184 5/7/2020 8:15:00 PM Jan-Apr 1933 Allies Message I just reviewed the VLOG and the ACTS journal. I agree with your hit allocation and confirm the final outcome.

In this game you were plagued by bad luck. Because most of it occurred early, it strongly influenced the rest of your game, cutting short what looked to be a basically strong plan.

By end of Turn 2, I was pretty sure I could, given average die rolls, turn my slight edge into a Ratio victory, but was concerned about you avoiding battle. So I had every intention of invading Japan. I was bit dismayed when you started protecting the home islands so early. So I started a feint / supporting attack on the P.I., but other than naval response you did not seem to go for it much.

The US has won both games, and IMO they are the easier side to play, but not as easy as it looked as when I was the Japanese.

In the long run, I doubt that this game has much replay value, but we haven't played it well yet. It's definitely a Mahan game, and I am (re)learning a lot from it. I'm concurrently reading a biography of Admiral Ray Spruance, so the period is covered well in that respect. I'm really intrigued by the emerging role of aircraft.

All of that to say that I'd like to play again, either side, but only if you do. I get that your interest may not go along these paths.
183 5/7/2020 7:28:00 PM Jan-Apr 1933 Japanese Message Full hits on each side will hurt me more than you.
Thanks to the force you arrange, I think I can flip the two bbs in the hex of combat for 22 points, and nothing else.
Your 33 pts will flip the CVL, BC, and DD for 21, leaving 12 factors. You could take a CV, but I suspect you want the BB Fuso. I haven't checked the force ratio counter, but I think this will be a win for the US at this point. I will leave it to you to verify your flippings, and verify a win on your part. My final card will not make much of a difference.

Message from Japanese:
Damned if I do, and damned if I don't. Odds are bad that if I don't intercept, you'll knock enough steps off to secure an immediate win. So- Playing for the win. I will engage.
Almost all of Force A and Force B from the homeisland will join the fray, minus DD (Astuki). This is the entirety of the Japanese fleet. I just manage to have 33 factors to fight against you, barely matching your fleet.
First roll is US, second is Japan. I will need the 10% chance of a big roll on my side and little on your side to continue the game, but if I do, I do have a fighting chance to stick around maybe until the end.
181 5/7/2020 2:50:00 PM Jan-Apr 1933 Allies Message Intel condition changed to Intercept. The base card is an OC-3, so naval units from Japan can come down if they want the breeze let thru their ships!

i.e. I'm willing to wait until you have time to make an informed decision. I need to go mow the lawn anyway.

179 5/7/2020 2:27:00 PM Jan-Apr 1933 Allies Play Strategy card as Event #10: 3 / War Plan 1929
Activation: Any HQ. Logistic Value: 9. Bonus: Fleet Train can immediately create a fleet base in the port hex it occupies when activated.

OC: 3 EC: 5

Message from Allies:
Your attack was much more provident for you than you might have realized. Take a look at this card. Had the Fleet Train remained, I would have established an instant base in Saipan! You've RUINED my plans for Global Conquest sir!

Play the event anyway for 1+9 activations:

a) BB NV/OK from Leyte to Palau, declares Battle Hex
b) BB CA/CO from Leyte to Palau
c) (CA Pensacola) from Leyte to Palau
d) CV Lexinton from Leyte to 3216, supports attack
e) (20th Pursuit Grp) from Saipan to Ulithi, supports attack

g) CV Saratoga from Midway to 3616, supports attack
h) BB PA/AZ from Midway to 3616, escorting Saratoga
i) BB MD/WA from Midway to 3616, escorting Saratoga
j) CA Chicago from Midway to 3616, escorting Saratoga
178 5/7/2020 1:43:00 PM Jan-Apr 1933 Allies Message So it is.

That's a goofy card. Put that +2 benny on the CVs and then give them no raiding range?
177 5/7/2020 1:42:00 PM Jan-Apr 1933 Allies Message Truly surprised, the US AAF takes a pounding...

First 12 hits flip the Fleet Train, and the two unflipped air units.
4 more hits finsh off the Fleet Train. That's 16 of the 18 hits.

Message from Allies:
The Intel Condition remains surprise. Everyone at Leyte was ready to finsh you off, but everyone on Saipan is sitting around a radio wsiting to get the news from Leyte...

First die is the Japanese attack with 18 factors and very important +3 DRM

Second die is for what ever US might remain, probably looking for a critical hit.
175 5/7/2020 8:15:00 AM Jan-Apr 1933 Japanese Message If you would indulge me, I'd like to flip target hex to Saipan, but otherwise same move. This is still going to be bad for me, but at least here maybe I can ding something worthwhile, and do something bad against you.

174 5/7/2020 8:12:00 AM Jan-Apr 1933 Japanese Message actually, in re-calcing my attack factors, this attack went from pretty much no sense, to no sense at all. I thought I had enough to flip both BBs, but I don't even have that.
173 5/7/2020 8:09:00 AM Jan-Apr 1933 Japanese Play Strategy card as Event #8: 1 / Offensive
Activation: Any HQ. Logistic Value: 4. Intelligence: Surprise Attack. Bonus: Horizontal Bombing. Carrier and air units +2 attack strength.

OC: 1 EC: 0

Message from Japanese:
After the last ferocious attack, the surface ship commander is side-lined. Next in seniority is the carrier commander. "We will show the true strength of Japan's airpower!" and launches a strike, despite the poor state of the actual strike force.
Event with 5 activations. Strike force Palau, all dinged, will go for Leyte. Charge!
Note, condition is surprise unless you have a card.
If you do resolve, be sure to triple my CV strengths due to the bonus (sounds better to say tripling...)
172 5/6/2020 11:07:00 PM Jan-Apr 1933 Allies Message US PBM

165 5/6/2020 10:26:00 PM Jan-Apr 1933 Japanese Message PBM will send all my dinged guys back to Palau.

164 5/6/2020 10:16:00 PM Jan-Apr 1933 Allies Message Admiral Connors orders the "Don't Tread on Me" Jacks flown. The snake, once wounded, strikes back!

161 5/6/2020 8:46:00 PM Jan-Apr 1933 Japanese Play Strategy card as Event #11: 2 / Naval Offensive

OC: 2 EC: 4

Message from Japanese:
and I lied. Let's hit Leyte. Maybe I just want this beating to end.
Event for 5 activations, battle at Leyte.
Both CVs, BB Ise, CA Nachi, and DD Mutsuki. Defense strength I don't think will be as big of a deal.
160 5/5/2020 10:47:00 PM Jan-Apr 1933 Allies Play Strategy card as Operations #14: 2 / Mothball Ships Mobilization
4 Naval Replacements: The US player receives 4 naval replacement steps which must be used immediately for CA, CL or DD naval units or saved for future use. Replacements are placed on the US East or US West Coast.

OC: 2 EC: 0

Message from Allies:
I have a suspicion that I will end up wishing I'd saved this replacements, but i still don't understand this card. Does it resurrect dead CA, CL, DD units? Or do they teleport back to the Coast, or do I have to move them to the coast to play the card?

If i were in more extremis, we'd be hammering out these questions. But I have a couple of admin things i want to do, so instead:

Play for OPS for 1+2 activations:
a) Fleet Train from Midway to Jaluit in the Marshalls
b) 17th Pursuit Group from Midway Island to Turn 5 on the TRT
c) 19th Bomb Group from Marcus Island to Turn 5 on the TRT
159 5/5/2020 9:11:00 PM Jan-Apr 1933 Japanese Play Strategy card as Event #6: 2 / Naval Offensive

OC: 2 EC: 4

Message from Japanese:
Seriously wrote this as yet another attack at leyte. Then stopped. Instead, playing as event for 5 activations for some ground/SNM movement.
Ground unit at Truk, Formosan Army, Korean Army in Seoul and both Armies in China activate.
Truk SNM to Tokyo. Enough movement to skirt any air including AIRSHIPS.
Formosa moves to Tainan. Both china armies move to Port Arthur.
Korea army moves to Nagoya via SNM.

The Japanese are thrown into a degree of confusion, but are still able to get 16 hits. It takes 12 hits to flip the first BB (BB NV/OK) and the remaining 4 are lost.

US PBM.
(AIRSHIPS!) go to Guam
All others must remain in Leyte as the range is too great to go anywhere else.

24 hits more to sink both BBs.
At this point we've spent 58 hits. I'll note I forgot to add in the Yokosuka air (in hex) so really I had 65 hits. Regardless, remaining 7 is not enough to do anything. It took everything I had, but that ought to buy back some force ratio victory condition for a turn.

Well, unfortunately the AIRSHIPS are fragile, so they'll probably be lost soon. But that'll use up another card at least.

I got all three of these big offensive cards this hand, I could have used one for next turn, I think.

b) CA Pensacola (Force 5 Scouting) from Midway to Saipan

d) BB CA/CO (Force 5) from Midway to Saipan

h) BB NY (Force 1) from Oahu to Midway
i) BB WV (Force 1) from Oahu to Midway

Better to be lucky than good!

I'm not going to send a VASSAL file

US sends help to the embattled Leyte Garrison, just to lift morale and let them know the fleet is on the way!

AIRSHIPS!

Airships move from Wake via Guam to Leyte.

There is an A/N battle and that covers the ground forces.

Having left their airplane carrier behind, the Jpn Task Force cannot harm the Airships, but are preoccupied by the minor threat. The Airships drop their torpedo laden trapezee launched aircraft and attempt a night attack on some destroyers as well as vector in some local submarines and drop mines in front of the Japanese.

This die all of that activity, looking for a Critical Hit.

A zero result modifies to a 2, yielding 50% effectiveness for 3 hits when you need 4. The Philippine Army proves that the Philippine people are ready for sovereignty, which we will give them just as soon as we defeat Japan! (Maybe that's what you should have offered them?!)

Back to you for PBM.

Message from Allies:
The A/N Battle at Leyte/Samar is automatic and Leyte Bde gets flipped.

The ground combat is 6 factors with a net +2 DRM (-2, +2, +2), so is not quite automatic... That's this roll.

Even doubled and against 1/2 defensive factors, the flipped Leyte Bde cannot hurt any of the landing force, so no die for that...

1 Saved Naval (n.2) to bring BB WV to Full.
86 4/27/2020 1:57:00 PM May-Aug 1932 Allies Message Last game we played the naval replacement cards as anything repaired "immediately" meant just that. You repaired ships in Manila and I repaired ships in Saipan. (Tho I didn't get the Jpn naval replacement card often, so usually had to shuttle fleet units between Nagoya and Saipan.)

So, I'm not sure that repair in Home Islands, Oahu or Strategic display applies to points played immediately from the cards, but let's go ahead and play it that way. It's a pain for you now, but I think it'll end up being a bigger pain for the US in the late war.
