206 11/11/2019 8:52:00 AM Turn 4 USA Message Actually, log #99 has Hascall f4 at that point, so I think that they were both f1 at the end of last turn, so no B/W for either Hascall or Cox.
205 11/11/2019 8:50:00 AM Turn 4 USA Message I stand corrected.
Thanks.
I will not use the automatic recovery feature any more so things should be smoother.

201 11/11/2019 7:00:00 AM Turn 4 USA Message I realize it was definitely my mistake using the automatic "recovery" feature when it didn't work correctly. I thought doing a recap would be easier to check, but apparently I was wrong - sorry about that.
I think we are good with one exception: at the end of turn 3, in Gann it was Cox who was f0 while Hascall was f1, therefore Cox has the B/W.
I will proceed.
200 11/11/2019 12:34:00 AM Turn 4 CSA Message Frankly, the onus is on you to step through the journal - which is the *sole* official record - if not from the beginning, then from end T1 or T2.

Re-read messages: #173 (27/10), #185 (28/10) and #194-5 (29/10) where I specifically clarified the few minor entrenchment issues and emphasized no fatigue or disorg on map.

(By the way, your previous post contains way too much redundant info for me to make head or tail of it.)

Be advised, the chess clock is ticking but take until the end of the month if you like...

(At some point, I may then agree to switch to live Vassal if the game continues to flounder..)
199 11/9/2019 4:09:00 PM Turn 4 USA Message At last, I have gone through all the files and I think I have it sorted out.
However, I think we need to verify before proceeding, painful as that is. I was using the automatic recovery feature, and it has not been working correctly as I have discovered.
Anyway, here is what I have. Please verify before we proceed to make sure we both are fighting the same battle!
I'll go from right to left.

Whew. I think that's everyone. Please check carefully, we'll sort out any discrepancies, and then it's back to the action.
Sorry again for the delay.
198 11/7/2019 6:30:00 AM Turn 4 USA Message Ugh - sorry for the continued delay.
I'm sure I will be able to get back to it by Saturday at the latest.
197 11/3/2019 8:36:00 PM Turn 4 USA Message The weekend got busier than I thought. I haven't forgotten - will return to the action before long.
196 10/30/2019 9:46:00 PM Turn 4 USA Message Sorry for the delay - I'm a teacher and we're nearing the end of the term, so things are a bit crazy right now. At least we're three turns ahead of everyone else!
Should be able to get back to it by the weekend.

My construction is in Journal.
193 10/29/2019 6:51:00 PM Turn 4 USA Message Hmm - it appears the VASSAL recovery function has some bugs.
I just went back and checked a couple of things. At the end of turn 2, for instance, Wood, Hascall and Cox were all f4. After I did recovery, Hascall was labeled as f1 (correct), but Cox and Wood were both f0. Apparently that's why they got Breastworks even though they should have just gone to f0/organized.
I think I'll have to go back and check everything manually, and then we should compare. So far I don't think it has caused any actual problems with what has happened, but it could!
Let me know what you think.

191 10/29/2019 6:10:00 PM Turn 4 CSA Message Hascall may be ok - he was F0 and it seems a unit can simultaneously recover from Demoralizion and build, but some other units you mentioned were F1.

190 10/29/2019 5:55:00 PM Turn 4 USA Message I think that's it for entrenchments. I'm using the automatic recovery feature in VASSAL, so it all happens simultaneously.

Leader transfer:
Sherman and Hooker to 1416 with Geary and Stanley.
I think that's it. Over to you for leader transfer and initiative.
Just verifying - that was Hannon (CV 1) in 1412, correct?
189 10/29/2019 5:46:00 PM Turn 4 USA Message Yes, Johnson in fort.
Also, Hascall and Cox (with Schofield) with B/W.
Thomas, Howard and Wood with B/W.
All of Hooker's boys plus Stanley with B/W.
Stoneman's cavalry all in fort.

You have Williams (1315) and Harrison (2117) with B/W.
Cheatham (1613) with fort.
Jackson's cavalry all with fort.

J. Kelly / M. Hannon > Nalley [H1512]
150 10/26/2019 10:05:00 PM Turn 2 USA Message Man, I thought I was getting the rules down!
If you'll allow it, I will then change my move to 1216 and then you can retreat before I attack you.
I have to stop there due to being in Walker's zoc anyway, so you can roll for initiative after retreating.
149 10/26/2019 9:59:00 PM Turn 2 CSA Message Actually attacks from the march are not allowed into woods unless there is a road
- Dibrell against Cox - or of course if beginning adjacent.
(7.1: Attack Restrictions / Woods)

If beginning adjacent in a restricted hex, Cav only get to react if an attack announced.

If into H1216 Kellly will retreat of course.

148 10/26/2019 9:42:00 PM Turn 2 USA Message Logan and Harrow (f2) march via the road to 1317 (Gartrell) for 4 movement points, and then use the last move for a hasty attack against Kelly and Hannon. I want to verify before rolling dice, but my understanding is that no cavalry retreat is possible since we are separated by woods not connected by road.
USA has +9 odds (10-1), +1 tactical, -1 hasty for total of +9.
Please verify and we can continue with the attack.

137 10/26/2019 7:53:00 PM Turn 2 USA Message I was thinking Hardee was attacking.
Each only lose 1 extra in the retreat (as you said) and both end up 9/6.

Okay - sounds like you have a lot more experience than me.
Butterfield takes the loss [10/7].
Then both lose 2 on the retreat through 1416 and end in 1417, both [8/5].
Hood and Clayton (f4, 9/6) in 1415.

135 10/26/2019 5:57:00 PM Turn 2 CSA Message Negation of woods restriction requires a road *only* if: "It is unoccupied....". (7.4.3b).

Force projection needing at least a 1/4 of the defending hex has no terrain restrictions whatsoever and of course all adjacent units combine strengths for this total.

Both H1316 - and H1414 too - are full woods and so need to be occupied - by a force of any strength - whose force when combined with adjacent units is sufficient.

Actually either Kelly or Williams needn't be there.

[You may be conflating these two seperate conditions, but this section of the rulebook is notoriously abstruse - coincidentally like your namesake in a certain other book which needs interpretation

134 10/26/2019 8:46:00 AM Turn 2 USA Message First of all, you're right about Cox - I've become so conditioned to losing extra manpower in the retreat that I couldn't read the retreat chart correctly!
Cox still [6/4]

More importantly, and I could be mistaken, I don't think you had that much of a flank bonus. I agree you're starting with all 6 hexes covered for +4. However, after removing hexes from the bonus, I think you only have +2. Of course 1416 comes off due to my troops, as you noted. However, Walker only counts into 1315 due to the road. 1315 and 1316 are connected by road, but Hannon and Williams only add up to a combat value of 1.5 which is less than 1/4 of my 14. Therefore, I think 1316 doesn't count and the final flank bonus was +2 instead of +3, making the final result +1 for a result of 1D/1D.
Check it out and let me know what you think! I'm not 100% confident of my interpretation, so I'm happy to go to the moderator for a ruling if you want to.
