236 7/17/2019 9:21:00 PM Sep-Dec 1942 Japanese Message I have a lot of options here, but will simply have South Seas HQ activate the CL Tenryu in Kwajalein and send it to Jaluit. With no allied air or naval support, this turns back the invasion and compels the Mariner Brigade to retreat.

The CL then returns to Kwajalein.

Marcus Is. is safe, as there is no Japanese air ZoI over that hex to permit a Special Reaction Roll.

The other 2 hexes are permitted to make SR rolls. EC=5 with -2drm for entering a Japanese air ZoI, so 0-7 is required to create a battle hex.

233 7/17/2019 5:31:00 PM Sep-Dec 1942 Allies Message Move adapted. See new vlog
232 7/16/2019 4:58:00 PM Sep-Dec 1942 Allies Message Ok. I will have to review the move a little.
SO with 2 AAs on 2 islands I need to move 1 CV + 1 ground to the 1st island. Then I can send a ground alone to the 2nd island as the ZOI is neutralized.
If I then place 2 CVs in range of the 2 islands, do I need to specify which AA they support or can I decide that only when you manage to declare one of them as battle hex. If I need to allocate them before hand I could end up allocating them to one island and having you react on the other;

I will finish the move tomorrow. I am travelling right now.
231 7/15/2019 5:15:00 PM Sep-Dec 1942 Japanese Message You only need one CV to escort the ground unit to the invasion hex. After that you may move additional CV units into position to support the AA should a battle develop there, as they can be declared in support of the AA.

And yes, you want the BB units IN the potential battle hex. They could remain with the CV units outside of the potential battle hex and they would then be able to absorb hits to protect the carrier from being eliminated, but they contribute their attack factors to the battle ONLY if they are IN the battle hex.
230 7/15/2019 5:11:00 PM Sep-Dec 1942 Japanese Message The sequence of moves for your operation is important.

First, the Marine units may not make their amphibious assault move until the Japanese air ZoI has been neutralized. They may move with a CV unit to the battle hex to do so, with the CV unit remaining in the hex. Both the CV and the ground unit must start their move from the same port. The CV unit may declare an attack against another hex during the combat declaration, or it may be declared as "supporting the AA" and will participate in any battle that may occur in that hex. Should the invasion hex become a battle hex, the CV would have to participate in that battle as any unit IN a battle hex MUST fight in that battle.

Or...a CV (from any port) could first move to project an air ZoI over the islands, but it must then declare an attack against an enemy unit in range. It may not end its move in an open sea hex without being committed to an attack against an enemy unit.

Note that CV units moving WITH ground units on an AA have more options.

229 7/15/2019 4:23:00 PM Sep-Dec 1942 Allies Message I need some advice here.
Should I place the BBs with the CVs or in the island hexes to cover the landing in cas you create one or more battle hexes and send your units in those hexes.

Also, not sure if I need to declare where the CVs will support a battle?

227 7/15/2019 3:30:00 PM Sep-Dec 1942 Japanese Message No, the air units conduct air/naval combat only.

If the opponent has no air/naval units in the battle hex, then the air/naval attack is made against any ground units in the hex, but such an attack may not eliminate the last ground step in a battle hex.

No PBM, so done.

Each side has its own set of problems to solve. The Japanese must be very aggressive early, when they have the material advantage. 1943 sees them lose that advantage as the allies approach parity, then by the end of 1943 the allies are ready to go on the offensive.

212 7/11/2019 3:37:00 PM Sep-Dec 1942 Japanese Message A quick note regarding the infamous rule 9.2.F.4.

Since the allies have no naval units at Buna, the Japanese can apply their hits to both allied air units there even if the react out of the battle hex.
If, however, the allies ALSO send a naval unit into the battle hex with a reaction move, then the Japanese will be limited to applying hits to only one of the allied air units.
