As for thinking, here's mine. Suppose you didn't have any fresh units in the area and no one could reinforce it if the assault sticks. Using the spent guy as lead means he'd have to take the first hit, if any, by going D1 or retreating. The end result being you wouldn't have any fresh units in the area on the next day. Using the D1 guy keeps open the possibility of refitting the spent guy to fresh overnight.
