475 4/10/2020 5:48:00 PM Summer 1916 Allies Message OKAY! Go to www.brianreynolds.com/files and in the directory you will see the 9.6 version of the mod -- pull it down!

Couple of questions:
(1) Which side you in the mood to play? We've each played both sides twice so I have no strong opinion -- if you're in the mood to keep honing your CP then by all means go ahead, I certainly need practice at AP, but I'm also happy to swap sides.
(2) Now that we've reached an equal number of plays-of-sides I'm going to suggest we change our "default bid". Although bidding 1 for AP is listed as the "average bid" in the rulebook, whenever I'm watching the high powered guys play online, and likewise when I was at the Prezcon the Gregorios and Beymas were all CP-seeking. I was bidding "+0 for CP" in my first three rounds. Beyma bid +1 for the CP against me in the finals (and aaaaalmost regretted that bid). So ANYWAY, I suggest we might want to just keep the bid at "+0" unless you have other reason to disagree?

So anyway, lemme know what side you want to play and let's get going on "We'll Always Have Frankfurt" :D
474 4/10/2020 2:30:00 PM Summer 1916 Allies Message Interesting, that's an actual *Vassal* crash -- rather than just Vassal being irritated at a bug in my module. I was able to reproduce it, and it's funky.

I wonder if it was a byproduct of the module being occasionally opened with version 9.4 (I noticed that 9.4 time in the log -- maybe that was even the turn it became a T2 trench). I guess I'll poke around in the prototype but it's not like the Trench piece is "very complicated" in its definition!
473 4/10/2020 2:19:00 PM Summer 1916 Allies Message Oh YEAH! My round 3 game at Prezcon this year was against some pretty old guy named Steve (can't remember last name), and apparently he has "been around awhile in the PoG scene". I could tell what he REALLY want to do was make it to his Terraforming Mars heat by mid-afternoon, but MAN did he give me some good lessons on the "Zen of Russia". And I came *this* close to beating Beyma with it too.

Oh the other Gregorio thing that I thought might have come in handy for you during the part where I was at Total War and you were hard-pressed to keep up on Reinfs & RP's and War Status at the same time -- He'll frequently lay down his giant RP card as CP1, and just forego the temptation to go straight at it. And then the AP *could* try to grab initiative, but of course if it does then now IT is behind the 8-ball on RP momentum.
472 4/10/2020 2:15:00 PM Summer 1916 Central Powers Message If you open this file and you just right click on the T2 at Koblenz, you might be able to duplicate it. I just did it, and duplicated the error:

https://www.dropbox.com/s/87iumjtmj1g5qaf/T9%20CP6.vsav?dl=0

Here is the screenshot of what Vassal shows me:

https://www.dropbox.com/s/nzamfcd87ibna54/trench%20capture%20bug.PNG?dl=0

And here is the error log:

https://www.dropbox.com/s/i15lhe6aosdmfwq/trench%20capture%20bug%20log.txt?dl=0

I'll email those to you if you have any difficulty opening them.
471 4/10/2020 2:07:00 PM Summer 1916 Central Powers Message One of the things that hurt me is that although you were hammering me in the West, you were careful not to lose full armies, and you always had an attack w/o a positioning move. I couldn't give ground other than when I did it at first, without giving you good bleeding attacks. You stayed in contact and didn't go absolutely all out nuts.

I totally failed to understand where I needed to draw the line. I needed to go to Italy *and* draw a line somewhere. Or draw a line somewhere and *not go* to Italy. It's a danged hard game to play at a high level. Another subtle move that I am going to copy from you was when all of a sudden you had your Russian armies back in stacks. I was licking my chops when your armies were strung out one per space. Then you made a couple of positioning moves, and there were a pair of 9-strength stacks facing me.
470 4/10/2020 1:56:00 PM Summer 1916 Allies Message Yes, great game! And of course my War Status cards fell out in basically perfect order, after which my clear strategy became "apply maximum pressure" to make your catching up & taking RPs as painful as possible. One of my first "lessons" from Gregorio (as he casually and effortlessly disassembled me in a Prezcon tournament game) was noticing when the CP is making "less than a full commitment in the west" and the imperative to go absolute gangbusters.

I probably mismanaged Italy after my early good start - and of course my own insistence on *making* all those IT MO's contributed to my downfall there. Of course THREE German Armies will probably put a giant crater in almost any mid-War Italy, and those were the three missing armies deeply missed on the western front.

Let me have a quick peek at the module code and see if I can paste together some quick fixes, and then we can "beta test" 9.6 :D

Do you have anything still in your "chat readout" from when that Trench error happened earlier?
469 4/10/2020 1:48:00 PM Summer 1916 Central Powers Message I'll resign. Very nicely done.

That was probably the most instructive game of PoG I've ever played. We both had a death grip on the other one. Italy should be fatal, but on this board it's critical to either defend the Rhine *or* defend the East. You made me bleed in both east and west, and Serbia, to boot. Only 10 turns, but it was a great 10 turns.

I'm ready to go again whenever you are. Just say the word.

Note to self: make your damn MOs next time!
468 4/10/2020 12:36:00 PM Summer 1916 Allies Message Strasbourg is an AP 5:4 win.
(FR9) to (FRc) (1,0)

Perm Elim (GE4). (GE7) is retreated to Stuttgart. FR2 follows into Mannheim.

Current VP stands at 0 (Aachen, Frankfurt, Lodz, and Koblenz have changed hands relatively recently)

That was a strong round for me to hit all those 6's -- if I rolled a bunch of 1's I was going to have to "take a breather".
467 4/10/2020 12:28:00 PM Summer 1916 Allies Message I've speculatively retreated you to Essen. BR4 can't safely follow you to Kassel since it "doesn't know about the glorious victory in Strasbourg yet", so it stops in Frankfurt.
466 4/10/2020 12:27:00 PM Summer 1916 Allies Message Koblenz is AP 7:3 win.
Flip BR5.
Eliminate GE18 to (GEc) (0,0) and then eliminate (GEc) for 7th.
You have two space retreat, and then BR4 advances to Frankfurt.
465 4/10/2020 12:25:00 PM Summer 1916 Allies Message Okay Lodz is a 7:5. GE10 to (GEc) (0,1).
RU4 to (RUc) (4,0).
You have a 2-space retreat and I will probably follow with both armies. Cannot retreat through Plock or Czestochowa.
464 4/10/2020 12:20:00 PM Summer 1916 Allies Message Holy crap - I wasn't all that excited about the timing of my "1" last round, but three 6's certainly makes up for it!
463 4/10/2020 11:44:00 AM Summer 1916 Central Powers Message Well that probably ends it. I will get back to my map and see if I can spot any hope. More in probably a couple hours, when I get home.

457 4/9/2020 9:58:00 PM Summer 1916 Allies Play Strategy card as Operations #30: 4 / Salonika
Allied player must SRs at least one and up to 3 BR/FR Corps (from Allied ports on the map and/or Reserve) only to Salonika (ANA, AUS, CND, or PT do not qualify as BR for this purpose). This counts as a SR action (see 9.3.3). May be played after Greek Entry provided Salonika is Allied controlled and subject to stacking limits.

12:9 at Frankfurt... big roll here...
451 4/9/2020 8:53:00 PM Summer 1916 Central Powers Message Heads up, when I clicked 'capture the trench' in Koblenz, I got a bug warning from Vassal. I ignored it, the module placed an AP T1 over top of my CP T2. I couldn't back out to just the CP T2. So I deleted the AP T1, then I did it again: click to 'capture' the T2. And it worked the second time. CP T2 went away, AP T1 replaced it.

Dig in Turin
438 4/9/2020 4:15:00 PM Summer 1916 Allies Message Yeah thanks - I've been getting called around the house a bunch today and haven't had time to concentrate on figuring out my "hand plan" yet!
437 4/9/2020 3:12:00 PM Summer 1916 Central Powers Message Just confirming that you saw my CP1 at the start of our exhchange there.
436 4/9/2020 1:16:00 PM Summer 1916 Allies Message OH! That would probably do it then. I never really thought about players "intentionally backing up" ... but such is life in the videogames biz, I should know better by now! I'll put some kind of guard of not putting more than one of those things on a turn.

BTW fwiw you can actually drag the event markers directly to any turn (or even drag them from turn to turn once you place them, or even drag them over somewhere else on the map entirely, like for people that want their missed MO markers all in a little pile somewhere) and it will all work ... so OF COURSE you found the ONE thing I didn't think of! :D :D :D
435 4/9/2020 1:12:00 PM Summer 1916 Central Powers Message I love the module counting, by the way. This version is fantastic.
434 4/9/2020 1:05:00 PM Summer 1916 Central Powers Message I think I did that because I wanted to place a VP event on the right turn. So I backed up, placed the event, and went forward again.
433 4/9/2020 1:03:00 PM Summer 1916 Central Powers Message There is definitely a chance I did that.
432 4/9/2020 12:55:00 PM Summer 1916 Allies Message Now I've gotta figure out how it put FOUR Blockade VP markers on Turn 4 for you! And two for mine! And apparently did just fine after that.

Complete sanity check... there's no chance is there that at Turn 4 you used the Turn Controls to back up to turn 3 and advance to turn 4 again multiple times is there? I mean I guess I just need to put in some check for "is there a Blockade VP counter already on the space", which isn't that hard to do, I'm just mystified what cataclysm of event triggers led to FOUR!

431 4/9/2020 12:52:00 PM Summer 1916 Allies Message Haha yes alas the module boardcount can be no more perfect than the players, and I find myself appalled at how often I forget to move/place a marker when I am copying moves from ACTS (of course then I follow some big tournament game and find "The Masters" are just as bad at that). But I DO think having the module scoring makes squaring these things up a lot quicker and easier!
430 4/9/2020 12:44:00 PM Summer 1916 Central Powers Message Never mind on the board count. It's right. I've been forgetting to count Lodz +1.
429 4/9/2020 12:34:00 PM Summer 1916 Central Powers Message Here is my map: https://www.dropbox.com/s/7okablpcvkvlbaq/T10%20CP1.vsav?dl=0
428 4/9/2020 12:28:00 PM Summer 1916 Allies Message Hunh. Email me a save file of your current position and let me take a look.
427 4/9/2020 12:25:00 PM Summer 1916 Central Powers Message I had 4 -1 markers there. That and the -1 in the second winter turn made me think the module was mistakenly counting all 5, when in fact, for whatever reason, it just had multiple -1s in the first winter. I manually deleted them and it's right now. But it's still 1 off on the board VP count. I have doublechecked all the markers.
426 4/9/2020 12:14:00 PM Summer 1916 Central Powers Play Strategy card as Operations #51: 4 / Peace Offensive
May only be played after "H-L Take Command". Cancels all trench effects for 1 GE attack. If attacker does not advance into the space, subtract 1 VP. Play prior to Attempt Flank Attack Step. A trench does not need to be present.

Message from Central Powers:
T10 CP1 4 Ops

2 and 3. Move Turin: AH2 to Avignon; GE1 digs.
4. Attack Lodz: GE8, GE9, GE10 attack Warsaw @ 15:11 = 15:9. No advance.
425 4/9/2020 11:46:00 AM Summer 1916 Allies Draw Strategy cards NOTE: The deck was reshuffled on this deal.
424 4/9/2020 11:12:00 AM Summer 1916 Allies Message I could actually probably teach the module to list the names of the captured VP sites. My "string function" tech has been improving as I've been working on my next masterpiece, a new For The People module (did I tell you about my next masterpiece? It's in the home stretch...)
423 4/9/2020 11:11:00 AM Summer 1916 Allies Message 3 VPs is correct I believe. Obviously w/ module it can be as simple of a thing as forgetting to put an allied control marker on Strasbourg when the fort falls. Or forgetting to delete the one in Belgrade.

Could you also BTW check on the Turn 4 box the turn track (just roll over it w/ mouse) and tell me if you ended up with ONE "Blockade VP" marker there or two? (Cause I don't think we've exchanged maps this game, right... if I was the only one who got double markers there then it was probably my recordkeeping fuckup, whereas if we both independently got them then its probably a module bug)
422 4/9/2020 11:05:00 AM Summer 1916 Central Powers Message I'm going to think about this for a bit. Back later.

DUDES.

If all I needed was Strasbourg and Cracow I'd definitely take a shot, but as of now it's just a leeeetle too thin.
409 4/9/2020 10:14:00 AM Spring 1916 Allies Message Oh! I somehow had TWO "Blockade -1VP" markers on Turn 4. Not sure how that happened - I will look if there's something whacked with the module, or did I get confused and drag one there myself (?!). Anyway I agree 3 VP now.
408 4/9/2020 8:06:00 AM Spring 1916 Central Powers Message That's 2/3 at Cracow, actually, but I'll still take my chances. Overall I make that to be close to 50/50.
407 4/9/2020 8:05:00 AM Spring 1916 Central Powers Message I actually counted Strasbourg. I'll adjust that:

+10 at start
-6 board VPs (Aachen, Metz, Konigsberg, Cluj, Czernowitz, Lemberg)
+4 board VPs (Milan, Genoa, Bologna, Florence)
-2 missed MOs
-2 blockade
-1 net events
=======
Net +3 VPs (if you advance on Aachen).

Cracow there as an 'easy' one needing siege, Strasbourg is an easy one needing combat or siege. Danzig and Lodz possible.

With 4 Ops you can get a what, 100% chance at Strasbourg, 25% chance at Lodz, 33% chance at Cracow, and about 20% chance at Danzig, needing 3 out of the 4. If I'm in your position, I'm sorely tempted, but I will take my chances.
406 4/8/2020 10:01:00 PM Spring 1916 Allies Message Did you forget Strasbourg? (Still under siege)?

It looks like if you take RPs then I can definitely pick up Strasburg, and have a 2/3 siege shot at Cracow?

There's also the 30-ish% at Danzig (need a retreat plus siege) and then the 1-in-7-ish thing at Lodz of course, but those aren't nearly as attractive w/o Cracow/Strasburg.
405 4/8/2020 8:56:00 PM Spring 1916 Central Powers Message You can't actually continue advancing from Belgrade because my retreat path is through Novi Sad where the (GEc) is sitting. (No OOS issue for me.)
404 4/8/2020 8:53:00 PM Spring 1916 Central Powers Message Your 'current vp' calc in the mod appears to count all of the blockades, fyi.

Sometimes a fella ignores MOs for a good reason. *Both* of my missed MOs have been wasted ops used elsewhere. Ugh.
