226 2/25/2020 9:02:00 AM Sep-Dec 1942 Allies Message Or add chrome (alert defenders can slow things down, unalert allows for an Ardennes 1940 situation). Perhaps in our case the British unusually had someone who could respond quickly after his ambush succeeded. (Not that likely given the British WWII generals, but Wavell was around and could improvise)
225 2/25/2020 7:59:00 AM Sep-Dec 1942 Allies Message Okay, but I don't think there is anything in the rules saying that any transport routes can only be used by one side once created. What is sauce for the goose is sauce for the gander ....

What I can see as a sensible additional rule is that a transport route can't be used unless you already control it. (If your opponent controls it, then they can have small parties setting up road blocks, blowing up bridges etc and that slows you down. Follow up units can move at full speed).
224 2/25/2020 6:21:00 AM Sep-Dec 1942 Japanese Message Moreover: I've the doubt we played entry #182 of the journal the wrong way. Maybe River over Kwai is available for japs only. As a matter of fact, the difference between the Bangkok-Rangoon route and the Jarhat/Leto/Imphal route is that the former can be built by a JP card only, the latter by both players and it's at own risk of the builder that will be advantaged the opponent at the end. Uhmmm... I'm going to ask a friend of mine that is playing EOTS intensively since 2015 and that normally patrols discussions on Consimworld (where Mark Herman is still active). I'll let you know; in case, I'll propose you to roll back Turn 4 until that impulse (still possible, we have logfiles and the ACTS engine to pick up played cards). So let me check ;-)
223 2/25/2020 5:28:00 AM Sep-Dec 1942 Allies Message Looks like the most I can do is kill one unit as you are all out of the battle hex and I just have one CV in the battle.

I would prefer to kill your CV in that case.
222 2/25/2020 5:24:00 AM Sep-Dec 1942 Allies Message Sounds good. Happy to continue if you are willing as we both need practice with the end game (I've only ever fully invaded Japan once and the Japanese "won" by having one unoccupied hex left at the end of Turn 12 with just the intrinsic garrison. (Not sure the populace would have agreed)

Have to check the rules to see what I can do with 43 hit points, a critical hit and just one allied air unit. I suspect I can just kill 21 AF.
221 2/25/2020 4:03:00 AM Sep-Dec 1942 Japanese Message Well Marc, just wait to cancel even this game, I could have a second thought and decide that it's worth continuing, I'm going to loose just an air unit at the end. It's more an emotional than substantial matter. Just leave me a couple of days more, than I'll be back with a proposal; stay tuned.
220 2/24/2020 8:47:00 PM Sep-Dec 1942 Allies Message Okay. I hope the coronavirus problem is resolved soon as well.

Bye for now
219 2/24/2020 5:15:00 PM Sep-Dec 1942 Japanese Message Actually I think I need a pause from gaming, I have to recover from the current frustration. TS could be worth a try. I'll get in touch in awhile and let you know; in the meanwhile, thx for your kind offering.
218 2/24/2020 5:06:00 PM Sep-Dec 1942 Allies Message Alternatively we could try Twilight struggle. I have not tried that as a game on ACTS, just played it at home with my daughter a few times.
217 2/24/2020 5:04:00 PM Sep-Dec 1942 Allies Message Same phrase is in English. "The icing on the cake", or "the cherry on the cake".

I understand your frustration, we were both hit by Yamamoto at an early stage and that cripples the Japanese offensives. My subs overperformed (including 2 sub cards) and the combat rolls were not good for you in a lot of critical battles.

As you said, if the land combat dice at Rangoon had been reversed, Rangoon would have fallen leaving you with a chance to take Burma.

Thanks for the game. I would be happy to play again and see if I can do better with the Japanese
216 2/24/2020 4:46:00 PM Sep-Dec 1942 Japanese Message OK... this outcome is "the berry over the cake" as we say here in Italy. I was really careful in avoiding to have more than a single a/n unit damaged, renouncing to some power in order to have all reacting units out of the battle hex. This would have been true UNLESS you had got a critic, allowing you to permanently eliminate one unit of mine; which was indeed the case.

Unuseful to continue and see the rest. Anyhow, I had gone in force to take Midway as my last move and I had most likely taken it. Then I had tried to deny you PW next turn, keeping Midway at once (reinforcing it if necessary, so sacrifying more ground units due to OOS situation) and hoping to achieve the last PW card. A big chain of "ifs" that couldn't have left me more than 5% of chance of succeeding bit still worth a try.

This is a big game under many aspects, but too prone to random events. Japan simply can't allow himself to loose Yamamoto in Turn 3, getting no military cards in Turn 3, being hit by subs (despite the malus of 1942 for US) in Turn 3 and Turn 4 as well, then finding in opponent hands an ambush card exactly when it was needed. Maybe he could stand against one or two of these disgraces but not in front of ALL together. It would subtract will of fight even to players much more skilled than me.

That said, thx for having played, I appreciated a lot your spirit and your friendly attitude. So thx a lot, congrats, and good luck for future games, and whatever.

Going to be a lot of B-17s getting shot down

210 2/24/2020 10:30:00 AM Sep-Dec 1942 Allies Message I was wondering if you would be affected by the Coronavirus problens in Italy. I hope they can resolve it quickly.

It is starting to affect quite a lot. I work for British Airways and we have been obviously cancelling flights. My wife works for a company with a lot of factories in China, they have been affected (closed) and therefore their office in the UK is affected.

Good luck - Marc
209 2/24/2020 4:01:00 AM Sep-Dec 1942 Japanese Play Strategy card as Operations #61: 2 / Kamikaze Attack
Play prior to one battle of the Offensive that is within 11 hexes of Tokyo (3706) and within extended range of a Japanese air unit. The Japanese player eliminates two Allied naval steps (Japanese player's choice, may not eliminate a unit unless there is no other option), while reducing the Japanese air unit whose range was used one step (even if this would eliminate the air unit). No more than one Kamikaze per battle, but more than one Kamikaze per offensive is allowed. Draw One Strategy Card. Remove from play if used as an event.

208 2/24/2020 2:40:00 AM Sep-Dec 1942 Japanese Message Got it. OK, the picture is completely (and finally!) clear now. As for NZ unit, I provided to shift it to the GT track earlier but I messed up things with logfiles, thx for corrections.

You surely have heard that Italy in a couple of days has become the western country more hit by the virus, all cases are concentrated in the north and especially close to Milan: I'm currently at home, our working site has been temporarily closed. All people are becoming crazy here, hopefully all this madness will quit in awhile...

My move later, likely in the late morning.

205 2/23/2020 5:29:00 PM Sep-Dec 1942 Japanese Message Corrections done. Your pbm is about the survived air unit only.
204 2/23/2020 5:20:00 PM Sep-Dec 1942 Japanese Message OK. I'll take the chance for making corrections (I realize now that I failed to give you another loss, an "8" means full damage, with 31 factors I have to kill one air unit and flip the other. I should have been really dazzled half an hour ago...)
203 2/23/2020 5:16:00 PM Sep-Dec 1942 Allies Message Apologies, I should have reposted the log file. The landing at 4022 is a sneaky one as it threatens Rabaul and Gasmata, but can't be intercepted. Will do Pbm tomorrow
202 2/23/2020 5:08:00 PM Sep-Dec 1942 Japanese Message OUCH!!! I was wondering, in fact, which was the scope of it all... lacking of logfile has completely misleaded me. Uhm... maybe that my reaction could have been slightly different but was my mistake at the end, so good in such a way. Waiting for your pbm, please correct position of M Brigade, then I'll move.
201 2/23/2020 5:02:00 PM Sep-Dec 1942 Allies Message Pbm will have to wait as I need access to vassal to check what I am doing .
200 2/23/2020 4:59:00 PM Sep-Dec 1942 Allies Message 1m division moved to 4022, not to Lae. I am not daft enough to assault a location held by a Japanese army with 1 division and no naval support 😁. So marines should land at 4022. As there is no named location there, you can't roll for special reaction.

Rest of combat looks fine
199 2/23/2020 4:53:00 PM Sep-Dec 1942 Japanese Message No JP losses, flip both US Air attackers.

* 3819: [CV Shokaku] moves to 3615 (Ulithi)
* 3822 (Lae): CA Aoba moves to 4021 (Rabaul)

Waiting for your PBM and here I have another doubt: according to ASP rules, M Brigade should go back to New Georgia flipped, but here any chance of ground combat was denied by a/n results. Still, I'm leaning towards flipping M Brigade: thoughts?

I don't think you can reinforce Bangkok with Land Units. The Army in Singapore can't reach (You can't use a transport route to enter an enemy occupied hex) and you have no naval units in the same hex as a land unit in range, so you can't come by sea (except the Army in Singapore, but you can only use 1 ASP). Feels a bit dubious, but does give me a chance for a good riposte.

174 2/22/2020 7:57:00 AM Sep-Dec 1942 Allies Message Interesting point about the die rolls.
The air/naval, the allies fire first as it was an ambush, so it seemed logical for their roll to be first.

Actual result was not affected for that one.

Land combat is simultaneous, so normal convention is attacker rolls first.

I agree that things now look grim for Japan. However we both probably need to practice the middle and end game.

I can still mess up !
173 2/22/2020 7:49:00 AM Sep-Dec 1942 Japanese Message Impulsive choice would be here to forfeit the game, but I suppose that a second short game in a row would provide us a sense of unfinished. Let's go on to road of invasion of Japan, will be educational, for sure.

So, your next card.
172 2/22/2020 7:44:00 AM Sep-Dec 1942 Japanese Message No needs to apoligize, I've been too pretentious going for an "all or nothing" target when you had almost a full hands of cards to play.

Just a remark: despite the disaster of having been ambushed, a simply inversion of JP/AP ground combat die rolls had meant the fall of Rangoon. I'll wonder for the whole game why on earth after having rolled AP first and JP second in a/n combat, you decided to do it in the opposite way for ground combat (but simply, once you're unlucky there is no limit to misfortune...)

165 2/21/2020 10:39:00 AM Sep-Dec 1942 Japanese Message Exactly what I was afraid of. Let us see that that die roll of "3" instead of "4" for subs die roll will be decisive for the whole game. I realize now that I hadn't a Plan "B", for any reasons I was sure to move first this turn, so now I have to rethink it all. I need some time.

154 2/21/2020 5:19:00 AM Sep-Dec 1942 Allies Message Yes, the dice and cards were kind to me. At least one of the attacks should have ended at half strength.
153 2/21/2020 4:57:00 AM Sep-Dec 1942 Japanese Message Nice move and the best possible usage of a powerful card. You've been lucky inflicting me maximum of possible damage (overall chances to achieve it were low) but it's the game... I'll put together the file with with my reinf in awhile.

141 2/21/2020 3:06:00 AM May-Aug 1942 Allies Message Slightly younger than me then - I turn 59 in April :-)

My sporting activity these days is Lawn Bowls - at which I am a comparative youngster...
140 2/20/2020 12:47:00 PM May-Aug 1942 Japanese Message About my hand: of course, not a single good military card; moreover, you killed Yamamoto and this usually is dooming to a hard defensive game for Japanese.

As for volley, I played it in the 70s, then was a trainer in the 80s. Then I kept playing occasionally... actually I am just a supporter (I'll turn 59 in August so active sport is just a recollection...)
139 2/20/2020 8:32:00 AM May-Aug 1942 Allies Message Took a look at the volley ball. I played a little back when I was at school (so 40 years ago now). Not at that level though :-)
138 2/20/2020 8:16:00 AM May-Aug 1942 Allies Message Looks like your hand this turn was good for defending, not great for attacking.

Last card may be tomorrow morning from me.
137 2/19/2020 6:19:00 PM May-Aug 1942 Japanese Play Strategy card as Future Offensive Message from Japanese:
Well, I choose a lower profile.

I submitted a logfile including that started from the map BEFORE your last move, so better if you start from my last. If you need my .vsav file tell me, I'll copy into Dropbox.

You may go with your last move or, if you play your FO card as an Event, with your last two moves.
136 2/19/2020 12:48:00 PM May-Aug 1942 Japanese Message The girls won (yes, it's a female team...) even if they didn't play that well. Here's a direct link to the page dedicated to yesterday's match, in case you're curious:

http://www.agilvolley.com/igornovara.asp?id=3&idnews=2984

The team is the current European Champion (I was in Berlin last may attending at the triumph against another italian team), but we have a much weakier roster this season so no Cups for us in 2020, I'm afraid ;-)

I have to think awhile to my last move of the turn, maybe later tonight.
135 2/19/2020 11:46:00 AM May-Aug 1942 Allies Message I read that as my choice (Allies must reduce a Corps).

I will leave the one in Rangoon at full strength and reduce the other one.

Shame to lose what could have been a good strafing run....

How was your match last night ?
134 2/19/2020 11:35:00 AM May-Aug 1942 Japanese Draw Extra Strategy card
133 2/19/2020 11:34:00 AM May-Aug 1942 Japanese Play Strategy card as Event #21: 3 / Mahatma Gandhi: Worker Strikes in India
Can only be played in reaction to an Offensive activated by the SEAC HQ. Cancels a SEAC HQ offensive and the Allies must reduce one full strength Indian Corps (cannot eliminate a reduced unit, if none available, no additional effect). Draw one Strategy Card. Remove from play if used as an event.

OC: 5 EC: 0

Message from Japanese:
Palying this to completely cancel your offensive. As for the Indian Corps that must be reduced, how do you read the text on the card, have I to choose which one (as usually happens for battle losses) or it's your choice? Since it could be rather important, I may ask to someone really expert if you are in doubt.

Waiting for your answer before submitting any logfile.
132 2/19/2020 10:46:00 AM May-Aug 1942 Allies Play Strategy card as Operations #38: 2 / Operation Tarzan: Burma Offensive
Activate: Any HQ. Logistic Value: 4 Conditions: The Allied player may only activate ground and air units, of which one must be a Chinese Army unit IF there is one on the map and in HQ range. If no such unit is available, this requirement is ignored.

OC: 2 EC: 4

Message from Allies:
Play for Ops on SEAC for 3.

Battle A (2108, Kwai Bridge North)
2104 (Jarhat): SEAC Air moves to 2106 (Mandalay), joins Battle A

131 2/19/2020 8:27:00 AM May-Aug 1942 Japanese Play Strategy card as Event #18: 1 / Bridge on River Kwai: Death Railroad
If the Japanese control hexes 2108 and 2109, they become Trans Routes for the remainder of the game and any Japanese HQ that can trace a continuous Trans Routes via the Kwai RR to Rangoon has +1 added to its efficiency rating if any units are activated in Burma or Northern India. Place the Bridge Over the River Kwai marker near this location as a reminder. Remove from play if used as an event.
