513 10/15/2019 11:48:00 PM 206-204 BC Rome Message Good point. So used to having Marcellus as my proconsul. Yes, lets make it 8 with Africanus, so its 13-11. Any cards for you?
512 10/15/2019 11:30:00 PM 206-204 BC Carthage Message Marcellus is a consul and may not drop below 5 CUs

You may do essentially the same maneuver, but Scipio is only allowed to pick up a max of 5 CUs
511 10/15/2019 9:40:00 PM 206-204 BC Rome Message No intercept possible. Continuing the campaign.

Part 2: Africanus and 3 to Sassari, pick up 7 and attack Hasdrubal in Nuoro. No intercept or withdraw opportunities. No cards for Africanus, so cards will be 15-11, unless you have a card to play.

Hasdrubal to intercept?
509 10/15/2019 9:34:00 PM 206-204 BC Rome Message Marcellus and 3 continue to Oristano (leaving 7 CU in Sassari that still have 1 movement point available for later in the campaign).

I will go ahead and roll to see if Hasdrubal has an intercept option in Oristano.

I forgot you moved all your generals of of Italy

Hasdrubal to intercept, needing a 2
507 10/15/2019 10:02:00 AM 206-204 BC Rome Message OK. The 3 in Bruttium had to go to Rome.
Now 6 in Bruttium.
8 in Rome.
Fabius is still in Bruttium.

I had it in my head that you could place start-of-turn reinforcements anywhere in Italy, because you had to place them before consuls and you had to be sure to make a place where you could play a consul. But I guess the rules mean if you have no generals in Italy, and no consul eligible spaces already, then then any consul in Italy is going to have to go in Rome. Learn something new every day.
506 10/15/2019 9:55:00 AM 206-204 BC Rome Play Strategy card as Event #33: 3 / Major Campaign
(Both) MOVE ANY THREE GENERALS. Each General can move up to four spaces with 10 combat units.

Part 1: Marcellus and 10 sail from Massilia to Sassari. Any weather or intercept before I continue?
505 10/15/2019 9:44:00 AM 206-204 BC Carthage Message you may not reinforce in Bruttium; there's no general there
504 10/15/2019 2:31:00 AM 206-204 BC Carthage Draw Strategy cards 9 cards drawn.

503 10/15/2019 12:08:00 AM 206-204 BC Rome Message Well, I am happy to say that I will be making the first move with a campaign, but I need to think through whether Marcellus will come to Sardinia or Africanus will quit Corsica.

Feel free to draw you cards.
502 10/14/2019 11:49:00 PM 206-204 BC Rome Draw Strategy cards 9 cards drawn.

Consular elections.
498 10/14/2019 11:46:00 PM 209-207 BC Rome Message I wish that it were so, but Varro started from Ariminum and so it took 5 movement points to get to Druentia. The Native Guide only had enough to get Varro into the mountains, but not over. So I had to use the cards inefficiently.

Roman Reinforements:
2 in Aleria with Africanus, now 3.
3 in Bruttium, now 9.

Nero remains as proconsul.
497 10/14/2019 3:53:00 PM 209-207 BC Carthage Message Carthaginian reinforcements

2 CUs to Mago/Gisgo (to 7)
1 CU to Hasdrubal (to 8)
496 10/14/2019 3:50:00 PM 209-207 BC Carthage Message Hasdrubal loses 2 and in the 8-10 province count, lose Sitifis (E Numidia) and Thabraca (Carthaginia)

Message from Carthage:
If you had swapped the cards, you could still move Scipio and Varro would have suffered less attrition. Granted, Varro would not make it all the way to Massilia, but the two stacks would be adjacent to each other which is a significant deterrent in its own right.

Anyhow, here's my attrition roll for Hasdrubal, on the 7-9 column
494 10/13/2019 11:39:00 PM 209-207 BC Rome Play Strategy card as Operations #5: 2 / Native Guide
(Both) If you use this card as an OC to move an Army, and the Army crosses a Mountain Pass, you may modify your Mountain Pass Attrition die roll by -3.

Message from Rome:
Finally (and this is going to seem a little weird, given my last move), I will play this for Ops to move Africanus and 1 across the straits to Aleria. (Super conservative, but it makes Bad Weather another saving throw.)

Over to you for end of turn actions which include attrition of for Hasdurbal and political consequences for 10-8 province count.
493 10/13/2019 11:32:00 PM 209-207 BC Rome Message Ouch, but I can take it as long as the luck gods give me some compensation down the road. :-)

Varro loses three and finishes in Massilia, which now has 15.

491 10/13/2019 11:30:00 PM 209-207 BC Rome Play Strategy card as Event #23: 3 / Numidian Ally
(Rome) Place up to three Roman PCs in Eastern Numidia in spaces which do not contain enemy CUs. If the space contains a Carthaginian PC, the PC is simply flipped.

Message from Rome:
Second, here is the 3 op that I used to refill Sicilia.

The 1op Forced March card that is technically still in my hand is already in the discard pile, and I will use that now for the event.

Varro and 8 leave Ariminum, pick up the 1 CU in Mutina, continue to Taurini, pick up that 1 CU (now 10) and force march across the Alps into Durentia, finishing in Massila (where Paulus and 8 reside). I will roll for Alps attrition.
490 10/13/2019 11:26:00 PM 209-207 BC Rome Message OK, got my board updated. Here we go ...

First, remove Gergovia and Tolosa for consequences of the lost battle.
489 10/13/2019 5:13:00 AM 209-207 BC Carthage Message don't forget to remove two control markers

488 10/13/2019 2:12:00 AM 209-207 BC Carthage Message outside of the Doubles, I had another balanced hand of two Flanks each, so it would've been difficult to determine your weak side
487 10/12/2019 10:41:00 PM 209-207 BC Rome Message Wow. 1 loss for battle and 3 for retreat. Africanus is not dead yet. He retreats with 1 to Sassari (and probably needs a campaign next turn.

Hasdrubal has 9 in Nuoro, and at least will take some attrition at the end of the turn.

Now to think about how to play my last two cards.

1st die = battle loses on 5 column.
2nd die = retreat losses, +2 modifier.
485 10/12/2019 10:37:00 PM 209-207 BC Rome Message Yeah, well statistically you should have 3 DE. :-)

With 3 probes, 1 reserve and coverage in all the other suits I had a pretty good hand for Africanus to eek a win in this battle. But Hasdrubal made all his initiative rolls, and indeed I am out of Reserves. Well played.

I really had a poor hand for getting anything done this turn with only a couple 3 ops and no campaigns. Guess I should have been conservative and gotten Africanus off the island, but the potential of the events on my 3-ops seemed too good to use for sailing. But the Messenger really disappointed.

Here come the casualty rolls.

472 10/11/2019 7:39:00 PM 209-207 BC Rome Message Thanks. Africanus will fight. Cards are 13 to 10.
471 10/11/2019 5:54:00 PM 209-207 BC Carthage Message ok, so that means you're taking back the Force March and restoring control of Sicily with the 3-op, right?

that means Scipio is still in Nuoro

assuming that's the case, obviously my card doesn't change
Scipio may avoid to the north on a 4

470 10/11/2019 5:07:00 PM 209-207 BC Rome Message Aw crap. I was under the impression that you had to control one side of the straits to cross (making Africanus only reachable by sail), but apparently that only applies between Italy and Sicily. If I had known that, I would have gone with my original move, as Africanus had nowhere to run.

If you'll excuse the ignorance of the rules, then let's switch back the move. If you want to hold me to it (which is fine, this is a tournament after all) then no cards for me.

Interesting that one cannot intercept across a strait. That actually makes attacking across a straight easier than usual for the attacker, when you'd think it would be harder. Seems like attacking across straits ought to come with a battle card penalty.

you may go first
431 10/4/2019 11:11:00 PM 209-207 BC Rome Message Thanks for spotting the error. In log 331 we see the real mistake was that I thought Marcellus was in Massilia, rather than Rhone, and so I thought the reinforcement was legal. Later, I likewise thought Longus was intercepting from Massilia, leaving 1 behind in that space.

For the correction, raise the CU in Bruttium. (At the time, Varro may have been in unfriendly Boii.)

Thanks again for the sportsmanlike resolution.
430 10/4/2019 8:11:00 PM 209-207 BC Carthage Message although where you "move" your CU should presumably not matter, I'll wait for you to place it before announcing initiative
429 10/4/2019 8:09:00 PM 209-207 BC Carthage Draw Strategy cards 9 cards drawn.

428 10/4/2019 8:09:00 PM 209-207 BC Carthage Message I show 8 CUs in Massilia and 1 in Rhone, which was technically illegal, but easily fixed.

Marcellus moved to Rhone in log entry 328 and then added a CU with a 3-op later for a total of 11. Longus intercepted out of Rhone with a maximum of 10 CUs, leaving 1 in Rhone behind.

*However*, the reinforcement of Rhone should not have occurred because a 3-op reinforcement must be in a friendly-controlled province, and no one controls Transalpinia. The simple fix is for you to raise that troop somewhere else, either in Bruttium or Mutina.

Then, you will have 8 CUs in Massilia and none in Rhone.

Message from Carthage:
no Probe, surprised you didn't open with it
battle losses only as Mago has no retreat
416 10/3/2019 3:59:00 PM 211-210 BC Rome Message Geez. I am a little stupid. Even though that battle went well for me, there is a small but definitely non-zero chance that you could kill Africanus at the beginning of next turn.
415 10/3/2019 3:54:00 PM 211-210 BC Rome Play Battle card #13 Flank Left

Message from Rome:
Here is an FL to run you out of cards. So battle losses for Africanus will either be on the 6 column or the 7-9 column, depending on whether you matched the probe.

Then it looks to me like
no isolation
attrition for Africanus (forgot to factor that in when I attacked),
provinces at 10-8 for political consequences.

My board says you have some CUs scattered in Spain from a while ago. As a check, can you please remind me how many CUs you have in which spaces? Thanks.

Message from Rome:
I doubt you will match the Probe, since you probably would have played one already if you had one, but here is an initiative roll for Mago just in case.
