401 1/12/2021 7:37:00 PM Spring 1863 Confederate Message I could add one game, two or four player.

The only four player I really know is Nappy Wars, and it's been forever. Here I Stand would be too hard to teach online if you haven't played it. I have the new version of Successors kickstarted, but it's not here yet.

Two player: gotta be something I know. Could play PoG so you can have your revenge. Could try Barbarossa to Berlin. Trying to stick with games on ACTS.
400 1/12/2021 7:34:00 PM Spring 1863 Confederate Message OK. New game coming your way.
399 1/11/2021 8:47:00 PM Spring 1863 Union Message Let's cash this one in as I am still learning the game and the depth of strategy.

I appreciate your teaching me to be a worthy opponent in this game ! I have tried a number of things to see what does and doesn't work from both sides.

FtP is a wonderful game and I am rally digging it !

When you lived here I simply fell in LOVE with POG ! We played "We the People" when it was in a different format than Washingtons War is currently. The combat was like 1776 with the cards, I prefer the game changed to the way it is now.

Lets switch sides and try again......

BTW: with our Sword of Rome game being over, Is there anything you wold want to play that is 2 player or 4 player for all of us to get back in ?
398 1/9/2021 5:34:00 PM Spring 1863 Confederate Message So, to some extend, you're Frazier and I'm Ali. You bull ahead, steady and unstoppable, while I dance around and sting where I can.
397 1/9/2021 5:24:00 PM Spring 1863 Confederate Message One last thing: don't forget, I don't want to fight. You win a war of attrition, almost automatically. The only fight I really want is a large combat I will likely win, because it gives me SW.

Also, if you study the combat tables, small and large battles favor the defender. Medium battles favor the attacker (historically accurate). So I am just as well off with corps as with armies--a full corps (6SP) guarantees me a medium battle if I do attack to stop you from moving somewhere I need to defend.

Lee needs an army to do his Superman routine...some of my other generals are better off in corps than in armies. They're more maneuverable, and easier to keep at full strength.
396 1/9/2021 5:19:00 PM Spring 1863 Confederate Message By the way, I forgot my free SP in Missouri. Put it with Van Dorn in Springfield [2].
395 1/9/2021 5:16:00 PM Spring 1863 Confederate Message Many typos there, sorry. Eastern Shore.
394 1/9/2021 5:14:00 PM Spring 1863 Confederate Message If you want to call this game and switch side to see how I play the Union, we can. Or you can try the Union again with that advice in hand.
393 1/9/2021 5:13:00 PM Spring 1863 Confederate Message You haven't taken the key geography in the game yet--upper Kentucky/Tennessee. Take Dover, and I can't cross the Tennessee River, I have to go around it. Take Columbus and Memphis and I have to worry about Ark and Texas being cut off. And you can march straight down the Mississippi River's Eastern short.

You've been very focused on the East, but Lee is tough to beat, as he should be. Strategically, the war was won in the West, by Grant, before he came East. Also, before Grant, I think you had two 3's commanding armies in the East. That makes it hard to move them, and takes up resources (cards and SPs) you aren't using to overwhelm my forces in the West.

Instead of hammer blows against Lee, which probably won't work before Grant, your SP should be distributed across three theaters--East, West (KY, TN, and south of them) and Trans-Mississippi--forcing me to spread my forces thin. One amphib move every turn or every other turn (not card play, turn) also forces me to leave forces to deal with them.

392 1/9/2021 5:04:00 PM Spring 1863 Confederate Message Good questions.

Blockade is random. It helps but isn't necessary.

Naval moves--you can move 3SP and a general on any 3 card--doesn't have to be a special naval card. The naval cards just give you extra juice.

One thing you aren't doing is using armies to full advantage. You tend to leave SP behind them instead of convert spaces a you go. Better to keep a powerful, threatening army together, move slowly and covert 3 spaces per activation, than scatter your forces where my corps can pick them off. That's what just happened in Missouri. If you'd just converted six spaces using two cards, I couldn't have stopped you and Missouri would be yours.
391 1/9/2021 4:37:00 PM Spring 1863 Union Message Before I do reinforcements.......

Game question........

What am I doing wrong as the Union as icannot make any headway anywhere.

I have brought the east with hammer blow after hammer blow and cannot get anywhere, my center and west have gone nowwhere.......

One naval move card and virtually ZERO blockade oportunities.....
390 1/9/2021 12:01:00 PM Spring 1863 Confederate Message Your reinforcements.

Confederate Player may move 2 SPs using Strategic Movement from the same space using rail connections only (5 space maximum) to the same space with a Confederate General who is then activated and must attempt to enter a space with at least one or more Union SPs or fort. OR play this card as an automatic 2 space interception. Intervening space must be friendly controlled and free of enemy SPs. The intervening space may be the one just exited by the moving enemy force. No Generals or SPs may be picked up or dropped off during the intercept.

Message from Confederate:

374 1/6/2021 9:22:00 PM Spring 1863 Union Play Strategy card as Event #6: 1 / Ambush

373 1/6/2021 4:20:00 PM Spring 1863 Confederate Play Strategy card as Operations #3: 1 / Forward to Richmond
Union may activate any Union army within 4 spaces of Richmond, VA. The army must enter Richmond or move as close to Richmond as possible, but may convert spaces to maintain an LOC. All SPs associated with the army must be moved (no dropping off SPs), except 1 SP may be left if the Army began its movement from a fort (if last SP, move completed). If played by the Confederate, he draws a card from the Union hand which is discarded, and the Union player follows the instructions of this card as his next card play.

Message from Confederate:
Division move, 1 SP from Atlanta to Columbus GA.
372 1/6/2021 4:17:00 PM Spring 1863 Confederate Message Taking the fort ends your movement in an amphib.

371 1/6/2021 4:15:00 PM Spring 1863 Confederate Message 1 loss each. But the amphib rules say you win a tie as long as one unit survives. So Pope+2 in the fort.

Message from Confederate:
OK, teaching hat on. The difference between amphib and a normal attack is that we calculate an amphibious modifier, which cannot exceed 3.

You get 0 (your modifier--could also have a card, but didn't).
I get 2 for having a fort. (Ironclads, torpedoes, etc. could also add). You subtract one from the other, so the modifier is 2-0= +2 for me.

Then you add the other factors. You get +4 for attacking an ungarrisoned fort. You get +1 for Pope. So you are +5, I am +2.

Union then CSA.
369 1/4/2021 10:39:00 PM Spring 1863 Union Play Strategy card as Event #93: 2 / Strategy Board
Union player may make a naval move with up to three SPs plus one general.

368 1/4/2021 10:01:00 PM Spring 1863 Confederate Message You have to conduct an amphib assault on Ft. Gadsden first.

Running the Guns only applies to passing a fort built on a river (the gray fort counters), not to the permanent coastal forts.
367 1/4/2021 9:23:00 PM Spring 1863 Union Message I have a rules question....

I wish to move out of DC with Pope +3 to Ft. Gadson and assault it, or can I run the guns to Columbus GE ?

Or do I have to stop at Ft Gadson first ? First time I have done this......

If it's your last card in a turn, and I am at 110 or higher, you must play it as an event.

If I'm below 110, you can play it for OPS.
341 12/29/2020 1:44:00 PM Spring 1863 Confederate Play Strategy card as Event #48: 3 / Brazil Recognizes the Confederacy

340 12/29/2020 1:41:00 PM Spring 1863 Confederate Message OK, that costs you 6 SW (now 79-) for relieving McDowell.

You have to decide what happens to him. He can transfer to another army and relieve that general, or he can be deomoted (sent to turn track for next turn), or you can remove him from the game.
339 12/28/2020 11:57:00 AM Spring 1863 Union Play Strategy card as Operations #73: 1 / Ball's Bluff

Then your lost fort, which should be on the turn track, goes back to your pool.

Then I put F. Lee in the Army of Northern Virginia and form his Cav Brigade.
