275 3/6/2020 8:13:00 AM Jan-Apr 1943 Allies Message Francisco,

Thanks for the excellent feedback. I really appreciate it. I definitely have some lessons to put in place going forward.

Good luck to you in the rest of the Tourney. Hope to catch you for another game sometime.

my best,
Mark
274 3/5/2020 7:37:00 AM Jan-Apr 1943 Japanese Message Once you had put such overwhelming air strength I the CBI I started to look for where you were weak. Hawaii gave me the opening. Assuming I hadn't completely killed the Navy and the carriers you still had very little naval reinforcements coming in Turn 6 thanks to Ware In Europe. I was thinking of spending a card to put Combined Fleet on the track and bring it back on board at Hawaii along with an army and naval Air cover. I was confident I could hold Hawaii if I crippled the US Navy enough this turn. I was fairly sure I could extract 1 or 2 PW in Turn 6.

I understand the complication of ISR but we shouldn't play fearing it. We should plan for it. In my previous game I spent almost all game under ISR as Japan. From Turn 4 onwards. I won that game via survival victory on Turn 12.

Youll notice the Pacific mostly has IJN air, naval and ground assets. The Army has a presence by guarding important ports and bases sure, and I created reaction stacks. But if I fell under ISR I still had Brigade/Naval combos that could reinforce a division if needed.

In the CBI while I had navy in Rangoon it was primarily an army theater. The Navy assets were down South East from Java onwards.

It boils down to the fact that in the CBI the army was primarily responsible for offensive operations and mobile defense while the Navy was primarily there for fixed base defense.

In the Pacific the Opposite was true. Though thanks to not being under ISR the elite 1AD contributed to my mobile defense. If the Allies had a foothold in New Guinea that would have forced a few more army assets in the Form of an additional army Air and another army perhaps.

That was probably your other problem: US ground troops were generally idle other than the Aleutians. I was surprised to see you move up the X army corps to lead that invasion. I might have put one of your otherwise not engaged ground Corps for that job. Or if you really want to be cheap both brigades with air and naval superiority will win against a division 90% of the time.

I think the Marcus Island adventure wasn't wise. It's a nuisance sure but extremely difficult to support at this stage in the game. Placing the marine air wing just made it a target and kept you racking up air step losses at a time when air was feeling scarce after the Turn 3 Allied air massacre that saw 9 total steps destroyed (2 full turns of replacements!).

You did shift defensively in the CBI in Turn 4 to husband air assets. But then you added too many to the theater in turn 5. If you were going to add that many I think you should have committed fully to vast air offensives against Japanese forces in Burma.
273 3/5/2020 6:30:00 AM Jan-Apr 1943 Japanese Message Here is what I had left:

2 / Naval Battle of Guadalcanal
Activation: Any HQ. Logistic Value: 5 Airfield Bombardment: If, prior to reaction, a Japanese BB naval unit occupies a battle hex that contains an Allied air unit, but no Allied BB naval unit, then the Allied air unit (max) is reduced (Japanese player's choice) one step prior to air-naval combat (even if this eliminates the unit).

3 / WAR IN EUROPE: Major Axis Victory
Decrease the War in Europe marker a number of spaces equal to the value associated with the year of the current game turn: 1942: 3 1943: 2 1944: 1 1945: No Effect Remove from play if used as an event.

3 / Western Force: Conquest of Sumatra
Activation: South or South Seas HQs only. Logistic Value: 5 Paratroopers: Prior to movement place a Japanese control marker in a hex that is within extended range of an active Japanese air unit if (1) the hex is either unoccupied or is occupied solely by a Dutch regiment; and (2) the hex is not within an unneutralized Allied air ZOI. Eliminate the Dutch regiment.

1 / Tojo Resigns: Moderates in Power
If the game turn is 1944 or later, this card must be played as an event otherwise it is a Japanese option to play as an event, an OC, or discard. Reduce US Political Will by two. The Allied Manchurian Invasion card's prerequisite has been met. Flip the game turn marker from its PM Tojo to its Tojo Resigns side as a reminder. RESHUFFLE: If this card is played as an OC or a discard, reshuffle the Japanese deck at the end of this game turn. This card may not be played as a Future Offensive. Remove from play if used as an event.

# Future Offensive
2 / Submarine Launched Air Attack on the Panama Canal: I-400
Allied Reinforcements for the next game turn are delayed. Place those reinforcements in the delay box when they arrive. If reinforcements are already delayed, there are no additional effects. Place the Panama Canal Attack marker on the game turn track as a reminder. Draw one Strategy Card. Remove from play if used as an event.

I definitely had enough offense for Burma. Wingate would have been annoying but you plan for that. In any case I could have pinned your ground forces and at least taken Akyab this turn. Once I took Pearl Harbor and split your navy I pivoted to the Pacific and started the hunt for US Navy PoW. I was fairly confident I could at least get the Carrier PW. Along with Progress of War and Tojo Resigns I felt I could win the game this turn.

I also thought about bombarding your unprotected ground forces in Australia and Espíritu Santo to further set you back in ground troops. I probably could have bombed 6 more steps in addition to the Attrition of two more steps of Marines in funafuti and Dutch Harbor.

With your hand I might have immediately put Nimitz in Townsville to get the Navy back in supply. From Samoa you can take back Hawaii. The big issue was lack of air cover in your main bases.

After being split like that raiding with the US Navy was probably not a good idea. Even if it's a low level raid you can't be sure I'm not holding another Intel card. It might have been better to use Tarzan for another CBI air raid.

If you're going to put SW Pacific in Darwin you can't really take out South Pacific because it creates ths dangerous split where there is very little command overlap between the US HQs.

While I get that the dynamic in India was worrisome there was still time. Even a Turn 5 India Clock is unlikely to finish before Turn 8. You had plenty of air assets. In fact too many. You were in danger of overstacking.

(to be continued)
272 3/4/2020 11:46:00 PM Jan-Apr 1943 Allies Message Would absolutely love to discuss the game more. I learned some very valuable lessons in this one. I had some bad dice this turn, sure, but I generally feel that each side will have weather that kind of thing a couple of times throughout the game. Our first big Naval battle at Kwaj, I fared very well overall.

I think the Japanese Historical hand has shifted the balance (at least for my play style) from slightly pro-Allied for '42 to slightly pro-Japan. I have seen way too many very-weak in OPS/Mil hands for Japan on turn 2 that get them on their heels almost from the get-go.

Here is what I had left for this turn...

52 1 / Roosevelt-Nimitz-MacArthur: End of US Army-Navy Dispute
This event ends a US inter-service rivalry. Flip the US Inter-Service Rivalry marker to its Strategic Agreement side. If the US Inter-Service Rivalry marker is already on Strategic Agreement side there is no additional effect. Bonus: If this card is played as an event, the Allies have the option to discard a card of their choice and replace it with any card from the discard pile (not those removed from play). Remove from play if used as an event.

72 2 / Halsey: Carrier Raids on Japan
Activate: Any HQ. Logistic Value: 8 if US Central Pac HQ, for all others: 4. Bonus: If during the offensive a US carrier naval unit declares a battle in a Japanese Island hex, unless the Japanese immediately play a weather card, the Allies randomly remove one card from the Japanese hand.

22 2 / Orde Wingate: Chindits
Cancel the activation of one Japanese ground unit that activated in Burma or Northern India (Allied player's choice). Place the deactivated unit back in its starting hex. 77 SF Bde: The Allies gain the 77 Special Forces Brigade as a reinforcement during the next game turn (it cannot be delayed). Place the unit on the game turn track as a reminder. Remove from play if used as an event.

35 2 / Operation Ash: Vella Lavella Invasion
Activate: Anzac HQ only. Logistic Value: 2 Intelligence: Surprise Attack. Conditions: Any air or naval units may be activated, but the only ground unit that can be activated is the 3rd NZ division.

74 3 / Operation Iceberg: Okinawa Invasion
Activate: Any HQ. Logistic Value: 8 if US Central Pac HQ, for all others: 4 Conditions: An Allied ground unit must make an amphibious move to a hex within 10 hexes of Tokyo or this card may only be used as an OC.

Future Offensive
# Description
33 2 / Quadrant Conference: Burma Offensive
Activate: Any HQ. Logistic Value: 3 Conditions: Only air and ground units may be activated. Bonus: This event ends a US inter-service rivalry. Flip the US Inter-Service Rivalry marker to its Strategic Agreement side. If the US Inter-Service Rivalry marker is already on Strategic Agreement side there is no additional effect. In addition, the Allies may immediately construct the Jarhat Trans Route for no cost. If Jarhat already constructed the either Ledo or Imphal can be constructed.

Not a bad hand, but with my forces fading fast, and prospect that I would never get Pearl back, times were definitely desperate.

I was planning to save the Chindits for any place I could get the Ground advantage after backing up the Korean veterans. Halsey is relegated to a 2OC. You never ISR'd me, which is the card I fear most as Allies in early PoW-need turns.

Any way, I very happy to hear any more thoughts you have on the match...

my best,
Mark

270 3/4/2020 10:31:00 AM Jan-Apr 1943 Japanese Message Hi Mark!

Good Game! I have to say the Allies luck was not with them this turn. Nearly all your rolls were bad while nearly all my rolls were good.

I hear you on the overcommit part. Part of the game is balancing needs. You mentioned you over protected pearl Harbor in the past but now it bit you. I also think you over committed to India in terms of air units. After moving Aus Air and losing your air cover in the Australian East coast it might have been better to spend your air replacements to bring back that air cover in Cairns.

192 2/15/2020 8:39:00 PM Sep-Dec 1942 Allies Message Perhaps there is some confusion.

I am moving the Marine ground unit from Attu/Kiska to a port (Dutch Harbor). Believe allowed per 8.4

"The first is Strategic Ground Transport, which allows amphibious assault capable ground units to move from a friendly coastal hex (with or without a port) to a friendly supply eligible port (8.44)."

Note that I am not doubling the standard 2OC range of 10 to get there...

Sound right?
191 2/15/2020 8:04:00 PM Sep-Dec 1942 Japanese Message You can't strat move from Attu/Kiska, there's no port, it can move a maximum of 10 hexes with an OC2 play.

You may want to instead activate 1M Division and strat move the division to Pearl Harbor

(Alas, I never put myself in a position to take advantage of your oversight. I mean, who does that? ;-)
