111 6/27/2019 9:09:00 AM Turn 3 CSA Message ok, fair enough... anything else you want to try?
110 6/27/2019 7:36:00 AM Turn 3 Union Message Sorry for the delay - been out gaming again :)

OK, so those surrender rules make it even easier to run cavalry round behind my lines. So I do have to spend an enormous amount of actions to try to surround you?

I will not get any reinforcements this coming turn so I cannot garrison all of my resource spaces, and I have real no prospect of attempting to surround you in the next 2 turns?

I think you can probably tell I have little to no enthusiasm in doing that.

So I lose again on or around turns 5 to 6 because I am behind the benchmark number :(

The CSA cavalry in the staff game did sometimes operate independently but didn't ever cross the Ohio that I can recall. Mainly they were stacked with more senior officers to make avoiding/intercepting easier.

I read through the game posts up until about turn 10 when the bickering made it tiresome to follow. The Confederates won easily in the end.
109 6/25/2019 8:27:00 PM Turn 3 CSA Message I also think I've misunderstood the surrender rule... if a unit has a path to source of provisions, it doesnt roll for surrender... a source of provisions is basically any hex not next to enemy SP... so, if no enemy are around, an adjacent hex could be a source of provisions... so, cavalry running around wouldn't have to roll for surrender unless surrounded by enemy SP
108 6/25/2019 8:06:00 PM Turn 3 CSA Message I just realized I think I've been doing something wrong... CSA VPs come from controlling northern Objective Hexes... those are spaces in with grey borders... they are NOT every space with black dots, as I think I've been playing it.... ugh!

I just noted that Union reinforcements also have to go in these Objective Hexes initially...
107 6/25/2019 1:30:00 PM Turn 3 CSA Message ok, sorry it's not more enjoyable for you :(

there are some things the Union can do against cav raids...

1) take some of those early reinforcements and string them out at intervals along the north where they can either guard spaces, or, be within reaction distance... maybe even put entrenchments with some of them... there aren't actually a great many objective hexes within one cav movement from the other side of the river (it is an extra +2 to cross those big Union controlled rivers), so the Union can garrison many of those, and if the CSA telegraphs where they might go, can move others closer...

2) Push the CSA out of the Border States... VPs gained in the north will fade (Fading Glory) if the CSA doesn't control any border spaces... eventually those VP will peter out... the CSA is rarely going to win from cav units taking VPs in the north, unless the Union is abnormally static for a long time... It's ok for the Union to get behind a bit if they are setting up for their own invasions south... they can make up the BPs... The Union is not going to win a military victory this early in the war, but they can form the foundation for when they are stronger

3) where possible go where the CSA isn't... even if Turns 2 or 3, the Union can send out little SP forces and take some coastal spaces... and if the cards are there, even try for some coastal forts... if the Union has a foothold somewhere, they can threaten to move out from there and take some of those BPs in the southern hinterland

if you want to switch sides, and try your own raids, I could try some of these tactics as the Union...

otherwise, perfectly fine if it just doesn't seem like your game...

what else would you like to try?
106 6/25/2019 1:10:00 PM Turn 3 Union Message Sorry Jeff but I think I am calling it a day there and putting this game in the 'not for me' pile.

Seems to me to be a ridiculous situation, I have to hope you fail to evade otherwise I spend all of my resources chasing two tiny cavalry commands. If you do evade, which you have done so far every time, I fall behind the benchmark number.

So the entire game is decided on 2 SPs of CSA cavalry, and the ability to roll a 7 on two dice.
105 6/25/2019 1:00:00 PM Turn 3 CSA Message just narrowly avoids losing the SP... in your file, you can move Stuart back one and mark him as demoralized

Message from CSA:
it does seem like raiding into the north may be easier than it should, and I wondered if I missed something... I think i have...

first, foraging units only have the -1 shift on defense, not attacking, which helps me... but, I think I need to be rolling for surrender with these units north of the big river, as I cannot trace an LOC across an enemy navigable river (13.6.1)

so, this roll is for my last phase, with a +2 for Stuart
67 6/24/2019 1:22:00 PM Turn 2 Union Message McClellan will use 2 actions, regroup all 5 SPs from Washington and attack Manassas Junction.

Avoid battle or fight.

I suppose McDowell has no option but to chase Stuart, I have to say this part of the game seems a little ridiculous to me. Stuart did indeed raid behind the Union lines but these rules allow him - or any other cavalry general, to raid hundreds of miles behind the lines without any restrictions.

Stuart avoids again?
66 6/24/2019 1:03:00 PM Turn 2 CSA Message oh, wait, I got a 9, which is also 1 star.... tied, so I still retreat, but I am not demoralized... and neither are you
65 6/24/2019 1:00:00 PM Turn 2 CSA Message grrr.... Johnston catches McClellan napping and blows a golden opportunity

CSA gets a 7 which is 1 diamond... Union gets 8 which is 1 star...

so, we both lose 1, but I retreat back to Manassas and am demoralized

54 6/24/2019 12:15:00 PM Turn 2 Union Message Hmm, OK, the problem is the US seems to have so little they can do in the early turns, whatever advantage they may have seems to vanish in the first 3 turns. It seems to me the CSA has plenty of time to prepare and gain the momentum?

It doesn't help that the US generals are all crap!
53 6/24/2019 12:11:00 PM Turn 2 CSA Message if you enter Kentucky, it becomes friendly to me, and I would control the towns and Objective spaces in the state

45 6/24/2019 10:09:00 AM Turn 2 CSA Message while I was looking at that, I realized I forgot something else as I usually do with my cavalry raid into the north last time... from 17.2.4, there is an inherent 0 SP garrison in every Northern Objective Hex...
44 6/24/2019 10:01:00 AM Turn 2 CSA Message from 17.3, when the Union gets an SP through Training, the SP is supposed to go in "friendly-controlled Objective Hex in a Northern State"... so, not in Grafton... do you want to put it somewhere else, or redo things?
