167 1/26/2020 12:50:00 PM May-Aug 1943 Allies Message Fix- Keeping card as ops. Moved Marines to Port M vs Madang, staged for an Amphib Assault, vs ground assault.

166 1/26/2020 11:16:00 AM May-Aug 1943 Japanese Message There are two battle hexes. You'll need to change this to an event play (in which case you can activate some more units), or drop a battle hex (in which case you can swap around some activations).

Sorry..., not really.

I like this game. I've been beating the brains out of the Allies (mostly good luck), and you're still dangerous with just two cards left!

160 1/25/2020 5:03:00 PM May-Aug 1943 Japanese Play Future Offensive card as Event #32: 3 / Operation I-Go: Air Offensive
Acitvation: Any HQ. Logistic Value: 4 Conditions: Only air units may be activated. Air Shuttle: The Japanese gain a +1 die roll modification during air-naval combat if the battle is within 6 hexes of an inactive Japanese CV or CVL naval unit.

OC: 5 EC: 7

Message from Japanese:
Play the event on HQ South Seas for 2+4 Naval activations:

It's unlikely to make a difference, but no unit will move within your ZoI.
a) 28th AirFlot at Rabaul attacks Aussie RAAF at Lae, Battle A
b) 26th AirFlot at Gasmata, Battle A
c) (21st AirFlot) from Biak to Aitape, Battle A
d) (25th AirFlot) at Hollandia, Battle A
e) (27th AirFlot) from Buin to Green Island, Battle A
f) ISR prevents use of last activation

The special condition in the Event is in effect as (CVL Zuiho) is inactive and within 6 hexes, so the IJN will enjoy a +1 drm for that. (I'm not sure what historical condition this represents, remind me/us to ask Herman when we see him.)

File on the way.
159 1/25/2020 3:55:00 PM May-Aug 1943 Allies Message Allies will PBM in place. IE Aussies stay put, and the 5th AF units stay put, split up.

158 1/25/2020 3:28:00 PM May-Aug 1943 Japanese Message Well, the ambush was ambushed! The Allies achieve a Critical Hit and have enough factors to eliminate any unit (or flip CA). I presume that you'll go for the Shokaku which I decided to commit w/o it's bodyguard, Zuiho! So that's what's in the VASSAL File. Feel free to change that in your PBM.

The Japanese only get 25%, or 11, hits. Flip 5th AF.

So I missed on the die roll.

Despite the loss of the Admiral Commanding, the CF N2 is still on the ball. His office sniffs out this attack, and the interception is automatic. (Note: this is THE card that is the exception to play intercept cards instead of rolling rule. This one is played after a failed roll.)

HQ CF activates 2+2 naval units:

Message from Allies:
strategic warfare

140 1/24/2020 2:49:00 PM Jan-Apr 1943 Japanese Message Jpn PBM is (Tainan AF) from Woodlark to Gili-Gili

That completes the Strategy Card Phase

4.3 POLITICAL PHASE

4.31 National Status Segment: no changes

4.32 Political Will Segment: The Allies do make PoW by (re)capturing Port Moresby, Buna and Lae. The loss of Gili=Gili, oddly, does not negate any of those. However, per 16.45 the Allies lose 1 PW for the destruction of I Corps in an attack on Lae and per 16.46 the Allies lose 1 PW for not having any CV type units in the game.

Instead of invading Gili-Gili, I should have activated Naval units instead and guaranteed the sinking of the remaining US CA and scored a 3rd (and final PW loss). C'est la Guerre...

4.4 ATTRITION

All the Allied units on New Guinea are isolated due to unneutralized Jpn ZoI

However all flipped units are within range of an Allied HQ, so none are eliminated.

Full strength units will flip however:
US XIV at Buna
Marine SF Bde

4.5 End of Turn: No automatic victory so on to the final game turn. The Allies Reinforcement Phase is next.

136 1/23/2020 9:01:00 PM Jan-Apr 1943 Japanese Play Strategy card as Operations #84: 1 / JN25 Code Change
Intelligence: Intercept Draw one Strategy Card.

OC: 3 EC: 0

Message from Japanese:
Well, this is the card I drew, and because I've already played into the FOQ, I'm obligated to play it.

I should, by all rights, stand pat, but, I'm going to try to put a stake into the heart of the Allies and drive them to the negotiating table.

Playing for OPS (no choice) on HQ Combined Fleet for 4 ARMY activations:
a) 17th Army and 2 ASPs (n.2/4*) from Guadalcanal to Gili-Gili.
b) 7th AirDiv at Madang attacks Port Moresby
c) (Tainan AirDiv) at New Georgia stages to Woodlark and attacks Port Moresby.

* During ISR, the JPN ASPs available are halved, FRU. Allied ASPs are not effected in this manner, instead they have a penalty on divert to Europe rolls.and automatic Reinforcement Delays.

Drawing a Card per #75 (the Sub Attack)
134 1/23/2020 8:37:00 PM Jan-Apr 1943 Japanese Message Again both sides do 100% damage.

The Japanese eliminate both the (19th Army) and the (SS Bde). I mistakenly thought they were full strength but they only had 12 factors in the battle.

The 1st MarDiv takes those 12 hits and flips. With the defender eliminated and the attack not, the battle goes to the attacker.

There is no Allied PBM, and I've just posted the Japanese PBM, so now the CA Nachi must Emergency Naval Move out of Lae. It goes to Guadalcanal.

Second die is the defending Japanese with 24 factors, no drm
132 1/23/2020 8:30:00 PM Jan-Apr 1943 Japanese Message It's a blood bath, both sides awarding all the possible hits.

The Allies can only absorb 56 hits. This is going to have Political Will ramifications.

The Japanese have 3 undamaged units involved. Flipping the two BB's will use exactly 32 hits, so I presume that's what you want to do. BB Yamato is out of naval replacements..., so no point in going after the CA instead.

Japanese PBM
(BB Yamato) to Truk
(BB Kongo) to Rabaul
(BB Hiei) to Kavieng
(25th AirFlot) to Hollandia
(CV Shokaku) to Palau
(CVL Zuiho) remains Admiralty Islands

d) (26th AirFlot) at Woodlark supports Lae
e) (CV Shokaku) from Truk to Admiralty Islands, support Lae

119 1/21/2020 10:22:00 PM Jan-Apr 1943 Japanese Message The Allies 8 result drops to a 6, meaning 100% or 22 hits. That'll flip both units for 18 hits, and the remaining 4 are insufficient to do more damage.

The Japanese do 150%, but only needed 100% to eliminate I Corps. That is a US attack with 100% casualties, so that is a Political Will point lost as well.

As is only right and proper, despite all the unanticipated AA from the ships they USAAF discovered and tried to attack, the IJN only got 25% results, or 14 hits, which flips 5th AF.

At Battle B, Admiral Yamamoto declines the opportunity to help out Admiral Fitch, ComAirSoPac, by shooting down his aircraft thus allowing them to be replaced some where useful.

First die (and only) die is 9 factors with a +1 DRM from the combined 13th AF, looking for a critical hit.

103 1/20/2020 11:07:00 AM Jan-Apr 1943 Japanese Message won't be able to make a move for 30-50 minutes, but in the mean time, just looking at your ACTS post (not the VASSAL file), I've got to throw a penalty flag.

Except for Port Moresby, an amphibious assault / landing cannot be made into a mountain hex.

Don't know how much this screws up your move.
102 1/20/2020 10:53:00 AM Jan-Apr 1943 Allies Play Strategy card as Event #25: 1 / Operation Lilliput: Buna, New Guinea Offensive
Activate: SW HQ only. Logistic Value: 3 Conditions: May only activate US air and US/Australian ground units (an exception to the Allied HQ National Command rules). US Reservist Enter Combat: US ground units have their attack strength reduced by one for the duration of this Offensive.

Play for OPS on HQ South Seas for 2+3 ARMY activations

a) 19th Army from Truk to Lae
b) (Tainan AF) from Wewak to New Georgia
and the rest are used elsewhere..., i.e. unused.

No Battle Hexes, and I don't need any PBM

VASSAL File on the way
100 1/19/2020 1:35:00 PM Jan-Apr 1943 Japanese Message Unsurprisingly, the Allied HQ incompetence is well compensated for by the U.S. Marines. They achieve 24 hits and eliminate 18th Army, recapturing Port Moresby.

The 18th Army's 18 hits is sufficient only to flip the 2nd Marine Division.

I'll mark the VASSAL with two PoW hexes. You can do your PBM. I'll do my EAM before I start moving my forces on my next card.

A great victory for the Allies..., overdue, but I still begrudge it to you.

BATTLE B Ground Combat

First die is for the attacking Leathernecks, 24 factors with a +2, +2, -3 or net +1 DRM.

Second die is for the defending Japanese, 18 factors with no DRM.

And now you're wondering why you only brought 22 factors, as 50% hits is 11 and that's one short of what's necessary to flip the 18th Army.

The Allied A/N brings 22 factors and a +3+1 DRM against the unprotected 18th Army. (Currently wondering why I left them unprotected?)
96 1/19/2020 1:25:00 PM Jan-Apr 1943 Japanese Message BATTLE A Results
Despite the modifiers the Allies only do 50% or 8 hits, so the 7th AD escapes damage and will move during Emergency Air Movement at the End of Turn.

7th AD is too busy skeddaling to do any damage to the Allies.

Ground Combat is successful, Buna falls to the Marine Raiders and Paras.

Message from Japanese:
The Allies are attacking with 24 factors and a net +4 DRM, so the minimum number of hits achievable is 12. That guarantees (CA Aoba) is lost before it can put any torpeckers into BB NC.

So Combat is over. This die roll is for the I-19 attack.
