834 12/22/2019 8:17:00 AM May-Aug 1945 Japanese Message Merry Christmas!
833 12/22/2019 4:25:00 AM May-Aug 1945 Allies Message Some thoughts -
Burma - I should have been more aggressive there. However none of the larger SEAC offensives appeared. Those I did get were all restricted to air/ground.

Elsewhere - leaving Midway open was a mistake, It left my Political Will very vulnerable. I could have lost much earlier if your cards had fallen right. Basically I could not afford to fail Progress of the War or risk getting wiped out. I was therefore (over) cautious. I definitely needed to fight more land battles. However you were very good at putting strong garrisons in the right places (Hollandia, Rabaul, Truk) to make an assault difficult. I was also a bit short of US infantry due to 2 corps being on the turn track. With hindsight I should have used ANZAC and the Aus/NZ's more as they are expendable.

I was lucky with Political Will cards, plus 2 draws of "Woodlark" at good times. I was short of good Offensive Cards (No Phillipines, No Olympic, Only 1 big surprise card)

Interesting game which I enjoyed

Have a good Christmas

- Marc
832 12/21/2019 7:08:00 PM May-Aug 1945 Japanese Message In any case, a very well played game. You did quite well as the Allies. I can't really say you made a mistake (although leaving Midway open is something I find Allied players do in order to bring in the 7AF to New Guinea).

Perhaps a bit more aggression was needed in Turns 8-10, but otherwise you were able to capitalize on the holes I left in my defense in the early and mid game. Capturing Wewak and bypassing the Owen Stanley mountain range was an excellent coup, not to mention exploiting the hole in the inner defense perimeter and taking Uluthi.

There was perhaps also too much Passivity in Burma. There were a lot of Commonwealth steps that could have captured overland progress of war hexes and bled Japanese armies. I think there were two or three turns were you didn't use ground replacements at all.

I don't think you needed an amazing hand. But definitely at least 3 or 4 military event cards. I think An allied player really needs to be ashore by the final card play of Turn 11 if they're going to win by invasion. I think I would have bypassed Iwo Jima entirely, I might have tried landing in Osaka since only Kyoto needs to be pinned. You could likely execute a second landing during Turn 12 while the ground forces spread out from Osaka.
831 12/21/2019 1:02:00 PM May-Aug 1945 Japanese Message I would like to say that being stuck in ISR nearly the entire game is a rare occurrence, but it's the SECOND time it's happened to me as Japan in this Tournament. And I have only played Japan twice so far.

I'm sad to hear your card magic abandoned you on Turn 12. That is quite possibly the most awful Hand I have seen for an Invasion of Japan.

Oh and never mind my whining. I do it all the time. Win or lose. As for the game, I think you needed to be more aggressive. Especially once 1944 starts you have to accept more losses as along as you can kill more Japanese Air and naval units.

In my first Japanese game I think I managed to annihilate maybe 20 to 24 Allied naval steps but my air and naval force was utterly destroyed in the process. Sure the rest of the USN was noticeably smaller but they roamed the seas at will.

I also think you should have based the Royal Navy reinforcements in the Pacific. A good Anzac Event would have allowed the participation of the strong carrier and battleship forces. There was nothing for them to do in Asia.

I also think you should have been more aggressive attempting to cut off Burma. You only used air but you should have used Indomitable and Warspite in the initial attack. In general I was able to mostly extract ground forces from untenable locations. As the Allies I might have tried to isolate units in Rabaul, Hollandia and Eniwetok rather than let them evacuate and fight later in Saipan and Japan. At least make it harder for them to pull out.

Thanks for the words on my defense. Having experienced ISR as Japan for the entire mid and end game in my previous tournament game I decided to hedge against it this game by concentrating mostly Army/Army Air in Burma and Navy in the Pacific. Only a few IJA air to enable ground reaction cover of the army units and placing army divisions in ports and setting up brigade/cruiser reaction combos that could reinforce an occupied island if necessary. Under ISR beating back invasions is primarily the navy's responsibility.

Can you comment on the aspects of my defense you found particularly troublesome? I personally thought the fall of Uluthi was a blunder on my part. I should have occupied it with a ground unit and I miscalculated because it was the only hex that wasn't in range of a Kamikaze. However the blunder was mitigated by the fact that you didn't really capitalize on it by leapfrogging further.

I had the War In Europe luck but you had the ISR and PW luck. I also had Kamikaze luck. It seriously deterred you from attacking in strength beyond Allied Air support.

830 12/21/2019 12:45:00 PM May-Aug 1945 Japanese Message I definitely lucked out in drawing all three Japanese Air replacement cards in the game. Hey one JN-25,probably reserved for the actual invasion. Ha-Go for a possible counter attack against a landing. War in Europe to bring back the last 4 ground units into Japan proper.

No Weather nor ISR ender. Not that it matters at this stage of the game.
829 12/21/2019 12:42:00 PM May-Aug 1945 Japanese Message This was my hand:

827 12/21/2019 12:35:00 PM May-Aug 1945 Japanese Message One miss and one hit. That's 2 discards, the B-29s don't suffer losses thanks to the base at Iwo Jima.

I will draw 4 cards just to see what you would have come up with.

825 12/21/2019 11:06:00 AM May-Aug 1945 Allies Message Interesting game, accepted by some odd card runs. You were stuck in isr for an incredible amount of time, plus had awful intercept rolls and very few intercept cards. I was frequently short of attack strength.

3 China Offensives is a bit over the top ! I needed a couple of good Offensive Cards

823 12/21/2019 10:31:00 AM May-Aug 1945 Allies Message and that is Operation Brewer (logistic value 1). The rest are either 1 or 2 OC cards

I could get ashore, but there is no way I can clear the main Japanese island.

I thought I was going to struggle to win this turn as you have set up a good quality defense and I have not pushed the attack hard enough. However the hand is so useless that there is no point trying :-)

Thanks for the game, most enjoyable and good luck in the next round :-)
