Entry # Time Turn Player Title Entry
71 10/20/2019 2:02:00 PM 217 BC Carthage Play Strategy card as Event #33: 3 / Major Campaign
(Both) MOVE ANY THREE GENERALS. Each General can move up to four spaces with 10 combat units.

Message from Carthage:
Iíll play this for the Event. The first general to be activated is Hannibal, who will march thru Boii (unless you intercept) to the Appennines pass and thence to Pisae.

Will you attempt an interception?

AlsoIím trying to make sure I understand the rules applicable to neutral tribes. If I move onto a neutral tribeís space, I have to stop and move no farther, correct? And this is true even if I would have a sufficient margin to overrun it if it were an enemy CU?

If I donít care to subjugate it, though, I would be free to continue moving the next turn? Also, one isnít subject to an attrition role for moving through a neutral tribeís space?
70 10/19/2019 10:44:00 AM 217 BC Carthage Message Mike, I'm leaving this morning on an out-of-town trip through next Wednesday evening, but will try and get my move out when I reach the hotel tonight.
69 10/18/2019 12:24:00 AM 217 BC Rome Message 1. It would not block you from crossing the path. It would however force a battle in that spot and you wouldnít be able to move any further after the resolution of the battle.

2. Yes, he is tagging along.

2.
68 10/17/2019 11:20:00 PM 217 BC Carthage Message Two Question:

1. Does the presence of your force at Pisae block me from proceeding through the pass over the Appenines, or does it just serve to block my retreat in the event of a defeat?

2. Does Longinus stay with Flaminius?

67 10/14/2019 11:03:00 AM 217 BC Rome Play Strategy card as Event #63: 3 / Force March (any general)
(Both) Move any General up to six spaces.

Message from Rome:
Move Flaminius through Rome to Tarquinii to Cosa and to Pisae. Drop two CU in Pisae. Move back to Cosa and drop one CU. Move back to Tarquinii to finish move. Flaminius will have 5 men in Tarquinii.
66 10/13/2019 12:01:00 AM 217 BC Carthage Play Strategy card as Event #27: 2 / I have come into Italy ...
(Carthage) Play if Hannibal is in Italy. Convert two Roman non-walled PCs into Carthaginian PCs in any space in Italy which does not contain Roman CUs.

Message from Carthage:
I'll use this to convert Pisae and Faesulae.
65 10/8/2019 11:00:00 AM 217 BC Rome Play Strategy card as Operations #2: 3 / Sicilia Revolts
(Both) If your opponent has control of Sicily, remove all his non-walled PCs in that province which are not stacked with his CUs.

Message from Rome:
Move Flaminius from Rhegium to Capua.

Yes manpower is one of Rome's greatest strengths along with ease of naval movement. It's essentially their only two advantages until Africanus comes into play.
64 10/7/2019 11:32:00 PM 217 BC Carthage Play Strategy card as Operations #46: 3 / Allied Auxiliaries (Samnium)
(Rome) Place two Roman CUs with any General in Italy if SAMNIUM is Roman controlled.

Message from Carthage:
Inspired by Hannibal's success in crossing the Alps, local Gallic recruits flock to his camp outside of Taurini, allowing him to add 1 CU and make good the losses from his mountainous trek.

(There sure do seem to be a lot of Roman reinforcement cards!)
63 10/7/2019 10:42:00 AM 217 BC Rome Play Strategy card as Operations #26: 3 / Syracuse Allies with Carthage
(Carthage) You immediately gain control of Syracuse (any Roman units inside are eliminated. Syracuse provides a -1 modifier for Sea Movement

Message from Rome:
I'll recruit a troop with Paulus.
62 10/5/2019 10:01:00 PM 217 BC Carthage Message Hannibal and his force encounter surprisingly salubrious conditions in the Alps -- could the planet be warming? I'll remove 1 CU.
61 10/5/2019 10:00:00 PM 217 BC Carthage Die roll request Request: 6-sided die x 1

1

Message from Carthage:
An attrition die roll, for crossing the Alps.

60 10/5/2019 10:00:00 PM 217 BC Carthage Play Strategy card as Operations #32: 1 / Numidian Allies Desert
(Both) Play at the start of any Combat in Africa. Your opponent does not receive any BC bonuses for control of either Western or Eastern Numidia.

Message from Carthage:
Now let's try that for Operations.
59 10/5/2019 9:59:00 PM 217 BC Carthage Return Strategy card to hand #32: 1 / Numidian Allies Desert

Message from Carthage:
I'm returning this to my hand, because I didn't mean to play it for the Event.

58 10/5/2019 9:58:00 PM 217 BC Carthage Play Strategy card as Event #32: 1 / Numidian Allies Desert
(Both) Play at the start of any Combat in Africa. Your opponent does not receive any BC bonuses for control of either Western or Eastern Numidia.

Message from Carthage:
My apologies for taking so long to respond. I was under deadline pressure on a matter at work last week and was also battling that nasty virus that's been going around. I hope you don't get it -- I'm still not over it.

So I'll play this to activate Hannibal and march him through Druentia; across the Alps; and then to Taurini with 8 CUs and the 2 CU-e's, while leaving Hannibal Gisgo behind with 1 CU in Rhone.
57 9/29/2019 11:21:00 PM 217 BC Rome Play Strategy card as Event #47: 3 / Allied Auxiliaries (Lucania)
(Rome) Place two Roman CUs with any General in Italy if LUCANIA is Roman controlled.

Message from Rome:
2 CU to Paulus for 15 total.
56 9/29/2019 11:13:00 PM 217 BC Rome Message I would just put in the area of the table and try to remember whats its for.
55 9/29/2019 11:00:00 PM 217 BC Carthage Play Strategy card as Event #29: 2 / Carthaginian Naval Victory
(Carthage) For the rest of the year a -1 die roll modifier for naval movement applies, and Roman Naval Movement is limited to Minor or Major Campaign Strategy Cards.

Message from Carthage:
Thanks for your thoughts on that.

So, I'll play this for the Event. Carthaginian spirits are boosted by a rare naval victory over the Romans!

P.S. I've been having trouble adding the PC markers to the Carthaginian Naval Movement Table -- the module consistently rejects my efforts to just move a PC there and place it. Is there some special technique that must be used?
54 9/26/2019 11:17:00 PM 217 BC Rome Message It is typically a question I wrestle with over essentially every turn. There is no clear consensus best thing to do, very board position specific and what cards you hold.
53 9/26/2019 11:16:00 PM 217 BC Rome Message It really depends on what you need/want to do. If you feel comfortable with your position and don't feel moving first will lend an advantage, I would pass. But if you are in a precarious position or feel like you want to seize the initiative on the turn you would go first. Another thing to keep in mind is that there are cards in the deck that either force a discard or steal your opponents strategy card. Most players do not like having their opponent play cards unopposed so they will allow the other player to go to reduce that chance.
52 9/26/2019 10:24:00 PM 217 BC Carthage Message I've noticed, in reviewing game logs, that players often pass on the chance to move first. I'm not yet sure what the pluses of doing so are, although there must be some. But I'll choose to go first. I have to go to bed now, but will endeavor to get a move out tomorrow night.
51 9/26/2019 10:19:00 PM 217 BC Carthage Draw Strategy cards 7 cards drawn.

50 9/26/2019 10:21:00 AM 217 BC Rome Message I will not preempt you. You may decide who goes first.
49 9/26/2019 10:19:00 AM 217 BC Rome Draw Strategy cards 7 cards drawn.

48 9/26/2019 10:18:00 AM 217 BC Rome Message 2nd Consul is Paulus. I will place Paulus with the army in Mutina and Flaminius will control the army in Rhegium.
47 9/26/2019 10:17:00 AM 217 BC Rome Die roll request Request: 6-sided die x 1

6

Message from Rome:
Ok, first consul is Flaminius. This roll will be for 2nd consul.

1- P. Scipio
2- Fabius
2-Marcellus
4-Nero
5-Varro
6- Paulus
46 9/26/2019 10:16:00 AM 217 BC Rome Die roll request Request: 7-sided die x 1

2

Message from Rome:
I will keep Longus as my Proconsul. This die roll will be for my first consul.

1- P. Scipio
2- Flaminius
3-Fabius
4-Marcellus
5-Nero
6-Varro
7-Paulus
45 9/26/2019 10:13:00 AM 217 BC Rome Message I will place all 5 with the army in Mutina to bring them to a total of 13 CU.
44 9/26/2019 6:05:00 AM 217 BC Carthage Message So, my reinforcements will now be placed as follows:

Carthage - 1
New Carthage - 2
At Hannibal's camp on the Rhone - 1

43 9/23/2019 9:16:00 AM 218 BC Rome End Turn
42 9/23/2019 9:16:00 AM 218 BC Rome Message OK, so my PC in Gergovia is isolated and there is no attrition. Province Count 9-9 no removal of PC's. Go ahead and place reinforcements.
41 9/22/2019 10:56:00 AM 218 BC Carthage Message Thanks for cutting me some slack on that. I'll chose instead to return that 1 CU of Balearic slingers to the pool, and will march with Hannibal, Gisgo, and 8 CUs and 2 CU-e's to Rhone.

40 9/21/2019 11:48:00 PM 218 BC Rome Message Go ahead and replay the card. Just state what you wanted to do instead no need to recall the card or anything
39 9/21/2019 11:49:00 AM 218 BC Carthage Message I'm tempted to ask for a newbie mulligan on that last move, but I have to concede it's clearly stated in the rules. I'm not sure why it didn't register. Sometimes painful lessons are the best teachers.

I'll place my new CU's as follows:

Carthage - 1
New Carthage - 2
Hannibal at Tarraco - 1

38 9/19/2019 11:32:00 PM 218 BC Rome Message And before we end turn and draw new cards, outline your reinforcements and then I will place mine and elect my new consuls.
37 9/19/2019 11:29:00 PM 218 BC Rome Message Ok, so my PC in Gergovia is isolated but so are your PC's in Rhone and Druentia. The mountain passes block off your connection to the tribes in Gallia Cisalpinia. And the provinces I believe is 9-9. You own 4 provinces in Spain and 4 in Africa and 1 in Italy with Gallia Cisalpinia. No need to remove your PC!
36 9/19/2019 11:06:00 PM 218 BC Carthage Message
So then we move to the final phases of the turn.

Winter Attrition Phase: No one is affected.

Political Isolation Removal Phase: It appears that your PC in Gergovia is isloated and must be removed.

Victory Check: It appears that you control 9 politically significant provinces to my 8, so I have to remove PC. I will remove Salaria in Spain.

If you agree that the above is correct, we can advance the turn marker and draw our next round of cards.

35 9/19/2019 10:47:00 PM 218 BC Carthage Play Strategy card as Event #11: 1 / Balearic Slingers
(Both) If you control the Balearic Islands, place one CU in any Port containing a friendly PC and no enemy CUs.

Message from Carthage:
I'll play this for the Event, and add 1 CU in Tarraco.
34 9/17/2019 11:20:00 AM 218 BC Rome Play Strategy card as Operations #1: 3 / Corsica and Sardinia Revolt
(Both) If your opponent has control of Corsica/Sardinia, remove all his PCs in that province which are not stacked with his CUs.

Message from Rome:
P. Scipio moves to Mutina.
33 9/17/2019 12:10:00 AM 218 BC Carthage Message I also have two questions.

1. How do Generals get killed in the game?

2. Are there any ways that you can flip PCs other than (a) playing a card that allows you to do so or (b) causing them to be cut off by the end of the year?

As I understand it, absent one of the two occurrences above, an opposing force can sit on top of an enemy PC for essentially forever without forcing a change of allegiance, although that seems odd.

32 9/17/2019 12:07:00 AM 218 BC Carthage Message That would certainly be enough.
31 9/17/2019 12:07:00 AM 218 BC Carthage Die roll request Request: 6-sided die x 1

2

Message from Carthage:
I believe the naval move by Hasdrubal automatically succeeds because there are total DRMs of -5 (-1 for Alliance with Phillip, -2 + -2 for the two port modifiers).

30 9/17/2019 12:06:00 AM 218 BC Carthage Play Strategy card as Event #34: 3 / Major Campaign
(Both) MOVE ANY THREE GENERALS. Each General can move up to four spaces with 10 combat units.

Message from Carthage:
My apologies for the delay -- I was out of town over the weekend.

I'll play this for the event.

- Mago will move with 2 CU's from Saguntum to New Carthage.
- Hasdrubal will do a naval move with 2 CU's from New Carthage to Carthage.
- Hannibal and Hasdrubal Gisgo will march with their 8 CU's and 2 CU-e's through Dertosa to Tarraco.

29 9/12/2019 1:45:00 AM 218 BC Rome Play Strategy card as Operations #41: 1 / Bad Weather
(Both) Play immediately after opponent has moved but before combat. Contrary to his expectations, his General has only move two spaces - return him to the second space he entered.

Message from Rome:
PC in Gergovia

Message from Rome:
replay of this card with same result of PC in Tolosa.

Message from Rome:

Message from Rome:
Returning to hand for random discard
24 9/11/2019 9:19:00 AM 218 BC Rome Message Yes, my apologies. I will recall my last card and then discard a random card and then replay my turn
23 9/10/2019 11:33:00 PM 218 BC Carthage Message Mike, I believe you still need to discard a Strategy Card based on my last card play.
22 9/8/2019 10:58:00 AM 218 BC Rome Message Nice job on the recall too you did it perfectly.
21 9/8/2019 10:57:00 AM 218 BC Rome Play Strategy card as Operations #42: 1 / Elephant Fright
(Rome) Play if attacked by elephants. They have no effect on you and the Carthaginian player immediately loses two BCs.

Message from Rome:
PC in Tolosa
20 9/7/2019 9:02:00 PM 218 BC Carthage Play Strategy card as Operations #9: 3 / Philip Allies with Carthage
(Both) The Roman must randomly discard on Strategy Card. Carthage receives a -1 die roll modifier for Sea Movement. Once Macedonia is at war, this event becomes playable only by Rome and ends the Macedonian alliance.

Message from Carthage:
And now as Operations.
19 9/7/2019 9:02:00 PM 218 BC Carthage Return Strategy card to hand #9: 3 / Philip Allies with Carthage

Message from Carthage:
Step Two.
18 9/7/2019 9:01:00 PM 218 BC Carthage Move permanently removed Strategy card to discard pile #9: 3 / Philip Allies with Carthage

Message from Carthage:
Oh, I see.
17 9/7/2019 2:27:00 PM 218 BC Rome Message Please recall that card and play as operations. If you play it as the event I will be unable to use it later in the game.

The result will stay the same.
16 9/7/2019 11:19:00 AM 218 BC Carthage Play Strategy card as Event #9: 3 / Philip Allies with Carthage
(Both) The Roman must randomly discard on Strategy Card. Carthage receives a -1 die roll modifier for Sea Movement. Once Macedonia is at war, this event becomes playable only by Rome and ends the Macedonian alliance.

Message from Carthage:
Philip V joins the fight!

15 9/6/2019 12:19:00 AM 218 BC Rome Play Strategy card as Operations #21: 2 / Mercenaries Desert
(Rome) The Carthaginian player must use the Attrition Table for all his forces on the map not in friendly walled city spaces. Units with Generals are exempt if a separate die roll <= the General's Battle Rating.

Message from Rome:
Move Longus and entire stack to Rhegium.
14 9/5/2019 11:58:00 PM 218 BC Carthage Play Strategy card as Operations #39: 3 / Minor Campaign

11 9/3/2019 11:17:00 PM 218 BC Rome Play Strategy card as Operations #30: 3 / Carthaginian Siege Train
(Carthage) Place the Siege Train Marker with any Carthaginian General. A General with the Siege Train ignores the -1 die roll modifier applied against Carthaginian sieges.

Message from Rome:
PC's in Mutina, Verona, Emporiae.
10 9/3/2019 10:20:00 PM 218 BC Carthage Play Strategy card as Operations #40: 3 / Minor Campaign
(Both) MOVE ANY TWO GENERALS. Each General can move up to four spaces with 10 combat units.

Message from Carthage:
I'll begin by playing this to place 3 PC markers, as follows:

- Dertosa
- Tarraco
- Ilerda

Move file will follow.
9 9/2/2019 11:17:00 PM 218 BC Carthage Message OK. I've finished reading the rules, and should be able to make my first move tomorrow evening. The only question I have so far is:

- Under what circumstances does the presence of enemy CUs in a space cause a PC marker there to be converted (Rule 19.2)?

Does it happen automatically if a space is occupied by enemy CUs at the end of their movement? I'm gathering both that (a) this isn't something you can do in the normal course of movement and (b) there is no need to expend a movement point or anything to do this (as in some games).

8 8/30/2019 9:41:00 AM 218 BC Rome Message Yes, it is pretty intuitive. Most things will be apparent and then after a few plays you will get some of the nuance.
7 8/29/2019 10:46:00 PM 218 BC Carthage Message Just an update. I'm about halfway through the rules, and hope to finish soon. So far, it all seems pretty intuitive, and I like the relative simplicity.
6 8/24/2019 10:46:00 PM 218 BC Rome Message It's alright. Just make your first move or let me know if you'd like Rome to go first. Let me know if you have questions
5 8/24/2019 8:52:00 PM 218 BC Carthage Message My apologies for being off the grid -- I had to travel out of town for most of this past week, and then storms delayed my return for another day.

4 8/15/2019 1:18:00 AM 218 BC Rome Message no trouble you can ask me whatever questions you have as well. I will not be playing a Campaign Card to go first, you may decide who plays the first card.
3 8/15/2019 1:17:00 AM 218 BC Rome Draw Strategy cards 7 cards drawn.

2 8/15/2019 12:12:00 AM 218 BC Carthage Draw Strategy cards 7 cards drawn.

1 8/15/2019 12:11:00 AM 218 BC Carthage Message I'll opt for the Carthaginians. I'll probably need a few days to refresh myself on the rules, though.
