768 12/29/2019 10:59:00 AM May-Aug 1945 Japanese Message Hi Chris - Agree it was a lot of fun. Games rarely get this far, as Japan has either won or conceded by now.

The unopposed Japanese WiE events in 1942 slowed the Allied counter offensives a bit, but along with a couple of disasters in CBI ground combat the Japanese failed to make any headway toward Rangoon.

I had a sense that the allies were not being aggressive enough in late 1943 and into 1944. Once 1944 arrives the Japanese air and naval forces are usually dispatched quickly. I was very fortunate in that I either had the response cards or die rolls I needed to react to allied operations. I was able to eliminate a lot of US units in small battles and avoided a major disaster in the two or three really big battles we had.

Very rare to see both CV Akagi and CV Shokaku still in action on turn 12. The failure of the allies to make more progress in 1944 in reducing the IJN and recovering resource hexes caught up to them in 1945.
767 12/29/2019 9:39:00 AM May-Aug 1945 Allies Message No need to continue. I concede. I needed both attacks to succeed in order to keep going because with the remaining cards I have it won't be possible to win otherwise.

Great game! And very well played, Tom. I had a really terrible hand in turn 8 (I think) and my momentum never really got going again. I've never had such trouble gaining ground once 1944 gets started and you worked a very vigorous defense to make it hard to accomplish *anything* in the final 5 turns. You managed a JP survival victory without ever taking the CBI, which is remarkable.

Fortunately, that was my first loss, so maybe I'll see you again across the virtual table again before this tournament is done. =)

Good luck in Round 4!

766 12/29/2019 9:28:00 AM May-Aug 1945 Japanese Message Allies get 10 hits and Japanese get 8 hits.
Neither result is enough to damage a unit in the battle.

Japanese win the air/naval battle and turn back the invasion.

Eliminating the CA has merit, as that is the last Japanese naval unit with inherent transport capability for the marines while eliminating the air unit would give you a +2drm in the ground battle.

Ground combat must wait for that decision from the allies.

742 12/27/2019 11:31:00 AM May-Aug 1945 Japanese Message Overthinking is what I do best! I now have a notebook where I make notes for my EotS operations so I can remember the priorities and not get lost in the details. My usual oversight would be to forget about the attack in Japan and believe that Combined Fleet HQ could not react because it was not in range of Miri or Singapore.

Note: Jolo goes with the Philippines, so is allied controlled.
Tarakan is OOS since it is more than 4MP from Miri and allied air ZoI control the adjacent sea hexes.

Transfer the hit assigned to [CV Shokaku] to [CVL Amagi]

Japanese PBM
[BB Hiei] to Singapore
[BB Yamato] and [CV Shokaku] to Seoul
741 12/27/2019 9:20:00 AM May-Aug 1945 Allies Message By my read, you win even without the transfer. Eliminating the 3 big carriers leaves you with 9+9+8+6 which adds up to 32. You've left me with 31, so that is a JP win.

I read through the same rule sections, and I would say the transfer happens before A/N victor determination (it's part of 9.2.F, after all). I've never played the 1st edition of this game, so I always thought it worked that way.

The worst part is, this was never supposed to happen. 7AF LRB was supposed to pin Saipan and I forgot to add it in in the final writeup. I worked on this attack sequence (and the overall plan) for basically a day and a half, way overthinking it, of course, and ultimately ended up crippling it because I forgot the reasons why I was doing certain things in later iterations. Sigh. It is what it is.

This probably decided the game, because I don't think I have enough cards to get the last 4 resource hexes now. But let's keep going, there have been enough unpredictable swings in this game that I still have a sliver of hope for the allies.

I'll flip BB Yamato and elim the 3 big carriers ([CV Taiho], [CV Soryu], [CV Shokaku])

You're up for PBM.
740 12/26/2019 7:08:00 PM May-Aug 1945 Japanese Message By my math, the Japanese will win the air/naval battle if they are able to transfer an CV hit to the CVL.

The allies have 8+20+3=31 factors (FRU) after combat.

After the allies flip the BB Yamato, the best use of the remaining 37 hits is to eliminate the [23rd AF], [BB Hiei] and [CV Shokaku]. This would leave the Japanese with 29 attack factors for an allied win.

But, if the Japanese are able to transfer the CV step loss from the CV Shokaku to the CVL Amagi then the Japanese will have 32 attack factors for a Japanese victory.

My reading of the current sequence of play leads me to believe the later is the case, but of course my mind WOULD read it that way. Let me know what you think about all this.

Either way, it sure is an EXCITING as we near the end.
739 12/26/2019 11:13:00 AM May-Aug 1945 Japanese Message One final note, and it might matter. The Japanese will sacrifice the CVL Amagi to save the CV Shokaku if you eliminate it. In the previous set of rules this replacement was made after the winner of the air/naval battle had been determined. Reading that section now I am no longer certain of that.

Again, it could make the difference in victor here.
738 12/26/2019 11:00:00 AM May-Aug 1945 Japanese Message Japanese score a x1 result for 64 hits.
28 hits to flip the BB and CA
10 hits to flip the 11th AF
14 hits to flip the CV B.H. Richard.
12 hits to eliminate the CA Alaska.

I am reasonably sure you have 55 hits to allocate.

Allies flip the BB Yamato for 18 hits and have 37 more to allocate. You could use 36 of them to eliminate the three big CVs or 34 to eliminate two of them and the air unit at Miri.

I believe you win the air/naval battle no matter which way you do it, which upsets me no end! When I went through the numbers I thought I had committed enough factors to have 14 factors left after flipping all your units, enough to eliminate the CV and win the battle. I think I used the CAs attack value instead of its defense value when crunching the numbers.

So I will stop here and let you verify the result and allocate your hits to the Japanese units before I continue to the Ground combat.

Allies use Operation Olympus and Coronet for the Evacuation of Japan?! The logical explanation is that they won the lottery and have good reason to expect a Soviet invasion of Manchuria. Rather than fight to the death in Japan we must again look to secure the Empire!
