Message from Central Powers:
T2 MOs. d1 CP, d2 AP...
307 3/11/2020 10:28:00 PM Summer 1915 Central Powers Message I by no means have this hammer figured out, but I can tell you this, Reynolds: the default position in the next game is Paris no later than turn 6! If this works, I'll do it all the damn time!

(Spoiler: it rarely works.)

I'll fire up the next one. It's Random Time, baby!
306 3/11/2020 10:25:00 PM Summer 1915 Allies Message Interesting points - I'll have to go back and re-play it and see if there were turning points where it feels like I had different options. Certainly there were a couple of turns where it never occurred to me that a sustained drive for Paris was a thing that could even be a possibility.

As far as Russia, I originally intended to attack Austria, but then two turns went by during which I only got one Russian army reinforcement, so by the time I could have done anything the Austrians were pretty flush and full - so I went with a northern front thing instead to try to pressure the Germans a bit (I did get ONE army flip on you, haha).

The funny thing is for all the games I've looked at on ACTS, I've NEVER found one with an early game drive on Paris in it -- still waiting to find it! I see lots of "Hammer" but that usually calms right down after the French pull out of the forts -- or turns into more of a drive on Nevers, etc. But I'll keep looking!

You ready to start SWEEPS QUATRE, or do you need a break? (Pretty soon when we're all locked down, we'll have all the time in the world! BTW I'm glad Lyman's gf works at CDC and gave me the hint to cancel our Spain trip, or we'd be on day 3 of an "apparently indefinite trip to Spain" right about now...). Since I was CP in our first two games, plus this was kind of a quickie, I figure you should be the CP again... whenever you're ready!
305 3/11/2020 10:11:00 PM Summer 1915 Central Powers Message Thanks for the game. I can get nuts sometime, but I frequently get nuts and then get a comeuppance in the form of 'this is why players don't do that.'

I don't have this figured out, so it's worth seeing how the best players attack and especially defend against an all out blitz in the West. I think those Russians should go against the Austrians or else they need to be up and on the Germans, hard, fast. I think my German armies in the East didn't take a single step loss, right? You could almost abandon the Austrian front and aggressively move RU armies north. But I've found that the best thing is to hit the Austrians. Even a couple of ops that the CP don't want to take to cover holes in the Austrian line are a big deal. It seems counterintuitive, but when the CP is going west, even vulnerabilities in the Russian line don't matter. You want the CP to turn east in that situation. I am not sure I would pull back in Serbia. The move meant I had no fear of the last impulse attack on the Austrians followed by start of next turn attack. Basically, the Russians (and Serbs) have to get somebody's armies into the dead pile.

The rule of thumb is it takes 2 spaces adjacent to Paris to take it. C-T entrenched is tough, and if you can't make the Germans pull back, you're in danger in Paris in the long game. But C-T plus Melun probably doomed you. I think even if you leave breadcrumbs behind, it's good play to make the Germans spend ops to take the spaces between the front and Paris. I covered a lot of ground in 2 card plays. That's probably only survivable if you don't give up Melun, or if you get the attrition engine seriously revved up.

You played an SR on the first turn that allowed me to play an SR to cover, but my SR ramped up the threat, when I put 2 GEc down near Belgrade. It was a trade that favored me, and in my opinion either ops with the Russians or RPs to help the French is probably better there. (In our last game I think I didn't commit to French RPs enough. It hurts to waste BR or RU RPs, but man, when the French fall into the abyss, they don't come back.)

But yeah, I had great early combat results, great trench rolls, and I was fortunate that your earlier LW arrival didn't give you the cards that would have saved it.

Mostly, though, Melun + C-T is hard to beat, I think.
304 3/11/2020 8:55:00 PM Summer 1915 Allies Message Okay I don't think there's any reasonable last gasp - I'll resign, ggwp!

So that's my first game that went that particular direction (all out drive for Paris). Although I may have done a few silly things later on after the cause was mostly hopeless, did it seem to you that I did anything particularly wrong in the first few turns? I felt like I was doing the right stuff but was getting my cards in a less-than-optimum order (like not getting Big Russians down in time to move them during some of my forced ops turns), combined with you getting plenty of 7's. So I just want to make sure I didn't do something stupid & it was just there for you to take this time?

The RU unit(s) must retreat 1 space. Full strength CP units may advance. Forts and non-RU units in space are still attacked. Aborted CP attacks still counts for MO purposes.

238 3/10/2020 4:47:00 PM Spring 1915 Allies Message BTW the event markers are now on the reinforcement cards underneath the reinforcements. Placing them also keeps War Status tracked correctly. Have you experimented with the auto-scoring? If you're placing the events on the turn track as they occur, and control markers on the map when the VP sites change hands, it accurately computes it for you w/o adding. Makes me SO much more aware of where VP stands... (And for later in the game you can click the VP button and get an add-up of what the Final Scoring would be)

GE3, GE1, GE6 and (GEc) in Melun attack Paris at 16:9, shifted to 15:12. German MO made.
223 3/10/2020 1:03:00 PM Spring 1915 Allies Message Oh I forgot to do an allied RP -- I guess put the BEc back in the RB(1,0)

221 3/10/2020 12:58:00 PM Spring 1915 Allies Message Haha, I like the spunk of discarding the combat cards so you can immediately redraw them both ;)

214 3/10/2020 12:54:00 PM Winter 1915 Central Powers Message Replacement points: AH: 2, BU: 1, GE: 3, TU: 1

2 AH: AH1 full in Budapest; rebuild AHc (4,0)

(I *love* the module functionality to count what's in the RB automatically. Thanks!)

3 GE: flip GE8 in Breslau; flip GE6 and GE1 in Melun.

BU/TU nowhere near belligerence. Sad!
213 3/10/2020 12:11:00 PM Winter 1915 Central Powers Message Horrible Russian luck in combat and sieges. Danzig holds.

211 3/10/2020 12:11:00 PM Winter 1915 Central Powers Message I think the reps + Falk play was probably my better option. I think with the German line and the French dead pile this is very heavily tilted to the CP, and in that situation, a conservative line is probably the best one. I think in the future I will go that route. I was a little lucky that the combat rolls didnít go against me as I pressed it.

Also, I wish I had trenched Breslau early and often. I tossed off one or two attacks on Belfort that should have been used to get the army to Breslau and start digging.
