638 9/6/2020 2:04:00 PM Spring 1865 Confederate Message This was one of the closer games that I can remember. It is rare that I lose Tennessee as the Confederates. Losing Lee early in the game really hurt and the cards and die rolls were not on my side for the most part. I did get some good reinforcement cards for most of the game but it was rare to get a campaign card. Are you sure you don't want to play to the end since we are so close? Something might come up.
637 9/5/2020 5:02:00 PM Spring 1865 Confederate Message Thanks for doing all that work and rolling the battle and the general casualties. Actually, that was a large battle, we each had 10 SPs so the outcome was 5*/6 and the AoP drops 6 down to 4 SPs and the AoNVa down to 5 SPs. Strategic Will for the Union drops 5 from 52- to 47- and Confederate increases by 3 + 2 more for the change to positive and goes from 29- to 34+. Losing Hood was tough but not as bad as losing Sheridan on the last turn. That will make the AoP very vulnerable. I would love to play out the last few cards to see how much of Virginia that I could get back and see if I could even take Washington or destroy the AoP after that debacle. Of course, if I had lost Wheeler and you had lost Banks instead of Sheridan I would be in bad shape too. You had a chance on a large battle to take Richmond if I had rolled a 1 and you had rolled anything but a 1 or 2 but with 7 adds on a medium battle the least I could have gotten was a 3 result and you would have had no chance. So. it was probably in your best interest to make it a large battle. It has been an interesting game and I think your game play has improved greatly (or mine has really slipped). Of course the cards make it a different game every time.
636 9/5/2020 3:57:00 PM Spring 1865 Union Message Hood is killed in action.

Thatís the end of the game, Dan, you win. I canít win a battle with your resource position. I can take Norfolk with the cards I have but getting the other 2 points Iíd need would require a large battle win at Chattanooga. But, I cannot win a battle so there is not need to go further.

I was really hoping you had the Emancipation card but even that would not alter the outcome. Being a beginner I made too many early mistakes.

Congrats Dan.

ANV drops to 7 and AoP drops to 7.

We both rolled a 10 or more so we both will roll for leader loses.

I heard nothing from Kurt and I doubt I will so I guess weíre calling order of listing in the game journal the official record. So, you get the 6 3 result in your favor and you have Lynchburg.

I did find I could display what is called the ďraw message dataĒ on my email provider Fastmail. In that it showed the 3 3 result coming in 1 second before the 6 3 result. Iím not asking you to accept that since itís third party. I just was pointing out that Kurts site is lacking on this point. I will send him a suggestion to clean it up. As I recall you use gmail and I looked at my gmail account and saw it only goes to the minute, no seconds, and the controls are not sophisticated enough to allow changing that setting so weíre stuck with ACTS order of listing.

So on to the game.

I will activate the AoP (no surprise Iím sure.). I spend 1mp to convert Hanover to Union control and then attack Richmond. Iím sure youíll want to retreat out? :)

AoP has 6 adds to ANV 6 adds unless you use those elite guys, your call.
Any cards?
627 9/4/2020 1:46:00 PM Spring 1865 Confederate Message I didn't see the 6 3 roll result until just now. Technically in the log the 6 3 result was first which means Van Dorn wins with a 2/1 result and ends in Lynchburg. In the past whenever this came up my opponents and I ruled that the first roll in the log is the official roll. What do you think?
626 9/4/2020 11:32:00 AM Spring 1865 Confederate Message The Union stops Van Dorns corp with a 1/1 result. Van Dorn's corp falls back to Wytheville with 3 SPs. Hooker is left at Lynchburg with 5 SPs. Looks like you got lucky but it could have been even worse for me.

Looks like I have only a 1 in 6 shot of winning this battle.

So, Hooker +1 def & +2 intercept = 3 adds

Van Dorn 1 add for Attack rating.
622 9/4/2020 10:20:00 AM Spring 1865 Union Message Well, Iíll be, a BIG OLE 1 it is!

So we will battle at Lynchburg. The adds are 1 for Van Dorn and 2 for Hooker with the interception. 4sp to 6sp and a medium battle.

Pending you having a card to use I will halt and get your response.

2. Cleveland, TN
3-6 up to Wytheville, VA
7. Lynchburg, Va (where Hooker could try and intercept)
8. Appomatttox Court House
9. Burkeville, VA where he stops with his 4 SPs.

614 9/2/2020 12:25:00 PM Spring 1865 Union Message I did a quick at the journal. Right now the SW is 37- South and 521 North. That what you show?
613 9/2/2020 11:53:00 AM Spring 1865 Union Message Dan, in the Battle of Hanover you said the AoP only lost 1sp. You looked at the wrong column or forgot you +6 adds. Your modified roll came to 2dr + 6adds = 8 which = 3sp loss to the AoP in the medium column.

The AoP would drop from 11 to 8sp. Let me know if Iím missing something because Iíd love to have that 10sp but I just donít see it.

Confederate AoNVa defeats the AoP at Hanover again with a 2*/3 result. AoP drops from 10 to 7 SPs and retreats back to the Wilderness. (The attacker must always retreat into the space from which it entered the battle.) AoNVa drops from 8 to 6 SPs and remains in Hanover. Because the defending AoNVa got a modified 10 there is a chance of a general casualty.
1st roll is for the Union who loses a general only if the roll is a 1.
2nd roll is for the Confederates who lose a general on a roll of 1-3.

585 8/31/2020 12:45:00 PM Fall 1864 Union Message Yeah, Vincennes then. I was really looking closely at the board and as you said, matters not.

Youíve lost me on the extra sp. I didnít mention one that I can see. Meade was sent to the turn track when relieved of his army command but no sp went with him.

Are you talking about the +1sp at Cairo? Ali I really meant was that 1sp was there and with the 6sp for reinforcements it then held 7sp. I didnít do it that way for Washington, I just stuck it on at the end and said there were 9sp. Usually I try to do all the locations the same way for clarity but did it rather quickly as the Cairo location points out.
584 8/31/2020 12:32:00 PM Fall 1864 Confederate Message Cairo is not in Indiana or Ohio so technically those reinforcements need to arrive in those states. It doesn't really matter since they could be Strategically moved from Vincennes, IN just as well but for the record. Where did your extra +1 reinforcement come from? I see you took the 1 SP reduction for Columbus, Ohio from the West and that was OK. But, You don't get a +1. You didn't lose a cavalry unit.
583 8/31/2020 12:11:00 PM Fall 1864 Union Message Turn 13 Reinforcements for the Union

Washington = 8 = 9sp
Cairo 6sp + 1sp = 7sp
St. Louis 3sp

Strat Move

Washington - send 3sp to Baltimore = 3sp. 6sp in Washington

Washington - send 6sp to the AoP = 13sp now, Washington = 0sp

Cairo 6sp tp the AoT = 14sp now, 1sp on Cairo
Total of 15sr used

Do your reinf and SR and then I will place the returning Meade.

This may be mainly an exercise but there is a slight change I could pull it off. DR are likely to make the difference as well as the card draw. At least on the last turn itís close making it interesting.

582 8/30/2020 7:48:00 PM Fall 1864 Confederate Message End of Fall 1864 phases:
No Capital changes

Union PC markers go down at:
Winchester, Strasburg, Staunton, Charlottesville, & Gordonsville, Va. Pittsburg Landing and Chattanooga, TN

State control: Tennessee falls the the Union. Confederate Strategic Will drops 10 and 3 more for the change to negative and goes from 50+ to 37- SW.
Union SW drops 5 for war weariness and goes from 57- to 52-.

Attirition:
Union
AoP drops 2 from 9 to 7
AoT drops 2 from 10 to 8
AoM drops 1 from 4 to 3
AoC drops 2 from 8 to 6

Confederate:
AoNVa, AoT & AoM all drop 1 each from 6 to 5 SPs.

Overall strength at the end of 1864: Union 44 SPs, Confederates 54 SPs. But the Union will get 17 reinforcements for next turn (one less for Columbus, Ohio) and the Confederates will be lucky to get more than 8.
581 8/30/2020 3:45:00 PM Fall 1864 Confederate Play Strategy card as Event #2: 2 / Copperheads

Message from Confederate:
12C7: Use this as an event and place Confederate PC markers in Cincinnati and the state capital of Columbus, Ohio. This should limit your strategic movement East to West and cost the Union 1 SP in reinforcements. By this time the war was getting very unpopular and Lincoln almost lost the election.

578 8/30/2020 11:59:00 AM Fall 1864 Confederate Play Strategy card as Operations #13: 2 / Missouri Guerrilla Raids

3. Richmond where he adds the 1 SP there making 6 in the AoNVa and now 5 generals.

I counted 6 failed interceptions in the game so far, 5 for the South (two of those by Jackson with failing 1-5 rolls) and 1 failed by the North. Johnston's interception was the 4th successful by the South. The other successful interceptions were:
Summer 1864 Jackson's AoM logs 514, 515 (and still lost the battle at Chattanooga despite the odds)
Summer 1862 Stuart cavalry logs 174, 175
Spring 1862 J. Johnston logs 101, 102
In each of these and in many of the failed attempts the +2 for interception was listed and used. Interception to me is the poor army's fort (which in my book is outmaneuvering or "getting there first" as Forrest put it). As you can see from all the 1 and 2 cards this turn, I couldn't afford another fort although there are 3 available.

We both managed to roll modified 10ís so we both lose a general on a dr of 1-3.

As usual, the first roll is for the North.
574 8/29/2020 7:33:00 PM Fall 1864 Union Message Okay, you lose the dr but win the battle with us both ending up on the 10+ line.
AoP loses 6sp & ends up with 9SP

ANV loses 5sp & ends up with 5sp

You gain 3 sw for the win +3sw + 47+sw = 50+ sw which may have saved you the game...who knows.

I lose 5sw -5 sw + 65sw+. -3sw direction change = 57sw-

Casualties to come.

Battle at Hanover. Union + 7 and South +6. 15sp to 10sp so a quite large battle.

North first unless thatís the low number and then thatís the Souths :)
572 8/29/2020 4:45:00 PM Fall 1864 Union Message Dan, congrats on the interception and I will gladly roll out the battle but before I do let me know where you get +6 adds. You have
Johnston = 2
Wheeler = 1
Ewell = 1
Total of 4

Fort or course does not count and you are not using the Elilte. I checked through the log quickly and I donít see where you get the other +2. Fill me in my good man.

Iím not likely to win this but it can be close at least. I remember you saying at the beginning how it could swing near the end. I thought this didnít reflect history very well but then looked at the board position and thought about it. The Union did the march to the see but as far as taking over states they had Tennessee and never quite got Va. They split the south with the Mississippi which I failed to do. Outside that it looks pretty similar I guess if I can get Richmond.

571 8/29/2020 3:32:00 PM Fall 1864 Confederate Message 1 SP is left behind in the Richmond fort but the rest of the army battles the damn Yankees at Hanover in a large battle. I will not use the elite Hood's brigade and have a +6 for this battle even though that increases the chances that I will lose the battle. I'll let you roll the battle.

564 8/27/2020 4:21:00 PM Fall 1864 Confederate Play Strategy card as Operations #3: 1 / Forward to Richmond
Union may activate any Union army within 4 spaces of Richmond, VA. The army must enter Richmond or move as close to Richmond as possible, but may convert spaces to maintain an LOC. All SPs associated with the army must be moved (no dropping off SPs), except 1 SP may be left if the Army began its movement from a fort (if last SP, move completed). If played by the Confederate, he draws a card from the Union hand which is discarded, and the Union player follows the instructions of this card as his next card play.

12U1 - 1 OPS

I will shift some generals.

Thomas will be placed in command of the AoC and remove Pope.
SW change: -4 for Pope PR & -2 for for Halleck being senior = -6 SW for Union. Then another -3 for direction change = -9.

Union goes from 74+ to 65- but not stopping here.

Pope will transfer to the AoM and relieve Meade as commander.
-5 for Meades PR but thatís all since Pope outranks the other generals in the AoM.

So, Union SW drops another -5 from a 65- to 60-

Meade comes back in on Turn 13.

I hope I got all that correct...I tried at least.
