Entry # Time Turn Player Title Entry
23 4/2/2020 7:33:00 AM 1620-1621 Catholic Play Strategy card as Event #12: 1 / Frederick of Palatine Deposed as Elector
Catholic player must control Lower Palatine. Transfer Electorate marker from Palatine to Bavaria. Bavaria is an electorate for the rest of the game.

Message from Catholic:

AS event...
22 4/1/2020 1:11:00 PM 1620-1621 Protestant Play Strategy card as Foreign Aid #11: 3 / Treaty of Ulm
Neither player may enter a Neutral Area or Independent City for the rest of the turn.

Message from Protestant:
I'll play this to get 11 Foreign Aid Points (FAPs).
21 4/1/2020 1:06:00 PM 1620-1621 Protestant Message We've been neglecting the VP marker in ACTS and it still stands at 21, so no need to adjust that.
20 4/1/2020 1:05:00 PM 1620-1621 Protestant Message Actually, Chris, I don't think Areas can ever go to being neutral under Rule 3.13. They remain under the control of whomever previously controlled them until the opposing player has taken enough cities to switch control. Thus, under the current circumstances here, with the Palatinate's 4 cities being split 2-2, Protestant control would remain until you took a third city. And logic supports that, as in this case, with the region evenly divided between the Protestants and the Catholics, the one thing it isn't is neutral!

However: in your last move, you could have (literally) gotten more mileage out of Spinola than you did. As long as you leave behind the requisite number of CFs to maintain the siege, your leader and part of his forces are free to move off and take care of other business.

Thus, in this case, you could have moved off with Spinola and one Vet, converted Landau (MP 1-2), and then returned to the siege lines outside of Mannheim (MP 3) before continuing to Oppenheim (MP 4-5) and converting that, and then returned to Mannheim for the siege assault (MP 6). As long as you have a leader in the besieged place at the end of movement (Rule 13.21, 2nd bullet), you can proceed with your siege assault.

Note, BTW, per Rule 13.21 4th bullet, that you don't have to have a leader present however to do a siege roll during the Continued Siege Segment of the end phase.

So, here, why don't you take a mulligan, we'll assume that Spinola marched off and converted Landau and Oppenheim, and thus you have conquered the Lower Palatinate and get +3 VPs, taking the tally back up to 21, I believe.

Note again, however, that flipping control of the Lower Palatinate as a whole does not give you control of Heidelburg pursuant to Rule 3.12, 1st bullet. You would still have to besiege that if you wanted to take it.

19 3/31/2020 2:21:00 PM 1620-1621 Catholic Message Mannheim falls... the Lower Palatinate goes neutral.
18 3/31/2020 2:15:00 PM 1620-1621 Catholic Die roll request Request: 10-sided die x 1

Message from Catholic:
Siege of Mannheim, +1 drm (spinola)
17 3/31/2020 2:15:00 PM 1620-1621 Catholic Play Strategy card as Operations #5: 3 / Spain Declares War With England
-2 to all English AP totals.

Message from Catholic:

Activate Spinola, to force the issue at Mannheim
16 3/31/2020 12:29:00 AM 1620-1621 Protestant Message Oh, and I had forgot to flip the Area marker for Schleswig-Holstein and the two city markers to Protestant control on my last impulse, so I will take care of that now, too.
15 3/31/2020 12:27:00 AM 1620-1621 Protestant Play Strategy card as Operations #5: 2 / Gregory XV Becomes Pope
Playable only if Paul V is Pope. Death of Paul V. No Papal Aid to Catholic player this turn. Papal Aid resumes next turn, until Urban VIII Becomes Pope event (P-15).

Message from Protestant:
I'll use this to activate Christian IV and his army, who will move as follows:

MP 1: Kiel.

MP 2-3: Lubeck; convert it. -1 VP (now 18).

MP 4: Advance to Hamburg; establish a siege, and place a Siege marker.

14 3/29/2020 10:37:00 PM 1620-1621 Catholic Play Strategy card as Operations #6: 2 / Edict of Restitution
Frederick of Palatine Deposed as Elector event must have been played previously. +5 VPs

Message from Catholic:
Activate Spinola, who marches: Liege (place Pillage-1)->Luxembourg->Trier->Landau, flip control->Mannheim. Place siege marker...
13 3/29/2020 12:47:00 AM 1620-1621 Protestant Play Strategy card as Event #7: 3 / Denmark Enters War
Deploy Christian and 4 Danish Mercenaries in Denmark.

Message from Protestant:
My apologies for the delay. I thought this would be a fairly quiet week at work, but it didn't work out that way. Lots of emergency filings.

I'll play this for the Event. C-IV and his 4 Mercs get added to the Danish flag space, but Schleswig-Holstein converts to Protestant: -2 from the VP total, so from 21 down to 19.

Message from Catholic:

-Tilly for militia

9 3/21/2020 11:39:00 PM 1620-1621 Protestant Message Pretty good. Mansfeld and Thurn will each add a f/s Merc at their respective locations. I will send you a move file, unless you would prefer for each of us to just maintain his own maps (easier on an ongoing basis, but always seems to result in confusion down the road).

8 3/21/2020 11:34:00 PM 1620-1621 Protestant Die roll request Request: 10-sided die x 3

6 3/20/2020 11:30:00 PM 1620-1621 Protestant Message Next, Optional Rules. These are listed on pp. 36-37 of the 2009 version of the Living Rules.

I suggest the following:

19.1: Victory Determination

19.2a: Stronger Imperial Set-up (i.e., 4th Austrian Veteran unit at Wien)

19.2b: New French Leader Guebriant (a minor bit of chrome, but why not)

19.3: LoC for Pay/Loot status purposes is established at the end of each player's 6th round

19.6: Wallenstein's ambition

19.9: Old Corps French Infantry Regiments Combat Card: another minor bit of chrome

19.11: Wallenstein's enemies

The one I always wrestle with is 19.7, Tilly as Dynamic Leader. This is more historically accurate and further benefits the Catholics in the early going (which is already tough sledding for the Protestant player after the first turn, usually). The downside for the Catholics is that as long as this rule remains in effect, Imperial (Austrian) units/leaders are restricted to Austria, Hungary, Bavaria, the Tyrol, the two Palatinates, and the Kingdom of Bohemia.

Let me know what you think.

5 3/20/2020 11:13:00 PM 1620-1621 Protestant Message And, you know, although we get 7 cards, we only have 6 Card Rounds. You may wind up using the extra one as a Battle Card, or you may get to the end of the turn with an extra card, which can either be held or discarded.
4 3/20/2020 11:12:00 PM 1620-1621 Protestant Message Ok! We're off.

As an initial matter, something curious happened with our respective card draws, since I have 7 cards (which is correct, Rule 6(C)) but you apparently have 8. If that's right, then you should discard one. That may require you just to play it, and we'll treat it as cancelled. Just play it for operations.

3 3/20/2020 9:40:00 PM 1620-1621 Catholic Draw Strategy cards
2 3/19/2020 11:53:00 PM 1620-1621 Protestant Draw Strategy cards
1 3/19/2020 11:51:00 PM 1620-1621 Protestant Change Catholic player Catholic player changed from Jefferson Gray to Christopher Leary
