
