836 2/17/2020 4:44:00 PM Winter 1918 Central Powers Message Okay - will set one up!
835 2/17/2020 4:37:00 PM Winter 1918 Allies Message I guess my strategic thought was to slow your advance to knocking out a GE army or two on the eastern front, but I never got the roll I needed and I piled up casualties.
834 2/17/2020 4:35:00 PM Winter 1918 Allies Message Yeah, let's start a new match.

I grok the whole "everyone pound on the Germans" bit, and tried to do that on the BR/FR front, but not well enough to make a real dent. Something to improve!
833 2/17/2020 4:21:00 PM Winter 1918 Central Powers Message For Russians your southern campaign was fine & got to a fairly average position. You then did well sweeping me out of Poland and East Prussia, and had some good luck getting trenches set up. The biggest mistake I saw was pulling back from Tannenberg prematurely -- could have made life MUCH rougher for me there. You might not have been able to keep 3 full armies there much longer than you did, but pulling out entirely opened the way for a quick mobile campaign on Kovno for me to get Tsar Take Command played (in some ways the hardest of the Russian sequence to get played, if one is otherwise organized about planning WS and stuff).

As things advanced though, one other observation -- and this is somewhat a matter of opinion to be clear, getting to the edge of my level of expertise -- you did a good number of attacks on me (I mean Russians attacking German armies), and they probably *looked* favorable on the face of them & had flank attacks and stuff, but you were pushing against the tide of "LF3" vs. "LF2" armies, and that really makes a big difference. If I'd been overextended enough that I started having armies break down (and have to march all the way back from Breslau), then attacks like that are probably worth making, but with LF2 armies you were losing armies much quicker than I was, and I was able to keep my armies moving forward w/ only taking "a flip apiece" and then recharging them with RP's.

Which brings me to a final strategic thought, about RP's -- from midgame on it's to your advantage to be taking enough casualties with each of BR, FR, RU, to have your RP's be fully used each turn. You were ending up with a lot of "full" on BR and FR because they would spend time not doing very much. Obviously once FR Mutiny came you can't help it in France, but basically other than that a good rule of thumb is to try to keep forcing combats around the map so that you take enough casualties of all types -- even if it means attacking A4:A12 and stuff like that. Doubly so if everybody is causing casualties to the same CP power (i.e. all to GE) so my own RP's aren't as efficient. I was having very efficient RP's the last few turns and you were having a lot of fulls. Attacking with Russians when they've got lots in the deadpile, and then having BR and FR be full or fullish, also looks bad in that light.

Totally happy to keep going if you want to work through some of the US and Russia card sequences and stuff, or happy to restart when you're ready.
832 2/17/2020 4:03:00 PM Winter 1918 Allies Message I'm tempted to keep playing, since I've got Brusilov, Zimmermann, and Over There in my hand... but my previous failures are weighing me down.

For the Russians, after their offensive stalled, I guess my failure was not falling back to the correct defensive positions, and taking too many casualties? Think I had some bad luck in their rolls vs GE, but prob not enough to explain this collapse. Don't see how I can get them back in the game without half my cards being RPs...
831 2/17/2020 3:44:00 PM Winter 1918 Central Powers Message We're probably nearing the point where it's legit to say you might have already learned most of what you can from this game. I think overall VP stands at 11 including the Cluj situation, just barely in CP territory, but of course Russia is falling down the stairs.

Whether I would have time in 4 turns to batter down the door at Ostend (now that new armies can't arrive by sea) remains to be seen, but unless I seriously fuck up over there, the imminent return of the three Hungarian sites, plus gain of Vilna and likely Kiev are likely to more than make up for what you could take back from me over the remaining turns.

Now that the NE campaign has bogged down (and you got a taste for the kind of little "puzzles" and delaying actions the CP can create), I'm happy to keep pounding as long as you're learning, but if motivation is dropping then we can totally get a fresh one going (with the AMAZING NEW 9.4 MODULE!!!) whenever you're ready.
830 2/17/2020 3:32:00 PM Winter 1918 Central Powers Message Advance GE8,GE18. CC remains in play.
829 2/17/2020 3:29:00 PM Winter 1918 Central Powers Message Libau -- check the "Terrain Key" in the upper right of the map. The "black" anchor ports (i.e. all the Baltic and Germany ones) are Central Power ports. As opposed to all the "white anchor" ports (all the other ports in the game), which are Allied ports. So likewise only CP can use Baltic ports to draw supply and stuff -- only CP could use Riga as a port, though using it to draw supply would require having destroyed the fort.

812 2/17/2020 2:36:00 PM Fall 1917 Central Powers Message Motivation for PoG in general or this specific game? It IS a marathon compared to e.g. Twilight Struggle. I love the way it kind of makes a narrative and has so much variety in the types of play, yet each move still feels almost like a "one-off" that I can make a fairly compartmentalized set of decisions and then be done.

Here is my "provisional play" for CP5, on the assumption that you're not going to advance the NE army into Beersheba. If you decide to advance, I'll "do something else instead", but assuming you are staying put in Sinai once you assess your 2LF losses to the stack, then I'm taking dudes!
797 2/16/2020 10:15:00 AM Fall 1917 Central Powers Message AP win A4:A2. Eliminate AH7 and its replacement corps (3,0). Provisional retreat - one (GEc) to Trieste, the other to Maggiore.

You have choices. Note that if you choose to flip the third IT army (so that all 3 are flipped) then there is no retreat because no eligible advancer and the two (GEc) would therefore remain in Venice.

Let me know your two LF, and any advances, keeping in mind both the siege qualifications for the fort (you'd need the army to advance since you won't be able to bring two corps), and the supply threat to Beersheba if the army were to advance and then I successfully attacked Sinai.

740 2/11/2020 5:47:00 PM Fall 1917 Central Powers Play Strategy card as Operations #55: 4 / Lloyd George
May not be played after MICHEL, BLUCHER, or PEACE OFFENSIVE. No BR attacks vs. Level 2 entrenched GE units may be made for the rest of this turn. The effect of this card is canceled by play of MICHEL, BLUCHER, or PEACE OFFENSIVE events. This event may mean that a BR MO cannot be fulfilled in a specific turn.
