251 6/28/2020 2:00:00 AM 213-212 BC Rome Play Strategy card as Operations #23: 3 / Numidian Ally
(Rome) Place up to three Roman PCs in Eastern Numidia in spaces which do not contain enemy CUs. If the space contains a Carthaginian PC, the PC is simply flipped.

Message from Rome:
Rome Action 6
Add 1CU at Rome giving 8CUs there.
250 6/28/2020 1:59:00 AM 213-212 BC Rome Message Thanks for the links on Cosa, very interesting.
Regarding the probes and DEs I had in the First battle of Cosa, I had several Probes but think I only had 1 DE but not sure.

249 6/27/2020 1:51:00 AM 213-212 BC Carthage Message By the way -- do you recall how many Probes and DE's you had in your hand during the 1st Battle of Cosa, at the time I broke off the action?

And if you're interested in the site of our two conflicts, there's a remarkably detained Wikipedia article about its history and archaeology, and another site about the excavations there that has some stunning photography:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cosa
http://www.cosaexcavations.org/

Presumably, our combats would have been fought in that coastal plain that you see stretching south from the ruins of the Capitolinum in the third photo of the slideshow of that second link.

248 6/27/2020 1:45:00 AM 213-212 BC Carthage Play Strategy card as Event #16: 2 / Gallic Recruits
(Carthage) Place two Carthaginian CU's with any General located in Gallia Transalpinia or Cisalpinia

Message from Carthage:
I'll place 2 CUs with H. Gisgo at Boii.
247 6/26/2020 3:36:00 AM 213-212 BC Rome Play Strategy card as Operations #62: 2 / Force March (1 or 2 rating)
(Both) Move a General whose Strategy Rating is 1 or 2 up to six spaces.

Message from Rome:
Rome action 5
Varro, Nero and Longus and 8CUs leave Falerii,
Head to Mutina.
Longus is dropped off there with 1CU.
Then Varro, Nero and 7CUs head to Rome.
246 6/26/2020 3:26:00 AM 213-212 BC Rome Message And Longus, the ProConsul is also at Falerii.
Remove Salmantica, Bilbilis, Tolosa
245 6/26/2020 3:22:00 AM 213-212 BC Rome Message Both armies lose 2CUs to battle attrition.
Varro then loses 3 more CUs for retreat.
Then Varro and the troops need to go to Faesulae and lose 2CUs there.
Then stop at Falerii.
So Hannibal now has 8CUs at Cosa.
Varro, Nero and 8 CUs are at Falerii
A total of 7CUs were lost so need to remove 3 PCs.

228 6/23/2020 3:33:00 AM 213-212 BC Rome Message Unfortunately Varro wants to be in charge of the battle.
So
Hannibal gets 10 + 4 + 1 = 15 cards
Varro gets 13 + 1 + 2 = 16 cards
No defender cards.
I'll deal cards and Hannibal gets initiative.

Message from Rome:
Nero will be the commander. BUT I do have to roll to see if Varro wants to take over as the commander in the battle.
Die roll 1-3 Nero stays as commander, 4-6 Varro is commander.
226 6/22/2020 12:47:00 AM 213-212 BC Carthage Message And thanks for being understanding about my work issues.

225 6/22/2020 12:46:00 AM 213-212 BC Carthage Message For MP 2, Hannibal, Hasdrubal, and their army of 10 CUs in Tarquini will turn north up the coast and make another attack upon the Roman position outside of Cosa.

There's little mystery as to whom you will designate as your commander, I think, but that decision should be formally made by you.

I think you can then make the Change-of-Command roll.

I will not play a battle-related strategy card; you may announce any cards of your own; and then you can calculate how many BCs each side gets in light of that and deal the cards.

224 6/21/2020 4:45:00 AM 213-212 BC Rome Message No interception this time.
Hannibal can continue.
Don't rush our game, just do it when you can, no pressure. It's no fun if you feel you need to do it.
223 6/21/2020 12:04:00 AM 213-212 BC Carthage Play Strategy card as Operations #7: 1 / Hostile Tribes
(Both) Play whenever an opposing army occupies (or enters) space in Gallia Transalpinia or Liguria. The Army immediately undergoes Attrition on the 5-6 column.

Message from Carthage:
A couple of work projects that need to be done by the end of next week have been distracting me, but I'll try to keep things moving forward. This certainly is an interesting strategic situation we have here!

Hannibal and Hasdrubal will leave 1 CU behind in Faesulae and will then match initially to Tarquini again. Will you attempt an interception?
222 6/17/2020 2:09:00 AM 213-212 BC Rome Play Strategy card as Operations #54: 2 / Treachery Within City
(Both) If you use this card as an OC to conduct a siege, you may roll twice on the Siege Table and use both results.

Message from Rome:
Rome Action 4
Hannibal actually has lots of Good Stars, just remember the battle where he killed 20 Roman CUs ! ! !
Add PCs at Bilbilis and Salmantica.
221 6/16/2020 11:13:00 PM 213-212 BC Carthage Message Make that, "I had read Rule 15.1 very carefully".
220 6/16/2020 11:12:00 PM 213-212 BC Carthage Message I see now that you're right about the Retreat path. I had read Rule 15.3 very carefully, and was somewhat surprised to see that it didn't include a requirement that the attacker must initially retreat to the space from which he entered the battle space. Now, however, I see that it's under (b) in Rule 15.2. That whole battle played out under an unlucky star for the Carthaginians.

Also, you're right about Tolosa -- I'm playing the Romans in another game. So let's remove a PC from Salmantica instead.

219 6/15/2020 2:29:00 AM 213-212 BC Rome Message I have Tolosa as Roman PC, log #178, if I'm correct, you need to remove a different PC. Let me know.
218 6/15/2020 2:26:00 AM 213-212 BC Rome Message Hannibal actually loses 1CU for having to retreat through Tarquini so there are 11 CUs at Faesulae, not 12.
217 6/14/2020 5:20:00 PM 213-212 BC Carthage Message Because of the -2 DRM, 2 CUs are lost in the retreat; unfortunately, one has to be my remaining CU-e. Hannibal and his army (now 8 CUs) will return to Faesulae to rejoin Hasdrubal and his 4 CUs.

I will remove a PC at Tolosa.

Let's battle ! ! !
205 6/11/2020 10:34:00 PM 213-212 BC Carthage Message You're right! My apologies.

I've discarded two cards. Is that satisfactory? Or would you prefer instead just to start over from scratch?

199 6/11/2020 1:04:00 PM 213-212 BC Carthage Battle Hands dealt Battle 3

Carthage: 17 cards
Rome: 17 cards
198 6/11/2020 1:03:00 PM 213-212 BC Carthage Message Actually, I can go ahead and draw both hands.

197 6/11/2020 1:02:00 PM 213-212 BC Carthage Message I will not do an elephant charge.

So that brings us to the drawing of our Battle cards. I make the numbers as:

Carthage: 10 + 4 + 1 = 15 (of which I will lose one)
Rome = 13 + 2 + 2 = 17 (and you will gain one).

I will go ahead and draw my hand.

196 6/11/2020 2:37:00 AM 213-212 BC Rome Play Strategy card as Event #59: 1 / Ally Deserts

Message from Rome:

195 6/11/2020 12:14:00 AM 213-212 BC Carthage Message No pre-battle cards for me.

194 6/10/2020 1:56:00 AM 213-212 BC Rome Message Here's the procedure:

Defender declares any battle strategy cards.
Attacker declares if he is doing Elephant attack
Defender declares elephant fright
Deal battle cards.

193 6/10/2020 1:51:00 AM 213-212 BC Rome Message Nero stays as commander.
I suggest we follow the exact battle procedure in this battle as it's very important, it'll require a few extra email exchanges but is worth it.

190 6/9/2020 11:24:00 PM 213-212 BC Carthage Message MP 2: Hannibal continues up the coast with his entire force (9 CUs, 1 CU-e) to attack the Roman force (13 CUs) at Cosa. Avoid Battle is not possible.

The next step is for you to designate your commander.

187 6/9/2020 2:17:00 AM 213-212 BC Rome Message We can't let Hannibal run wild in Italy so
Varro and 10CUs will attempt interception. Note that Varro intercepts on 1 - 4.
Note that Nero comes along. I think that if we battle then I get to roll to see which leader is in command at the battle, but I'll have to check.

Hasdrubal continues with 5 CUs to Pisae, where he drops off 1 CU, then continues on to Faesulae with the remaining 4. The brothers greet each other with fraternal affection. The Carthaginian army at Faesulae now totals 13 CUs & 1 CU-e.

Yes it would have been nice to actually put on the Campaign cards (Max of 1 sail).
Add PCs at Tolosa and Nemausus.
177 5/31/2020 11:00:00 PM 213-212 BC Carthage Message Oh, that's right -- we had that come up once before. It does seems like it would have been a good thing for the rules to have mentioned in Rule 10.11, "Campaign Card Limitations," as well as in a parenthetical in Rule 11.4.

In that case, I'll leave Mago with his 5 CUs with Hanno in Carthage. I will not move a third leader other than Hasdrubal and H. Gisgo.

176 5/31/2020 3:04:00 AM 213-212 BC Rome Message With a Campaign card, only one army can make a sea move, not two.
175 5/29/2020 12:27:00 PM 213-212 BC Carthage Play Strategy card as Event #33: 3 / Major Campaign
(Both) MOVE ANY THREE GENERALS. Each General can move up to four spaces with 10 combat units.

Message from Carthage:
I'll play this card for the Event, and activate the following Generals:

A. Hasdrubal with 6 CUs from New Carthage to Nice, and then to Liguria (West).

B. Mago will move with 5 CUs from Carthage to Aleria.

C. H. Gisgo will move (alone, leaving the 1 CU behind in Pisae) across the Alps to Boii.

174 5/29/2020 12:34:00 AM 213-212 BC Carthage Message I'll make the first move this turn, but will do so tomorrow after sleeping on it tonight.

173 5/28/2020 11:49:00 PM 213-212 BC Carthage Message And the new army totals for Carthage are:

Hasdrubal - 8 CUs
Hanno/Mago - 9 CUs
Hannibal - 9 CUs, 1 Cu-e
H. Gisgo - still with 1 CU

172 5/28/2020 11:27:00 PM 213-212 BC Carthage Message Oops! I'm getting ahead of myself. I should have placed my reinforcements first. (I'm too preoccupied with trying to keep the cat out of my way. Usually it works if I crumple up a piece of paper and throw it out into the hall for him to chase, but he didn't buy that this time.)

As it happens, there isn't a lot of scope for choice here in any case.

1 - with Hanno at Carthage
2 - with Hasdrubal in New Carthage
1 - with Hannibal at Faesulae

171 5/28/2020 11:19:00 PM 213-212 BC Carthage Draw Strategy cards 8 cards drawn.

170 5/28/2020 11:19:00 PM 213-212 BC Carthage Message Oh, that's right -- for Battle Attrition we look at the number of rounds of combat, not the strength of the force.

And Mago left the 1 CU behind in Aleria.

169 5/27/2020 3:36:00 AM 213-212 BC Rome Message Rome will decline to play a Campaign card to start.
Up to Carthage to get reinforcements, cards and decide who goes first.
Remember that Truce is in effect.

159 5/27/2020 3:16:00 AM 215-214 BC Rome Message Actually for battle attrition, we had 6 rounds and I rolled a '3' so look on the '5/6' column and die roll of 3 and it should say 1CU lost.
So Hannibal has 8CU +1e.
158 5/25/2020 11:52:00 PM 215-214 BC Carthage Message P.S. Since I had 9 CUs and 1 CU-e at the start of the Battle of Faesulae, and you rolled a 3 for Attrition, we each would have lost 2 CUs. So I have reduced my force at Faesulae to 8 CUs & 1 CU-e.

(Carthage) Place one Elephant unit (at strength level 2) in Carthage. If an Elephant unit is not available, place two regular CUs in Carthage

155 5/25/2020 1:53:00 AM 215-214 BC Rome Message Back to the game, I was not expecting to lose my total army of 20CUs. With so many cards and having more than Hannibal, I thought that Hannibal may win the battle, and I may lose 5-7 CUs with attrition and retreat that that Hannibal would lose 2-3. You must of had many DEs and Reserves to push the DE.
154 5/25/2020 1:51:00 AM 215-214 BC Rome Message Jeff, thanks for the historical information, I really enjoy learning it. I came from a background of playing games and I'm learning history through playing wargames. After playing Hannibal, I've read one book about the life of Hannibal (many years ago, probably should read again).
153 5/24/2020 6:50:00 PM 215-214 BC Carthage Play Strategy card as Operations #18: 2 / Traitor in Tarentum
(Both) If you use this card as an OC to siege Tarentum, it comes under your control without a Siege die roll. Enemy CUs inside are eliminated.

Message from Carthage:
Place PCs in Nice and Druentia.
152 5/24/2020 6:50:00 PM 215-214 BC Carthage Message I note, though, that Fortune gave you a pretty good compensation in having that Truce card in your hand at that particular moment!
