76 7/19/2019 9:31:00 AM August 1914 Allies Message Any luck yet?
75 7/11/2019 7:19:00 PM August 1914 Allies Message Since it is your last card play of the turn, maybe you could play it and then catch up in the game aide later?

Then I can do my last play and the end of turn stuff and we would be ready to go when your computer issue is resolved.

The game aide isn't really needed for tournament play anyway...
74 7/11/2019 4:13:00 PM August 1914 Central Powers Message Sorry! I'm having computer troubles again. I've talked to the GM to make him aware. I'm working on it as fast as I can.
73 7/10/2019 7:22:00 PM August 1914 Allies Message Won't hurt to get another card play into today. ;-)
72 7/10/2019 7:21:00 PM August 1914 Allies Message Actually, bad math, we should be thru 13 cards each, but still not a real problem. We can catch up...
71 7/10/2019 7:10:00 PM August 1914 Allies Play Strategy card as Event #13: 4 / Rape of Belgium
May only be played if CP played "Guns of August." May only be played as an Event if the Allied War Status is still at Mobilization. Subtract 1 VP.

War Status increased to 2

Message from Allies:

I thought you might have Landwehr up your sleeve, so I had better get this out of the way...
70 7/10/2019 7:09:00 PM August 1914 Allies Message So far you've played...

CP1 GOA event
CP2 AH7 reinf for ops
CP3 GE10 reinf of ops
CP4 Oberost event
CP5 Landwehr event

I like to list the turn and pulse on my card plays -- it makes looking back a lot easier.

So, you are up for your CP6 and the end of the turn. You have to ask yourself -- ops or RP's? Do you feel lucky?

On the moves, to get thru 120 cards in 90 days, we should average 1.33 cards per day, i.e about 7 cards each so far. We are at five so not a huge deal, but need to try to make at least one card play a day and two don't hurt...
69 7/10/2019 3:02:00 PM August 1914 Central Powers Play Strategy card as Event #5: 2 / Landwehr
CP player receives 2 extra RPs to immediately flip supplied reduced strength German units to their full strength side. They may not be spent to replace eliminated units. May not be played if Berlin is AL controlled or out of supply.

Message from Central Powers:

67 7/10/2019 9:34:00 AM August 1914 Allies Message We need to get moving a little faster if we want to make the three month deadline for finishing...
66 7/8/2019 4:28:00 PM August 1914 Allies Play Strategy card as Replacement Points #2: 4 / Blockade
Subtract 1 VP during the War Status Phase of each Winter turn.

Replacement points: A: 1, BR: 2, FR: 2, IT: 1, RU: 3

Message from Allies:

You are correct on WS -- 2 for GoA and one for Oberst. None for AP.
65 7/8/2019 2:26:00 PM August 1914 Central Powers Message Can I get a war status check? I have CP at 3 and AP at 0. Is that correct?
64 7/8/2019 2:25:00 PM August 1914 Central Powers Play Strategy card as Event #11: 2 / Oberost
German units may now attack spaces containing RU forts. (They may always besiege such spaces). May still be played for War Status after CP War Status is 4 or higher.

Since I've been messing with my computer all week trying to make things work, I'm a bit rusty, but I believe, as the defender, you'll be making all of our rolls.
48 7/3/2019 4:13:00 PM August 1914 Central Powers Message I'm running Vassal through Parallels Desktop. It seems to be working for now. And thanks for the Vassal file! That's perfect. I'm at work right now, but I'll try and get a move to you ASAP.
47 7/3/2019 3:59:00 PM August 1914 Allies Message Great! What was the fix?
46 7/3/2019 1:43:00 PM August 1914 Central Powers Message Or whatever you use. You can send me Cyberbox , too. I'm using Parallels so that I can run a PC on my Mac.
45 7/3/2019 1:41:00 PM August 1914 Central Powers Message Would you mind sending me your Vassal file? That way I don't have to replay mine from scratch. petersbenjaminjohn@gmail.com.
44 7/3/2019 8:59:00 AM August 1914 Central Powers Message Back in business! I'll have a move to you later today.
43 7/2/2019 11:42:00 AM August 1914 Central Powers Message Yeah. I tried Cyberboard. It's PC only though, so I had to try it through an emulator, which also doesn't work currently on the macos Beta. So that was a no go. And then I found a mac wineskin version of Cyberboard, but that also doesn't work on the beta. I think my next step will be to install virtualbox and load Cyberboard that way.
42 7/2/2019 11:30:00 AM August 1914 Allies Message Have you ever tried CyberBoard? To tell you the truth, I like it better than VASSAL (probably just because I'm more used to it, though.)
41 7/2/2019 11:02:00 AM August 1914 Central Powers Message I've tried everything. Reinstall. VM ware. Command line install. Basically, for work I had to update to the new macos Beta, and it broke my Java. I'm in convo with the Vassal tech guys to try and fix it. They'll have to fix it come Sept anyway when macos Catilina comes up. I'll keep working on it though. Hopefully, have a fix by the end of the week.
40 7/1/2019 10:30:00 PM August 1914 Allies Message Incidentally my trip was canceled so I am in battery for the foreseeable future.
39 7/1/2019 10:20:00 PM August 1914 Allies Message Try and uninstall/reinstall VASSAL. Also make sure you have the latest version of it and Java...
38 7/1/2019 1:00:00 PM August 1914 Central Powers Message Sorry! I updated my Macbook and Vassal is no longer working. I've posted the error in the Vassal tech support forum and am waiting for a solution. I'll keep you posted unless I figure out another solution.
37 6/30/2019 12:35:00 PM August 1914 Allies Message You are right, it goes thru Sarajevo.

It will be later today before I can make a move, so take your time on yours...
36 6/30/2019 8:54:00 AM August 1914 Central Powers Message (AHc) retreats to Czernowitz.
Thanks for the OOS Warning, but maybe I'm not understanding Supply correctly. Can't Novi Sad trace supply to Breslau even if Timisvar is lost?
35 6/29/2019 4:15:00 PM August 1914 Allies Message After you retreat the AHc, it's your T1 CP2.

You executed my attacks exactly correctly, well done...
34 6/29/2019 4:14:00 PM August 1914 Allies Message Agreed on supply warnings.

At Timisvar, the AHc goes to the EB (Eliminated Box)and the gap it leaves creates a supply warning for Novi Sad.

AH3 takes 5 hits. It goes to the EB and is replaced by an (AHc)-- the parentheses in this case means the AH corps has been flipped. This equals 5 hits.

The (AHc) must retreat two spaces, your choice. It can "double-back" but can't re-enter the space it came from. For instance, it could retreat thru Stanislaw to Czernowitz. (I am not saying this is a good idea, it's just for an example)

The RU3 advances into Tarnopol.

The abbreviations for the various nations is what is on their RP counters: GE, AH, FR, BR, SB, RU, etc.

The German 7th Army would be GE7 and if reduced (GE7)
A German corps is GEc and if reduced (GEc)

RB is Reserve Box. Since an AHc came out to repl the AH3, the AHC in the RB are at (3,0) which means 3 full-strength and 0 reduced.

Right now, the British corps are at (1,0,BEFc)
33 6/29/2019 1:09:00 PM August 1914 Central Powers Message Oh yeah, and let's play with OOS warnings.
32 6/29/2019 1:02:00 PM August 1914 Central Powers Message AH3A eliminated. You can move into Tarnopol.

Ok. Let me know if that seems correct to you. Also, I'm still learning all of the abbreviations that people us on ACTS, so any help in that regard would be appreciated as well.

For Timisvar. SB1A first, then AHC.
27 6/29/2019 10:20:00 AM August 1914 Allies Message I want to explain a couple things...

First, I just got back from MonsterCom last night; I will be good for one or two moves per day for the next few days, then I will be travelling Jul 9-10, but I should be able to do one move from my hotel room in the evenings, After that, I am good for one or two moves a day nearly always.

I tend to be a bit wordy in my move;, it is a personal thing and I don't expect it from my opponents. It's because ACTS is the official record of each match and I want it to be clear.

The convention is that the defender rolls for the attacker's flank attacks (which prevents misunderstandings that can occasionally occur.) Then he rolls for the attacks, after playing any c/c.

Finally, supply warnings mean that if a player makes a move that creates an OOS situation for his opponent, he has to warn him. If he doesn't, he is not allowed to take advantage of it on his next move. Shall we play with supply warnings? It is highly recommended...

Thanks for all the help, by the way. I really appreciate it.
23 6/28/2019 10:50:00 AM August 1914 Central Powers Message I'll make my move in a bit, but I wanted to let you know that I don't know how supply warnings work. What are they?
22 6/27/2019 11:20:00 PM August 1914 Allies Message Also, we should play with supply warnings, the gamemasters strongly recommend this. Do you know how these work?
21 6/27/2019 11:18:00 PM August 1914 Allies Message 7/2

No damage to GE. You may advance as you wish then I will do my AP1.

Sedan combat, attk dr 1sr

CP 15A vs AP 5A

The conventions are as follows:

--The defender rolls the dice after playing c/c (this speeds play.)

--The attacker dr is always first.

--If the wrong number of dice are rolled, a complete reroll is done.

19 6/27/2019 11:03:00 PM August 1914 Allies Play Strategy card as Combat #6: 2 / Withdrawal
Defending units negate one required Corps step loss and instead must retreat 1 space. Full strength Attacking units may advance. If no Corps step(s) lost, an Army step loss may be negated. See rule 12.6 for details.

Message from Allies:
You have it right. I will pay this as a combat card, then go an roll the combat.

Make sure you use the correct VASSAL scenario, WBC Historical Variant 2013. It will have all the correct trenches, VP spaces, etc.
18 6/27/2019 10:54:00 AM August 1914 Central Powers Play Strategy card as Event #1: 3 / Guns of August
May only be played in the first Action Round of the August 1914 turn. The Liege fort is destroyed. Place the GE 1st and 2nd Armies in the Liege space. The GE 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Armies are activated for Combat.

War Status increased to 2

Message from Central Powers:
Ok. So from what I can tell of this scenario, as it loads into Vassal, this is THE first move to make. So here we go!
GE 1/2/3 Attack FR 5 @ Sedan
17 6/27/2019 10:26:00 AM August 1914 Allies Message You did it right -- the convention is that the CP player, who moves first, always does the MO rolls just before his first move.

If you ever forget to, it's not a big deal, I will just roll before I resolve your first attack (or if there's no attack, before my first move.)

If by any chance we both roll, whichever gets recorded first in ACT takes priority.

You rolled TU/IT. I don't have my rule book with me but am pretty sure that is none/none. A good roll for us both...

14 6/27/2019 12:12:00 AM August 1914 Allies Message The AP is mine for a bid of one. We are already on the correct side in ACTS, so I will draw my cards and wait for your opening move.

How about we do the VASSAL file at the end of each game turn for reconciliation?

Time for me to draw cards...
13 6/26/2019 1:37:00 PM August 1914 Central Powers Draw Strategy cards
12 6/26/2019 1:36:00 PM August 1914 Central Powers Message Nice! Ok. I'm not going to outbid you. You can have 'em! I'm familiar with Vassal, so I'll probably use that to track the board, but I'm fine with only passing it back and forth every action round or so. Alternately, do you have a better way to do it? What do you prefer? I'll get you a draw and first turn later today.
11 6/26/2019 12:24:00 PM August 1914 Allies Message Believe me, I have plenty of experience in getting destroyed at PoG! My win-loss record is pretty poor. ;-)

So, are you going to out bid me for the Allies? If not, we are ready to start -- you can draw cards and send me your first move as the CP in ACTS. Also in VASSAL if you want to use it...

The convention is that the attacker designates his moves/combats and sends it to the defender, who then decides whether to play a combat card before the dice are rolled...
10 6/26/2019 10:55:00 AM August 1914 Central Powers Message Oh yeah, don't hesitate to destroy me! That's always the best way to learn.
9 6/26/2019 10:47:00 AM August 1914 Allies Message I will counter with a bid of one for the Allies.

Gotcha on being new and as I said, I will play to win but I will do my best to guide you and be somewhat of a mentor at the same time...
8 6/26/2019 7:38:00 AM August 1914 Central Powers Message Just to reiterate, this is my first tournament game, so let me know if I do something wrong or goof up.

Message from Allies:
I really like the Consimworld convention -- it is a reasonably short drive from where I live and is lots of fun. It is mainly for monster games, but the are all kinds of other games being played too. I am playing ASL Blood Reef Tarawa with an old buddy.

I will play to win, but I will also do my best to help you out as I can. I have played something like 20 games of PoG over the last 4-5 years.

I am fine with VASSAL, either every action round or once a turn for board reconciliation, or somewhere in between.

You didn't specify who the dr would select, so I will reroll -- 1-3 I bid first or 4-6 you bid first.

3 6/25/2019 10:59:00 AM August 1914 Central Powers Message Hi Forrest! I live in Denver, CO and am looking forward to our game as well. That's really cool that you're at the WorldConSim convention. How is it?
So, I won't lie, I'm new to the whole ACTS, competitive board game scene. I've played Paths of Glory, but only solo. So feel free to correct any mistakes I make--ACTS, PoG, or otherwise. The good news is that this should be an easy round for you.

Anyway, I'll roll for bidding and then we can dive in a little more deeply on Saturday.

Also, were you wanting to use Vassal or just ACTS? How do you normally like to play?
2 6/25/2019 10:29:00 AM August 1914 Allies Message Good morning, Ben. My name is Forrest metz, I live in Victorville, CA. Looking forward to our game and good luck in it!

I am at the WorldConSim convention in Tempe at the moment and will be busy until Saturday, but we can bid for sides before then. You can roll for who goes first in the bidding if you like and we'll go from there...
1 6/25/2019 9:29:00 AM August 1914 Moderator Message Welcome to Round Two of the BPA VIII Paths of Glory Tournament!

Most have been through this before (many times now!) so you probably know what to do: I'll be your game moderator and should be your first point of contact for any issues related to this match. My overriding priority for this match is to make sure it's fun and fair for both players. That means sportsmanship is expected at all times and issues are to be resolved equitably.

Contacting the Moderator: I am currently in Thailand (GMT +7) but will be in UK for at least some of this game. I am usually online at least twice a day and thus will generally respond to all match questions within 24 hours. If you need to contact me, e-mail me directly at "paulhubbard@hotmail.co.uk" referencing your match # when you do so. ACTS does not send the moderators all posted messages and as we all have multiple games to moderate, we do not read through the logs of individual games with any regularity so direct contact is needed. Unless of a confidential nature, please ALSO CC your opponent and put your question/issue in the log and I'll make sure I post a response there as well. If I do not respond within 48 hours, please ask one of the other GMs (Tom: gregorit@yahoo.com or Michael: mdauer92@yahoo.com).

Issue Resolution: If either player has a concern about a particular ruling or resolution I make, feel free to escalate to the other GMs. I will also discuss with Tom and Michael if there's something I'm not sure of. Please remember that the ACTS logs are viewable for all, direct exchanges with your opponent are obviously permitted but GMs will view the ACTS logs as the authoritative record of the game.

Getting Started: Here are my thoughts on how to get the match started:

- Introduce yourselves and set expectations regarding your availability and game pace.
- Agree on the scenario. The default is the WBC Historical Scenario as described on the POG Tournament Page and I strongly recommend its usage.
- Agree on usage of supply warnings. They are strongly recommended.
- There is no mandatory usage of a particular PBEM tool. VASSAL is recommended but not necessary and exchanging game logs is also optional.
- Bid for sides. (Initial bidder is to be random, one of you just roll a die with a 50-50 shot of that player bidding first). Switch sides in ACTS if necessary. If you do switch sides yourselves, remember to LOG OUT of ACTS completely to avoid danger of drawing your opponent's cards.
- Draw cards. CP will then kick off the fun by rolling the turn 1 MO and playing their first card.

The official launch date for this round is Wednesday 26 June when Tom will send out a round robin to all but feel free to start your match immediately. This round is scheduled to complete on October 30, giving 126 days to complete. Please keep each other informed and if you will be offline for any extended periods, and if you fall behind schedule then some extra effort may be needed to catch up. The GMs all HATE to have to adjudicate unfinished games but we will where necessary and a slow player will almost always be deemed to be the loser.

Play well, keep up the pace and, above all, Have Fun!

Paul
