246 11/8/2019 4:07:00 AM Summer 1862 Confederate Message Have fun at the Con. I haven't been to one for a while now. My local one is BIG for Australian standards and my PTSD doesn't go well in the crowds.

As for the game, you certainly stopped any invasion. The anomoly of the first battle of Franklin left Lee cut off and that became the priority as much as I didn't want it to be!

I had originally thought Longstreets crew would help beef up Lee for a barrage of attacks towards Pitts. Mac with Cav meant it would be bloody. Then I thought if I drew a few 3 value cards maybe Kentucky and the Ohio river would be a less blunt approach. And then I drew 3 x 3 value cards....

After your move I could imagine Johnston sitting down to dine in Richmond and then being told that he had to report immediately to Hannover and ready the AoNV to move. "But why on earth? We are guarding Richmond and I've ordered steak!" "Can't Longstreet take his Corps on whatever errand the President has dreamt up?" No Sir, the Army is required and you'll be taking most of Longstreets Corps with you!
245 11/8/2019 2:36:00 AM Summer 1862 Union Message Yeah, knew all of that when I moved to Lewistown...trying to keep you from moving into Frederick or Ohio...no problemo, bro.

Will review the board and get back to ya...will be fairly slow tomorrow and Sat as we are having our local wargaming con this weekend.

Thanks for the clarifications and concern...
244 11/8/2019 12:38:00 AM Summer 1862 Confederate Message I should add Richard that I'm not "lecturing" on the rules. I genuinely had to look all of this up and didn't know the two I've quoted. I always thought you could try to withdraw and always thought the defeated could choose where to retreat to.

242 11/7/2019 11:41:00 PM Summer 1862 Confederate Message 3*/1 CSA Victory

AoNV n6 in Franklin

...and now for another spurious rule:

THE DEFENDER: The defender can never retreat into the space from which the attacker entered the battle or any space that contains an enemy SP or fort. Beyond these restrictions the space that a defender must retreat to is determined by the following set of priorities. If more than one space meets the criteria for a given priority then the victorious player decides which space to choose if priorities 5 or 6 were applied. Otherwise the retreating player decides. The Confederate player cannot retreat across a navigable river under Union Naval Control. If a force has no legal path of retreat, the force surrenders [7.63]. See 8.1 for how to determine a LOC.
1
. Into a friendly-controlled space where a LOC can be traced.
2. Into a neutral space where a LOC can be traced.
3. Into a friendly controlled space without a LOC.
4. Into a neutral space without a LOC.
5. Into an enemy controlled space from which a LOC can be traced.
6. Into an enemy controlled space without a LOC.
If the retreat ends on an enemy PC marker, the retreating force loses one additional SP after it ends its retreat.

So it is option 6 and I choose. AoP retreats to Lewisburg to link up with Curtis. AoP n6 - 1 for enemy PC n5

240 11/7/2019 11:35:00 PM Summer 1862 Confederate Message OK, here it is:

7.24 RETREAT BEFORE BATTLE PROCEDURE: The defender may move his entire force into any adjacent friendly-controlled or neutral space as long as it is not the one from which the enemy force is moving and is free of enemy SPs. If such a space is not available or the Retreat Before Battle roll was unsuccessful, then a battle occurs.

So I'll go ahead and resolve the battle.
239 11/7/2019 5:34:00 PM Summer 1862 Confederate Message My understanding is that a withdrawal needs a friendly controlled or neutral space to withdraw to. If I'm correct then the battle just happens?

2nd part:
Curtis is given the command to try to exploit the the vulnerable Rebel rear...with the hope that the "wiley" Rebs don't have another campaign card!

224 11/6/2019 6:05:00 PM Summer 1862 Union Play Strategy card as Event #14: 3 / Red River Campaign
May not be discarded by the Union. Union must use this card as an OC. If at the conclusion of movement, a Union SP is not on or adjacent to Grand Ecore, LA, then the Union loses 5 SW points. 220 11/6/2019 2:59:00 AM Summer 1862 Union Message Also note that Union Naval is sourced thru Terra Haute...so even with a fort at Paducah, Union navy still in play thru Terra Haute along the Ohio. You agree?
219 11/5/2019 6:39:00 PM Summer 1862 Confederate Message OK. Clarified!

Cairo is safe. The only place I can cross the Ohio is at Parkersburg. It would seem your new fangled navy can sail down the Miss and up the Ohio.

For the Rebs to cross anywhere else along the Ohio would require another Fort downriver from Parkersburg.

The Pittsburgh Gazette is being alarmist and the Richmond Examiner has an arguement!
218 11/5/2019 5:56:00 PM Summer 1862 Confederate Message Rich, before we go any further we should clarify what we understand as the river rules:

My understanding is that naval invasions can be intercepted at their destination. I checked this on Consimworld.

What I am unclear over is if Paducah now allows rebel crossing into Cairo? Paducah is considered to be on both the Ohio and the Tenn Rivers. Tenn isn't "blocked" until Dover but the Ohio is now blocked from Parkersburg.

I'm going to search Consimworld to see if it has any clarification(s).
217 11/5/2019 5:30:00 PM Summer 1862 Confederate Message Reports that Lee's Army was doing nothing are suddenly exposed. The Pittsburgh Gazette leads with "Bells ringing along the Ohio" unlike anything since the French Indian War. The Richmond Examiner questions the move...
