125 3/22/2020 12:57:00 AM 216 BC Rome Message Jeff, I've started up another game. Good luck
124 3/21/2020 10:50:00 PM 216 BC Carthage Message If you don't mind and wouldn't be bored with another go as the Romans, I'd like to do the Carthaginians again, now that I think I have a better (if still far from complete) concept of what they need to be doing.
123 3/21/2020 10:40:00 PM 216 BC Rome Message Jeff, let's just start over and hopefully your cards will be better this time.
Which side would you like to play?
122 3/20/2020 8:43:00 AM 216 BC Carthage Message As previously indicated, I can't match a Double Envelopment and I don't have a Reserve card. (Pretty amazing in a hand of 16 not to have either of those, but that is consistent with the poor luck in drawing cards that characterized both Turns 1 and 2 for me, and had only just begun to change this turn.

So I lose the battle, and having no space to retreat to (having forgotten about that little detail), my army is destroyed.

Under those circumstances, I concede the game.

However, as I previously indicated, I think I've got the key concepts down now. And with courthouses closing and trials getting postponed for weeks and possibly months, I certainly would expect not to be under so much pressure going forward. And I would gladly try another game.

The only other suggestion that occurs to me is that if you were prepared to grant me a new player's mulligan and transfer that PC from Heraclea to Pisae or Faesulae, we could go forward on that basis.

Paulus for init, needs 1-2
107 3/16/2020 11:58:00 PM 216 BC Rome Message Not a problem, we've had lots of cats and still do so fully understand.
106 3/16/2020 9:18:00 PM 216 BC Carthage Message I guess that means, however, that it didn't make its way from my hand to your hand. SO I'll just keep track that I lost that card, and you, that you gained it.

Sorry, this is what comes from having to work over the top of my cat, who apparently missed me last week and thus now insists on plopping himself down on my desk between me and my computer terminal so that I can't ignore him.

105 3/16/2020 9:13:00 PM 216 BC Carthage Message Oops - sorry. I hit "Reveal" rather than "Give." But I would have checked it anyway.

Message from Carthage:
I'll play this one.
100 3/16/2020 12:08:00 AM 216 BC Carthage Play Battle card #37 Probe (modify retreat by -2)

Message from Carthage:
I'll play the Probe card. Since I'm using it as a Double Envelopment card, I understand (pursuant to Rule 14.8) that I can now gain the initiative and become the attacker.
99 3/16/2020 12:03:00 AM 216 BC Carthage Message OK. Then I'll make use of that Special Ability.

98 3/15/2020 4:28:00 AM 216 BC Rome Message Hi Jeff, you are likely giving up too early. Hannibal has a special ability that once a battle, he can use a Probe as Flank Left, or Flank Right or Double Envelopment.
So it’s likely you have a Probe card.
97 3/14/2020 10:56:00 PM 216 BC Carthage Message So, I lose 3 CUs in addition to the 1 I already had lost -- but I have no viable retreat route to a space with one of my PCs or more CUs than are in the retreating force. So I guess that means my entire army is destroyed?

Well, that's what comes from not having a complete understanding of the full role that's played by PC markers in this game.

So, at this point, I think I must concede.

If you'd like to give it another go, however, I would be up for that. I've learned some things.

Message from Carthage:
So we each lose 1, but I must lose my 1 elephant unit.

And now I have to roll on the retreat table.

Message from Carthage:
Well, I've got a pretty good hand of Battle Cards -- except for the fact that I don't have a single Double Envelopment. So Paulus is off to a great start.

The Carthaginians are defeated, and now we must roll for battle casualties.

94 3/11/2020 1:34:00 AM 216 BC Rome Play Battle card #43 Double Envelopment (modify retreat by +2, lose initiative)

Carthage: 16 cards
Rome: 14 cards
92 3/11/2020 12:15:00 AM 216 BC Carthage Message Not successful, but no adverse consequence.

As I make it, the card distribution will be as follows:

Carthage:

9 BCs for CUs
+ 4 for Hannibal's battle rating
+ 2 for provinces
+ 1 for successful interception
= 16 Battle Cards

Rome:

10 BC's for CUs
+ 2 for Paulus's Battle Rating
+ 2 for Provinces
= 14 Battle Cards

I'll leave it to you to kick things off.

Message from Carthage:
Next, we'll attempt an elephant charge.

90 3/11/2020 12:11:00 AM 216 BC Carthage Message And that's just barely good enough. The interception succeeds. +1 Battle Card for the Carthaginians.

89 3/11/2020 12:09:00 AM 216 BC Carthage Die roll request Request: 6-sided die x 1

Message from Carthage:
As I understand the rules, I believe there is no downside to attempting an interception, correct?

So let's go for it.
88 3/10/2020 2:25:00 AM 216 BC Rome Message Jeff, no rush. Make a move when you have time.
This is supposed to be fun, not stressful.
87 3/10/2020 12:17:00 AM 216 BC Carthage Message Sorry to leave you, hanging, Dave -- I'm in another crunch period at work (through Friday), but will try to get a move out tomorrow night.

A. Paulus is alerted that Hannibal is camped at Cosa.
So Paulus and 10 CUs leave Mutina

Paulus travels to Arim, Falerii, Tarquini.
Does Hannibal attempt to intercept?
If not or unsuccessful the Paulus and 10CUs attack at Cosa.
If successful, Paulus will stay and fight.
85 3/2/2020 3:00:00 AM 216 BC Rome Message Wow, neat being able to play a game and relate it to your real life adventures !
84 3/1/2020 10:19:00 PM 216 BC Carthage Message Roll of 4 -2 for crossing a non-Alps pass = 2 = 1 CU lost.

My wife and I saw those mountains while we were driving from Lucca to the Cinque Terre on our wedding anniversary trip to Italy in the spring of 2018. While only about half as high as the Alps to the north, they're still an impressive-looking group of mountains. They are snow-capped even in spring, as the map reflects.

So Hannibal's army shrinks to 8 CUs and 1 CU-E and passes through Pisae on its way to Cosa.

74 2/22/2020 10:22:00 AM 216 BC Carthage Message Dave, I'm back, and will get the year 216 B.C. (the year of Cannae!) started this weekend.

BTW, I finished reading Edward Watts's "Mortal Republic: How Rome Fell into Tyranny" while I was away. If you like reading Roman history, I recommend it as a good survey of the Republic from c. 280 B.C. to the end.

(Carthage) Place two Carthaginian CU's in any friendly controlled port in Africa or Italy. May only be played while Philip V of Macedonia is allied with Carthage.

Message from Carthage:
I'll use this to activate Hasdrubal, who will march with all 6 CUs (subject to the caveat below)as follows:

- Laminium
- Segobriga
- Bibilis
- Iberus.

The caveat is this. As I read the rules, there doesn't seem to be much advantage in leaving a small garrison in a place like New Carthage. It doesn't make it any harder for you to initiate a siege, or to roll successfully on the Siege Table. It's only value is in connection with a relief attempt. Do I understand that correctly? If not, I may wish to reconsider.
55 1/18/2020 12:41:00 AM 217 BC Carthage Message I'm back! Trip was great, but very active and pretty exhausting -- we did 20 Maya sites in the end. Will get my next move out this weekend.

So add a CU at New Carthage with Hasdrabul giving 6CUs.

Thanks, Dave, I appreciate your outlook on this. I'm a federal prosecutor with the U.S. Department of Justice. A grand jury I've been working with concludes its term of service on 12/18, so I need to wrap up the investigations I have before that group by that date.
